KJR's Dave Mahler is reporting that a family member of Shaun Alexander told him that Alexander is going to be cut today.

Here is what I know. Shaun had a physical today. The Seahawks have not been given the results of his physical. So nothing has been done -- yet. This is not to say that Softy is wrong, it is only to say that the Seahawks have not officially made any moves.

I have been in court all morning dealing with the Rocky Bernard situation. I will post that in a few minutes.

I does not make any sense to keep him yet I love what he has ment to the team so this is sad and hard. But if they are going to cut Shawn, then it is best for him and the team for this to happen sooner than later. I think the only thing that has drug it out has been the hurt player status.

With respect and affection, good luck SA!
airbags @ 12:21 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email

true, JoeHawk.

good luck shaun... unless you play against us.

JoshDinAustin @ 12:29 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Good luck SA I wish you the best!
we want the ball and we're gonna score @ 12:31 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Sadly, dropping shaun off the field is about as predictable as watching him drop on the field...

HawkSince76 @ 12:48 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Shaun is arguably the best tail back the Hawks have ever had! He will be missed....but it had to be done!
firejimmoradotcom @ 12:48 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
This would be the "clear the decks" strategy commonly used in business today.

Get all the bad news out at one time, and move forward with a clean slate. Actually the timing is pretty good. On Saturday, everyone will have forgotten the events of the week (SA cut, Jumpsuit Rocky, etc)and will be salivating over the next new RB/DL/etc.

Now if they just cut ties with Warren Moon, the team would be moving in the right direction.
JazBadAzz @ 12:57 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
we should keep Shawn because J.J and T.J don't always stay healthy either!
airbags @ 13:51 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email

jaz - i read an article on si.com about how jujo tried too hard to run like barber instead of being the quick-footed slash-back he is. that may have something to do with it.

airbags @ 13:53 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email

granted, i read that months ago, so, i'm hard-pressed to find it now...

lame on my part.

Scottlianematt @ 14:02 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Its about time. Should have let him go after 2005 instead of Hutch

I for one will miss Shaun greatly. By far the best back the Hawks have ever had, and in my opinion at least, the second best Hawk, behind only Steve.
LAHawk @ 14:36 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
I can name several hawks who would rank above SA. Curt Warner, Kenny Easley, Jacob Green, Walter Jones, Cortez Kennedy...should I go on?
hawkdawg @ 14:39 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
As a sheer football player, Kenny Easley was the most dominant Hawk I have ever seen on the football field. Then Walter. Then Largent.

But Walter and Largent were able to do it for much longer.

My favorite single-season running back was Warner in his rookie year. Overall running back, Alexander.
PaulieP @ 14:42 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Walter Jones, I can see putting above Shaun, but that's it. No one else had the impact that Shaun did. Easley was great too, but not to Shaun's level.
hawksnutt22 @ 14:52 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Shaun Alexander has been released by the Seahawks. 04/22/08 @ 2:50 pm.
Dukeshire @ 14:53 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Alexander, in my opinion, never a larger impact than Largent. If you want to talk single season, I would listen to the argument that Cortezs' '92 season rivals Shaun's '05. NFL defensive player of the year on a 2-14 team.
Dukeshire @ 14:55 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Hawknut, where'd you get that info?
hawksnutt22 @ 14:58 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
I am a freelance sports journalist and have my connections.

Sorry Duke, I meant out of the list that was provided. Largent is the #1 Seahawk, for so many reasons. But Shaun is #2 or #3.
STTBM @ 15:02 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
um, does that include your butt hawksnutt22?! Is that one of your "connections"?

Just kidding man, I thought your post was funny.

Seriously, Shaun was a great back, but he isnt worth taking a 4-8 million $ a season gamble that he can get back to Pro Bowl form. At least not for Ruskell...good luck, man: I hope one of the teams interested in J-Stew picks you up...so we can get him!
hawksnutt22 @ 15:06 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Wow STTBM that was a great post! Very original and mature. You should really do this full time.
Dukeshire @ 15:10 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
NFL.com is reporting that Shaun has been released. Come on Frank, let's go! Adam Schefter should never beat you to a scoop on your own team.
pdway @ 15:16 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Shaun definitely the best RB in team history; most valuable seahawks, I probably put him top-5; somewhere in the mix with Easley, Cortez, Largent and Hasselbeck. Curt Warner was electric, but just didn't play long enough. Chris Warren and Jacob Green are just behind those guys. Lofa will be there soon if he keeps playing.
Dukeshire @ 15:18 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
I think I blacked out just after reading Waren's name. You can't be serious. Give me Sherman Smith or Dan Dornick at least, dear god.

STTBM @ 15:40 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Hawksnutt--I didnt mean it the way you took it. As Alexander WASNT released at 2:50, your "sources" were wrong...If you really are a free-lance journalist, you probably want to get some better sources.

Anyway, I am sorry, I meant no disrespect. I will be more careful with my feeble attempts at humor.
JosefK @ 15:41 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Guys, this is a mistake. I think they meant Rocky Bernard. I hope so.

Frankly, the cell phone photo should seal the deal here.

Man, I'm torqued - the guy who gets fired (okay, released) is the guy who got hurt playing hard and willingly taking on community & team leadership responsibilities, while this lo-ser Rocky gets his picture taken on a cell phone in an orange jumpsuit. Gee, can Rocky the Thug play for say, the 49ers or the Cowboys or the Cardinals so we can make this lo-ser lose some more?!?

I'm just mad and hope you are. Let's keep #37 around for 29 more years!!!
hawksnutt22 @ 15:46 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
Actually, after speaking with Adam Schefter, he was released at 2:50 today. In the journalism industry things tend to move slow and just because one source says no, the other may say yes. And according to MY SOURCE, the Seahawks had released him with the result of his physical. I am not trying to disrespect you but I am simply stating information from my available resource.

"I can name several hawks who would rank above SA. Curt Warner, Kenny Easley, Jacob Green, Walter Jones, Cortez Kennedy...should I go on?"

No, you've already proven you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

SA is by far the best back this team has ever had. I had issues with running style like everyone else, but not his production when he had a decent line. Cutting him is sensless, because we don't save anything on the cap this year. Why not keep him and let come to training camp? That's obviously what Holmgren wanted.

But I guess that doesn't count for anything in "Timmay's!" little tin-plated empire.
STTBM @ 15:59 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
hawksnutt--well, I am man enough to admit I dont know jack-all about journalism. Looks like you were right.

osiris--I was all for keeping SA another year as well, especially since Bernards metamorphosis into a Turd will force the Hawks to draft a DT in the slot they might have snagged a good rb.

I hope SA goes to the Titans and kicks the Cowgirls ass! Heres to a couple more Pro Bowl seasons (I can hope!) for mister Alexander!
grizindabox24 @ 16:00 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Osiris, if they take the entire hit this season the Hawks save nothing against the cap, but they clear the space for next season. If the Hawks keep SA, they will still be on the hook for his salary next season. Hence the Hawks do not save cap this year but they will next year, this is why SA is gone now.
grizzly1969 @ 16:17 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
SA is 571 yards away from being THE 5TH RB IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME to have 10,000 yds rushing and 100 TD's rushing. Too bad it won't happen here.

He's a 1st ballot hall of famer.

Good luck SA.
grizindabox24 @ 16:18 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Let me rephrase. If the Hawks keep SA this year, they will have a cap hit of his salary plus portion of bonuses alrady paid. They will still have a cap hit next year on his remaining bonus no matter what they do with him at seasons end. By releasing him now and taking the full hit, they would not realize any cap savings becasue the remaining bonus would be similar to his bonus portion plus salary for this year, but it would free up any hit for the following season. So it will save cap space over the next two years to release him now as opposed to after the season.
pdway @ 17:04 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
"I think I blacked out just after reading Waren's name. You can't be serious. Give me Sherman Smith or Dan Dornick at least, dear god."

Pretty good career for Warren; three pro bowls, four 1000+ yds rushing years; don't think Smith or Doornink are too close to his numbers. Why the hate for the guy?

Osiris33 @ 17:12 - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 Email
http://seahawkboys.blogspot.com/
As I said, they don't save any cap room "this year." so why not let him come to camp and see if he has anything left? If they cut him at the end of traning camp, they are not on the hook for his salary and they can still take the charge this year, and save on next year's cap.

The Best Seahawk Running Backs of All Time

1) Shaun Alexander (HOF)
2) Chris Warren
3) Ricky Watters
4) Curt Warner
5) John L. Williams
