This morning’s practice is finished and hard-to-please head coach Mike Holmgren seemed satisfied with the team’s effort, telling the guys good job as the team huddled at midfield on one of the practice fields at the completion of practice.

Holmgren should be happy. The offense looked crisp and several receivers made nice plays in both team and 7-on-7 drills.

Matt Hasselbeck also looked to be in midseason form throwing the ball, hitting receivers in stride on several square outs, skinny posts, fade patterns and inside routes.

The star performer of the day was the silent but deadly Ben Obomanu, who caught everything during practice, including a fade ball over Marcus Trufant for a score from Hasselbeck, and another great play on a deep post route from Hasselbeck with safety Kevin Hobbs on the coverage.

“Receiver seems to be the focal point now obviously,” veteran receiver Bobby Engram said. “And Ben is stepping up. He’s getting his opportunity, and he had a tremendous practice today.”

[More:]

Obomanu worked as the third receiver with Engram and Nate Burleson during team and 7-on-7.

Obomanu's college teammate, Courtney Taylor, also returned to full go after nursing a hamstring injury the last few days. Taylor looked good as well, making a nice catch on a sideline route and running with speed after a catch on a slant inside. He caught some balls on the jugs machine after practice.

However, Taylor did drop a ball in the end zone on an inside slant route against Kelly Jennings, letting the ball get into his pads.

Jordan Kent, the other receiver competing for a spot along with Logan Payne (still sitting out with a cracked rib), caught a 20-yard touchdown pass during red zone drill, getting cornerback Josh Wilson to bite as he geared down like he was going to run a square out, then running past Wilson on an inside seam route.

Kent’s footwork continues to improve, although he did allow linebacker Lance Laury to strip the ball from him on an inside route.

Bryan Gilmore also looked the best I’ve seen him this morning, doing a good job of taking some short routes and getting up field for more yardage.

Michael Bumpus and Will Heller both sat out with hamstring issues.

An issue for Seattle is depth at offensive line. The Seahawks only have 11 healthy offensive lineman in camp now, with Chris Spencer, Samuel Gutenkunst and Floyd Womack (knee) all nursing injuries and Chris Gray now retired.

That’s not a good position for the team to be in heading into its first preseason game, but they hope to get some of those guys back next week.

Walter Jones (left tackle), Mike Wahle (left guard), Steve Vallos (center), Rob Sims (right guard) and Sean Locklear (left tackle) ran with the first unit, which looked solid in both run and pass blocking during team drills.

Recent addition Ben Claxton wasted little time getting acclimated, playing center with the second unit while Mansfield Wrotto moved to right guard.

Engram, Burleson and Wallace caught punts during special teams period.

Others who did not practice include Wesley Mallard (hamstring), Patrick Kerney (calf), Larry Tripplett (knee), Red Bryant (knee), Jordan Babineaux (knee), Chris Cooper, Will Herring and Ryan Plackemeier.

Marcus Tubbs (knee) and Deion Branch (knee) also watched from the sidelines, but also got some agility work in.

Branch looked pretty good as he worked through some lateral movement drills, and Tubbs also seemed pretty agile going through stance and starts on the side.

The Seahawks will get their first opportunity to practice at their new facility in Renton, the VMAC, Wednesday morning. But the practice is invitation only, and not open to the public.

"safety Kevin Hobbs on the coverage." When did they move him from corner?

Who is this Mansfield Grotto character?

How's Kelin Johnson doing?

That note on punt returners is really interesting. Our top two recievers and our back up quarterback. Hmmmm

Still waiting to hear the severity of Womack and Babineaux's knee injuries. Any word?
BobbyK @ 13:28 - Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 Email
It seems as if Josh Wilson is always getting beat on some move --- going back to the reports from last year.

"Engram, Burleson and Wallace caught punts during special teams period."

Is that CJ or Seneca? If it is Seneca, that IS very interesting. How great would that be to watch?!

Dukeshire: We're still awaiting word on the severity of Pork Chop and Babineaux's injuries. I wasn't here yesterday but I've been told Pork Chop was on crutches yesterday. Babineaux came out at the end of practice.

muxedo76: Kelin Johnson looked fine but didn't stand out today. Defensively, Lofa Tatupu had a pick and Julian Peterson also deflected a couple passes. Jamar Adams continues to look solid.

BobbyK: except for getting beat on the double move by Kent, Wilson had a good practice and I think has played well so far in camp.

No one should pay any attention to Womack's injury status EVER. He can certainly fill in nicely when called upon, but that guy is a walking injury. Always something going on with his knee. In the last few years he's been injured more than anyone save perhaps Tubbs, Never depend on him.

Hmm How long does it take for a cracked rib to heal?
I asked about Payne in a previous blog earlier today.. Hope he comes back soon.
NickLicatasucks @ 14:12 - Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 Email
Pork Chop is as dependable as a Seattle politician.

I think he is allergic to the starting lineup. Everytime he runs with the first team- bam- injury!

We haven't heard much of Ray Willis this camp. I wonder how he is doing. Is he getting any reps at guard? Or just tackle? I'd imagine with the depth at guard he would likely be only at tackle this year. Hopefully that kid has a great preseason. he'll get his shots! Bring on Jared Allen.

Its really frustrating to hear Taylor keeps body-catching his inside TD routes. He dropped a sure touchdown last season in his limited game time. Taylor has the potential to be a star, but really needs to work on his technique. He better watch out, the much slower Obomanu will take his roster spot if he isnt careful. Coach Holmy will take consistency over flash every day of the week...

It sucks that Lewis cracked Paynes rib. Lewis is a bubble player, and Payne was more than likely going to get serious action this year, now he's got to nurse a nasty little injury. Cracked ribs can take ages to heal...properly anyway.
swab @ 15:05 - Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 Email
Lewis is not a bubble player. He is the only decent backup LB we have.

And we have to rely on Pork Chop unfortunately we didnt bother to add any more depth to our line in the draft.
NickLicatasucks @ 16:01 - Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 Email
STTBM- Lewis is a valuable contributor. Things like cracked ribs do heal and Payne needs to know when he goes into the middle these things can happen. He'll learn. I'm sure Lewis didn't try to injure him, just trying to help bring him down. I just hope Lewis doesn't get hurt, he's our only proven backup LB.
kurtisballard @ 20:26 - Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 Email
he will learn what? not to go over the middle? i don't want any of my receivers being afraid to go over the middle.

Lewis is the #4 LB. Payne is a bubble player.

"Silent but deadly Obomanu" Too funny!
thedude @ 11:07 - Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
yeah, "silent but deadly" sounds like a fart and i'm sure Obamnu wouldn't be thrilled about being compared to a fart. maybe he's a bubble player?
