Mike Holmgren spoke for about 40 minutes, mostly about his decision to retire. The biggest news out of that is that he said that not only is he open to retiring or coming back, but that he would be open to an extension as well -- though he did say that there are other people (Paul Allen) involved in that decision as well. Deion Branch did tear his ACL. He will have surgery done by Dr. James Andrews in the next few days and will not be back probably for 9 months, but will not be completely right for a year. Shaun Alexander will have surgery to repair the cracked bone in his wrist, which Holmgren said the team hoped would heal by itself but never did. Walter Jones will have his shoulders worked on, which I assume means they will get scoped but Holmgren was not specific. Along with Nolan Cromwell going to Texas A&M, assistant quality control coach Gary Reynolds also will be going to the Aggies to be Mike Sherman's assistant. Jim Mora will leave tomorrow to interview with the Redskins. Frustrations of season: 1) Running game -- which will be a point of emphasis in the offseason. 2) Giving up fourth-quarter leads 3) Road record "No clean answer for that, I just don't." 4) Lost close games they should have won. "I put that on my shoulders," Holmgren said. POSITIVES: 1) The Nucleus is solid and the QB is in the prime of his career. 2) Young receiver corps. 3) Defense -- though it needs to become more consistent. 4) Ability to bounce back after 4-4 start. 5) Brandon Mebane -- though Holmgren did say he thinks they need another big body along the defensive front. Tubbs is progressing well but it is clear they don't know if he will ever be the same. Holmgren said he thinks Shaun Alexander can bounce back. He said he doesn't think he can be the 1,800-yard rusher, but that he can be a very productive back. "There is no reason to think that he can't come back," Holmgren said. Holmgren said he still has a desire to be a GM, but mostly that is his ego talking. He said he thinks that the second time around, he will not make the same mistakes he made the first time and that he can build a winning team. About doing that in Seattle, he said, "That ship has sailed. It's working fine here now." Holmgren said he thought that Chris Gray had a good year. He also said that if Gray comes back, it is highly likely he will have a reduced role. "We need to add some pieces to the offensive line," he said. Holmgren talked about the tight end position, saying he thought they were fine there over the course of the season with a bunch of "try hard guys." He also spoke about how that position is important to the offense. I got the feeling that he was not entirely comfortable with Will Heller as the starting TE next year. Holmgren got misty at the end, talking more about his decision to retire. He is going to go to Arizona with his wife this week, come back next Tuesday, "bang things around" with Tim Ruskell and make a decision. He did not put an exact time frame on it but said he would like to do it sooner rather than later. My guess is a decision will be made by the middle to end of next week. He said he and his wife have made lists about the positives and negatives of the job, and decide what they want to do. I asked him for clarification because it sounded to me like he was saying he wanted to keep coaching but his wife wanted him to retire. He said that was not accurate, but really never answered the question other than that. If I had to guess, based on the way he sounded, I would say a 70 percent chance he will be back, but he has said the decision has not even been made by him so any speculation is premature.

COMMENTS:
Coach doesn't see a reason why Alexander can't come back? 2006 he SHOULD have done well, but didn't (even when healthy). 2007 he SHOULD have done well, but didn't. I'd love to hear Holmgren address this issue the other way....give me one reason why Alexander WILL come back and have a great year? I see none.
Used to be a huge fan of Shaun's, but watching him run is painful. I think the line has to share some of the blame, but it's hard to be excited about a running back that doesn't break tackles, shys away from contact, looks lost when blocking or catching, and doesn't scare anyone on the defense.
I would have thought that the following have been frustrations the past 5 years -
2) Giving up fourth-quarter leads 3) Road record "No clean answer for that, I just don't." Holmgren is among the leaders in recent NFL history in blown 4th quarter leads. His offense is not agressive enough in holding a lead and his defense simply isn't good enough to play with better offenses without the incredible 12th man. That is still true right now. They blew three 10 point leads in the final 3 games of the season including playoffs. Anytime the defense faced a decent QB like Rothelsberger, Brees, Anderson, Palmer or Favre they were hurt badly. Chris Redman and Matt Moore took them apart to win games. The games against Troy Smith, Alex Smith, Gus Ferrote, AJ Feely and Todd Collins gave us false hope in this defense. Improving the Safety and DL should also be on the list for the year. Who's to say they are going to face only backup QBs next year?
Sign Hackett, tomorrow.
Has anyone ever thought about how Nate Burelson would do as the slot receiver? Bobby Engram is clearly a stud, but Burelson might really excel there, as he can break a play open whenever he touches the ball. Bobby can play anywhere, but I think Nate would do really well in the slot. Tubbs could come back and be fine. I recall that he tore an ACL, but those injuries can heal and this may well have given him time to properly heal from the microfracture surgery he had the year before. He's a big strong guy, if he comes back and can play with Mebane, we would be quite stout up the middle. Imagine Tubbs playing next to Kerney! Who are you going to double-team?
Alexander played well in 2006. He had huge games against good defenses like SD, GB and kept the Seahawks offense in the Bears playoff game when he returned from injury. They struggled in the Bears playoff game when Mack Strong was injured and Hasselbeck had trouble moving the team. The 2006 Seahawks ended up better than the 2007 Seahawks, in large part due to his effectiveness.
How is any RB supposed to run behind Chris Gray, Rob Sims, Marcus Pollard or Lenoard Weaver? Has anyone watched these guys block in the run game? Losing Mack Strong sealed the team's fate early this year. One of the great Seahawks ever.
MN, I watched on .com as well and got the impression that he was ready to return again next year. He said a couple of times to the reporters to not push him out of the door just yet.
I'm curious as to how you came to your conclusion?
I hope if he does come back he adds 2 years to his existing contract so we don't have to go through this again after '08. That way he would guarantee the franchise two years and then think things over before what would be the last year of his contract in '10.
Branch is going to have surgery and be out 9 - 12 months (let's just say next season). I know all teams have insurance on their players, does anyone know how that works? It would seem logical that Branch's salary would count against the salary cap, but how does the insurance play into the mix? Can it work as part of the money pool to get FA's or other players?
I didn't get the impression watching the press ocnference that Holmgren wants to retire. I thought his statement "How come I get the feeling you guys (press) are trying to rush me out the door?" was very telling. He said that with some intensity, and I thought slightly miff'd! If fans have any sort of vote, my vote is "PLEASE STAY!!!" For what it's worth.....
Pest... I guess I just noted the way he kept discussing what he would do if he didn't coach anymore as well as discussing how he needs to be fair to the other coaches, players, etc... I guess in general I just kinda got the impression that he is ready to move on with his life... I'm probably very wrong though... I hope I am!! And I am glad to hear more than one person say they think he is going to stay! Perhaps my psychology major is overanalyzing Mike! Haha...
just when i thought it was safe to read the blog again, the Alexander debate starts up again. I read the transcript of the press conference from another site and he said that the running game would be a major fix in the off season. i took that to mean repair the line and get another running back...
Holmgren also stated that he felt the line performed well. After listening to the conference it almost seemed as though Holmgren stopped short of saying that Alexander was the problem, and he started saying that SA is a good back. He said that he doesn't think that he will ever be an 1800 yd back again. Just my gut, I didn't see him upset in the elevator, but I did feel as though Holmgren basically was saying the RB position would be a focus in the offseason.
SA cap numbers: 6.775M in 08 if not cut 6.9M in 08 if cut 2.3M in 08 if post june 1 and 4.6M in 09 I would be surprised if he isn't designated a post june 1 cut so that we can lock up locklear and trufant.
Sign Hackett tomorrow is right; I don't have any particular faith in Obamanu or the other untested guys. But what to do about Branch? That's a real bad injury for his skill set.
I'd cut Shaun too; one down year could be an anomaly, but two in a row is not. Some players you lose and worry that they'll come back to haunt you with another team, can't really say that about Shaun as he currently stands. Weaver looked good this year, we should get him further involved in the offense (a la John L. Williams back in the day . . .), and find one other back to work with Mo at the halfback spot.
What's the big hurry to sign Hackett? So we can have two injured receivers next year? Branch's injury does have a couple of silver lining types of things to consider: Reps for the young guys. Obomanu, Taylor, Payne, Kent, Burleson, and of course Engram too. Granted, it'd be great if Branch participated as well, but he can't so we've got to look at the bright side. Maybe we even pick up a stud next year too! Perhaps a one year free agent signing of someone who can play flanker.
Injuries happen. At least we get all off-season to prepare for this one. Let's not cut Shaun until camp, that way we can see how the rest of the team shapes up. Not so fast! Most historically strong runners will have one big season before they truly are done- exhibit A- Fred Taylor, Exhibit B- Curtis Martin, Exhibit C- John Riggins, Gerald Riggs, the list goes on. We need to Shaun the chance to show us he has that in him. That is the best option.
I have NEVER been an Alexander fan (and bashed him for simply falling early in the year), but we all have to realize that our entire offense sucks at run blocking (except for our offensive tackles).
Left Guard --- bad run blocker (can't get any worse) Center --- bad run blocker this year (will improve) Right Guard --- the worst right guard in the NFL, 'nuff said Tight End --- nobody at TE is a very good run blocker Wide Receiver --- none of them are very good run blockers Fullback --- Weaver will be okay, but losing Mack's run blocking hurt This basically means what we saw in '08... There's no way in hell this team was set up to be able to run the ball very well... It should be of no suprise (and I wasn't) that we sucked so bad at running... I also watched it on the website... and think he will be back... I think Numbskull will give him the assurance that he is going to do something about getting a good guard in free agency... there are some good guards available...
Adding one big, run stuffing body to the rotation is all the defense really needs this off-season. Everything else looks good. Mebane did well this year and will only be better in '08.
Offensively, the team is close to being very good. Great QB. Great Tackles (assuming Lock is resigned) An up and coming center. Add a good guard (or two - let Sims be the back-up at each) and a good blocking TE (not tough to get) and the offense will be sitting good after spending a draft pick on a RB (it's a good RB class). I know we need offense, but I won't be broken hearted if we use our #1 pick on a defensive lineman (end or tackle). I keep remembering getting dominated at the point of attack by Green Bay this past weekend and it makes me sick.
Man I would be so pissed if we start next season with alexander and morris as the backs again. I really could see that happening too. Everyone is so sure that we will get a good RB in either the 1st or 2nd round of the draft, but what if we don't? I could see that happening too, with the front office just putting complete faith in the backs and working on the O line. Uggh I would be so mad. I'm fine with keeping shaun if we redo that contract, but please please get the back of the future!
In my opinion if Holmgren feels he is getting "rushed out the door", to use his words, maybe he needs to stop bring the issue up so much. He is the one who has brought the issue up consistently the last 2 seasons. He is the one who has spoken about how "the losses are getting harder to handle" and the "end is getting closer". To be honest I am starting to think this retirement talk by him is just that-talk. I have never really gotten a sense that he has really considered retiring. Which leads me to the next question why? If he was truly serious about retiring he would not bring up the issue of an extension but would take it one year at a time as he has said he was doing. I'm beginning to wonder if he likes the fact that this is being bantered about publically and that people are saying they want him back. I don't think he minds that at all. This is where I give Dungy credit. I believe he is serious when he says that he going to talk it over and pray on it and give them a decision. Holmgren is coming back and I 'm fine with that but I just wish he would stop bringing the retirement talk up because I just don't think he is serious about and it is getting real old.
Steve Hutchinson was born on November 11, 1977
Alan Faneca was born on December 7, 1976. Faneca is less than a year older than Hutchinson. I'm dreaming, but wouldn't this be nice... LT Walter Jones LG Alan Faneca C Chris Spencer RG Jake Scott (FA from Indianapolis) RT Sean Locklear Even Shaun could run behind that offensive line (please, no). Getting a good blocking TE is also a priority in my opinion.
In all the discussion about our running game and how inept the OL has been blocking for it (I whole-heartedly agree), I think it would be unfair not to mention that they did an above average job of pass-protecting for Matt.
Now let's find an O-lineman with a mean-surly disposition...like some Benedict Arnold ice fisherman I know.
Holmgren is great for the franchise. Why doesn't he pull a Bilicheach and get an overly aggresive Offensive coordinator to help him through the 4th qtr?
He consistantly goes to the prevent offense when we have a lead,,,, and that is the part of his play calling he carries on his shoulders that makes him say he has to regroup before making a decision on next year. I wish he would just go for the kill instead of playing it safe. Seeing Matt change so many plays doesn't help. Most of the time it's changed to be MORE conservative.
I'm 70 years old and I think Holmgren, if he does come back for another contract year, will--once again--only come back for one year. Why? Because, having been there myself, he sounds like a 60-year-old guy who's done a lot but is burned out enough that he feels divided. Which leaves his fine wife in the bind of mirroring and advising him to keep his options open by only taking it one year at a time in effect. The oly thing that would really test this is if they'd won the Superbowl, I suppose, when I'd almost bet he would have retired...at least for a while. Mike Holmgren is a thoroughbred football coach, who knows and loves his relationships with football at its best and the people--at their best--that he associates with. So, in my view, this is not an easy decision for him. And only a less intelligent man would find it easier to make a quick decision at this point.
no way that happens. jonathan stewart is coming home. this is one of the strongest drafts for RBs in years. there could be legit prospects into the fourth round.
it's pretty rare to get a rookie offensive lineman to perform well enough to start unless they are top 10 picks. That means free agency to fill in the line. eric johnson and lj smith are options at TE
I love a couple of BobbyK's points. First of all - Faneca is a guard where age is much less significant then it is for tackles. He doesn't have to deal with speed rushers off the edge and second he is not on an island (ie. he gets help from the centre and tackle most of the time). These are also the reasons most teams have been reluctant to franchise guards. I also think Scott is a great option.
"Right Guard --- the worst right guard in the NFL, 'nuff said".
Not quite. How does the "worst right guard in the NFL" win a game ball a few weeks back? Why is it that Pork Chop replaces the left guard Sims, rather than the "worst right guard in the NFL". Pork can play all four line positions so it would seem logical that he should be replacing the "worst right guard in the NFL", unless, of course, Sims is the worst left guard in the NFL. Then, I suppose, it would be a wash. If you were a coach, would you want the "worst right guard in the NFL" comming back next year, as Holmgren has indicated in his inteview, even as a backup? Finally, how does the "worst right guard in the NFL" manage to stay in the league for 15 years?
Adding Faneca and Jake Scott would do miracles for this team. I could probably run through the holes that could open.
I have no problem with adding them 2 to be our "big off season signings." We could simply go with our needs in the draft, RB/TE/DT.
Papahawk -- I hustle to sign Hackett b/c he's a very good receiver, maybe the best on our roster, and he's young and ready to hit the best years of his career. Burleson did show improvement this year, and Engram had a great year, no doubt, but I still think that whatever improvements we may make to the run game, this is still Hasselbeck's team, a passing team, and we should keep that part of the offense well-stocked. Going into the season with only Nate and Bobby, leaves us pretty shorthanded. Hackett has been injury-prone, it's true, but none of them seem to be the type that should be chronic; and we don't know at all what we'll have from Branch when he comes back from the surgery.
I like seeing the mainly positive comments on here re Holmgren. Not only has he done a ton for this franchise from a competitiveness and credibility aspect, he also really seems like a decent guy to me. I like it when my team wins, but it's also nice to root for people who at least seem like good guys.
I think Bruzyb has it right, Holmgren will continue to take it one year at a time, and if we are lucky enough to win a super bowl, that will be when we know he'll retire. Only to come back to the sport in a couple years, when he realizes he misses it . . .
Frank, you scared me with your opening line: "Mike Holmgren spoke for about 40 minutes, mostly about his decision to retire."
This would have been clearer, I think: Mike Holmgren spoke for about 40 minutes, mostly about his decision whether to retire. I'll be very excited if he signs an extension. The window on the Seahawks' Super Bowl hopes *might* close with another coach. Melvin
Canfan, I'm with you. My heart sank when I read the opening line: "Mike Holmgren spoke for about 40 minutes, mostly about his decision to retire."
Holmgren is the best thing to happen to the Seahawks since Allen saved the team from going to L.A. I also think he still has that competitive fire and he knows this team is very close to another Super Bowl. I can't imagine him walking away from it now.
Biggest off season moves
1. Figure out if Marshal can actually be a D-coordinator at this level. He was TOTALLY out coached in GB. 2. If our young Oline guys aren't progressing lets look at that position too. I would love to Gilbertson be more involved. His lines always played well at UW (too bad the rest of the team didn't) How many times did our running backs get the ball to be met by 2/3/4 Defensive guys already in the backfield. The problem - Holmgren might be too loyal and not want to make changes. that might push him out the door. We need to make upgrades in those areas. Locklear and Trufant IMO are our biggest needs to resign. I still have concerns about Hackett and health - I like him but we need someone who can stay healthy for the whole season!!!! FA additions - a Guard!!! and any one who will fit our scheme at a good price. Lots of options in the draft!!
I Definitely agree after re-signing Trufant and Locklear, our first free agency step should be to improve our gaurd positions. Alan Faneca would be a great addition.
Although i do like the running backs in this draft..I highly doubt mcfadden, stewart, slaton will be available to us. We could probably get the most bang for our buck (late 1st round) at improving our glaring weakness at the TE position. I don't see getting a good blocking tight end as a priority. Mike holmgrens version of the WCO has always dealt with a large portion of TE being able to stretch the field. I personally would like to see a TE that can do both i.e fred davis USC. It is a good possibilty that he may fall to our pick. As far as hackett goes, i do not have a strong opinion. A great big reciever... when he is healthy. We definitely have the depth to move on without him. Let's cross our fingers that our depth was due to good scouting and not heavy on our recently departed (nolan cromwell) WR coaching. I saw that someone had the Idea of burleson being slot reciever. Burleson's weakness as a WR is running routes. Great slot recievers are excellent route runners. I.e engram and welker Cut alexander a no brainer?....HA HA HA HA that would simply be the most unproductive thing you could do for this team next year. There is no back that will go in the late 1st round that will come in and be our savior. Lets all cross our fingers that the injury bug has finally been denounced from Tubbs. If not....time to move on. My opinion on holmgren....Please come back.THE BEST head coach the city of seattle has seen for any franchise. Come back for a few more years to help smooth the transition to Jim Mora (screw the redskins).
Hackett will be fine, he only has a sprained ankle, by next season he will be fine. And no we cant afford to lose him--he allready has chemistry with Hass, and even if we replaced Hack with a Chad Johnson type talent, there would be chemistry issues. Hass needs hackett and Engram.
Burleson might be able to play slot--but he cannot be counted on. And that is the number 1 trait of a slot reciever--dependability. Also, Burleson lacks toughness and strenth. He is a better fit at Split End, and face it folks, you never know when he will drop a pass right in his hands, or run the wrong route...He is a number 3 WR at best. Branch getting hurt screwed us. His salary will count against the cap, and he isnt going to be playing until almost November. He wont even get in shape in time for the playoffs. What an absolute waste. It isnt all Branch's fault, but he is at the moment the worst free agent acquisition in franchise history. The hawks need to sign Hackett and Trufant and loclear--but where is the cap room? Branch is hogging 7 mill, Burleson is hogging 3 or 4 million, and Rocky Bernard is using up 4 mill. Faneca will want 6-8 million a year, and he has a crappy attitude--do we really want that here? We need a TE or two, and a big run-stuffer DL. How do we pay for all this? Im not sure we can. If I were Ruskell, I would pay Branch and cut him now. Cut our losses with him. Second worst mistake he made, next to losing "the ice fisherman". Bring Burleson in, get him to take a pay cut to less than 2 million a year: if he wont take it, cut him: there are lots of great athletes out there, some of whom can catch the ball consistently, many of whom can return kicks, and ALL will make less than Burleson. Same with SA--dude needs to take a pay cut down to 3 or 4 million, so the team can remain competitive. Bernard may come back and be a sack-master again, but I doubt it. He is a great run-stuffer, so maybe he's worth his 4 million. Then, with the money saved, I would sign Hackett, trufant, and Locklear. After that, if there is any cap room, go after two more lineman,a TE, and a LARGE DL. The draft should be used to find a future rb (NOT in the 1st round, as this is a deep draft for rb's), OL, DL, and TE. And no more wr's! Go get a young veteran, but no more wasted mid-round picks! Enough with smurfs, Ruskell! Draft some DL with size as well as heart!
Um, I watched Burleson all season and I have to say, he saved us on more occasions that any other offensive player other than Engram. Burleson didn't drop that many passes...and more importantly, he made BIG plays when we desperately needed them. Next to Hasselbeck, to me, Burly was the MVP of our offense. He has spark, and while he screws up on occasion, he ALWAYS makes up for it. Think Ryan Grant...the goat who became the God in 60 minutes. Those traits are the same type that Burleson has...and we need more guys like him who can make things happen and who have that personality. We have too many guys who are patient and calm and don't find ways to channel the competitive fires into big plays. Babs is another guy who seems to be able to channel his energies into big plays, even though he screws up on a few every game. Burleson is key to us getting to the superbowl, if for no other reason that he is electric.
GeorgeOh - He was the worst right guard in the NFL. I'm not saying he sucked when he was younger. You must think Joe Montana at this state in life if a better QB than Hasselbeck if that's your logic.
Not everyone who performs best gets a game ball. There would be situations where one guy got a game ball almost every week and that's not good for the team. You divide it up. I don't know how in the hell Gray got a game ball though. I like the guy, I really do and appreciate all he has done for the team but he just doesn't have it anymore. I am fine with him being on the team next year if it's as a backup center. Womack isn't the worst right guard in the NFL if he wasn't a starting right guard. And Sims was terrible too but at least he has potential to get better.
I think a few of you are missing the point with respect to me thinking the 'Hawks needing a good/dominant blocking TE.
Good receiving TEs are not available in FA (guys like Smith and Johnson used to be decent, but they aren't good anymore). You can't draft one in the first few rounds and expect them to make a major impact the first year and get voted to the Pro Bowl. I support drafting one relatively early for the sake of the future, but I don't see how we are going to be able to get a great one for '08 (free agency or the draft). Good blocking TEs can be gotten. I'm sick of our current jack of all trades and master of none TEs. None of them are either... 1. Great receivers 2. Great blockers They seem to do a little bit of both, but neither really well. I like Heller as a back-up TE but he's not an overly great receiver and while he's a decent blocker, he's not a dominating blocker. At least if we could get a dominant blocker, we would have someone with a strength at this position (while we develop a drafted TE who will be good down the road). Remember Hannam and the way he could seal the corner in '05? We could run left (for obvious reasons) and we could run right, especially when Hannam was in in a certain situation for Stevens. Run blocking is about all offensive players being good blockers, not just the offensive line (although that's the main focus).
I am with jjhsix, in that Holmgren needs to extend to 2010 (3 more years while Hassey is in his prime)
A Free Agent link Im using: http://www.draftdaddy.com/nfldraft/freeagentoffense.cfm Faneca - a must upgrade Hackett - if not overpriced with performance incentives agreed, plus I think he will resign here as some big name WR will be out there and will overshadow DJ being on the market (DJ is 14th best FA WR on list) Shaun - Im 50/50 on it. I want to see Mo as the feature back with a young pup as the backup - but I want to see if he has one more year left in him (don't think he will restructure though) Russell - not impressed with his first year here and thought he missed some costly tackles and assignments, would like to see a young understudy drafted this year Tru - Franchised (if have too) TE position - Big Name in Draft or pry LJ Smith away from Philly
les,
Wrong again regarding Hackett. To say he 'only has a sprained ankle' is understating things. That sprained ankle kept the kid out of 10 games this year. How can you then go on to say that Burleson, who played in EVERY game, and returned kicks in addition to his WR duties lacks strength? Hackett should be signed for a mid level 1 year contract and then let the kid prove he can ACTUALLY stay on the field for more than 5 or 6 games a year.
I dont think we need to worry about Ruskell and Co. and what players they target in the draft......they have done a great job so far and I have no doubts that they will address the needs in the running game and add some good young talent!!
I would like to see some changes on the offense, but Holmy said that is where they will spend most of their offseason addressing. I feel good about the organization and the fact that we are competitive most every year....and that is rare. I want Holmy back, he is the franchise savior and should have atleast one major street named after him in the city!! I never felt that we were a legitimate contendor this year for the SB. I knew that our running game would be a problem when you play one of the best 8 teams in the league. Honestly, if we could have run the ball at all....we may have been able to hold on to a lead in GB last week especially getting a 14 pt spot.
What about moving Weaver to TE?
As far as running game, clearly we need an upgrade at the O line and I'd love to see them pick up some stud RB in the Thurman Thomas type mold...Indy grabbed Addai who fits that type as well...someone who can run AND catch.
The need to fix the offense is well documented but I think the defense has a major problem that needs addressing. Not sure exactly what it is but it is just not the same on the road as it is at home. And overall we give up way too many 3rd-and-longs. The D was completely exposed for all its weaknesses in GB Saturday. Certainly a Tubbs sort of a DT will help but I am not sure that is the only problem the D has. New D coach?
Hawks cant sign Locklear, Franchise Trufant, Sign Josh Brown and Sign Faneca....Faneca will not be going to Seattle..they dont have cap room for him and they have Alexander HORRID contract to deal with..Guaranteed 2.7 cap amount for 2008 if they cut him, 8.7 if they dont...
No way Burleson takes a pay cut after the year he had as a returner and Reciver...Burleson is the key..You draft a Chris Johnson from East Carolina, he can be a returner and a RBack. He is the fastest guy in the College Ranks. Put Burleson back at Reciver and let himn just return Punts and be a reciever, then your set.
Hawks need to cut Alexander First, then adress the reciver spot...Obu did well and he can be counted on.
Since the topic here is whether Holmgren might retire, I'll say my fingers and toes are crossed that he will continue another year! We've seen many many coaches fail in the NFL. Holmgren is one of the few great ones.
For those saying get rid of D Coordinator Marshall. You've got to be kidding. He pulled together new guys into a ferocious unit this year. That's great coaching. Now we need to keep guys together to play better as a team. We cannot lose Trufant or Locklear if we expect to be a better team next year. Keeping Brown is important too. On offense: OG: We obviously need one new starting OG next year, and a backup C. Old War-Horse Chris Gray will likely retire. Willis or Pork Chop should rise to the occasion at the other G spot, with Sims as a backup. With the new expanded cap, we can expect Ruskell to overpay to bring in a starting Guard. We can't assume its Faneca since there may be a bidding war for him. TE: Obvious need. RB: Needed at some point soon, but we are already paying Shaun A whether we cut him or not, so lets hope he returns healthy and motivated. WR: Obamanu and Courtney Taylor are both big fast guys with potential to replace DJ Hackett, and Jordan Kent is waiting in the wings. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't miss Deion Branch at all next year. Our D is 90% ready for a championship. Forget Green Bay, that snow storm could have made chumps of any defense. I think the two things our D needs is: 1. A Big DE 2. Marcus Tubbs 1. DE Daryl Tapp cannot stop the run on 1st down. When matched against a 2nd-string LOT, he got sacks but when he played against top-notch LOTs he completely disappeared from games. He is too small to play DE on first and second down. He would best be used as a situational pass rusher or third DE to rotate in and keep the starters fresh. 2. Tubbs. I think it is more likely that Tubbs can return to health than it is we could find a DT as good as he in the draft. We cannot afford to overpay for a DT in free agency since we have other needs. Tubbs came back surprisingly quick from microfracture surgery and then popped the ACL on his OTHER knee. Both knees should be fully recovered by next training camp, and if so, Marcus will be a huge upgrade to he D line, improving the run-stopping, the pass-rush, and the whole defense.
Running game running game running game. We havve to make som D adjust ments but I have to believe nothing else matters if you cannot run the ball and have no threat of running the ball. Way too one dimentional of a team. Hasselbeck has a good day, we win - he doesn't we lose. Let's address the O-line problems but please - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD- don't make me watch Alexander again. I seriously cannont stomach another year watching him.
I've never been very excited about Marshall as our D-coordinator. I don't know if a change will be better, but I heard Monte Kiffin is now available. If for some reason he would like to join Timmy up here in the Northwest I think he'd be a dramatic upgrade. He is one of the top 3 D-coordinators in the league.
For the Hackett lovers (I'm one too when he's healthy)... Holmgren did say yesterday that he thought one of the strengths of the team was it's young WRs who haven't gotten much of a chance to play yet (Ben O-B-1-kenobe, Payne, Kent, and Taylor). I'd like to resign Hackett at a reasonable salary but if worse comes to worse, I'd rather go into next season with an unproven WR than a crap guard.
