This is the press release:

Kirkland, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks have signed long snapper Tyler Schmitt and kicker Brandon Coutu to multi-year deals, the team announced this afternoon.

Schmitt was drafted in the sixth round (189th overall) out of San Diego State and Coutu was drafted with the second of two seventh round picks (235th overall) out of Georgia in this year’s NFL Draft.

The Seahawks now have three of their seven draft picks under contract.

It's pretty much standard practice for the lowest picks to get signed first. I guess we'll see Owen "the Runaway Beer Truck" get signed next.

Heh. The kicker and the long snapper. Sounds like the beginning of a nursery rhyme.

I want to know how much money they're going to fork out for Jackson and Carlson.

Does a team keep a PK on the practice squad? I dont think so. i was just wondering because if we locked him up for a mult year contract does that mean he has a upper edge going into camp. I am nervous about our kicking situation. I would hate to see us loose close games because a kicker shanks one.

Who was cut to make room?
chuck_easton @ 06:55 - Thursday, June 26th, 2008 Email
Nobody needed to be cut. Remember, the team let go three players earlier in the week.

armyfireman03,

Signing a 7th rounder to a 4 year deal would appear to be standard operating procedure. It doesn't mean he'll still be around after cut downs.

Even if he goes onto the practice squad, the team releases him thus voiding this contract and Coutu would have to sign a practice squad contract. If he is ever moved to the 53 man roster he gets to sign yet another new (but probably similar to this one) contract.

Hey, I'm a lawyer by trade. To me contracts are like best selling novels to normal people! :)

Coutu is still going to have to win the kicker competition in camp.
