The Seahawks have named former Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor to replace the departed Jim Zorn in similar capacity, the team announced this afternoon.
Also, the team signed guard Mike Wahle to a multi-year contract. Wahle, a two-time Pro Bowl pick, started 16 games for the Carolina Panthers in 2007 and has started 128 of 142 career games.
Originally selected in the second round (24th overall) of the 1998 Supplemental NFL Draft by Green Bay, Wahle played seven years for the Green Bay Packers before signing as a free agent by Carolina in 2005. In 2005 and 2006 he played in the Pro Bowl.
Lazor will begin his sixth NFL season in 2008 after spending the previous four with Washington, serving his final two years as quarterbacks coach. He originally began his Redskins career as an offensive assistant in 2004 after a season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003.
Before breaking in to the NFL, he was an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the University of Buffalo from 2001-02. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Cornell, working with running backs, receivers, quarterbacks and tight ends while also serving as the recruiting coordinator from 1998-2000.
While at Cornell, he set 26 school passing and total offensive records.
COMMENTS:
Call me crazy, but I think SA will make it the whole year without injury, and run for 1,300 yards and 15 TD's.
SI and other folks think Ruskell is gonna Franchise Tru. I dont see it--this is the guy who was absolutely sure LG's werent worth 7 million a year. Tru is gone, Hackett is too, now all we can do is hope Wilson can play well and our young wr's step up...And maybe we have the cap space to resign Locklear and Brown.
That way we could focus on TE in the 1st round and then a replacement for Big Walt in the second round to start developing.
Keep in coming.
Offseason is what they call it when your dead. There are literally hundreds of topics to cover here guys, keep it comin Beene!
SuperHawk--man, I hope youre right, but NFL says that the hawks are only 10 million under the cap, and even by the best estimates I've seen, they can only get to about 16 million under. Maybe they have more wiggle room than we know with restructuring contracts, but I havent heard anything on that front...Anyway, I sure hope you and Clayton are right.
The reason Ruskell wouldn't pay LG's is because NOBODY paid LG's until the Vikings did. Now the market has been shoved upwards by them. Everyone else follows. Thanks Vikings! I'm sure we got a bargain in Wahle. I'm still trying to figure out how Wahle will turn 31 in March, and is already a ten year veteran. Especially with him coming out of Navy. Don't you have to wait two years after graduating from Navy? So, if he graduated at age 22, then two years of service, he's 24. Then ten years of pro ball, his birthday hasn't hit yet, so he's 33. But he's 30, turning 31 in March. So did he leave early? Or did he not have to sit out two years? I'd love to know the chronology on that. I believe American birthdates though. Especially when he's from Portland.
I hope he has a mean streak. he has a mean goatee!
Comment: Wahle has a very good combination of size, athleticism and experience. He has been extremely consistent over the years. He can play tackle in a pinch. He plays with good technique and body control. He is physical, nasty and tough. He is an excellent finisher. He plays with good bend, initial quickness and a flat back off the line. He has good lower-body strength and routinely creates movement at the point of attack. He gets good hand placement and has the strong hands to sustain his blocks. He stays square and understands body position and angles. He has the agility to slide off combination blocks and get position at the second level. He has the quickness and agility to pull effectively and will aggressively seek out a target to take out. He has a quick pass set and plays with a solid base and good balance. His technique and athleticism allow him to recover when beaten initially. He is stout inside and will help maintain pocket depth. He plays with very good awareness of line stunts. Wahle has few weaknesses, but he occasionally gets beaten by good double moves. He would have some trouble with speed rushers as a tackle.
Physical, nasty and tough...think we might need that on the O-line? :-) Nice move, Tim Ruskell
In retrospect, even though I felt the offer shouldn't be matched, it might have been better just to give Hutch the guarenteed money. We'd have won more games the last two years and might have even been back to a Super Bowl. Besides, he's a Hall of Famer.
not to mention we could have spent the Sims, Wrotto and Vallos picks on a TE.
what i want ot know is why we haven't signed Josh..
Are you really that dense? Steve Hutchinson, for the last crutching time, DID NOT WANT TO BE IN SEATTLE!!! If he did, why did he and his agent allow the poison pill?
Also, nice pick up by the hawks! But I'm sure if Wahle gets hurt this year all you Ruskell haters will be bashing him for signing a Guard who is 30 years old.
Haha! Nope. If Marcus Trufant isn't on the team next year, I will eat my shorts. He is a Seahawks lifer. Ruskell will sign him to a long-term, big-money contract, or he will lock him down with the franchise tag.
Your LG comparison doesn't hold any weight. While he might undervalue a offensive guard, cornerback is a premium defensive position, and he is a defense-emphasis GM.
Give him some credit. Ruskell nearly single-handedly put us in the Super Bowl. Period.
Sure, in retrospect, Ruskell should have franchised him, but at that time there was no way he could anticipate that ludicrous contract and poison pill loophole -- it was unprecedented. And Hutch was the one who signed the contract, knowing it would prohibit the 'Hawks from matching.
People who devalue Tim Ruskell's impact on the Seahawks, devalue Super Bowl appearances.
Other than the hiring of Mike Holmgren in the late '90s, acquiring Ruskell is the single most important decision in the history of the franchise.
People who think otherwise aren't worthy of any intelligent football conversation. No need to even address them.
The draft is our chance and we better capitalize. Put together a solid line, 1st round is a play-making tight-end, 2nd round we benefit from the deepest RB draft in 20 years.
I love Ruskell!!! Always have, always will.
Put any line you want together but if we don't do something on the RB front it won't matter.
I disagree. A great line makes an average back look good, and a good back look like a superstar. In 2005, Shaun was a good back. Today, Shaun is an average back.
The draft is our chance and we better capitalize. Put together a solid line, 1st round is a play-making tight-end, 2nd round we benefit from the deepest RB draft in 20 years.
Almost completely agree. USC TE Fred Davis in the first round. Defensive tackle in the second round. Running back third round.
I'm a TR supporter. He's only made 2 major mistakes, & most of us including me supported the Shaun Alexander contract. (Let's hope Deon Branch's injuries don't turn him into mistake #3!).
---
BTW, I would be astounded if Wahle counts more than 1.5mil against the cap this year(and not stunned if he counted for less) It is written he signed/is signing a multi-year deal and there will no doubt be some cap magic going on..
I'd much rather have a guy like Carlson (good receiving TE, but decent blocking TE; much better than Davis) in the earlier second round and an extra pick or two.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/2020ap_fbn_seahawks_signings.html
It says that we got a home town discount because his parents have a second home in Bainbridge Island and his dad played high school ball in Seattle. It also speculates that he will get $3M per year in salary and add the signing bonus on top of that to get to his cap number. It says his salary last year was $6M and that's why he was cut - free up some cap space.
Pappa,
I think the chronology works if you opt out of the military acadamy between your sophmore and Junior years. You don't owe any time to the government if you do that. Also, he may not have recieved an active duty commission which would have made him have to attend Reserve or Guard drills, etc. This would allow him to be able to play. Also, think about Roger Staubach and how long he waited. I think the military academies will relent a bit if the person really wants to persue a professional athlete's career.
All,
Those of you that don't want another Guard, are you saying you wouldn't want the starting Guard from the Colts? Really? Does it really matter who is running the ball with Walt, Wahle, Spencer, Lilja and Lock as your o-line? Especially since we know that Lilja and Wahle won't be fooled by defensive stunts giving Hass all day to throw and forcing the defense into a coverage scheme. that alone opens up more running plays.
Also, Pork is a free agent but Gray is under contract for one more year. Gray should be kept as mentor and a backup to the Center and Guard positions in my opinion.
SA was a great player for this team. However, it is obvious that he has lost a step and, with his age and style of running (often based on improv, not necessarily hitting the hole with his first step), I do not think that he will have be able to recover form or remain injury free.
Regarding other comments: Trufant will stay (franchise or contract) and we need a TE. I don't care who, I just don't want one that drops balls in the playoffs! (i.e. Stevens and Pollard)
Sandoman didn't take a vacation. He might be getting a divorce, he might be doing drugs, but he didn't take a vacation! No off season for the Sandoman. God bless him.
cram says: ... Also #37 will be here till mini camp and then released with a cap hit of only $125,000 or so.
I thought #37 would only save $125,000 if let go. For that money, sign him! Cut him next year or something, but sign him for this year. He's a much better back up than MoMo. Especially for $125,000.
Surf Hawk says: Yes SeaHawks, way to make this move. ... A new LG and a new Line coach, so far I'm liking the way this is heading...
Amen, Bro. Amen! New coaches, new players! I'm an optimist. Go 'Hawks!
Thanks, though, to Darrin for filling in for Frank. It's not his primary responsibility, but at least he is getting the information up here, just not anywhere close to first, clearly. Seahawksddicts and seahawkblue are two of the most timely sources of information on the Seahawks, and in the case of Lazor, we knew over there last freakin' Friday that Lazor was going to be the new Seahawks QB coach.
"With the first pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks select..."
To all the Alexander haters: Give him another year. He played with a broken hand and sprained ankle in 2007. In 2006, he had a broken foot. A month after the Super Bowl XL the team took a big hit when Hutch signed to the Minnesota Dikes. We all agree that Hutch's departure was key to Seattle's failed running game the past two years.
In 2008 the Hawks will start the off-season with:
new O-line coach Mike Solari who has tutored some of the best linemen in the NFl,
a much more formidable O-line with Wahle added to the roster,
and a healthier Shaun Alexander.
With the improvements already implemented this early in the off-season, there should be little to no excuses for Alexander and the running game.
Now granted that type of play prolongs your career...but it does not win ball games. I can only imagine how many more games Seattle could have won over the years if they had someone that was a complete back.
Now I agree let Sims and wrotto go into training camp fighting for that RG spot. Let gray and Womack go as their time has come and plus Womack leaving to find Starting spot else where so good riddiance as he just injury prone OL his whole career.
You're crazy.
"Other than the hiring of Mike Holmgren in the late '90s, acquiring Ruskell is the single most important decision in the history of the franchise.
People who think otherwise aren't worthy of any intelligent football conversation. No need to even address them."
Gotta love these demigods with their "anyone who disagrees with me is an idiot" mentalities. Right, it was Timmay!, in his very first off season that got the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. The guy who used a 3rd round pick on David Green, let Hutchinson walk (and disrespected him by not extending his contract before he hit free agency or at least Franchising him like Holmgren expected, which is why he agreed to the poison pill, payback to Ruskell for disrespect, not be because he didn't want to be here, for the umpteenth time), did nothing to address he offensive line last year, did nothing to address tight end, traded away a 1st round pick that could have gotten us a starting left guard in the draft--Ben Grubbs, traded away at least one of our 6th round picks for Charlie Frye (stroke of genius alright), traded away another pick on Alvin Pearman who promptly went on IR, wasted a 1st round pick on Chris Spencer, screws the team with the big contract for Alexander, drafts injury prone Tubbs and passes on Steven Jackson, dumps the reliable Darche for the Rackley/Stutz/37 year old who was out of football for 2 years (brilliant!) so he can keep bringing in Falcon/Bucs rejects, and let's our best corner (which isn't saying a lot) reach free agency without extending his contract. Oh yeah, Timmay! is the sole reason we got to the Super Bowl his first year here.
"Mike Wahle, a 10-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler signed a multi-year contract today. He started all 16 games for the Carolina Panthers last season at left guard and has started 128 of 142 career games played. Originally selected in the second round (24th overall) of the 1998 Supplemental NFL Draft by Green Bay, he played seven years for the Packers before signing as a free agent by Carolina in 2005. That season, he started all 16 games and was voted to his first Pro Bowl, starting the game at left guard. He also represented Carolina in the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, named to the squad as an injury substitute."
Is the same text that seahawks insider uses.... same as seahawks.com
It was originally first posted here, http://www.seahawks.com/News/PressReleases.aspx?id=68560. I'm just curious is all.
"Rambling, rambling, tryin' to get my mind unscrambled"...
SI was the first to report on the story. Mike Kahn is too busy playing with the NBA to focus on the Hawks in the off-season (I think he actually puts in more total hours reporting than Sando used to, although Sando was much more devoted to covering all the aspects of the Hawks).
He had a chance to talk about it on his segment on KJR but he was too busy talking about baseball and Jason Kidd.
BobbyK, if Mendenhall and Stewart and Davis and Otah are gone, I can see your scenario but think you are being a little pie in the sky to think they could pick up another second by dropping a few spots...probably add a third, maybe a third and fourth, plus the other teams highest pick ... but who knows?
Davis does need to learn to block, and if that is who they target (if Stewart and Mendenhall are gone) then they can drop a few and still get Fred Davis (not Kellen Davis, who is a lazy bum). Carlson is not the answer. Bennett in the second is a strong possibility at TE, if not, drop down for Cottam or Finley later.
While Tru will probably be franchised, that means they will have to lock up Josh Brown early. If they don't franchise Tru (or get a deal done) then look for a corner early: Cason, or Talib in the first or Cromartie-Rodgers in the second.
Sam Baker was better in his sophomore year than his senior year, he did not develop one iota. Over hyped with over hyped team.
With few other decent targets in F/A, Lilja or Scott would be excellent choices - but I think the bidding might be a bit too high now. If they do not plan on resigning Locklear they will likely go after Lilja or Scott. Their actions on RFA'ing Locklear will tell us that.
Clayton in overly optimistic on that $20 mil in cap, more like $9 minus Wahle with some restructuring coming.
There is no reason in the world to even talk about releasing Shaun until after the draft because he provides some intrigue as to whom we will draft. And, it appears Clayton's numbers of $125,000 the Hawks lose if they dump Shaun is correct. It's major restructuring for SA or down the road ... probably be down the road anyway with all the RB's in the draft with my pref for Ray Rice as our second if Stewart and Mendenhall gone before our first.
And as long as they get, in order, Schmitt, Hillis or Hester in the draft the Seahawks will have had a positive off-season.
It ain't over yet. But Wahle is an excellent first step.
"Ramblin, scramblin"...
Anyone else see the same thing?
Ruskell talks about integrity and loyalty, but he shows little of either in his dealings with the players: he treated Urban like crap, did the same to Bryce Fisher, and made some other dicey decisions (signing Herndon, cutting Dyson).
Look, Ruskell isnt a bad GM: he has made some great decisions, and got us to the Super Bowl. But, his mistakes were huge in keeping us out of the big game the last two years. He cant continue screwing up and relying on his helping us make one losing Super Bowl appearance. Its time to put up or shut up...How he handles the Free Agency and draft this year will seal his fate: if he signs or adequately replaces Lock, Tru, Hackett, and Brown he will be fine, if not...
Pork Chop is very valuable due to his ability to play fairly well at any position on the line except center. And, for the first time, he made it a whole year without injury. He may be more important to resign than Lock, as Lock only plays T, and we MAY be able to play well at RT with Ash, Willis, or Chop. Hard to say, but time will certainly tell.
Willis seems to have the best shot at starting at RG--or RT if Lock leaves. He is young and strong and played well in spot-duty last year, once he got over his injury. Who knows about Sims--he never got better last year, and Wrotto is a mystery.
Signing Lilja or Scott would be cool, but we may not need them. And the Hawks appear to have limited cap space--not even enough to resign thier 4 key Free Agents, let alone Chop and the draft picks.
I think the eagles are going to go after Hackett, and New Orleans as well. Can we depend on Taylor and Obi-wan to be a number 1 or 2 reciever next year? Will burleson step up and be consistent? If we lose Tru, will we get torched? Is Lock worth the money he will command? These questions are the key to a Hawk Super Bowl.
The reason, nighthawk2, that we don't consider much if any of what you or hawks4372 say to be worthwhile is that you always just come on here negative and flaming players, coaches, or management. You don't give credit where it is due, you only flame away at mistakes, blow them out of proportion, and call your opinions "facts". Fact, Hutch seems to be the only player ever to use the excuse "they didn't franchise me" as a reason to disrespect. Until then, and even since, most guys franchised are pissed about it, like Walt was for the two years prior, and hold out or refuse to sign a long term deal unless not franchised again the next year. So most aren't going to believe that line from Hutch, as franchising would have limited him to LESS money than he ended up getting as a transition player, not more. Duh. OH, and poison pills had never happened before, so duh, no one knew they could.
So while in retrospect, of course, we all agree transitioning was a mistake, AND SO DOES RUSKELL, it didn't seem to be a big risk at the time, as they simply wanted to pay him the market value, paying him more than any other team would, and we would have if not for the poison pill making the deal much more expensive for us than for the Vikings. Here it is, years later, and all you can do is continue to rag on a situation that was not particularly forseeable. We all agree it sucked, but it's long over and wasn't a particularly dumb move, simply a mistake due to unforeseeable issues that came up.
Good Moves:
* Drafting Tatupu, Hill, Jennings, Mebane
* Signing Jurevicious, Kerney, Peterson, Grant, Dyson and Darby
Ok Move:
* Signing of Burelson. I sense this may turn out to be a good move at the end.
* Russell - ok in pass coverage but I cringe when he has to make a TD saving tackle on a RB
Bad Moves:
* Not locking up prospective FAs before they hit FA - he cant even sign the Kicker. He likes to buy high and sell low.
* Trading a 1st Round draft pick for Branch
* Hutchinson - Snyder invented the poison pill several years before with Coles, he should have known that
* Long Snappers - cost Seahawks the Bears playoff game and a few games this year
We Dont Know Yet Moves:
* Drafting of Spencer, Sims, Wrotto, WIlson, Tapp
* Weaver as Strong's replacement - great runner, bad FB so far
Good anaylisis, Pabuwal, that is what I like to see, some facts thrown in there and an impartial view.
Anyone heard any thoughts on who the new RB coach might be?
My only question would be is a RB coach a 'starter' position in that it is a way to bring in a very talented player and see if he can transition into the coaching ranks or is it something were you go out and find someone with prior coaching experience?
I guess the Hawks werent interested in Ernest Byner, which surprises me. Byner is working with some running back (Rice? Slaton?) coming out of college after his junior year, getting him ready to ace the combine. Can Mack Strong teach our rb's to be Pro-Bowlers? Can he get SA back on track? I dont know the answer to that one, but I'd think the Hawks need to find someone with some experience, and keep Strong around as an assistant at first.
Im really nervous about the upcoming wr situation. Any thoughts?
It would be dumb to release Shaun before the draft, as that would tip our hand too much - Timmy won't do that.
leshthomas
Holmgren said at his press conference that he thought the young WRs are a strength of this team. I see us letting Hacket move on and not getting any production from Branch (thanks to his ACL tear). That doesn't mean I agree, it just means I think we are going to go into next season with Burleson and Engram... and then the Jedi Knight, Taylor, Payne, and Kent will fight it out.
Michael Turner would look good in a Hawk uniform, but he's likely to command a 3-5 year contract of 4-5 million a year, which is so far out of our realm its not in the same solar system...
Carolina just gave a crap load of money to their LT. They are franchising their RT. They are moving their C to RG and their 2nd round pick last year is taking over at C. Wahle counted a bunch against the cap this year and they are investing too much into their line already this off-season to keep him around. They certainly didn't release him because he sucks. We are lucky to have him! Finally! A real left guard in Seattle! It seems like so long ago we had decent LG play!
I dont see Ruskell seeing Dunn as an upgrade to Alexander, especially since Alexander will count against our cap so high this year even if we cut him. And Dunn wont play for small $. I think the Hawks would be ok with Weaver, Morris, SA and a rookie 2nd or 3rd rounder, there are 4-5 great backs in the draft who can block and catch.
Besides, Alexander has become the ultimate team player over the last 3 years. The transformation has been rather incredible, from back-stabbed crybaby to a guy willing to work hard in any role the team requires.
While he didnt earn his money stats-wise last year, he earned a lot of it with his attitude and poise. And he came back from his '06 injury to have 3 of the best games of his life, against GB, San Deigo (Ive never seen anyone run so hard) and the Bears, so he earned his money that year too. So its not like Dunn has anything on SA there. So long as the new RB coach makes SA quit avoiding hits and the line plays decent, he'll get his 1,000 yards and earn his money.
And I dont see Dunn as a guy who is capable of 1,000 yards no matter how good the line is.
Crumpler can block and catch, but he's old and expensive. Still, it wouldnt surprise me to see Ruskell sign him. It's a gamble, but he cant be worse than Pollard.
Your soft spot for Urban is reminds me of how Holmgren seemed to adore Isiah Kacyvenski. Kaz was a good guy and hard worker, and -- knowing his difficult family circumstances to his Harvard successs -- Kaz was someone you could easily to root for. But when it came down to it, he was a pretty mediocre player. And when he got cut from the roster, it was clearly a business decision.
Unless Fisher and Urban are kicking ass with their respective new teams, and last I checked they're hardly impact players, I don't see why you're being critical.
Fisher was still productive and was benched for more rotation time for Tapp, who is a liability against the run, which Fisher was not. The guy we got to replace Fisher, Babin, was worse than worthless.
Kaz wasnt treated well either--he was a fine special teams player, and Ruskell was jerking him around, saying oh we'll probably pick you up in a week or two and Kaz had heard that crap before. He left for a raise and a chance to start in st Louis (he shoulda known all the lambs wanted was a chance to pick his brain and beat Seattle) and they treated him even worse.
No, I dont think Ruskell is learning enough from his mistakes. Business is business, but when you expect more loyalty from players than you are willing to give yourself, and you open your mouth and talk integrity in the press, you should expect to be labled a hippocrite. Which is what Ruskell is.
Like I said before, Ruskell is a good GM, he is great at drafting players, and he has made some excellent Free Agent acquisitions. But he has made some pretty big gaffes, and doesnt seem to learn much from them. We'll see what this FA period and draft bring.
This means, we can go after Kentwan Balmer, DT from N. Carolina in the draft, if we don't get Stewart is gone in the first round. We'd be in the top 5 in Defense next year.
We can get great value for RB in the second or third round. and also go after the John Carlson, TE.
The Atlanta Falcons continued their franchise makeover in earnest on Friday, releasing tight eend Alge Crumpler, quarterback quarterback Byron Leftwich, offensive tackle Wayne Gandy and four other players......Crumpler, who just completed his seventh season, all with Atlanta, has 316 career catches for 4,212 yards and 35 touchdowns. He had been with the team since 2001 and was selected to five Pro Bowls.
ruskell
mora jr
has been in the west coast offense
TE problem
it just fits don't it
starting to fix the o-line problem with whale
could fix the tight end problem with crump
those first day picks could be a running back - snoop stewart -Rashard Mendenhall- felix jones - Ray Rice(biggest problem last year) defensive tackle Pat Sims, Kentwan Balmer,(tubbs and darby injuries) then that 3 round pick could be o-line depth or a tall reciever
priorties
trufant
crump
steller runningback in draft
Dtackle
o-line problems
tall receiver
Go Hawks!!!
In the Vick offense, Crumpler was not asked to be a consistent steady blocker as Mike was waiting to hit him as a safety valve or downfield.
He was Vick's main target over the years.
Crumpler is an "adequate" blocker.
Mora and Ruskell probably have talked to his agent in the last couple hours, or they have inside up to the minute scoop and decided not too, possibly because of the extent of his injuries.
Yeah, this signing will do it for name F/A's and the cap.
But that's more than OK.
Yankita, nix Balmer and Carlson. There are better choices out there.
also, if Ray Will is our starting RG, we could have the tallest guards in the NFL. Both Wahle and Willis are listed at 6'6"... i hope matt grows a few inches so that he can see over those guys.
It’s no different from the player’s standpoint. Sometimes the camaraderie of the team is enough to keep a player, and sometimes the opportunity to make more money is the driving force that takes them elsewhere. Does that make a player a hypocrite, or just opportunistic?
Regardless of Hasselbeck’s influence, Ruskell brought back Urban because it was the so-called “right thing to do.” It doesn’t mean you do that for every player. ESPECIALLY players like Urban, who, I’m sorry, is not that good. And please don’t tell me how Urban “torched” the Seahawks for 100 yards last year. Anquan Boldin was injured that game and most of Urban’s yard were during garbage time of a lopsided Seahawks victory. That’s no different than in 2005, watching Mo Morris rush for 100 yards and then thinking he could be the starting tailback for any team. Sorry, but a healthy Urban is no better than a No.4 receiver. Good guy, but without a doubt, replaceable.
Fisher was traded because the Hawks had a surplus of Defensive Ends. The Hawks traded Michael Boulware for Jason Babin weeks before Fisher was traded. It didn’t work out, but again, it was a business decision, not a slight on Fisher.
Again, my point is if you’re going to criticize Ruskell for cutting players, then you at least have to convince me that the Seahawks would have been better had they kept them. With Urban, Fisher, and Kaz, I’m not convinced they would’ve ultimately made the Hawks better.
I watch Urban, and the injury bug is still a concern. But he is tall and quick and strong, and he gets open in key situations. The last two years, the Hawks have been desperate for a tall reiciever who can make tough catches in traffic, run a fade in the red zone, and block. Urban can do all these things, and Hackett is the only wr we have who fits the bill currently--and we may lose him. As for garbage time, Urban did fine in the second quarter of that game, bringing the Tards within sight of victory before the Hawks pulled away. Garbage time was the fourth quarter. Most importantly, Urban knew our offesne well, and would have been a useful tool in our offensive aresenal. Name one game where Obiwan or Taylor or Payne or Kent made a drive-extending 20 yard reception to help beat a key opponent? Thats right, it hasnt happened. None of our 4th or 5th recievers have done this in the last two years--Urban did it in three games in '05, and 3 games in '07 for the Tards.
With Fisher, it looked to me like the Hawks benching him while he was still outplaying Tapp really hurt his him and his production. I just dont think Ruskell handled that situation well.
Kaz was still playing very well on special teams, and our special teams have consistently been an issue since. Josh Scobeys return made things better, but he broke his leg and may not be able to return to form. By now Kaz is over the hill, but at the time losing him hurt a lot more than Ruskell had thought. Again, the situation could have been handled with more class by better communication.
If you still dont think those guys made the Hawks better, thats life. Most of us agree Ruskell is a good GM, I just dont think he's a genius or anything. And his lack of class and communication skills in dealing with players is a real drawback.
The Ruskell pipeline continues.
Whatever, if Ruskell can sign Tru, Lock, Brown and Hackett, or replace them I'll be pretty happy with his performance as GM this year.
"My agents started receiving phone calls immediately that night, you know, Seattle was at the top of a short list of teams I was interested in going to. We were very fortunate when they called, they showed interest and wanted me to come up there and I wanted to not leave Seattle without getting a deal done.
"As soon as we found out Seattle was interested, I kind of closed off the six or seven other teams that were looking around."
Git 'er done, Timmy!!
pabuwal--Brown is being difficult. he wants like $2 million a year, which is ludicrous for a kicker. I think he wants close to Vinatieri money. Brown is better than Lawrence Tynes, but Tynes makes kicks in the Super Bowl, Brown misses them. Hopefully Brown will quit trying to get so much money for tackling Devin Hester and sign for 5 years 7 million like Tynes.
Here's the link:
http://www.nflpa.org/pdfs/NewsAndEvents/HotTopics/FranchiseAndTransition_2008.pdf
I would take Brown over Tynes any day...he makes the long kicks and given the chance to perform under pressure again, he'll come through. Plus, tackling Devin Hester is cool ;)
What's the deal with Rod Coleman? We need help w/ Tubbs' uncertainty...
Things are getting interesting! I cant wait to get Free Agency going--the suspense waiting to sign our FA's is killing me!
Crumpler Carolina bound?
February 15, 2008 3:10 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas
I remember interviewing Alge Crumpler at the Senior Bowl in January 2001. At the time, Crumpler was talking about his desire to play for the Carolina Panthers. He was born in Greenville, N.C., went to college at North Carolina and has relatives in Charlotte and Crumpler said going to the Panthers would be a dream come true.
That didn't happen as Crumpler became a second-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons. But, maybe, the scenario that Crumpler was hoping for then, could happen now.
Crumpler was released as part of a seven-player purge by the Falcons on Friday and that makes him a free agent at a time when the Panthers could be looking for a pass-catching tight end. Carolina offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson made a lot of noise about getting the tight ends more involved in the passing game when he was hired before last season.
That never really materialized because the Panthers were rotating quarterbacks and didn't have any big threats at tight end. But the Panthers haven't given up on the theory of getting more out of the position and part of their mission this offseason is to add some playmakers to complement wide receiver Steve Smith.
Carolina coach John Fox has a pretty good idea of what Crumpler, a five-time Pro Bowler, can do after trying to defend him twice a season since 2002. That's why a look at Crumpler by Carolina makes some sense.
Crumpler can make catches over the middle and stretch the field. If the Panthers really want to get more out of their tight ends (and make life easier for Smith), they need to get a true pass-catching tight end.
We will need DT at I think Darby is FA right? Rod Coleman gone make OL double team him? I mean Lofa would require DT to take some OL presure so he can get to QB.
Tubbs may indeed continue to be an injury casualty. If he gets hurt this year though, Ruskell will be sure to can his butt. I think Tubbs can stay healthy this year because he is a hard worker and he was very upset when he injured himself last year, which means he worked hard to get rehabbed. I just cant see a guy getting a season-ending injury three years in a row--the law of averages says he's bound to have at least one good year in three!
Mostly its just blind hope, something us long-time seahawks fans have needed to hold on through the dark ages of the Behring years. Guess I've still got a little of it, despite my general pessimism...
Apparently accidents only happen to anybody that is not a seahawk or professional athlete.
If we could sign Crumpler and draft a TE/Davis first round would be great....Would love to see Hart drafted in second round....
Seems top tier teams use a tandem in the backfield....
The second round we can pick a TE Martellus Bennett from TCU ,or Brad Cottam from ND.The third round maybe a DE.
The forth round there is a FB,I know a FB but this kid is something else.Owen Schmitt from WV he's 6'2" 250 lbs. 2007 he bent or broke more face masks than anyone else. There wouldn't be any more worry about 3rd an 2,or 1.
I'm still afraid that Ruskell will take a CB the first round.
Dont know what you mean by your accident comment...
Who is this Hart guy? I didnt see him play in college. Can he block and recieve or just one of the two?
bobbyk--thanks for the info on Coleman. Looks like he was a beast back when he played for the Raiders, and for a couple years with Atlanta.
We've no chance of getting a better TE than Alge, and Coleman is a freaking BEAST, although from what I've seen his play can be spotty. Also, I think both would love to play for a contender, especially after what they've just come out of.
Just curious? What lesson should Ruskell have learned from the Dielman situation? here's a quote:
"OLG Kris Dielman reportedly turned down more than $10 million in additional compensation to stay put with the Chargers. Dielman had what was believed to be a seven-year, $50 million offer on the table from the Seahawks but told his agent to go back to the Chargers and work out a deal because Seattle “just didn’t feel right.”
So Rusklell offered him more money yet Dielamn wanted to stay with the Chargers (gee imagine if Hutchinson had that kind of commitment to the Hawks) Not sure what lesson is to be learned form that.
1) Wahle - GREAT! Excellent flexibility now on o-line with a very strong L. side - again. If we loose Lock we have some options like Walls at RT, although I want to keep Lock.
2) A. Crumpler IS THE TE we need. 7 years exp., 5 pro bowls, 44 rec. 444 yds and 5 TD last year (QB turmoil in Atl.) These are numbers spoken for Pollard last year and Algie has done this for 7 strong years. Mora and Rusk know him - a GREAT fit. Then draft young TE in rnd 3 as draft is deep for TE and develop the tall fast Oregon TE we got last year.
3) Given 1 & 2 we have much greater flexibility in draft for needs at RB, DL (first and foremost) then if need be PK, WR, OL etc. as needed. Stud RB and big DT would help everyone on O and D side.
4) We need to sign Tru and Lock if possible. Those are high priority. If we can keep Brown and Hack - fine - but really folks - both can be replaced without breaking the bank. We have good WR depth and a PK is never a game breaker, but I do love Brown if we can keep him.
5) Coaching changes are GREAT. Last year GREAT ST coach and DB coach - this year great OL line coach. With Holmgren with one year and More starting in 2009 this is expected and doing this now with one more year of Holmgren is much better than doing it all next year. Contunity is important at the top and excellence at the position coaches is great. I expect next year we will get a new DC and OC but the supporting coaches may be the same. An excellent RB coach will help with SA decision and draft strategy - get him soon.
An aside - those who question the FO please answer this - what large gaping holes remain for the Hawks in 08 if we sign A. Crumpler and get a VG RB and DT in the draft? WR if we loose Hack? We do have good depth especially if our running game is resurrected next year and Ben O and CT come on well. Big strong WR's. PK is we loose Brown? Can be replaced. RT if we loose Lock? Round 3 in draft or FA or the guys we have on roster.
Honestly look at the possible 53 man roster even at this early date, and and 2 - 3 starters or role players in the draft and by gosh things are looking up. I expect Paul Allen and Tim R. and all the FO and coaches and players really want to give Mike all he needs to go out on top and to set the stage for Mora to follow. A class organization and team that isn't perfect but is doing well, by any standards, except SB wins, and that may come in '08.
GO SEAHAWKS
Badcat, we need an all around fullback who we will get in the draft.
We need another corner more than we need another WR.
We need Mr. Jones replacement.
Even if Branch doesn't return until mid-season and Hackett gets grabbed up, we've got Logan Payne who is, reportedly, ready and who knows what is going on with Jordan Kent.
Gaping, no. Glaring, no. Criticizing the FO, no. Needs, yes.
And, sure, he was an idiot in the Urban situation. We've all f-ed up. I'm not a suck up, but he's done a nice job of adding decent guys. The core of the team is not of his doing... I still believe that Hass/Walt are our 2 most important players and he did nothing to bring them to Seattle. He hasn't drafted any superstars other than Lofa and he did resign Alexander even though Hutch had more of an impact with our running game in '05. All bs aside, I hope this is the year... and that we get the Packers in a home game and beat the hell out of them!!! in route to the Super Bowl.
And besides bashing for the sake of bashing gets pretty tired quickly. The Hawks are in a great cycle. Lets enjoy it while it lasts.
1. In 2007 he was the 2nd highest paid TE in the NFL at $4.7 million (behind Todd Heap) Thats way to steep for us if he's still looking for top dollar
2. With his knee problems in recent years, are we just getting another Marcus Pollard?
Crump has many ties in Seattle with Ruskell, Mora and Kerney, but as stated in an earlier post, it appears he's interested in being a Panther...
Draft may be our best bet for a TE, but if we can get Crump cheap and not a huge bloated contract, i'm all for it... maybe it can be an incentive performance based contract... This is early in talking though, there has been no word on him even considering Seattle.
He gone, snydro.
But, yeah, this Wahle/Crumpler week shows this blog is just not going to get that kind of attention.
Nothing against Frank and Beene, but I woulda felt better with Boling filling us in.
A day after Crumpler's cut and no Seattle medium (or Clayton) (and certainly not Kahn) has been able to tell us if they have even contacted Crumpler or his agent...and not even a word telling us they don't know if that has happened or not.
I've gotten far more info out of the Atlanta Journal Constitution than the Seattle anything.
They just don't understand us junkies need our fix or we get irritable.

The part I found most interesting was that teams who paid the very most for players--teams who had a player under contract who was receiving one of the top three salaries at his position--had losing records. And once quarterbacks were taken out of this equation, the overall records for these teams were even worse.
Makes one wonder if it would be worth breaking the bank for Trufant and giving him Nate Clements money. Didn't seem to do the Niners much good.
Radem
Here's what the top 10 paid CBs in the NFL did in 2007
Nate Clements age 28 earned $12.2mil, started 16 games, 92 tackles, 4ints
Chris McAlister age 30 earned $9.4mil, started 8 games, 19 tackles, 1int, finished in IR
Patrick Surtain age 31 earned $9.2mil, started 16 games, 58 tackles, 2ints
Quinten Jammer age 28 earned $8.5mil, started 14 games, 61 tackles, 1int
Asante Samuel age 27 earned $7.7mil, started 14 games, 44 tackles, 6ints
Now Trufant is 27 earned 2.8mil started 16, 85 tackles, 7 picks
In my opinion he outplayed all of the top 5 paid CBs in 2007... He's going to demand top dollar, if you look at what we're going to owe for our FA's Josh Brown is going to get $2m Locklear is about $4m and Hack is probably 3-4m.... If we truely want Trufant, its gonna break our bank. We can't keep them all...
Ive said it a thousand times, I'll say it again: Ruskell is a good GM, and we have him to thank for our Super Bowl appearance. Ruskell has done some great things, and he's made some pretty boneheaded mistakes. I have allready listed his shortcomings numerous times, as well as his strengths so no need to repeat.
I make damn sure to give credit where credit is due, and i put blame squarely where it belongs. Ruskell hogs a lot of the credit for our success, so he gets lots of the blame for our failures. Kinda like a qb...
I love Tru and dont want him to leave, but i dont think the Hawks can afford him. The question Ruskell has to answer is, can we afford to lose him? Same deal with hackett; it isnt so much if they are "worth" the price they command, but whether the hawks can adequately do without them.
Bobbyk--Ruskell drafts guy who can fill roles. You dont draft superstars all the time--no team could afford to keep a whole draft of superstars anyway, and most superstar NFL payers werent 1st rounders. The draft is kind of a crap shoot. Can you imagine the price a whole draft (7 guys) of Tatupu talent would command after 4 years? Tatupu is going to command $10 million a year plus after next season. Ruskell drafts the best player available that fits one of the Hawk needs, which is smart. Drafting well means that 4 years later most/all of your players are still in NFL. Ruskells draftees are almost all still in NFL, and many of them are starters. Also, we still have most of his picks, and we are a top-10 team, so this is proof of Ruskells draft acumen.
Ozzie Newsome should be fired for picking Ogden and Lewis in the same draft. That costs their organization too much money in the long run!
I know what you mean though... just giving you crap... I'm just saying you can't forget the guys who brought Matt and Walt to Seattle... they happen to be important players too and if Timmy didn't have them, his team he gets credit for wouldn't be as successful...
And there's no mention of Wahle and the importance of improving the weakest link on our team this past season? Or what Crumpler could do for our offense?
Seattle Seahawk Insider has no inside info. "Where there is no offseason" seems to become a joke of late to me. See ya TNT!
"This from the guy who keeps insisting, over and over despite it being false, that Steve Hutchinson didn't want to be here. I guess you subscribe to the theory that if you keep telling a lie long enough, people will believe it."
Hutchinson's actions tell us he didn't want to be here. He had the opportunity to bring back the deal the Vikings offered him, minus the poison pill of course, and the Hawks would have matched. Instead he and his agent along with the Vikings included poison pils to make it impossible for the Hawks to match. Yet the Hawks STILL TRIED TO MATCH only to lose in the courts. So those are the actions of a guy that wanted to play for the Hawks? I'd hate to see what lengths a player might go to who really didn't want to be in Seattle.
And don't give me the whole he left because the Hawks didn't franchise him nonsense. If you believe that then Steve Hutchinson will go down in history as the ONLY NFL player to be insulted by not being franchised. That BS doesn't fly!
First,I really like your phrase "as I understand it" to some how infer that you have inside knowledge which you do not; thus, you have no idea what really went on with Hutch, his agent, or Ruslkell. Let's get that straight. While I'll agree that Ruskell doesn't value guards the way he would a franchise LT, it is also true that Ruskell did not want to deal with the nonsense that went on for years with Jones so he basically said we'll use the transition tag so that you can go find out what the open market says you are worth, bring it back here, and we'll match. How is that disrespectful? Kris Dielman didn't feel disrespected when the Chargers didn't sign him right away and he came to visit Seattle. What Dielman do? He realized how much better it would be for him to stay in SD and he took less money to do so.
"Hutchinson was bound to be pissed off, and he took that giant offer from Minnesota and ran with it. And as an "in your face" to the guy who disrespected him (and the position he plays)"
Right! Hutch took the money and ran away from Seattle. If he truly wanted to be in Seattle, the Hawks would have let the Hawks match and he would have been paid what he was worth. Instead he took the money in Minny so he could play with Tarvaris Jackson. And how's that working out for ya Hutch!!
"You can spin it all you want, but that is what happened and Hutchinson isn't the first player to go elsewhere when he felt, well, a lot more than slighted."
Name me one other player (besides a K) that has publicly stated he wanted to be franchised(I won't hold my breath waiting).
Most players piss and moan because they can't find out what they're worth when they get franchised. Should the Hawks have held Hutch prisoner and franchised him? Sure. But then if he had held out of camp you would have blamed Ruskell for not transitioning him so he could find out what he is worth. Because we all know Hutch would have brought the deal back and let the Hawks match, right (sarcasm intended)!
But feel free to keep bashing the hawks at every turn! You show your real fan colors!!
Let's take this whole crowd there and give that site the traffic instead of this one.. There have been numerous blog entries, today alone! It even gave an update on Clayton's comments regarding the Hawks today on KJR, which I missed in real-time..

Prediction for early May Seahawks Insider... "Oh by the way, the draft was last weekend and the Seahawks selected..."
This team built itself up to win SBXL and failed us. It'll be another forty SB's before it even sniffs another chance. But hey, keep drinking the punch, ladies. I guess ignorance truly is bliss.
Hey hawks, can I hold you too that? So if the Seahawks make it back to the SB in the next ten years, I don't want to see you rooting for them and saying "I knew it or I told you so."
Just don't make stupid predictions or promises on here. It makes you look stupid and the 12th man stupid. You're sounding like this idiotic Panthers fan on this ESPN piece about Crumpler, http://myespn.go.com/blogs/hashmarks/0-5-422/Crumpler-Carolina-bound-.html?prosaction=newpost&status=ok .
The funny thing about alot of you is that half of you probably weren't even Hawks fans over 5 years ago and you don't know how good we have it now as compared to the Seahawks of old. I said it last year and I'll say it again, hold the critism until after the Draft.
What's amazing is that there isn't any news with the Seahawks at all, did Frank and others take some time off?
Man, I would feel a lot better if we had at least Tru and Lock resigned.
Someone give some kind of news....please.....
Sign Locklear, Brown and Trufant. If you can get a reasonable deal for Hackett, I would love to have him back. See if you can get a couple of players to "redo" their contracts to free up a little cash, and make a run at Jason Taylor. If Miami is getting rid of him, he sure would be a great asset opposite Kerney....with Tapp spelling them.
Now this is all assuming that the cap space is there. I don't know what it would take to sign Crumpler, but they definitely need to take care of TE and DT this year, whether it's through the draft or free agency.
It may be Trufant that is let go because of what his potential asking price might be.....that would suck, but if we could somehow afford the rest....then I think things might work out fine.
From Football Outsiders:
I know John Morgan likes to link to us and use FO stats a lot, and he shows up in the comment threads, but still, I was a little shocked at the number of votes for Field Gulls. With Mike Sando gone for ESPN.com, the Tacoma News-Tribune Seahawks Blog dropped from second in 2006 to a tie for tenth in 2007.
My favorite site over the last week, and will be my favorite forever if they keep up this kind of consistency, is Seahawks Addicts: www.seahawkaddicts.com
Prosportsdaily.com is also a great place to get updates every morning.
I checked out seahawkaddicts.com today, it seemed great.
"See" you all elsewhere. I'm out too.
Let him have some time off during this, the quietest part of the year. No reason for him to give us daily updates that there is in fact nothing to update. When there was news, it got posted. If nothing's getting posted, there is probably no news.
Although if this is going to get rid of the tweakers and brave men of anonymity, then take two months off, Frank.
Those are the same guys that will disappear come the next .500 season anyway.
Dropping some constructive criticism is a good thing, but many of the grumpy arent offering suggestions on how to make it better, just howling about how this blog stinks. The funny thing is, the loudest complainers are usually the ones who have yet to provide any meaningful analysis or opinion of thier own. If you're not adding something to this blog then by all means go somewhere else.
I've looked at all the other Hawk blogs, and some are ok, but many are pretty lacking. A few have been outperforming this blog recently with breaking stories, but one thing some seem to forget is that Frank is on vacation. The Trib probably should have lined up someone else to run the blog in his place, but they didnt--and that is not Franks fault.
If more of those who arent happy with the blog would post thier complaints in a less juvenile manner, the Trib folks would probably pay more heed. Ranting, raving, name-calling, and swearing arent good ways to get Management to pay attention to you.
One other thought: this is America, and we shouldnt all have to agree on things in order to get along. A few regular posters have been engaging in personal attacks on those whose opinions on Hawk-related information dont mesh with thier own. I dont understand this--its supposed to be fun to discuss and even argue about what decisions have been made that were/werent good, what the Hawks front office should/shouldnt do, which players are replaceable etc etc. But lately it hasnt been much fun, becuase as soon as one poster leaves an opinion/analysis that someone disagrees with, its personal attack time--its become like Feeding Time At The Zoo.
We are all Hawk fans, and since we're not all clones, our opinions and analysis are bound to be different. This shouldnt make us attack each other as if we were arguing with Raider fans.
How about we all feel free to post opinion/analysis/etc without getting verbally torn to shreds if someone disagrees with us? The posters can make this blog better just by changing thier language and having a little common courtesy. In my opinion, this problem is every bit as bad as the lack of stat analysis and updated rumors etc and is not Franks fault.
So how about it?
I'll still come back to this site now and then, but there is no denying that it is NOTHING like it was when Sando was running it.. Not even close.. Frank is not qualified, and if the News Tribune had any sense, they would hire someone new to cover the Seahawks beat..
John Clayton, Mike Sando.. The News Tribune has always been greater than the Times or the PI in their coverage of the Hawks.. until now..
His recent coverage of the Mariners has blown me away..
Literally no one leaves comments over there, but even so, Ryan Divish is a pit-bull with his blog updates and inside analysis..
Divish is the one who consistently produced the 'linkage' segments of the Seahawks Insider over the last season.. Granted, there is a lot more Mariners news going on right now than Seahawks news, but it doesn't matter. He is INVOLVED with the blog. He posts pictures, audio, breakdowns etc.. and he isn't even the regular beat-writer for the team!
TRIBUNE: MAKE DIVISH THE BEAT WRITER OF THE SEAHAWKS AND PUT THE NEWS TRIBUNE BACK ON THE PROVERBIAL MAP!
i'd vote no, though i do sometimes tend to do work... sigh.
If a press pass to the superbowl "net's" us a comparison of Mike Holgren and Ruskell to Phil Jackson and some basketball gm, what is the point? I would rather have good football info. and if it saves me scouring tons of internet sites so that it is all in one place that is great for me.
