There is a story in the New York Daily News this morning that says the Seahawks, Saints and possibly the Falcons have expressed an interest in trading for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, who missed the Super Bowl and the latter portions of the season with a broken leg. UPDATE: 9:32 AM -- I am told there is not any legitimacy to the rumor.

I am not thrilled about Shockey....
Also, I just saw that Anquan Boldin has requested a trade (on NFL.com). I really don't think there's a better RAC WR out there. I think Ruskell should pursue Boldin very aggressively. That would put Boldin, Burleson and Engram on the field in week 1, no matter what happens with Deion's injury. I mean, that'd be awesome.
I would love to see Shockey here. I wouldn't be angry at all to see our 2nd rounder and a 3rd next year go to the G-men for him. What a bargain for a perennial probowl TE that was a Top 15 pick 5 years ago. He easily has 5-6 years of good football left in him. He is signed through 2011 and here is the contract details acquired from Rotoworld- Those contract #'s are cheaper than the franchise tag $$$ used on LJ Smith-
2008: $1.925 million (+ $2.4 million reporting bonus) 2009: $3.025 million 2010: $3.825 million 2011: $4,508,332
BTW, how much of the locker drama is a productive of the NY media being all over these guys? It seems that anything that the high profile athletes in that city do is newsworthy, Shockey angry...Giants throttled by Seahawks 42-30. Now, alot of fans in Seattle vilified Alexander for the stabbed in the back comment (he apologized the next day) but yet freak out when the man smiles during the game or during post game interviews when the Hawks lose? You are screwed either way, you don't say something, you are apathetic collecting a paycheck. You get angry, you are not a team player and a disruption in the lockerroom.
I like the fervor that Shockey plays with, he busts his butt, plays hurt and creates major match up issues, look what he has done to Roy Williams. 3-4 years ago Williams was the best safety in history, no his lack of coverage ability can be directly related to Shockey eating his lunch everytime they play.
J Shockey is a very good TE. But he does not fit into the Seahawks team approach. He is like DJack was, more into himself than the team. Plus the cost to aquire him would be more than we should cover. We need more picks not less picks.
We will find a very good rookie TE in the 2-3 round.
Man, I'm tempted. He may be the only TE in the league that can do both passing catching with speed and blocking. Gates is not much of a blocker, so don't even argue there.
Having said that he's a high risk so unless they're willing to take a 3rd round pick for him, I wouldn't go for it. ONLY Because we need DT and OT with the first day picks.
As I mentioned in the previous thread, the Saints offered a 2nd round draft pick for Shockey and the Giants rejected it. Either they want multiple picks (which the Seahawks don't have the luxury of giving) or they want a 1st rounder. Either way the price would be too high even if the rumor were true.
I say NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! He is a headache waiting to happen, he does not like to block "all the time" for the Super Bowl winning Giants and complains when he doesn't get the ball like T.O. & Ocho Stinko. The kind of tight end the Hawks need is a guy like the Giants TE Boss whomever they get to play the position. It would be a shame to waste any draft picks for a injury riddled and bitchy tight end. Use the dang draft Ruskell!!
Shockey would be HUGE for us. Imagine having the ability to stretch the field at the TE position. In case no one's heard... we don't exactly have weapons at the receiver position. Shockey can block, run with speed, and has one of the best set of hands on a TE. He plays with tenacity and ferociousness.
For some reason I don't see a Dustin Keller or Fred Davis ever matching Shockey's proven ability. And in regards to being a locker room problem... the guy was being used as a blocker on every single down for the Giants last year. If I was unable to show my god given abilities in a sport I die for, I'd be pissed too. I had him on my freaking fantasy team and was pissed! A change of scenery and a good offense that can really utilize a great TE can do wonders for an individuals "locker room problems". How can you not like a guy that fights and bangs for yards with no helmet?
I know he has baggage... and I'm glad Ruskell normally is a character first type of guy...
However, I would just like it if he could get someone who shows some fire on the field and gets mad when we lose (not that the others don't care, but you can hardly tell it sometimes). I'm so sick of how Shaun used to be so happy and smiling all the time after a tough loss and it's the same way still with some guys; JP comes to mind. That guy always looks happy after a loss while most of us fans are pissed off. Shockey may not be a choir boy, but at least he has a fire in his gut. If he wouldn't change things like training in Miami - then I'd say leave him alone... but if he were willing to come here and Mike/Matt could tone him down to a certain level, this would be a great aquisition. Besides, how many new guys come in and act like jerks their first year in a new place. I know he's not a TO, but even TO took a year in Philly to show his true colors.
Shockey is a beast when healthy! Everyone one of you guys will pick him up as the first TE of your fantasy draft if he and Matt team up. We would be able to nuetralize the opponets pass rush with the threat that Shockey brings. I bet your life that Matt would absolutely love this move.
If you guys don't like Shockey's persona than how in the world can you like Jim Mora jr, they are cut from the same cloth of intensity.
Shockey is a talant, no doubt, but what happens if he doesn't get the ball? Will he be happy blocking? Will he be happy being a PART of something great? He hasn't shown that yet so I would have to doubt it. I think there are better options out there that would be much less expensive. The biggest gamble would be what takes place in the locker room. He has been one of the biggest stories in New York week in and week out which draws national media attention. The 'Hawks didn't even get a Monday Night game this year. He doesn't fit for the 'Hawks and the 'Hawks don't fit him. Ain't gonna happen unless he gets a bunch of money that the 'Hawks can't afford to part with.
What we should be talking about is trading Kerney...have you seen the value that Allen got for the Chiefs(see below)? Or that Miami wants a low-to-mid first round pick for Taylor? Heck, let's trade Kerney for a top 5 pick and get McFadden.
The Vikings, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, surrendered their first-round pick in the 2008 draft and both third-round selections for Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen. well, true, he hasn't played a full season in his career: 2002 15 2003 9 2004 15 2005 15 2006 15 2007 14 at the same time, here's how many touchdowns he's had per season: 2002 2 2003 2 2004 6 2005 7 2006 7 2007 3 six to seven touchdowns per season ain't bad at all. of course, if he was blocking all 2007, that would explain the lack of touchdown production. clare over at "another newspaper" made a point that the word "serious" was used when the hawks said they had "no serious interest". besides - what GM tells the truth during draft week? i think adding shockey would be great, and drafting a young kid and giving the kid time to learn under a vet would be better.
this ones for CeaYoung. I don't know if you know what the TE position is all about, but here is something for you to chew on while siding with the cry baby's missing out on his god given talents by just being used as a blocker last year. Soooooooooo What!! If he anted to be a reciever only then he should have changed postions in colledge and made the move to the wide out position. He makes millions of dollars to block, then catch it's part of the TE postion he's signed his contract to be paid and play the position that the coach... not the player sees best fit for the team. Shockey can go to Dallas or Oakland for all I care guys.
Use the Draft for TE. Forget Shockey. He is too full of himself. He has had some good years and I too like his fire but I can't stomach his whining. Get one, or maybe two (round 3 and round 6), young TE's and let them learn the Hawks way and contribute this year and many more.
Round 1/2 DT/OT whatever. Really, we need a solid DT and an successor OT more than we need a rnd. 2 TE. We have Putzier and he will help us. Get a 3rd round TE and maybe a 6th or FA. Rnd. 4 BPA or DE/OG(C)/S/LB. Rnd 7 PK/WR/LB. FA signings for WR, LB, DE, TE, C, S, P. Is it draft weekend yet? Stiffle the BS pre-draft talk and concentrate on a superior draft. Shockey not in Seattle, no way. GO SEAHAWKS
"Comment by blocis @ 09:12 - Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 Ugh. Yes, please no Shockey here."
Yeah, because what team needs a tight end who can run, block and catch? Certainly not the Seahawks. "Comment by hawkdawg @ 18:08 - Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 Frank's addendum pretty much squelches this, no?" Yeah, because NFL teams always tell the truth in the week leading up to the draft...
area51hawkfan... I never said that the TE position is all about catching passes. I was just making the point that when a team has an obvious weapon that demoralizes safeties around the league, and all you want to use him for is blocking, then I can understand the frustration that player would feel.
Of course a TE should block on some plays, run routes on some plays, etc. Anyone that has ever seen a football game would know this. Think if San Diego told Gates he'd be a blocker for the rest of the season. First off they would miss out on an average of 10 TD's a season and have a pissed of player in the locker room. Coughlin didn't utilize Shockey's abilities in his offensive scheme and it pissed him off. area51hawkfan... fill me in on what team wants a "blocking first" TE. And I don't know if you know anything about the WR position, saying he should have changed positions in "colledge" to WR. Here's something for you to chew on... Basically a 6'5" 260 pound guy usually doesn't scream WR to football teams. There's a thing called a receiving TE and that's exactly what Shockey is while he still has the ability to be a good blocker. Ever heard of a guy named Dallas Clark? How about the Colts offense? Where do you see your "blocking first" TE in that scheme? Anyways... Seahawks have said they have no interest in Shockey anyways so the point is moot.
CeaYoung.. Have you watched a Seahawk game? TE's in this offense have blocking assignments that come before being a receiving TE.
And I don't care how big he is if he doesn't like to block then I guess the only way he'll ever win another super bowl is by watching it from the side line (oh, like this year) only to have his team have a guy that keeps his mouth shut, does his job well enough to "help" his team win the super bowl. Good for Clark & Gates those offenses work for them, in all the years the "West Coast" offense has been around the TE is a additional weapon, not the key weapon, so blocking is his first line of duty. Examples: Dwight Clark from SF, Shannon Sharpe DEN, and from of all teams there is the Holmgren lead Packers who had Keith Jackson, last time I checked they were all great TE's who contributed to the team. Anyways... like you said there is nothing to the rumor, it's been great to argue with you, lol.
Here's the deal people, the seahawks have never had a complete team - go ahead and say they have and you might as well just stick your head back up your #@$ - and by that comment I mean defense and offense. Now seattle finally has a defense that is all that and we are missing a few key positions on offense now - TIGHT END. We need a quality tight end that is proven in the NFL. Who gives a @*&# if he has some attitude. 90% of NFL athletes think there some type of god or sex model, even the ones that are 6'0, 330 and fat as can be. My point is, Seattle needs to take the risk on Shockey and do like some of you say and worry more about other positions in the draft like receiver, running back, d-line. I know, you can sit there all you want and say "what the heck is he talking about" but I guess I must have been watching some other seahawks team for the past 24 yrs. I love them, but they are not always smart in there draft moves. Ya, the last 3 yrs. Please comment, I would like to know what a true fan thinks, not just people on the band wagon, hince the year Feb 06.
