Here is my story on Warren Moon that will appear in tomorrow's News Tribune:
KIRKLAND – Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, who also serves as the Seattle Seahawks’ color announcer on radio, apologized on Thursday for his latest scrape with the law.
Moon, who pled guilty to negligent driving on Tuesday after being arrested for DUI for the second time in eight months, confirmed that he will back this season with partner Steve Raible, but also understands that he is getting no other chances.
“The writing is on the wall that that is pretty much the way it is going to be,” Moon said after meeting with reporters following the morning practice. “It’s kind of like three strikes and you’re out. But I’m not going to just base it all on just my job. It’s something that I don’t want to go through again personally.
“I really look at myself as being a person that has high integrity and high character and I've worked a lot of years to get to that. To have these type of errors in judgment is something that's not part of my character. It's something I’m deeply sorry about. I'm sorry that I've put myself, my family and also the Seahawks organization in this type of position.”
Moon was arrested in April 2007 under suspicion of DUI but was charged with negligent driving. In December, he was charged with DUI and on Tuesday pled guilty again to negligent driving.
Moon was sentenced to two days in jail or five days of home detention, as well as a $1,000 fine, $500 of which was suspended.
Moon said he will serve the five days of home detention, though the sentencing guidelines do allow him to come to work.
He also said that he entered an outpatient educational drug treatment program to make sure that he didn’t have an alcohol problem.
“Sometimes when you go through this thing and you start hearing a lot about it, you start talking a lot about it, you start wondering whether you do have a problem or not,” Moon said. “That's something I wanted to find out more so I took the initiative to make sure that that wasn't the case.”
Moon said he certainly feared during the process that he was going to lose job with the Seahawks. But he also worried that his image has been permanently tarnished – though he said he received many letters of support.
“It’s been one of the toughest things I have had to deal with,” Moon said. “There is the perception out there that I have a problem. There is the perception out there that I am this out-of-control drunk driving around the streets of Seattle. And that is not the case. But I know how perception-to-reality works. But I have no one to blame but myself. I put myself in this situation.”
COMMENTS:
However, in Washington state with our "progressive" goverment, you can technically/legally be arrested for a DUI with a blood alchol level as low at .005. Yeah, that's right, THAT's a sip of beer.
Moon could have had 1 or 2 drinks, and legally, he'd be DUI.
Isn't it ironic that Coors Light is the largest NFL advertiser, and the Seahawks/Qwest Field allow fans to get absolutely trashed (check out the people in my section, 335), yet there's such a hug out cry over a DUI instance?
So... on top of the oppressive bag checks they (the NFL is already doing) are doing upon entry to stadiums, why not have every fan "blow" on the way out?
I won't lie, one of the best games I've ever been to was the NFC championship game against Carolina and by the end of the game I could barely walk I was so drunk. I also screamed my lungs out and had the time of my life, is that something to be embarrassed about?
