Seahawks Insider

The Seahawks held a mini-camp practice for a little more than 90 minutes this morning, and it was a wild sensation because there is a huge cottonwood tree that sits along a row of trees bordering the field. With the wind blowing, there were little white puffs of cotton floating through the air, making it seem as if it was snowing even though it was 60 degrees out. The entire field was covered in the stuff.

There were a lot of non-participants, though most were expected: Marcus Tubbs, Walter Jones, Chris Spencer, Rob Sims, Deion Branch, Bobby Engram (contract), Rocky Berard (court, toe), Mike Green, Patrick Kerney, Will Herring. C.J. Wallace was the only one that was a surprise; I am still waiting to hear from the PR dept. about his absence.

[More:]

I thought the biggest thing Mike Holmgren said during his 15-minute meeting with reporters was that he is taking more of a hands-on approach with the young receivers because he realizes that at least one of them and perhaps several of them are going to have to contribute. With that in mind, he said he is no longer asking versatility out of them but is instead having each guy focus on one position. Courtney Taylor, for instance, will work almost exclusively at the flanker spot. Keith Gilbertson seemed much more vocal with the wideouts today as well. He jumped on Nate Burleson for false starting on one play, screamed at Taylor for dropping a pass on another.

Holmgren said he still does not know how he is going to use T.J. Duckett. He said Julius Jones and Mo Morris will get the bulk of the carries, and Leonard Weaver will start at fullback. He doesn't really have a spot for Duckett, though. Short yardage? Third down? Is he a fullback or a halfback? Holmgren is not really sure just yet. More than one person has commented that Duckett seems especially slow. I think for now we have identified the odd man out in a crowded backfield.

Holmgren said he has not spoken to Bobby Engram, but he said definitively that Engram will be at training camp. Not sure how he knows that if he has not spoken to him, but, well, um ...

Both kickers got some kicks in front of the team. Without detailing specific numbers, I'd say that Olindo Mare looks more sharp than rookie Brandon Coutu. However, Holmgren also said they would not have drafted Coutu if they did not think he had a future in the league. He also told the story of Rian Longwell, and how his first two kicks in practice in Green Bay as a rookie went off the tackle's head and the tight end's rear end. Guys have bad days when they are nervous, Holmgren was pointing out, and Longwell has had a very long, successful career.

There was one play in particular that stood out during the practice. With rookie Justin Forsett running a sweep to the right, rookie defensive tackle Red Bryant came bursting through the line. Usually guys don't hit each other very hard in these practices, but Bryant came through so fast and collided with Forsett so violently that Forsett went right to the ground. He obliterated him, which predictably drew a lot of whoops from defensive players.

One other impressive play: Seneca Wallace was throwing a deep pass that Kevin Hobbs stepped in front of and intercepted.

I got to practice late because of the Rocky Bernard thing, so I will have more information about who was playing what positions tomorrow.

Gore, Jackson, and Edge better take notice... Red is here to knock you the F out!

Frank ESPN reported that Porkchop hurt his knee today. Any news on that? I love to hear Red Bryant is practicing hard. I know he is fired up because he is a rookie and all. I just hope everyone can get healthy and stay healthy.

I've been afraid that the Duckett signing was a waste from the beginning. I hope that isn't the case because i don't like seeing our FO making mistakes. Just seems like he doesn't fit in....can you afford to pay him that much to just be a short yardage back?

Thanks for the update Frank.

Very sad (but inevitable) news if that is true about Pork Chop.
we want the ball and we're gonna score @ 14:26 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008
lets just hope that red doesn't kill any of our players first...

Where on ESPN is the Pork Chop injury reported? If the Hawks are interested in another "especially slow" (however, quite potent) RB, Travis Henry is now available.

The ESPN story is by Sando on Hashmarks:

I'm interested to hear why CJ wasn't there. I liked his potential he showed until his injury in 07. Hopefully it was excused and has been taken care of. Love the fire I hear from Red and I haven't heard anything about Locklear at all and I've been watching ESPN since noon. Time will tell.

It is hard to imagine an NFL kicker booting one into the butt of a TE. Ol' Holmy sure can spin up the odd annecdote for humor.

Thanks for the link. Sando gone but not forgotten. Frank is in midseason form.

INJURY REPORT (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/)
Safety C.J. Wallace, the former Washington Husky, was not at practice after having an appendectomy on Thursday in Sacramento. He will not be able to travel for a week.

I don't believe for one minute that Holmgren doesn't know what to do with Duckett. Coach is dumb like a Fox. Let's see what the competition brings. Ruskell didn't spend that kind of $$$$$$ so a guy can carry a clip board. "The Seattle Seanomi".

Ya i saw that a little after my last visit thanks War_Hawk!
STTBM @ 15:46 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008
Age may have caught up with Duckett, but he was kicking butt at the end of last season when Detroit finally started feeding him the ball. Slow or not, the dude is a bowling ball.

Maybe he didnt stay in great shape during the offseason. He better get his butt in shape and speed up quick, else he will be odd man out in that backfield. Still, give the guy time. Weaver looked like crap all preseason last year untill the final fake game...
chuck_easton @ 16:25 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008 Email
Hey a Pork Chop injury, no matter how minor it may seem just means that another season has begun. How does the guy make it out of bed each morning without pulling something?
NickLicatasucks @ 16:32 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008 Email
The irony is amazing between Pork Chop and Hackett being injured on the same day. What next? Actually, Mark Prior went out for the season as well. Go figure....now what next? Will Mike Tyson get busted again doing something?

Ruskell will look smarter every day on the Hackett deal, as they say- those who do not pay attention to history are DOOMED TO REPEAT IT!

Sorry DJ!

Good news on Duckett- if he doesn't pan out- we can cut him!
Hero @ 17:18 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008 Email
You know I would think compared to other Running Backs like Julius Jones, MoMo, and Forsett that Duckett would look a little slow.

The guy weighs 254 pounds.

In my opinion it takes the bigger guys longer to knock off that off-season rust.

I just like how people start to doubt and its not even TC yet.
jasong96 @ 21:01 - Monday, June 2nd, 2008 Email
There's no way the Seahawks would even think about signing Travis Henry. Have you ever taken a look at his background? A statutory rape charge, at least one drug charge, and 9 kids from 9 different mothers! Say what you want about Shaun Alexander, but at least he gave the Hawks five great years at RB and wasn't a nuisance like Henry.

kudos to jasong96 for keeping it real at the RB position. And to add to what he is thinking- do you think that Duckett's best even comes close without pads on? I believe he is a pads on type of guy...

Is this the OTA formerly known as "passing camp"? I reckon this is a better event for people involved in the passing game. Not so much for RB's and run blocking. Too bad not more linemen are healthy for this. Sims, Spencer would certainly benefit by working more with Mike Wahle.

pabuwal @ 04:04 - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 Email
Duckett has changed teams more often than a Kicker. How often do those RBs ever pan out?
IDHawkman @ 09:09 - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 Email
Ducketts value would be in the 4th quarter with a lead. Let the young fast backs get the game going and wear away at the defense. Then at the end of the 2nd quarter or 4th quarter, put in Duckett and cram the ball down the opposing teams throat on a 8-10 minute drive (Just like we did so often in 2005) to rip the heart out of them.

Should be an interesting season especially if we get a lead in a game and if our young FB along with Weaver and Duckett can smash the ball down the opponents throats. Short of that, we might have a long season ahead.
bigmaq @ 10:39 - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 Email
Add Duckett to the bin marked "Ashworth-Pollack".
bigmaq @ 10:40 - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 Email
And we never should have removed Pork Chop from the bin with the "Red Cross" on it.
STTBM @ 14:16 - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008
bigmaq--Dont be labeling Duckett washed up yet. He was a pretty tough runner in Atlanta, he just isnt a home-run threat. And like I said, Duckett was a one-man wrecking ball the last five games of last year in Detroit, when those feeble-minded douche bags finally found some sense and started feeding Duckett the ball.

Lets see what Training Camp brings.

And dont you mean Pollard? Ashworth never was much good, he can only play RT.
