Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce and former running back Eddie George were on The Best Damn Sports Show, Period. They were not kind to Shaun Alexander:
Antonio Pierce (about Alexander): “He’s soft. You will hurt yourself as a defender trying to tackle him. You ain’t gonna hit him because he’s going to fall down before you get there….The guy runs hard. I have a lot of respect for how he runs the ball. But when it comes down to the toughness of the game, the physicalness of the game, he doesn’t want no part of it.”
Eddie George (about Shaun Alexander) “Losing (guard) Steve Hutchinson exposed him for the runner he is. And he’s not an aggressive running back to begin with. When Steve was there, the holes were bigger than this room. My grandmother could have run and got those yards. Now when it calls for him to get the hard two and three-yard runs, he’s not accustomed to doing that.”
COMMENTS:
This "Shaun" blasting that is going on is ridiculous. It is the equivalent of you telling someone that your infant child learned a new word and then that person tells you that your child is a flippin moron.
Look at yourselves in the mirror, do a quick evaluation, punch yourselves in the balls, and shut the **** up.
BE A TRUE HAWKS FAN
I don't think Pierce or George were at all inaccurate in their remarks. I completely agree that the decimated O-line exposed Alexander for the runningback he really is.
Jim Zorn said it best a week or so after being named head coach of the Redskins. As he was complementing C. Portis, it was also clear he was referencing the most recent RB he had worked with in his offense as he noted how great it is that Portis can stay in for all four downs because he can pass block, catch the ball out of the backfield and convert short yardage situations.
Also, I think you have to give Eddie George some expert status when it comes to toughness running the ball, b/c he was one of the toughest. I loved watching one game toward the end of his career when he had dislocated his shoulder either the week before or earlier in the game and used that same arm to stiff-arm Ray Lewis (quite effectively too) to pick up three yards and convert a third down.
I agree we needed to move Alexander, I just dont think we need to rip him apart. I have a feeling the people who do that will become cowboy fans the second we dont win our division. Shame on them if they do.
PS: Shaun and his 2005 teamates ran us into the superbowl, just in case people forgot...
say what you want about the past two years, but shaun ran harder than anybody in the red zone. i highly doubt eddie george would have scored 112 touchdowns running behind steve hutchison or not.
I'm not a 37 apologist but you have to take a step back and look at the situation...
Would the Seahawks have won 13 straight and made it to the SB w/out 37? Would they have made it w/out Hutch? Would they have made it w/out Marquand Manuel? The answer to all 3 is NO. 37 helped Hutch as much as Hutch helped 37 and fans with true football knowledge know this.
I'm glad 37 is gone only because it's what's best for the Hawks present and future, but don't kid yourself into thinking that he was garbage. He is one of the top 5 players in FRANCHISE HISTORY and we will all be looking at 37 in the Ring of Honor next to 17, 12, 80, 45, 78, 25, and someday 71, 8, and 38.
Best of luck to you Shaun, you thrilled us for 8 years. Your Minnesota game in 2002 was one of my top 5 in person sports moments of all time and I appreciate all you did for the Hawks.
Good grief...I don't have a problem if someone wants to call Shaun "soft". I'd rather have a "soft" RB with his numbers than a "tough" guy that that doesn't produce.
When the decision was announced by the Hawks that they were releasing SA, TR lauded him and referred to looking forward to the day when Shaun was in the Ring of Honor, even hoping that he (TR) would still be with the Seahawks when that day came. Maybe it was all BS...but it's still what was said.
But more than that, Shaun's prepared statement to the press was nothing but gracious and appreciative to the organization, the fans, and the city.
Why can't we show him the same respect and grace as he did? He's done some things that some people would consider to be an embarassment to himself...but he never did anything that brought disrespect to the team or the city. He wasn't Ken Hamlin (on and off the field), or Jeremy Stevens, or Koren Robinson, or even Rocky Bernard (not to mention Sean Locklear and even Bryce Fisher). He didn't flip the rod at management by allowing his agent to negotiate a poison pill clause.
Just say "thanks" and let him go...I'm sorry. I just don't understand the purpose or the need for the posting of this...much less the credibility of those who have made the statements.
I'm sure I'll get some responses to this...
If he was playing for a team on the East coast, the comments would be more about being a first ballot Hall of Fame'r.
Dont jump on Frank, he is only the messenger here. I like knowing what is being said around the leauge even when it is full of holes.
Does that mean he wants a small part of some of it? Or maybe no part of all of it, but some part of something else? Or a part of him wants something, but none of this? A big part of Shaun wants a little part of it, but not no part of it?
How did this guy get a gig on TV?
I'm done talking to clueless dinks about this...go light another candle for your diva. Hell, Frank posted this just to try and educate some of u clueless wonders about football....a wasted effort.
I love Curt Warner as a player, and he had great escapability, but his career was far too short to judge how he would have compared to Shaun over a comparable period of time, and Shaun had great vision, while Warner didn't have great vision, but great moves to escape runners in the backfield. They were different types of players, both great in their own ways.
without ranting about all the things that drive me crazy about 37, i will simply say that his "style" has always bothered me and he's pretty much the opposite, in regards to almost everything i love about football.
go hawks!
