A few quotes from San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who talked with the Seattle-area media today:

On Monday's game vs. Seattle:
"It's a big game, huge game. With all the struggles this year, (to be) two games back and playing the first place team – you win that game and you're just a game out halfway through the season."

If he holds a grudge vs. Seattle for knocking him out with a separated shoulder the last time they played:
"Not all. We play the game – it's a rough game – and you're going to have injuries. Things like that happen. In no way do I think it was malicious at all."

ON the 49ers' 32nd ranked offense:
"You can't dwell on the stats. We're right in the middle of the season right now and we've got to look forward. We've got to look ahead, and we're looking at what we can do to get better, how we can improve."

Translation:

"Im glad we play in a weak conference and believe it or not, we have a shot."

Lucky for both The Seahawks and the 49ers if neither were in a weak conference they both would be chanting there is always next year, of which both will be later rather then sooner. For all intent purposes the Seahawks are finished, they have proven they barely can win the weak teams (sometimes they can't even do that) and for sure they cannot beat the good teams. So for that matter truly they are lucky to be in a weak conference. They are not good enough to be in a better conference.

We're midway through the season though, and things change. Some teams that started strong will falter and others will pick up steam. I'm still hopeful.
