I have to head out to practice, but defensive tackle Red Bryant needs to have arthroscopic surgery to repair the knee injury that we wrote about yesterday. He will miss the rest of training camp. This now makes things more interesting for Chris Cooper and Larry Tripplett, who should get more reps with Bryant out. I'll get more details at practice.

Dang....I was looking forward to seeing Red in the rotation right away.

AT least it doesn't sound like it's an ACL, or that level of injury.

That is a shame. Get him healthy, the D needs that big dumptruck in the middle.

Well maybe he'll be coming back right around when Tubbs is injured again. Then we don't have to make any big roster decisions.

Not to be the bearer of BAD karma, but the scope is just a preliminary proceedure.

What this means is that the MRI showed significant enough damage to warrant going in and taking a look around.

It could mean a minor fix, but it could just as well be that they find the damage to be more extensive than originally hoped.

Until the team releases some information as to what was found, what was fixed, and what remains to be done recovery wise, I am taking the approach that he's gone for the year. If he comes back sooner, great.

Any surgical proceedure will put him out for at least the next 4 weeks. More likely he'll be put on PUP to start the year if things go well or IR if things are really bad.

Ive seen people return 2-3 weeks from arthriscopic surgery. The sky is not falling.

I'm prayin' for 'ya, Red.

swab,

Other sites are reporting this as cartilage damage with a minimum of 4 o 5 weeks of recovery.

Assuming he has the surgery soon (say tomorrow), then he's out until at least the 1st week of regular season.

The question will then be has he shown enough in just one week of practice (with no games played, not evan the scrimmage) as a rookie to warrant a spot on the 53 man roster over a Vet that has been there all training camp and all pre-season games?

Tough call for the team. That's why I'd put my money on PUP list for the 1st few weeks of the season at the minimum.
NickLicatasucks @ 12:08 - Friday, August 1st, 2008 Email
Placing Bryant on the PUP would preclude him from being available until after 6 weeks of the NFL season. I reckon they will make their decision based on how Bryant recovers from the surgery. If it is good...he stands a chance to play by week 3. If it is not that good, PUP or IR. Especially considering the number of big bodies who ARE experienced who are in camp. Too bad for Red...but maybe a blessing in disguise (regarding big Marcus' replacement).

chuck_easton - I agree, that's a sensible view to take of the situation at this point in time. We all hope that he makes it back in a relatively short time, but obviously the front office - and coaching staff - have to plan for not having Bryant around for the foreseeable future.

Still, I think Tripplett or Cooper are pretty strong alternatives for the 4th or 5th DT spot on the roster [assuming Bernard, Mebane, Terrill & Tubbs are ready to go on Opening Day]. At least we have plenty of depth on the DL - as opposed to other positions like center, linebacker, quarterback and, possibly, receiver...

Learn how to read, he had the surgery today.
chuck_easton @ 13:57 - Friday, August 1st, 2008 Email
swab,

Where does it say he had the surgery today? I have just read he NEEDS to have surgery. Show me something that says it was today.

And nobody is saying he

1) Won't be back
2) Won't make the team

We are just being practical in that he is a rookie with only 1 week of training camp under his belt competing with several proven NFL vets. Reality says his chances of getting a spot on the 53 man roster have taken a pretty big hit for 2008. He will be around.
chuck_easton @ 14:15 - Friday, August 1st, 2008 Email
OK swab,

I just saw in Frank's later post that the surgery was today. So if the 4 to 5 week timetable is correct the earliest that Bryant is ready is Friday August 29th.

That just happens to be the date of the Seahawks final pre-season game.

So, IF the healing time is only 4 weeks, and IF the team wants to put him into a game with zero practices from July 31 to August 29, then Bryant might just get some playing time in the last pre-season playoff game before final cuts have to be made on the 30th of August.

That is what I am saying. That's alot of ifs for the kid to have to overcome to land a spot on that 53 man roster. I'm not on the coaching staff so I don't know if he's already shown enough to go from 4th round draftee to what now pretty much has to be a guaranteed spot. Time will tell.
