I was able to catch up with wide receivers coach Keith Gilbertson recently to get his thoughts on some of his players.
Before I run that, though, I wanted to announce that the blog is going to be slow until training camp unless there is breaking news. I am going on vacation for a while during this "slow" time in the NFL schedule. Once things heat up again for training camp, we'll be back with more frequent posts.
Having said that, here is the Keith Gilbertson interview:
Q: Now that you are the wide receivers coach, can you evaluate those players you are now coaching?
A: I’m sure you are saying that Bobby, Nate and Deion are pretty established guys. But of the young guys, you start with the Ben Obomanu, he has played some, he has been with us now going on his third year, he can all the spots, all four receiver spots, very very bright guy. He has had some really good practices. He is probably ahead of everybody in terms of what he knows. Then you say Courtney Taylor, who had some sensational practices because of his size and speed, but he has been hampered by injuries. That slowed him down. I thought Jordan Kent has been a very pleasant surprise. He has a long way to go, because football is kind of new to him and he has improved his game a lot. As long as he catches them clean and understands the refinements of the position, he will keep getting better. And I thought Logan had good days. His practices are good, he has the fundamentals down of a couple spots. Every once in a while he will revert back to some fundamental things that I thought were setting him back but when he does it right he is a good player. He has great vertical speed, he is strong, he has great hands. When he stays within the fundamentals of the offense he is really good.
Q: Let’s assume Deion will miss the beginning of the year, do you have a sense of who that third guy is going to be?
A: Oh, you have to go through camp. There is a lot of practice and a lot of things, four preseason games, it will weed itself out. You hate to say this, you have guys with a pulled ham, a pulled quad, and that sets them back. I want these guys to compete. They have to compete because you are only going to keep so many receivers.
Q: How many will you keep? Five?
A: Oh, I don’t know. Whatever Coach Holmgren decides in that regard. But you don’t keep seven or eight active. There are some guys who will be on the practice squad, but these guys are competing for jobs.
Q: Mike talked about this a little bit, but if Nate is going to be one of your starting guys he is probably not going to be a returner?
A: That is out of my department.
Q: What do you like about Courtney Taylor?
A: He has great vertical speed, he has good size, he has made plays here in the camps. He can get by people. There is always something that is holding hi back though. A year ago we thought he was going to be a guy who was ready on the first Sunday. And then he had a pulled something that held him back. So then he is on IR and missing practice. All those things that hold a guy back – because you know the train keeps rolling, so if you are out, and missing practice and falling behind. So if he can stay healthy and make sure he gets all the reps and all the fundamentals of playing, I am excited about him.
Q: How has this transition been for you?
A: Well, it really hasn’t been all that different because the thrust of what I had done the last few years as a coordinator at Washington was all passing game stuff. And even though my title was assistant line coach, 95 percent of my time was spent on the passing game. I really did very little with the offensive line. As soon as I got to work here, after a few weeks Mike said I’d like you to work on these passing game projects. And he knew that was kind of my thing. So that is kind of where I have been anyway so it has not been that different.
COMMENTS:
Newspapers will always be around. If they go away this country will have tons of constipated male boomers.
This blog is great for what it focuses on. If you are looking for in depth statistical analysis or overly opinionated rants there are other places for that.
See you when camp rolls around Frank and keep up the good work.
Frank, you must have some pretty thick skin to keep doing this blog with all of the personal attacks. I think the only thing that would make some of these guys happy is if the blog shut down comletely. I, for one, will be checking back every day, severla times a day for as long as it is here. Keep up the good work, enjoy your time off and we will see you at training camp.
Yet here they all are. Because no matter what they say, there is more Hawks info here than anywhere else. You don't see a killer Times or P-I Hawks blog....
Have a good vacation Frank and we'll see you when training camp rolls around.
Impressive display you went a whole week without calling another blogger "narrow-minded and short sided." - Humiliator
In that instance I was referring to the person's philosophy about football. I wasn't personally calling him a name or trying to put him down. I think there's a difference. A lot of people come on here and call me every name in the book, and I've never stooped to that level by responding. I'll talk football with fellow readers all day, but I won't get into a personal mud-slinging contest.
I don't want to leave The News Tribune.. I want The News Tribune to be better.. They have a reporter named Ryan Divish who really doesn't shy away from hard work, and would be perfect for this blog..
"You don't see a killer Times or P-I Hawks blog...."
No, that's why I've never even been to those. Like I said before, Seahawk Addicts is by far the best blog. Check it out, I promise you won't miss this one.
I love that this is a blog from a reporter who is on campus, at the games, in the locker room etc., but there does seem to be something missing from the heart of his questioning, something that lacks that killer instinct to get to the hard questions, or maybe it is an inability to capitolize on opportunities to get better information ... whatever it is, Frank just seems to come up a bit short for a guy who has the access that he has.
So, the bar gets lowerd and we move on an appreciate the blog for what it is, because it is clear that it cannot come back up to the level it was at a year ago. It is just not going to happen. But there is a place for this blog in the world of Seahawk news ... it's just that it is no longer the only place to be. The insider has to be supplemented much more than was previously the case. Oh well.
If you believe that was well said, and he said, "we move on an appreciate the blog for what it is", why haven't you moved on, but instead opted to incessantly say the same thing over and over again?
It doesn't appear that you really believe it was well said. If so, I don't understand the contradiction.
I understand what you're saying, and agree with you. Its important to be specific and say what we mean.
In my opinion the ongoing complaining is unreasonable, juvenile, and a waste of time. If the service is available elsewhere, go elsewhere. The points have been made. The discussion now is moot. I see this as bordering on troll-like behavior now. Would you agree?
When we get back to football, when the camps start, this incessant carping might be tolerable. But watching Zippy and his pinhead friends slam everyone and everything is just boring and childish. Take a chill baby bottle and a burp, please. Then change the crap in your pants and in your attitude. Grow up or go away. This is a football blog, Zippy.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
Wake me when the camps start. Are we having fun yet?
GO SEAHAWKS
How about special teams?
Tyler Schmitt looks automatic in the Greg Zauner videos, doesn't he? They've called him the best long-snapper to EVER come out of the draft.. but how about our other late round pick of Brandon Coutu? Some people think it was a wasted pick because he had such a terrible senior season at Georgia (he only averaged 59 yards on his kickoff's and knocked 3 of them out of bounds).. Mare has looked great so far in mini-camps.. Soooo - if Mare beats out Coutu in camp, where do you think we go from there? A lot of people have suggested the practice squad.. Is that likely? I suppose it will be predicated on the potential he shows DeHaven during the preseason..
What do you think will happen? Do you think it was a good draft selection? We had to get some competition for Mare, right? Was he the right choice? Should we have taken another project O-lineman or WR with that pick and signed an UDFA kicker?
There is one more thing to consider when talking about Coutu.. They have since shortened up his technique since his senior season, and he's claimed to have re-gained some power and accuracy on field goals.. Will it be enough?
"In my opinion the ongoing complaining is unreasonable, juvenile, and a waste of time. If the service is available elsewhere, go elsewhere. The points have been made. The discussion now is moot. I see this as bordering on troll-like behavior now. Would you agree?"
In a large part, yes. But only as it pertains to myself.
I don't know that it necessarily holds true that once points have been made that a discussion becomes moot. particularly not if those points pertain to an ongoing situation that the speaker is attempting to exert an influence upon ... it's not how I would go about it, but who am I to say that Snydro is wrong for going about things his own way? And more importantly, who's to say that his incessant rants have not had a measure of the desired effect on the blog?
As long as he remains withing the rules, I have no problem skipping ahead to the next post if I've had enough of his current rant.
While I could see Seattle being intrigued at the idea that Bentley could probably take over RG, I don't see this team as being one that will spend alot of money given the number of offensive linemen the team already has on the roster.
That being said, Bentley who reportedly actually would prefer to play guard over Center would definitely give Sims and Willis a run for their money at RG.
I just don't see Seattle getting involved in the eventual bidding war.
I think folks are being a little harsh on Frank. It is clear that football isn't his passion, this is just his job so he is doing it to the best of his ability, by comparison Sando had a long standing love affair with football and this was his outlet for it.
Sando invited discussion, analysis and debate, Frank doesn't and that is okay. Frank isn't Sando nor should we expect him to be. They guy gives what he has to give and rather than complain about that we should accept it and move on.
The only real complaint that we can make is to the Trib about the lack of support for the blog and it not living up to expectations which is a legitimate complaint for us to make! It is after all their blog and they are a business, if they feel that the lack of quality here will effect subscription or advertising then you might see change here, but give Frank a break, he is doing the best he can within the parameters of his job.
Seriously, all of you people here that think that everybody needs to be in lockstep with whoever runs the blog or leave... what is wrong with you? The News Tribune's JOB is to report news. Why even have this blog if they're going to let it waste away? Do newspapers just stop the presses and take a vacation on slow news days? NO. They FIND things to report on. The same should apply to this blog. They DO make money off of it through advertisements. Be realistic. This blog wouldn't be here if they didn't. I can't understand why you are intent on driving away people like Billy Watson and Snydro who are knowledgeable and passionate about the Seahawks and football in general.
If you read the Sonics blogs at all, Snydro actually gives the reporter a lot of compliments. Why? Because the guy does his job and does it well. He has very detailed stories, lots of links, and actually seems like he cares. Snydro may be harsh, but he is RIGHT. He gave Sando a hard time, all the time, which I didn't understand... but at least he admits (in hindsight) that Sando was the man. Obviously Sando is gone, but his successor should have been better than this... especially considering all of the hard work that Sando put in to build a loyal base of readers.
Frank's passion may not be football, which is fine, of course. That being said, if he is not happy with his job, he should ask for a reassignment. I'm sure there are a TON of young would-be reporters that would do anything for the opportunity to talk football for a job and get insider access to the Seahawks games, players, locker rooms, and press conferences. I know I would. Look at the kid over at Seahawk Addicts. He's not the best writer in the world (his spelling and grammar could use some work), but he's a link MACHINE and when there's no news... he stirs things up to stimulate conversation. In addition, he doesn't work for a newspaper or have any of the resources that TNT reporters have (or funding for that matter). Field Gulls does season retros and explains football (AWESOME series of articles) to better educate their readership.
I know, I know... I don't have to come here if I don't like it. But I do come here in the hope that things will change at some point. Of course, I just visit this site a lot less. Sure, TNT doesn't have to care... if their business model is to never get bigger, never improve, and alienate the loyal readership that they DO have. I wish them the best with that. I'll continue to check in occasionally to see if they ever wise up, but I'm setting my expectations low as to not be disappointed.
Opinionated does not necessarily equal knowledgeable.
To whoever said I can't take it, though - why would you think that? I barely ever respond any of it, and it doesn't affect me or deter me in the least..
The cost for the Trib to maintain the site is about zero. Give that press pass to someone who has a passion for football in general and the Hawks in particular and let's get on with it.
You used to make more points that made sense, but lately it seems you just want to be a bee in a bonnet.
bassnw--For once, I see your point. I dont totally agree, but I see where youre coming from.
Thank you for being another voice of reason. The person in charge of this blog should be passionate about the Seahawks and football; that's all that really needs to be said.
I'm sure nobody here will listen and nothing will change because nobody likes disturbing the status quo... but TNT would be smart to make a move on this matter.
Some may find it annoying, and say that I post too much - but the squeaky wheel gets the grease..
Everybody should have the right to their opinion... that is why people go on message boards, isn't it? To hear others' opinions, state their own, discuss and debate.
Seahawk Addicts is not a professional site, you are correct, but that works both for and against it. It works for it in that they do not have to be up to journalistic standards as this site does. It works against in that, as you stated, they come off as crude and juvenile at times. They also don't have access to any "insider" information. The problem with this site is that they DO have access to the team and they don't utilize it. When they do, it is in the most halfhearted, obviously disinterested way possible.
No name calling, no bashing... and good call on Michael Vick. That guy has been the definition of a scumbag his entire career, from Ron Mexico (Super Terrific Dude, as seen on a sign in the crowd the next week) to the water bottle incident (how dumb can you be?) to the dog fighting. Why the NFL allows people to even entertain the notion of Vick coming back is absurd to me. He might be a dynamic player, but he will damage the image of the league beyond repair. Don't even get me started on "Pacman". And why is Ray Lewis the murderer still in the NFL?
Despite his accomplishments on the field, Lewis' public image was tarnished following a Super Bowl party on January 31, 2000. Following this party a fight broke out and Jacinth Baker, 21, and Richard Lollar, 24, died from stab wounds. Lewis and two companions, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were brought to an Atlanta police station for questioning. During the questioning Lewis lied to investigators by saying he did not know the other two suspects. However Lewis' limousine driver told the police that he saw Lewis strike one of the victims. The driver further stated that Lewis told the other occupants to stay quiet, and that Sweeting and Oakley stated "I stabbed mine". Evelyn Sparks, who was riding in the limousine, had said she saw another passenger dump a white hotel laundry bag into a garbage bin. Prosecutors said the bag contained Lewis's white suit and alleged it had blood on it. Eleven days later, along with Oakley and Sweeting, Lewis was indicted for murder and aggravated assault.
Lewis's attorney arranged with prosecutors to dismiss the murder charges if Lewis pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice[13] in exchange for him testifying against Oakley and Sweeting. Lewis accepted the plea bargain and was sentenced to one year of probation. He was not suspended by the NFL but was fined US$250,000, a league record at the time.
Oakley and Sweeting were acquitted of the charges in June 2000; the Atlanta Police Department and District Attorney's office believe Lewis and his associates to be guilty[citation needed]. No other suspects have ever been arrested for the crime.
----------
When you are indicted for murder, it is a formal accusation that you committed the crime. Just because he got a "NFL special" plea bargain doesn't mean he's not guilty. Besides, why was his suit covered in blood if he wasn't directly involved? Ignorant? Hardly.
