Mike Holmgren's post-practice news conference started out innocently enough, talking about this and that.
And then we asked about Marcus Tubbs, and he drops in that they "put him on some list." On a list? Yeah, some list, not physically unable to perform list, because he essentially is a free agent. A free agent? You mean, like, he's been cut? Well, we wanted to let him go so he can get healthy and if he gets better he is welcome to come back.
Then, a few minutes later, he drops in that things are difficult with Engram. What happened with Bobby, Mike? Oh, well, he cracked a bone in his shoulder and is out for 6-8 weeks. Hmmm, that might be something you want to start the news conference with.
Anyway, what looked like an otherwise normal morning became a stunning turn of events, with the former first-round pick having his career ended and the guy who held out this summer because he wanted a contract extension having at least a quarter of his season collapse. Now, perhaps, we know why Engram wanted more security.
In the immediate, it appears as if the Seahawks are going to have to keep extra receivers on their roster because two of them need roster spots and won't be able to play immediately. Holmgren said he is going to have to see Branch practice for at least a week if he going to play in the season opener -- which I still find hard to believe. But where we had Michael Bumpus and probably Jordan Kent slated for the practice squad, one or maybe even both of them may make the active 53-man roster. The Engram thing is tricky because if you think he is going to be out eight week, maybe you PUP him. But if it is six weeks, you likely have to keep him on the active roster. Tim Ruskell has some difficult decisions to make.
Until this happened, I was going to write a story on Leroy Hill for tomorrow, and I asked him about his contract situation during the interview. He said as far as he knows, nothing is happening with the negotiations. In fact, he said, he doesn't even think there have been negotiations. He is trying to take it in stride since they have until next year to do something, and he understands it's a business; if he has to go somewhere else to get paid, he will do that.
This morning's practice started out with individual drill work, and I watched Mike Solari and Mike DeBord go over zone blocking schemes with the offensive line for a while. There was one funny sight when they were trying to coach them on Chicago's blitzing schemes. Because so many guys are hurt, a 160-pound ballboy had to wear a green beanie on his head and pose as a pass rusher. He was going against? Yep, Walter Jones. Big Walt didn't have a problem with him. Mike Holmgren doesn't usually take much interest in these types of drills, but he stood there watching intently for 20 minutes.
The kickers made all their attempts during special teams.
Matt Hasselbeck once again did not practice, joining a very very long list of sidelined players. Interestingly, when they ran 11-on-11 drills, Charlie Frye was with the first team and Seneca Wallace was with the second unit.
They also ran some sequences where the offense had its back up against the goal line, starting at the 2. On the first possession, the first team defense stopped the offense when Frye missed two passes, the second of which Marcus Trufant almost picked off.
On the second sequence, Seneca found Jordan Kent over the middle to get out of the situation. (Kyle Williams hurt his leg on the second play and left practice for good.)
On the third possession, my pen ran out of ink and I don't really remember how it ended -- though I do remember T.J. Duckett running into Trufant and Trufant having his contact pop out of his eye. Now that is power.
My inkless pen did not permit me to record the rest of practice, though there was not a great deal left after that -- at least until Holmgren dropped his bombshells.
COMMENTS:
Here is an idea... Djack. This is Holmgrens last year, Jack just got passed by Royal of the Broncos. The only thing that would have to happen is for Ruskell to let go of some pride. Djack was not a locker room problem for the players or coaches, he was only a problem for Ruskell. His chemistry with Hass was such that they were great together even when DJack wasn't practicing so there is no reason to think he couldn't come back and get back to work right?
1) Anyone who is Active at the start of training camp, cannot be PUP'd at anytime.
2) Anyone who starts camp on the PUP, can be activated anytime, up to the start of the regular season.
3) Anyone on the PUP at the start of the season, must sit out 6 games.
4) After 6 games, they can practice, and can be activated anytime, until week 10.
5) Anyone still on the PUP at week 10, must stop practicing, and can't play the rest of the season.
Thus, Bobby can't be PUP'd. Tubbs could have, then he would have been available week 8 (sit 6 games + bye week.). They could have activated him either week 8 or 9. Besides sending a message by cutting Tubbs; they probably freed up a spot on the 80. (I don't know if PUP'ing counts against the 80. I know it doesn't count against the 53 later.)
Obviously the Djack thing is more than a longshot but, I think the team at this point has to consider their options outside of their current roster. Engram and Branch have been injury prone recently. I like the young guys a lot too but this is Holmgrens last shot at a Super Bowl and I'm sure he wouldn't be against bringing DJack back.
We also have a training camp standout every year that is a WR.
If there was ever a position that can handle some injuries, it is this one. I guarantee there will be some quality WRs released or available for trade before the season starts.
If anyone was counting on Tubbs to contribute this year, they were really optimistic. The bigger deal is getting Red back.
Plus, what about HOG (HOward Green)? I love me some HOG!
I broke that button pressing it last season. To me Spencer qualifies as a bust. Beginning his fourth season, 26th pick overall in 2005, got thrown around like a rag doll last year, missed blocks, out of position, missed calls. Waste of a 1st round pick. I'd rather see Vellos start the rest of camp and give him the reps with the first team offense.
Burleson is in his 6th year and 3rd year with the Seahawks
Obomanu is in his 3rd year with the Seahawks
Taylor is in his 2nd year with the Seahawks
Payne is in his 2nd year with the Seahawks
Kent is in his 2nd year with the Seahawks
Even without Branch and Engram for the first 3 to 4 weeks of the season that is quite a bit of experience with the same team and same system.
Jerry Rice, (you know him, Mr. Everything as far as WR's go) could not come in and grasp the Seattle Offence in one season. Branch struggled his 1st year with the team and he's been a Superbowl MVP. Burleson had 3 years as an NFL player and starter but he struggled his 1st year.
Face it, there is nobody out there that is going to come in and know this system more than the 5 guys above that have been through a minimum of two full training camps and have been with the team day in and day out for a few years.
Joe Jurevicious was a rare exception of a FA player that was able to come in and grasp this offence right away.
Do you even watch the games Sherman?
man, makes you wonder if the seahawks aren't the worst team with first round draft mistakes, their fault or not. alexander was great, but chris mcintosh in the same year... pinches his next and never plays. then jeremy stevens... NEVER should have been drafted. marcus tubbs... just bad luck, pure and simple. chris spencer. even trufant up until last year... he was the 11th pick; should have had a big impact immediately. and kelly jennings... good player; probably can't complain because he was at very end of 1st round. So, while ruskell has done a VERY GOOD job in the lower rounds, HIS and Holmgren's upper tier picks are questionable. Which reminds, what the hell is up with josh wilson? we drafted a freakin' undersized corner back and he's getting beat out by an undrafted free agent in hobbs? and he sure as hell can't return punts or kicks; was lucky in the ram game last year with his td... AFTER trying to hand the ball off to burleson. Who knows? Maybe we'll strike gold with Carlson and LoJack.
nighthawk2 - "I broke that button pressing it last season".. made me laugh, very good. However, I haven't given up hope on Spencer yet, if for no other reason than I don't think that the team can afford to dismiss him given the complete lack of depth at that position. Sure Vallos did OK [satisfactory debut at center, but I'm not calling him the second coming of Mike Webster just yet...] but that position requires both skill and expereince. Maybe Vallos/Claxton/Wrotto have the skill but certainly not the experience.
I know folks are talking about signing an experienced WR to cover the [temporary] loss of Engram, but I think signing a veteran center is a more pressing need.
