Seahawks wide receiver Bobby Engram cracked a bone in his shoulder in Friday's game in Minnesota and is out for 6-8 weeks.

Mike Holmgren said that Courtney Taylor is slotted to step into that spot, but nothing it given. I wanted to get this out there and then I'll provide more in a later post.

Good grief! Well, I guess this means we'll see if the young 'uns can step up their game sooner rather than later.

Branch better be getting healthy...fast.
mister andersen @ 11:41 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
OUCH! Who's on the waiver wire???? Chris Henry time????
Osiris33 @ 11:42 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email

This is why you don't let a guy like DJ Hackett go when when you could have kept him for almost nothing.

"Timmay!"
swab @ 11:43 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Exactly. This is what happens when you dont bother to address WR, dont bother to sign Hackett, rely on 4 young guys that have never done anything and just hope it will work out.
spunjdog @ 11:44 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
"This is why you don't let a guy like DJ Hackett go when when you could have kept him for almost nothing."

Almost nothing? Right. DJ was packing his bags a year ago w/ no intention of coming back. Nice player but not reliable to dress up.
RichmondHawk @ 11:45 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Marcus Tubbs also got released.
bigmike04 @ 11:47 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
So he wont be back until against New york giants? If you count the bye week that 8 week. 6 weeks mean he might be back against 1st time we play the rams.

Thought are you hawks going to put him on PUP?
pawleec @ 11:47 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Hackett ALREADY hurt in Carolina.......high ankle, real surprise
c_hawkbob @ 11:48 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Now this is too bad, Bobby has always been Matt's security blanket. Now we need more than just one of our young prospects to step up.
RichmondHawk @ 11:51 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
About Hackett, you're waaaaaaaaaaay off. Do some research before bagging Ruskell on that one:

"D.J. Hackett (toe) has had a hard time staying healthy in Panthers camp.

We all know Hackett can produce when he gets a chance, but he's simply not a good bet for 16 games. He's spent a lot of time on the bike at camp before being carted off Wednesday morning with a foot/ankle injury. Hackett remains in line to start the first two games with Steve Smith suspended."

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?id=2642&sport=NFL

I've been following Hackett closely this off-season and he's having a multitude of recurring injuries that kept him out last year. Its a case of Ruskell possibly knowing something we don't. The kid is not worth paying decent money because he could be injury prone. Yes Hackett is a good reciever but you don't pay players to play 1/2 the games.
ChromeCW @ 11:51 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
pawlec,

I actually read it was Toe injury and Hackett is day to day - but you took the words right out of his mouth - I think if he'd been reliably healthy that he may have been re-signed.

The GOOD news is while every game of the season is important, and that the Bills won't be easy it looks like the lighter part of our schedule is up until the Giants game....so this gives the young guys additional time to show themselves off. Hopefully we can get Branch back as well.
mister andersen @ 11:53 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Okay Maybe not Chris Henry, but it looks like the following guys are still available:

Eric Moulds
David Givens
Keenan McCardell
Eric Parker
Doug Gabriel
Peerless Price
Terry Glenn

Make a move Ruskell!!! We can't have 2 rookies in our 3 WR sets!!!!

tillman @ 11:53 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
It's not the end of the world. It's the easiest receiver position to plug in and a tight end that can catch will help take away some of the emphasis.
ElPerroGrandeIII @ 11:55 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
D.J. Hackett ... OVER-RATED!

Bobby Engram ... UNDER-RATED ... watch the Hawks struggle big time on offense until he comes back ...
jammer @ 12:04 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Our younger guys really need to step up now.

I'll bet Ruskell doesn't bring in an older washed-up WR.

Sure hope Bobby is back soon!
Osiris33 @ 12:05 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
http://seahawkboys.blogspot.com/
You don't need Hackett to play all 16 games right now, you just need him to play the 6-8 Bobby will be out.

And the $2 mil he signed for is peanuts.

He stated several times he would have been glad to come back here. Ruskell showed no interest.

Ask Matt Hasselbeck if he'd rather have DJ Hackett than Logan Payne right now...

Time to dust off those Seneca in the slot plays I guess.
pdway @ 12:06 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Puts more pressure on Matt that's for sure. Engram is a key guy in our offense; the only known-quantity, reliable receiver we have. Hackett was injury-prone it's true, but I would have signed him for that relatively low price. Doesn't matter now though.

The young guys really need to come through. Outside of us fans that know, it's sure going to be a pretty anonymous group lining up around Hass on offense.
antediluvian @ 12:06 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Yeah, it's all Ruskell's fault for not keeping Hacket....yeah the WR that matched Pork Chop, injury for injury. And guess what....check the Carolina situation he's INJURED again.

Yeah, we really needed to keep Hackett.
moeflo @ 12:08 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
This is the ONE thing I hoped wouldn't happen.. and it did.
swab @ 12:08 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Can't wait to watch Hasselbeck sit back and wait for someone to get open while Burleson runs the wrong routes and the young guys get jammed up at the line of scrimmage. Should be fun.
badicalturboradness @ 12:13 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Stupid Ruskell! How come our GM can't see the future?!?!?! It's his fault Bobby got injured! In the words of Lucky Brown and the Funk Revolution "Deal with it!" Someone will step up! Matty Hass is still a pro-bowler! Our running game looked half way to competent! The sky is not falling.
seaturkeys @ 12:15 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I'm glad our running backs can catch!
godtomsatan @ 12:17 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I love the negativity, you people are all awesome!!!

Fact of the matter is that we open @ Buffalo, and then home vs. the Niners and the Rams before the bye week. Worst case scenario is 2-1 anyway, whether Engram plays or not.

This is another opportunity for Burleson to step up. And another opportunity for one of the younger players to get involved. I have a feeling someone like Jordan Kent was going to be a Jurevicius-esque red zone target for Hasselbeck this year anyway, so forgive me if I don't get extremely panicky about this.
Dukeshire @ 12:20 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
The only thing worse than Engram getting hurt is reading all these crisis posts. Settle down. It is one of the deepest positions on the team, very young, yes but that doesn't mean you bring in criminals (Henry) off the street. As for Hackett, what good is keeping someone who can't stay on the field? Good when healthy, but...
BobbyK @ 12:26 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
If our o-line performs well (like I expect them to) AND like the first unit did in Minnesota...

WE ARE GOING TO BE FINE!!!

Matt is a stud! He will be able to find our young and talented WRs!

We crab about young and inexperienced... but I don't know how in the heck you go out and get experience if nobody ever wants to give you a chance to get experience.

Burleson is going to be okay. O-B-won-kenobie will be okay. Taylor will be okay. I'm really excited for Payne's ribs to get better, because he's going to be a real solid guy. Maybe Matt will just have to hit an unpolished Kent with some bombs... And with Jeb and Carlson added to TE, and Jones/Morris sharing RB duties, that's also going to take pressure off of the WRs in the passing game.

The sky is NOT falling and this team will be making a deap push in the play-offs which hopefully ends with a Super Bow WIN! Nothing that has happened so far is changing those aspirations (unless we lose our QB for the season, then we're done).
RichmondHawk @ 12:27 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
"Our younger guys really need to step up now."

That is easier said than done. Its great that they look good in practice, training camp, etc. But its a whole different story when you're lined up against Charles
Woodson, etc. Good luck with that.

I'd love for Taylor and Obo to take the next step but have a looooooooooonng waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy to go.
airbags @ 12:27 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email

godtomsatan: i echo your sentiment. when we lost djack and bobby in 2005, we had several other guys step right on up, and it took referees to take us down!

right now, i choose to remain optimistic.

RichmondHawk @ 12:29 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Well anyways Holmy will work around it. A good stop-gap solution is to line-up Putzier/Carlson in the slot on some plays.

Ummm...okay we're screwed.

Did someway say trade for Steve Smith earlier?

wedlock @ 12:32 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Maybe it's time ramp up Frye as the back up QB and plug in Seneca.
seafanalways @ 12:35 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
i seem to remember a couple of years ago when both djack and bobby were injured...how did we do that year??? oh ya, i think we went to the SUPERBOWL!! with number 8 under center, the WR position is not that pressing...

swab, you are such a moron, and ALWAYS complain, you are a clueless pathetic individual, and i almost feel sorry for your existence
RichmondHawk @ 12:39 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Naw Seneca proved he needs to stay at QB. No need to start shooting ourselves in the foot now.

As the pre-season winds down the possibility of veteran WR's getting cut or traded can happen. Ruskell needs to keep in touch with the GB and Washington FO.
BrianBlades @ 12:39 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I sure did not like sending Engram over the middle several times during the first preseason game given his age...but oh well, that's preseason.

I don't think that panicking and getting a waived veteran is the answer. Lots of teams go with young guys/unhailed at receiver - look at Green Bay last year, the Pats for the last decade...

This is on Matt. He's the wily veteran and he needs to hook up with these guys sooner rather than later. Engram has been the security blanket, but probowl QB's make it work with ALL their receivers.

Maybe those big tight ends will be the answer, but I don't believe that signing played-out veterans is the answer.
STTBM @ 12:46 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
While it truly sucks canal water that Engram is hurt, the Hawks will be fine. Hasselbeck needs to learn to pass the ball to the most open reciever, not rely utterly on the one guy he trusts. Now he will have to. One of Hasselbecks weaknesses is that when things arent going well, he tends to not go through his reads and checkdowns correctly, he stares down his main reciever, and then goes for his security blanket...which leads to bad things.

This is a chance for Nate Burleson to become the reciever he seems to think he is. Step up or shut up, Mr. Six-year-vet.

And it will allow the Hawks to keep ALL the young guys, Taylor, Kent, Payne, and Obiwan, while putting Shelton and Bumpus on the Practice Squad. It will be ok.

Payne is a stud, and its just too bad that DD Lewis cracked his rib like a total assclown while trying to make the team. You can bet coaches reamed him a new one, as Payne is much more valuable to the team than an aging backup linebacker...

Payne and Taylor and Obiwan are ready to play, and Kent is making strides. He will be our first true deep threat since Galloway. And we have three big fullback-size RB's, and three quick smaller RB's to run the rock right down everyone's throats...so it will be ok.

Still, Hawk football without Engram is always a little sad.
earther @ 12:47 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
godtomsatan: "I love the negativity, you people are all awesome!!!"

Yeah but you have to admit that all these injury reports are a tad disconcerting don't you. It seems to me that the Seahawks have had a difficult time keeping their starters on the field the past few years and now they seem to be dropping like flies even in the pre-season.
hawk9680 @ 12:47 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I say Glenn.
STTBM @ 12:57 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
WHy does everyone suddenly want to bring in some tired old veteran WR who doesnt even know our system?! Especially since we have 6 young WR who are playing and practicing very very well, who all know our system?

That whole list of WR's is a bunch of slow, over-the-hill losers who are headed to the glue factory.

We will be fine with the WR's we have. Wait and see...

Besides, werent most of you talking about how great Burleson is, and how many touchdowns he's gonna get?! Well, now he's bound to have even more chances to live up to his potential.
chuck_easton @ 13:01 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Reality check here. The report says that Engram will miss 6 to 8 weeks. As I look at my calendar on my desk I see that we are 4 weeks away from the September 7 season opener.

So, Bobby will miss the first 3 to 4 ( fifth week of the season is a bye week)games and is back for the final 12 to 13 plus the playoffs.

But, by all means go out and sign a Vet that has no clue how this offense works and move one of the young guys that KNOW the system to the PS or onto another team for those 3 to 4 weeks. Yeah right.

Norseman @ 13:02 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
godtomsatan:

Agreed. Time for Nate to step up, which I think he will do. Nonetheless, losing Engram hurts...heck maybe we can just run the ball? ;-)
stormshadow @ 13:03 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
While this certainly sucks, I don't see why the team would even consider bringing in some other washed up veteran that couldn't make an NFL squad this summer, and who would have no knowledge of our system.

Remember, Branch was a very good WR when he came here, and he and Matt struggled to develop a rapport and be in sync that season, until he had a full off-season of preparation.

We've carried and developed all of these young guys for a reason....the team believes they help this team and be productive in this system. I'd much rather go with these guys that Matt has been throwing to all off season...at least they should know the offense.

Now it is just time for them to step up. I mean, who were Robert Brooks or Antonio Freeman before they got a chance to start in Holmy's system??? Give them a chance.
thedude @ 13:03 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
everyone just needs to chilllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.

this is what determines great quarterbacks, when they can make good receivers look great. matt will be fine and it actually may be a blessing in disguise...brady has been doing it for years. its time to sack up so please, can everyone stop crying!
chuck_easton @ 13:23 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
And for those that say this is why the team should have re-signed Hackett as stated before Hackett has already missed the Panther's 1st pre-season game due to injury, he's only practicing 1 out of every two-a-day practices when he DOES practice, and the reporters in Carolina are starting to speculate that he may need surgury to repair his toe. So far this pre-season Hackett has missed time due to a knee problem, an ankle (stop me if you've heard this before) injury, and now what is being thought to be serious turf toe.

But hey, lets add a third injured WR to the team!
reshumate @ 13:52 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Some of you people are misinformed or easily panicked types. Taylor and Obo are about to enter their 3rd seasons in the WCO. Branch is probably going to at least suit up Week 1, and be ready to roll by Week 2. You don't go picking up some washed up WR off the wire who hasn't even played in a WCO.

Personally, I hope that Matt and these other WRs develop some rapport. There will be life after Engram. I almost guarantee he is not a Seahawk next season.
thedude @ 14:29 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
chuck_easton: stop. hackett's status has been posted at least 5 times above...
badcat63 @ 14:30 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Bobby being out till after the bye week is bad, never good. It isn't fatal to the Team. In the Minn. game I believe we used something like 9 - 11 pass catchers (WR, TE, RB) for completions. WCO has never been about primetime receivers but in distributing the ball and being efficient passing and judicious running.

If we have the tools, and I think we might, to REALLY use a FB and RB in the WCO passing game (think Tom Rathman, Roger Craig, Ricky Waters etc.) then we will pick up some of the slack. We also may have 1 - 2 TE's that can do the job in a WCO (think Bret Jones etc.) and block and catch. An advantage (?) to younger receivers may be that they will block downfield on running plays and passing plays and open up the longer runs. The D also needs to get us the ball and get the other O off the field on 3rd down.

Bobby will be missed but he will be back. The FB, RB, TE groups need to pick it up. The young WR's get their wish - a shot to see what they can do in game situations. Every team has injuries to important players and knowing B.E. will be back is good. Don't panic and don't push too hard (Matt) and we'll be fine.

GO SEAHAWKS
mister andersen @ 15:21 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Been drinking Seahawks blue cool-aide? We have a practice squad stud and a basketball coaches' son as our #3 and #4 recievers....and our #2 has 12 careeer catches!!!!

Branch isn't gonna be 100% 6 months after an ACL tear ....Bobby is gone for 3-4 weeks.

They gotta make a deal or find an FA to fill in the GAPING HOLE behind Burleson.
nighthawk2 @ 16:01 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
What I've read of Hackett's injury, it's neither a toe (as first thought, and they didn't consider that to be serious) nor the dreaded "high ankle sprain", it's some sort of a foot problem. The Panthers are calling it a "setback". Apparently the Panther fans are not enamored with D.J. either.

http://blogs.charlotte.com/panthers/2008/08/hacketts-had-a.html

In regards to Engram, I'd rather see us stick with the young guys we have than bring in another re-tread. Especially an older guy like Glenn. Engram is supposed to be back by week 5 (game 4) so I don't see any reason to go outside for a receiver. I still hope Branch doesn't come back early for a couple of reasons, one-more time to heal that knee surgery and two-he won't have had much if any training camp and that seems to be a factor in guys getting injured early.
Hawkfan1951 @ 16:17 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
As each Team cuts down to their final 53 man roster, you will see trades/pickups from many teams, including the Seahawks. These will be quality players, remember the "80% Rule." If a rookie plays at 80% of a Vet, keep the rookie. A one year contract shouldn't hurt the salary cap.

There will be quality WR's available that can hold the fort until Engram and Branch are back.

Keep the faith!!

GO HAWKS!!!
