Somebody asked about if Mike Holmgren will have a different strategy in certain situations because he will have a new kicker. Honestly, I think it is WAY too early to tell on that. He doesn't even know who his kicker is going to be. I would think they would have some discussion at some point about how they are able to utilize either Olindo Mare or Brandon Coutu, but that is not going to take place until sometime in training camp or the preseason.

There was another question about the chances that Justin Forsett makes the roster. Honestly, that is a very long shot. I think they like the kid because he is a good football player, but his size or lack thereof severely limits him. Beyond that, the numbers just don't work out. You figure they are locked into Julius Jones, T.J. Duckett, Leonard Weaver Owen Schmitt and Maurice Morris. And that just about does it. If they were to keep an extra RB, my guess is it would be somebody better suited to special teams like David Kirtman or even Dan Curran.

I know your a respected part of the media. And you would never do anything to risk any harsh feelings with the hawks or its players. Are you allowed to comment on what you think. Like who should be our kicker? can you talk about what you would like to see move wise? I love all the reporting though thank you very much.

But will T.J. Duckett REALLY end up making the roster? I think he ends up cut when it is all said and done.

pabuwal,

5 year deal with 4 million guaranteed. That alone says he makes the team.

You don't give someone 4 million dollars and NOT keep them.

Making an NFL roster is almost as much about politics and business as it is skill.

The fact is, if you have a 5th RB slot and you can keep an unproven rookie that was drafted in the 7th round or an NFL vet that you've just signed to a multi-year contract with a fairly large bonus attached the NFL vet gets the job. Your #5 RB doesn't play that much anyway except for special teams.

The three locks at RB are most likely Jones, Morris, and Weaver. If Schmitt shows anything in camp he'll be kept for ST and backup FB.

So you have Forsett and Duckett fighting for that likely 5th and final spot. Again, unless Forsett comes in and just blows the doors off everyone and somehow makes it impossible not to name him the starter, he's practice squad bound at best.

Forsett has more special teams ability than Kirtman because he can actually return kicks. Kirtman is completely worthless. Has he ever made a significant block or tackle on special teams? If not... then why keep him? He can't block out of the backfield, he isn't a runner, and he isn't a good receiver.

Weaver can catch and is improving as a blocker. Duckett can run and block. There is no way Kirtman sticks.

what about someone like san diego's darren sproles? the guy's only 5'6", but from what i understand (not a huge chargers fan, so, bear with me), they seem to like what he can do.

wouldn't forsett fit in the program in a similar role?

IMO, it's not someone like Duckett that Forsett has to beat out in order to make the team, it's more like Mo Morris. Forsett is a finesse/speed back, much like Morris. Duckett is here because he's a smash mouth runner, with the versatility to double as a FB. After watching this team struggle as badly as it did in short yardage situations all freaking year long, Duckett had better not be getting cut.

Maurice Morris' value to this team is based on his knowledge of the offense and what he is capable of doing within Holmgren's offense. So for Forsett, I think he's not only going to have to show that he can be an electric return man (something Morris was never really able to do), but he's going to have to also prove that he's capable of producing as a back in this offense. It's a long shot, but I've seen stranger things happen in this league before.

armyfireman,

i have no problem giving an opinion. from what i have seen olindo mare is the better kicker. but, that doesn't take into account his salary (lower) and the long-term potential of coutu, not to mention the fact that the team used a sixth-round draft pick on coutu. so while it should not matter, the decision is not always open and shut.
williambryan @ 22:47 - Sunday, June 8th, 2008 Email
Sekolah, It is well documented that Duckett has not been a successful short yardage back, he is just a run of the mill back who has had a subpar career but did come on late last year for the Lions.

Morris is not a finesse/speed back he is a one cut and go back. Julius Jones is the same but he is a little tougher back than Morris. I think Forsett would be a great addition to the team as a "Sproles" type player and by the way Sproles is awesome, especially at filling the role his team asks him to.

I'm hopeful that Forsett takes Morris' spot on the team but Holmgren and his loyalties and he has a built in reason to keep him, He is the only back on the team with extensive experience in his offense. I like Morris but IMO Forsett has a real chance to be an impact player and I would like to see him on the team.

I think we are all overlooking the practice squad as well. The Seahawks typically carry one or two skill position players on the practice squad (usually it's a WR and FB as Kirtman has been up and down). Maybe this is the year they let the young wideouts play and instead decide to keep a RB on the practice squad.

I think Forsett might be a good player down the road, and with Mo's and Weav's injury histories, it might be wise to keep an extra running back in the fold. Mo has been banged up a little the last couple of years (but don't get me wrong, he has still played well when called upon). It just might make sense to hold on to Forsett.

I doubt he will be picked up quickly, as chances are the Hawks won't be showcasing him in preseason games since they have a few new backs who really need the work within the system.
charlien @ 09:04 - Monday, June 9th, 2008 Email
Forsett makes this team. He's capable of big plays on returns, and will be productive out of the backfield once he learns the system. I agree with williambryan that Morris could be the one to go, as he and Jones are similar runners only Jones is better.

I also think that we shouldn't expect too much from Duckett. He's bounced around from team to team for a reason. He's only here because Ruskell had him in Atlanta.
