I did not hear the interview, but KJR's Mitch Levy had Mike Holmgren on this morning and the station is reporting that Holmgren revealed that Marcus Tubbs had follow-up surgery on his knee to clean it out. Holmgren said Tubbs may not be available until the regular season. John Marshall did not mention this when we interviewed him the other day, though he did sound pessimistic about Tubbs' return. I am listening to Mitch go back over the interview, and apparently Holmgren said Rob Sims will be the starting right guard, the running game will be by committee, which means that Mo Morris will be on the roster, and he does not expect one back to ever get 25 carries in a game. Nate Burleson may not be punt returner next year if Burleson is a starting wide receiver. Holmgren did not say who the replacement would be. Rehab on Deion Branch going well but he does not expect him to be there at the beginning of the year. He said he is more concerned about the defensive tackles then the defensive ends. And that he has challenged his defensive coaches for the players to be better on the road.

I hate to admit it, but I am getting close to thinking that cutting Tubbs might be the best thing to do. It would be awesome if he were back and stay healthy, but its starting to look like this is not likely to happen.
Other than clearing a roster spot, I would be interested in knowing what the salary cap ramifications would be for releasing Tubbs. Losing both Ellis Wyms and Chuck Darby seems like a bigger issue now.
Tubbs needs to be given one more year. I doubt his contract is big enough that cutting him would benefit that much (yes I am too lazy to look his contract up). He really is a great player and I felt bad for him when he got injured last year. Even if we don't have him for first half of the season, having him for the division title run and playoffs would be worth it. Let him rest up. Besides our Bye is week 4.
I don't see any gain in cutting Tubbs. You neither get huge cap space, nor a roster spot. If he can't play, you PUP him for the camp, and the first 6 games - keeping you from loosing a roster spot. He's on the last year of his contract, which pays him $830K salary (Plus bonuses + Prorated signing bonus - but you don't get that back.)
He was a major contributor as starting DT during their superbowl year. (Only missing 4/19 games.) That year, opponents only rushed 3.6 YPC against us - And we were the 5th best defense against the run. In 06 we dropped down to 4.6 YPC for 26th Run Defense. (Luckily we improved back up to 12th last year - but we could be even better w/ Tubbs.) You gain almost nothing from cutting him. Best thing is to wait and see.
If it's just one of those orthroscopic "clean up" type surgeries, it's probably not a huge deal. They just sort of drain out the fluid and trim off any excess scar tissue growing in places it shouldn't be. Obviously, any knee surgery is a concern, but it's not like he had a major setback and reinjured the knee.
Just me,
Are you seriously implying that no one wants SA? Give it a chance, man. he was cut the week of the NFL draft - do you think any team in this league was going to reshuffle their draft boards or pay attention to SA at that time? Its also not like he was an undrafted free agent that would take any contract thrown at him like the 12 we signed right after that. Let the teams get their picks into mini camp and take a look at them. At some point around when training camp (not mini camps) comes around and the pads start to go on, he'll be getting calls if he hasn't signed somewhere by then anyways. Give it a rest though. The guy is gone. Let it be or do you really wish him ill will at this time? That would be kind of sad if you harbor those types of feelings.
IDHawkman - what I heard is that he just had a scope procedure on the repaired ACL. Seems this isn't too uncommon to clean things up after ACL surgery.
From everything I've followed, I think the guy is committed to rehab and we will eventually be happy when he is back. If he gets healthy again, he can do things Mebane and Red can't do.
sfarone,
I know at the time of the ACL some posters were a little relieved as they thought the Microfracture surgery really needs 2 years to fully heal. I also know that ACLs often have follow-ups that are not that bad but there is the occasional weird one that doesn't go as well. I fully anticipate Tubby to return this year. But I hope that if he is just getting ready as the season starts that we hold him on the PuP list and allow him to practice his way into playing shape rather than dump him straight on the roster and make him play into playing shape. It takes time to get back into playing shape. So, let's hope this all works out for the best. Tripplett - last year's DT starter for the Bills - is one heck of a 3rd rotation guy for our defensive line. Not much drop off if you ask me. DT1 - Rocky/Tubby DT2 - Mebane/Terrill DT3 - Red/Tripplett Holy toledo batman, where's the let up????
Im not sure why so many people think we will be without Rocky. I've only read what you've all read. If it is true, it doesn't sound great, but some of it sounds a little dubious. If you remember a similar thing happened with Locklear and he was only suspended 1 game.
PDX,
I don't think we are too afraid of the league's suspension and Rocky may be able to delay the court date for a year (I know that might be a little too long but you get the idea - he can delay this for quite some time). I think what we are all afraid of is the swift axe of one Tim Ruskell. He don't play that....
Id, I can live w/ that depth chart at DT...
DT1 - Rocky 6'3 308 / Tubby 6'3 318 DT2 - Mebane 6'1 314 / Terrill 6'2 295 DT3 - Red 6'5 328 / Tripplett 6'2 293 I had no idea Red was bigger than both Tubbs + Mebane. Me like. We also got Green (6'2 320), and Talavou (6'2 334) on the depth chart. I don't think we need speed or sacks from these guys. We just need someone to plug the middle; and keep the blockers off of Lofa.
AFA Ruskell...
I know he has the reputation about character (which I agree with), which keeps him from drafting / signing questionable guys. But when is the last time he ran someone out of town for a first offense. Sure, he ran out Stevens, and Jackson, and Koren - but all of them had patterns and multiple offences. Locklear is still here - if he get's in trouble again, then he should worry. Isn't this Rocky's first mishap?
I wish Marcus Tubbs all the best in his recovery. He has helped us when in and he is a good person. If we get him back then good for the Hawks. Tripplett will help either way in the rotation. Trippletts experience will also help a fairly youngish DT set of men.
I just sincerely hope that Marcus, at his weight and with the history of knee injuries, is walking straight and tall in 10 years as the good man he is. Any return at any time this year or next would be icing on the cake for the Hawks. But don't cut the guy. GO SEAHAWKS
Jammer,
With that group I don't think we have to ask "where's the beef". Also, if you see Red in the film, none of that is fat. That boy is Lean Beef. That's why I go so stoked when I heard his interview on the DCFanatic where he talks about his job being to "get off the snap and KNOCK the guard into the backfield or take on any double teams without giving up any ground and I think I did that pretty gooooood." Badcat, Just watched the clip off the NFL web site. Geez, Lo-Jack dwarfed Rivers in that chair. I wish he would have sat up straight though.
Holmgren said he had a feeling, and just a feeling, after meeting with Rocky that he was going to emerge from "this thing ok", or something like that. We'll see, but at the least it seems likely that Ruskell is going to let it play out. Feels like a Locklear-type situation, from Holmgren's comments.
