Defensive coordinator John Marshall met with us for about 25 minutes and was great, discussing most aspects of the defense.

When he was asked about what he likes about Red Bryant, he said, "He's country. And I love country."

Marshall very obviously is a big fan of Bryant. He said he just loves sitting down and talking to the guy. He called him "unique." Marshall said he thinks Bryant is at about the same place development-wise that Brandon Mebane was at this point, but he thinks that once they go through training camp and the preseason, he will be ready to contribute. He said he thinks that Mebane and Bryant can play together, or he can sub in for him and complement Rocky Bernard and Craig Terrill.

Marshall said Marcus Tubbs is still "a ways off" in his recovery from knee surgery. He said they will not really know anything until Tubbs gets out on the field and starts pushing off against live bodies. Marshall said he rehabbing diligently and doing everything he needs to do to come back, but there is no way of knowing at this point if he was successful.

[More:]

Marshall also really likes Lawrence Jackson. He said the one thing that really impresses him is that when you evaluate five or six different tapes, Jackson is the same player on all the tapes. He has a very high football IQ. Marshall said one of the things he likes to do when he interviews guy is ask them to draw up schemes. He said a guy like Jackson will draw the entire defense and know what everybody is doing -- while Bryant (as is the case with most defensive tackles) -- will draw the ends, the tackles and then have no idea what is going on behind them. It sounds like Jackson is going to play the right side and compete with Tapp for a starting spot. Marshall said he thinks Baraka Atkins still has some developing to do but he thinks Atkins is poised to make a big jump this season. Interestingly, Marshall never once mentioned Jason Babin's name.

Marshall said that D.D. Lewis is going to be the guy to play the role of Kevin Bentley, a versatile linebacker who can sub in at different spots. He said that all the backups are young and inexperienced and they need to develop quickly for the defense to be successful. He said Lance Laury is the buck linebacker.

He said he thinks Kelly Jennings also is ready to make a big jump because of the experience he got last year playing against bigger receivers. He said he loves the work ethic and diligence of Jennings, who is always paying attention even when people are not speaking to him.

If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll see if I can answer them.

no doubt, jennings was a solid right-sider last year. every game we watched, at least two positive comments about kelly jennings came out of my parties.

Great info Frank! But what do you mean by "buck linebacker?" The youngest one?
hawkdawg @ 16:57 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
Frank, did Marshall differentiate between the microfracture knee and the acl knee? Because almost everybody eventualy recovers from acl surgery these days--it's a matter of time. But microfracture is a different story. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.
Frank Hughes @ 16:59 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
The buck linebacker is the one who lines up on the strong side.

Marshall did not differentiate. I think at this point they are concerned with his overall ability to play football. Again, I don't think they will know which knee is stronger than the other until he goes live.

I have two questions. First of all, the guy from seahawks.com, I think his name is Tony Ventrella, said that Jackson and Carlson were supposed to be in Seattle today. Are they? And is there an approximate time to when we should start hearing about UDFA?

Good, informative interview.

seafanalways @ 17:22 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
Frank do you know when we will find out which UDFAs we signed?
RichmondHawk @ 17:38 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
Yeah ask him who's going to compete for the RG spot.

IDHawkman @ 17:55 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
I just hope he takes advantage of the talent he has now instead of playing that crap "prevent" stuff we've seen in every loss we had last year.

For those Hawk Fans over 40, I am told that Red Bryant is engaged to the daughter of Hawk great Jacob Green. I heard this on ESPN or NFL network. Hope it is true because it is a good story and a great bridge between great Hawk teams of the 80s and the millinium.
seafanalways @ 20:23 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
hey mkelly, Everyone already knows this, Frank already put it in his blog.
Bernie42 @ 21:31 - Sunday, April 27th, 2008 Email
Hey, some of us Hawk fans under 40 remember good ol' Jacob Green! :) I've been watching the Hawks since before I could ride a bike.

Maybe in 20-25 years from now the Seahawks can draft one of Red 'n Janelle's sons.

oSCHMITT, when did you tune in that you don't know Tony Ventrella? Are you one of those WV folks? If so, welcome to the Emerald City!
yellaman @ 10:45 - Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 Email
I'm concern with the back up LB positions. I know Tatupu, Peterson, Hill are the starters but who are the back ups? This is a concern if one of our starters get hurt. Another concern is OL no lineman was taken in the draft and I think it is an area that needs to be address (possibly next year) If a lineman gets hurts; for example, Wahle and/or Grey, who do we start? I think losing our 3rd round pick was a bad move (although I like the pick of Carlson) I would have like to have a 3 rd pick for another OL player. Also, I know we needed a long snapper but to use a draft pick on one was a stretch. I would have like to see another defensive player (safety or Linebacker) with that pick and then sign LS schmitt as a free agent. But these picks might work out. Go Hawks!!!

Hi everyone, I live in British Columbia (BC) and have been a Seahawk fan since the beginning.

Anyway,Seahawks Pro Bowl DB Marcus Trufant visited a BC school today and made a 2nd grader a very happy boy. This is another reason that I love the Seattle Seahawks so much, they take the time to visit fams outside the country area.

By the way, I am getting really impatient and looking forward to the start of the season to see what our new additions can produce..

Go Hawks!!!!
