I caught up with St. Louis coach Scott Linehan to ask him if the two kicks that Josh Brown made in 2006 that beat the Rams was the primary reason that he went after Brown:

"Well, those are the two kicks I remember the most. If not for those two kicks we win the division. But the rest of them have been pretty important too. He is very accurate. More importantly is how he has performed over the course of his career. And being a field goal guy and being able to kickoff. That is a big weapon. That's big if you can have a kickoff guy put it back there and force a guy to take a knee or come out of the end zone is critical. Plus, for at least eight games he is going to be kicking indoors, so that has to be a weapon as well. It's a rare combination to have a great kickoff guy who also is a great field goal kicker."

[More:]

I know what you all are thinking. This seems to be a bit inaccurate on Linehan's part because one of the criticisms of Brown -- even by the Seahawks -- is that he does not put kickoffs deep, part of the reason that Olindo Mare was attractive. But I can only tell you what his response was to the question.

The only way JB can impact any game next year is if the Rams are within a few points of their opponent. Not much of a chance for that to happen.

I think the big question is if Josh will be able to find pants with Airconditioning. I am guessing he has plenty of room in there for the additional hardware. Sorry for the dig, but I did not care for his comments as he left town. By by baby!

Just goes to show you we should have ponied up the cash cuz it has obviously made him better at kick-offs... Oh wait, its only april

The Seahawks have won 6 straight against the Rams. 4 of those came down to the final minute/play.

The most important thing is to win, however to credit the kicker for winning the game takes alot away from the other players who contributed to getting us in a position to win. Thats what I love about this game. It is a team sport that looks it's best when played that way. That is one key to the Giants victory over the Pats in the superbowl. They played better at all positions and the summ of their effort overcame the "better players" in the skill positions on the Pats.

That Linehan thinks Brown is a touchback machine is a real day-brightener. On multiple levels. What a maroon.

Their defense has enough trouble without adding an extra 15-18 yards in opponent field position to the mix.

Hey everyone, remember that JB left to go to a winning team not because of the money! Wow, what a loss for us! :)

He is going to be the joke of the Seahawk nation this next year. Remember when Stevens and D-Jack came back last year? I don't remember them very much!

Who cares about Josh "I'm no slave to the businessman" brown he's a hated Ram now, and is dead to me.
m_b @ 13:16 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
Josh Brown made 82.4% of his field goals last year...that placed him BEHIND 25 other kickers in terms of 'accuracy'. Did Brown make some game winners? Yes. Did he miss a lot of field goals? Yes. I don't understand this notion that this guy is accurate. He is not, and will never be one of the most accurate kickers. Never in his career has he finished even in the top 10 in terms of accuracy.

I hate to say this, kids.. but y'all need to check your facts/figures. Brown wasn't the best in the NFL in kickoffs, but he was top 10.. Tied for 9th, actually..

Chuckle, I'm reading that as the number of touch-back WE took...its hard to tell because right next to it is return yds.
UT Hawk @ 14:30 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
m_b,

I've seen those numbers in other places, too. That's definitely the number of touchbacks taken by the opponent's receiving team.
m_b @ 14:34 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
You're right....that is interesting. Of course I was commenting on his field goal accuracy, not kickoffs.
Southendzone @ 16:38 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
I don't have any stats to rely on, but it seemed that JB's kickoff distance improved quite a bit last season over previous.

Hypothetical question: If there was a kicker who's leg was so strong he would kick 99% of all kickoffs out of the end zone. BUT he had no ability to kick FG's at all. And in this hypothetical he also could add no value in playing any other position on the field.

Would an NFL team use a roster spot on this player?
pabuwal @ 17:18 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
Yes, teams have kept Kickers as mere Kickoff Specialists for far lower percentages.
eyeland @ 18:18 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
Well Josh is no longer a slave to the business Man. Good luck with all that Josh and the Rams you are going to need it.
Go Hawks!
KHF @ 18:31 - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 Email
For some reason people don't want to believe this, but early in his career Josh kicked very few touchbacks because he was TOLD not to, not because he couldn't. Pete Rodriguez coached Brown to kick the ball high and short, his theory being that a high kick gives the coverage unit time to get to the ball before the return team can set up their blocking. In essence, he figured a high kick that was caught between the 5 and 10 yard line with little room for a return was better than a low, straight kick that was caught 5 yards deep in the end zone, but which the returner had lots of room to run out because the coverage unit hadn't gotten down there yet.

When Rodriguez left before the 2004 season, he was replaced by his protege Mark Michaels. I'm sure Michaels taught the same philosophy.

In 2005 Bob Casullo took over. In 2006 and 2007, Brown's touchbacks took off. I don't know why Casullo didn't change things in 2005, but I'm pretty sure that Brown has always been capable of fairly consistent touchbacks. How can a guy who kicks a 58 yard field goal in Lambeau field NOT be capable of kicking touchbacks?

Brown's touchback numbers by year:

2003: 3
2004: 5
2005: 4
2006: 12
2007: 13

Obviously, the system failed Brown more than he failed the system:
1) Touchbacks KHF said it all - nothing more to add.
2) It has been widely reported that Brown's "problems" regarding accuracy were the team's and not his - long snapper.

Brown is the same guy who kept the Hawks alive and in the playoffs in seasons past. He will be making this same contribution (or larger given it will be indoors) for the Rams. Don't forget this is the guy we franchised a season ago. Get over it Brown was and will be far superior to OM and it is very likely that he will account for two of the Rams wins next year and his absence will account for two of the Hawks losses.
