Seahawks Insider

Rob says he has a strong feeling that the Seahawks are going after Kentwan Balmer, in large part because Rocky Bernard was arrested earlier this week. Bernard also is in the last year of his contract, so even if this case is never tried there is a chance that Rocky is not back next season.

The one issue I have with the choice of Balmer is Ruston Webster's comments today regarding taking one-hit wonders, which Balmer would qualify as: “That is always something from a scouting point of view is good to look at. The guys that are four-year starters, especially at the big schools, that means something. You do have to be a little careful of players that are one-year guys because you don’t know the circumstances that totally surround that year and they are less proven so that does come into play with us. I have always personally been partial to four-year starters.”

[More:]

Ruskell added this on the topic: “We have a grade in our grading scale that is called 6.0. What the grade says is that this is a talented guy. He has the level of talent to play in the National Football League at a high level but he has not produced on a consistent basis for whatever reason. Even though they will be ranked from 1-10, they will be at the 6 which is first-round capability, we tend not to take those guys where they are ranked because they are hit or miss prospects. Philosophically over there years we have said, ‘Don’t even look at those guys until the third round.’ Some teams don’t feel that way and those guys go, but we weren’t going to take the risks until the third round and that is how we compensate for that.”

That being said, the two guys on the board after Balmer are Calais Campbell and Lawrence Jackson, though neither are defensive tackles. Not to say the Seahawks won't look there, but with the Rocky and Tubbs situations the defensive tackle makes more sense.
