Here are some of Tim Ruskell's thoughts on cornerback Marcus Trufant and where and why they have stalled in negotiations:
"Nothing has changed. We put the tag on him And we will continue to talk. It is a unique situation. I think it is more than the money. It is a philosophical difference. Who is in the elite class and where in the elite class is Marcus is what it boils down to. My philosophy has always been with corners, the guys who have gotten paid are the guys who are lockdown corners, who can take the other guy out of the game. Darrell Green, Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey, those are the guys who have gotten the big bucks over the last 25 years. We make our evaluation and valuations on our guys. You either see them in that category or you don’t. And that is a great category. And there is another category, the guys who can do everything well. They have the whole package. Some of your lockdown guys, great in the man to man but they can’t tackle. Deion. I think Marcus is the top of the very good that does everything well type of category. That is where our offer is. That puts him above a lot of good guys. You talk about McAlliser. You talk about Ronde Barber. You talk about Woodson. And Newman. And Bly. A lot of good players. If they were sitting there, they would say, ‘No, he is up there with the lockdown guys. That is what he is. Just ask our people we talk to in the league.’ We have to go by what we see. Our evaluation. It has done us well for the last 20 or 25 years and we have to go by that. It has just gotten crazy what has happened to that market. They are approaching quarterbacks. And I think if you go back and talk to those teams that have recently said if we can just bring in a lockdown corner that is going to make our defense fantastic, you know that didn’t happen. In many cases, it went the other way. In a lot of cases, if you bring in a guy like that, the other team goes, ‘Phew.’ Because if you bring in a lockdown corner, I can blitz. The offense is going to go, ‘Let’s go at him so they know they can’t do that.’ Those guys get picked on. That is where the philosophical impasse is with us and his representatives. Who will blink and go across the bridge? We are both pretty staunch in our views. Having said all that, we love Marcus. He is such a good player for our football team. He said during the year, when you all asked why are you having such a good year, who did he credit? Got to have the pass rush. Got to have those guys behind you. It is really a team concept deal. He is a great system guy. What is frustrating, we didn’t want to use the tag. Because it is such a big footprint in the cap. Having said all that, I still think we get it done. I do. I am optimistic that way. I think they are going to wait and see where does Asante Samuel come in. That is a tough one. I have talked about where does the corner rank in terms of value. Do you put the quarterback first and rushing defensive end. I think every team has that list a little different. And can a corner come into your team and change it. If you’re good can he make it great. If you are average can he make it good? When you talk about a quarterback, you say yes. He can take you from poor to average. You have to really pay attention to that when you view your valuations."

Seahawks | Team close to signing Crumpler
Fri, 29 Feb 2008 12:17:53 -0800
Darryl Ledbetter, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Seattle Seahawks are close to signing free-agent TE Alge Crumpler (Falcons), according to Crumpler's agent, James Williams. Williams said he hopes to have a deal completed over the weekend.
Can you tell us what your take on the Hackett situation is? I have heard so much about the hawks just not coming to terms with him.
do you feel that is a) due to how they value the young guys like Ben O and Courtney Taylor b) he cant stay healthy c) didnt think he was worth what he wanted?
i havent heard anyone talk about a) and if that has anything to do with it i would really like to know. since that might make me feel better about losing young talent.
I think the Hackett thing is a combination of the three things you mentioned. Yes, they are concerned about his health. Yes, they think he is asking for a lot, particularly for a guy who played only six games last year (really 4 1/2). And yes, they are deep enough at that position that I think they feel they can lose Hackett and either Obomanu, Taylor or Payne is good enough to replace him, particularly since COMBINED they don't make what Hackett made this year, and certainly not what he is likely to make next year.
A trade here makes a lot of sense. If we have to use Babineaux, Wilson and Jennings next year, fine. I love Tru; he's the only jersey I own, but the finances don't work.
I assume, Tru will be traded, and we'll sign Brian Kelly from Tampa for like 3 years, 10M. That's gonna happen...
I'd almost rather the Seahawks sign a second tier veteran for $3-4 mil a year and let Tru walk.
If Crumpler is signed, I won't say anything bad about "Timmay!" for a week.
Trufant better start thinking about dropping his number real quick! Nobody is going to pay him more than Samuel got.
If he signs for 6 years at 42 or 7 a year it is still a little high, but at least it's doable.
"It's gonna take a Coug to "Coug it" for the Seahawks."
Yeah, because that Husky we drafted in the 1st round panned out so well, like he did in the Super Bowl. That's just brilliant, I bet you stayed up all night thinking that one up "rolo". What insight and research.
Now, maybe Frank or someone can explain the wisdom of using the Franchise Tag on a player you go out and publicly insult him and claim is worthless and that you don't want to pay top dollar for after you've guaranteed him $9.5 million dollars for this season. Ruskell has a real talent for alienating players (Steve Hutchinson, Josh Brown, now Marcus Trufant) that he didn't draft. Apparently they are meaningless to him. So what is Timmay!s strategy here, presuming he has one. Is he going to let Trufant's agent talk to other teams and work a trade a la' the Packers and Cory Williams? Or is he just on another ego trip? I like the way he pretends he's been part of the organization forever ("It has done us well {terrific grammar and sentence structure there Timmay!} the last 20 or 25 years..."). And "having said all that" (insuluting him and his ability)"we love Marcus". Sure you do, you just told him you love his ability about as much as a case of painful rectal itch. I think Trufant is a, at best, slightly above average cornerback. I also think Asante Samuel is at best, a slightly above average cornerback who will flop (at least in terms of what they're paying for) in Philly. He, like Marquand Manuel was for Seattle, was much more vaulable to NE than anywhere else. But I don't fault these guys for seeking big bucks, that's the way the capitalist circus is played. But Ruskell has a real knack for disrespeting, insulting and driving away players with his actions (or lack thereof) and now his mouth. This guy is a tool.
