There is a story in the New York Daily News this morning that says the Seahawks, Saints and possibly the Falcons have expressed an interest in trading for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, who missed the Super Bowl and the latter portions of the season with a broken leg.
UPDATE: 9:32 AM -- I am told there is not any legitimacy to the rumor.
COMMENTS:
Also, I just saw that Anquan Boldin has requested a trade (on NFL.com). I really don't think there's a better RAC WR out there. I think Ruskell should pursue Boldin very aggressively. That would put Boldin, Burleson and Engram on the field in week 1, no matter what happens with Deion's injury. I mean, that'd be awesome.
2008: $1.925 million (+ $2.4 million reporting bonus)
2009: $3.025 million
2010: $3.825 million
2011: $4,508,332
I like the fervor that Shockey plays with, he busts his butt, plays hurt and creates major match up issues, look what he has done to Roy Williams. 3-4 years ago Williams was the best safety in history, no his lack of coverage ability can be directly related to Shockey eating his lunch everytime they play.
We will find a very good rookie TE in the 2-3 round.
Having said that he's a high risk so unless they're willing to take a 3rd round pick for him, I wouldn't go for it. ONLY Because we need DT and OT with the first day picks.
For some reason I don't see a Dustin Keller or Fred Davis ever matching Shockey's proven ability.
And in regards to being a locker room problem... the guy was being used as a blocker on every single down for the Giants last year. If I was unable to show my god given abilities in a sport I die for, I'd be pissed too. I had him on my freaking fantasy team and was pissed!
A change of scenery and a good offense that can really utilize a great TE can do wonders for an individuals "locker room problems".
How can you not like a guy that fights and bangs for yards with no helmet?
However, I would just like it if he could get someone who shows some fire on the field and gets mad when we lose (not that the others don't care, but you can hardly tell it sometimes). I'm so sick of how Shaun used to be so happy and smiling all the time after a tough loss and it's the same way still with some guys; JP comes to mind. That guy always looks happy after a loss while most of us fans are pissed off. Shockey may not be a choir boy, but at least he has a fire in his gut.
If he wouldn't change things like training in Miami - then I'd say leave him alone... but if he were willing to come here and Mike/Matt could tone him down to a certain level, this would be a great aquisition. Besides, how many new guys come in and act like jerks their first year in a new place. I know he's not a TO, but even TO took a year in Philly to show his true colors.
If you guys don't like Shockey's persona than how in the world can you like Jim Mora jr, they are cut from the same cloth of intensity.
The Vikings, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, surrendered their first-round pick in the 2008 draft and both third-round selections for Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen.
well, true, he hasn't played a full season in his career:
2002 15
2003 9
2004 15
2005 15
2006 15
2007 14
at the same time, here's how many touchdowns he's had per season:
2002 2
2003 2
2004 6
2005 7
2006 7
2007 3
six to seven touchdowns per season ain't bad at all. of course, if he was blocking all 2007, that would explain the lack of touchdown production.
clare over at "another newspaper" made a point that the word "serious" was used when the hawks said they had "no serious interest".
besides - what GM tells the truth during draft week?
i think adding shockey would be great, and drafting a young kid and giving the kid time to learn under a vet would be better.
Round 1/2 DT/OT whatever. Really, we need a solid DT and an successor OT more than we need a rnd. 2 TE. We have Putzier and he will help us. Get a 3rd round TE and maybe a 6th or FA. Rnd. 4 BPA or DE/OG(C)/S/LB. Rnd 7 PK/WR/LB. FA signings for WR, LB, DE, TE, C, S, P.
Is it draft weekend yet? Stiffle the BS pre-draft talk and concentrate on a superior draft. Shockey not in Seattle, no way.
GO SEAHAWKS
Yeah, because what team needs a tight end who can run, block and catch? Certainly not the Seahawks.
"Comment by hawkdawg @ 18:08 - Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 Frank's addendum pretty much squelches this, no?"
Yeah, because NFL teams always tell the truth in the week leading up to the draft...
Of course a TE should block on some plays, run routes on some plays, etc. Anyone that has ever seen a football game would know this.
Think if San Diego told Gates he'd be a blocker for the rest of the season. First off they would miss out on an average of 10 TD's a season and have a pissed of player in the locker room. Coughlin didn't utilize Shockey's abilities in his offensive scheme and it pissed him off.
area51hawkfan... fill me in on what team wants a "blocking first" TE. And I don't know if you know anything about the WR position, saying he should have changed positions in "colledge" to WR. Here's something for you to chew on... Basically a 6'5" 260 pound guy usually doesn't scream WR to football teams.
There's a thing called a receiving TE and that's exactly what Shockey is while he still has the ability to be a good blocker. Ever heard of a guy named Dallas Clark? How about the Colts offense? Where do you see your "blocking first" TE in that scheme?
Anyways... Seahawks have said they have no interest in Shockey anyways so the point is moot.
And I don't care how big he is if he doesn't like to block then I guess the only way he'll ever win another super bowl is by watching it from the side line (oh, like this year) only to have his team have a guy that keeps his mouth shut, does his job well enough to "help" his team win the super bowl.
Good for Clark & Gates those offenses work for them, in all the years the "West Coast" offense has been around the TE is a additional weapon, not the key weapon, so blocking is his first line of duty. Examples: Dwight Clark from SF, Shannon Sharpe DEN, and from of all teams there is the Holmgren lead Packers who had Keith Jackson, last time I checked they were all great TE's who contributed to the team. Anyways... like you said there is nothing to the rumor, it's been great to argue with you, lol.
