It wouldn't be training camp without Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren letting off some steam, right?

A fuming Holmgren let loose on the team this morning, using some colorful language we can't repeat here. Holmgren was upset with the pace of practice during 7-on-7 and team drills, which included some dropped passes and missed assignments, and felt the offense was playing tentatively.

Not a big deal, really. This happens during training camp when guys get dead legs from all of the running, particularly in a morning practice on a chilly day when it's hard to get going. And the guys seemed to finish things on a strong note.

However, there was some gasps from the sidelines when Matt Hasselbeck limped off the field on the second-to-last play during team drills.

Hasselbeck's plant leg seemed to buckle on a three-step drop and he dropped the ball and yelped in pain. I'm not sure if Hasselbeck got his foot stepped on or just rolled his ankle, but he seemed OK after practice.

Some other observations from the first day of full contact.

[More:]

-- Julius Jones picked up linebacker Wesley Mallard on an inside blitz with an audible thud, something usually unseen from a halfback around here.

-- Josh Wilson continues to impress, making a couple nice plays and deflecting balls in pass coverage.

-- After struggling the first few days of camp punter Reggie Hodges boomed several long punts during special teams drills. Ryan Plackemeier might want to get healthy.

-- TE John Carlson made a couple nice catches down field, although safety Deon Grant let up on a potential hit on a seam route down the middle that would have at least had Carlson seeing stars for 30 seconds. Carlson also has a nickname -- New Money.

-- With Chris Spencer and Chris Gray unable to go, the Hawks are breaking in a new center, second-year guard Mansfield Wrotto. And the Georgia Tech product didn't look bad in his first action. He's got a nice base on pass blocking and moves his feet well.

-- Mike Wahle is the real deal, and basically stuffed all comers in pass-blocking drills.

-- Logan Payne continued his vacuum cleaner routine, sucking in every ball thrown to him. Two of the nicer catches included what looked like an impressive, one-handed catch on a go route over Josh Wilson that the defensive coaches waved off. Payne also wrestled a ball away from Marcus Trufant on an underthrown go route from Hasselbeck.

-- Patrick Kerney suited up but left the practice field early with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Darryl Tapp got the nod at right end and Lawrence Jackson replaced Kerney at left end during team drills, with Brandon Mebane and Rocky Bernard lining up inside. Offensively on the line with Spencer and Gray out, Walter Jones and Floyd Womack played left tackle, Wahle was at left guard, Steve Vallos played center, and Rob Sims (right guard) and Sean Locklear (right tackle) manned the right side.

Oh man, this just got me all jacked up.. I can't wait to see Logan Payne in a pre-season game.. And Mike Wahle, and Josh Wilson, and Julius Jones, and... IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON!

Dear god, take it easy Hass.! Anyway, sounds like JJ is having a good camp so far, making catches and picking up blitzes. What's that about?!? Love reading about Holmgren blow-ups, tickles me for some reason. Thanks for the update.
Dukeshire @ 12:38 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
With ya, This is such a great time of year.
watsoni @ 13:01 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
agreed to both. but why is no one giving JJ any credit? Espn and Si are hating on him hard, ranking him far down the lists. On Si's fantasy rankings he was even ranked below rookie Jonathan Stewart. I think he will be a 1,000 yard back this year.

Love all the info. Just praying for no injuries at this point, and looking to see who puts themselves ahead of everyone else. Great job on the formatting as well, very readable. Please tell me you aren't slowing down tomorrow when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named comes back!

Still nothing to report on the Kickers?

Anybody have Brett Favre's cell phone number?

Love to hear about Wahle a Wrotto, I Spencer feels pushed.
Dukeshire @ 13:32 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
No!! Just the thought of that circus coming to Seattle make me ill.
F12CHawk @ 14:02 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
Excactly!! Enough with all the Favre to the Hawks talk!! Not going to happen!

I love that Holmgren is never afraid to rip into the players for slacking a little!! Thats one of the things I will miss most when he is gone.
Static7 @ 15:11 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
The only time i would ever want Favre to come over, was if Hasselbeck blew out his ACL in training camp or in a pre-season game and was done for the year(God-Forbid!!!!).

In the NFL media world, O linemen are to be little seen or heard from. Thanks for the comments on Wrotto and Wahle.

Glad to read Wrotto's gots the feets movin but it's Simms footwork that concerns me. It's all different moving from left to right guard.

On a more germane note, is Brett Farve having fun again?
YeeHaawks @ 16:09 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
Good Stuff Eric thanks! Hope to hear alot more from you in the future. Get all the bumps and bruises out of the way early. A kinder, gentler Holmy this year? Me thinks not.
bruzyb @ 16:48 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008 Email
I second GeorgeOhWell on OL comments--need more about them (and DL). The Wahle sounds already like he may be the impact LG we've needed there for, what, 3 years now?!
Surf Hawk @ 18:19 - Sunday, July 27th, 2008
Man I love me some Eric Williams. You have rescued this blog. Love all the details on the line play. Some great stuff you've been putting together these last few days.

There's an internet rumor going around that EW is actually Frank Hughes and all the haters are actually kissing his arse.

:)

Yea, nothing like trying to make a name for somebody else

Great info! Thank you!

Wrotto working out at Center. Spencer might want to get healthy...

lol! Oh man, that is funny.

Hey Eric, how did the afternoon practice go? I heard Hass was back out there and looked fine.. any comment on that?

How are Coutu and Mare looking?

How did Tubbs and Branch look doing their sprints? Has Spencer been doing any running on the sideline? What does his shoulder rehab involve? Who played with the first teams on the O-line and D-line with Kerney and Walt sitting out in the afternoon?
nardman @ 01:20 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
geeez. This is NO JOKE, a Sando level of quality on this blog. That is a supreme compliment(as all of you know), because IMO Sando is like a more rational John Clayton. I sure hope this keeps goin, because I had written this site off for the last few months. Kudos current guys, THANK YOU!
jgg007 @ 06:22 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
Uh oh... guess you all spoke too soon. No afternoon practice update? Is Frank back in town or did all the praise go to EW's head?
Dukeshire @ 09:11 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
There haven't been any real afternoon updates. Don't understand why. Heard the same thing about Hass. Clare and O'Neil at the Times have updates on yesterdays afternoon practice.
thedude @ 09:24 - Monday, July 28th, 2008
Wrotto sounds like the real deal...maybe this line is shaping better than we thought. And its good to hear about a young receiver going after a ball and wrestling it away from a defender...i remember watching Obamanu just sit in a curl route and the CB coming up to deflect it. Not very nice!
Dukeshire @ 09:32 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
No morning "primers"? Frank must be back.
Dukeshire @ 10:50 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
Keep it going Eric. But someone has time to delete posts but not enough to update the blog?
jasoninalaska @ 11:12 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
Wrotto is going to be a stud, I thought that when we drafted him. For some reason lately we've drafted some great O-line guys. We do need to get someone in there to replace Walter though, he's getting up there. A free agent pick-up isn't the way to go, rather draft one next year, and maybe start finding our QB of the future as well. Hate to say it but Hasselbeck is getting up there too.
nighthawk2 @ 11:37 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
Always amused at these Christian coaches and players who use language that can't be reprinted.

Payne won't make the active roster no matter how well he does. Not on this team. Holmgren doesn't like white receivers (the attempted screwing of Jerheme Urban by he and Ruskell until a team revolt made them do the right thing, anyone?). I think Jurivcious only got playing time due to injuries.

I'll believe Wrotto is not a bust when I see it.
Dukeshire @ 12:13 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
What are you talking about? Who said Wrotto was going to be a bust? And Holmgren is now a racist, interesting.
mikew177 @ 12:29 - Monday, July 28th, 2008 Email
Eric,

One thing I really like about last years camp coverage were the links to the of the divisions goings on. Do you think that's something you guys could look into doing again this season? Great work so far. Even though it means the sunshine is on it's way out again, I'm excited for the opening day, sounds like the 12th Man is going to have a lot to cheer about.

P.S. I wonder who's going to warn us about not getting hit by the train outside of the stadium now that Shaun's gone?
