Seahawks Insider

The Seahawks waived defensive lineman Marcus Tubbs today, effectively ending his career as a Seahawk.

Mike Holmgren said the former first-round pick kept having setbacks in his rehabilitation from knee surgery and that they decided he just wasn't going to be able to make it, thus making him a free agent. He worked out against the sled in the past few days, his knee swelled up and the team decided to let him go after he failed his physical. Though Holmgren said there is a chance he comes back if he gets healthy, that does not seem like a likely scenario.

That's really too bad. I wasn't expecting anything out of him this year, but I held out a little hope that he would be able to come back at some point.

Is there a reason they did this now and not waited til later? Didn't they have til the 6th week of the season to get him off the PUP list?
swab @ 11:41 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
What a complete waste. We had better never spend a 1st round pick on a guy with injury history and crap work ethic.
bigmike04 @ 11:44 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I told you all that this guy was waste of pick aqnd hawks were stupid enough to even draft a guy with a history of being injured in college.

Nah nah nah nah nah hey hey hey goodbye.
c_hawkbob @ 11:45 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Tubbs' work ethic was never an issue, it's those balsa wood knees ... that and Howard Green looking like the real deal all the sudden.
jammer @ 11:46 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
He played exceptionally well when he was healthy but that wasn't often enough.

Good Luck Marcus!

What a shame. Tubbs was a huge difference maker when he was healthy. He probably needs aat least another year before he'll be ready to take one last shot.

Swab - You're an idiot. Tubbs had no injury history and was a considered a quality character coming out of college.
jammer @ 11:47 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I wonder if Womack has gotten the message this sends?
tillman @ 11:50 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
This is a "message" move. Memo to half the team sitting on the sidelines: Want to be on this team or searching for roster spot around the league?

I love the fact they cut bait now (on a former 1st rounder no less) than waited until 5th or 6th week of the season.
pawleec @ 11:59 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
SWAB, the Hawks loved this guy because he did everything possible to rehab his knees......everyone was rooting for him. It's over and it sucks, for you to label with a crap work ethic is classless.
swab @ 12:03 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Osiris you are an idiot. Go back and look. He had questionable work ethic, accused of taking plays off in colleg and weight issues. We didnt bother to trade up for Vince Wilfork and settled for Tubbs which now we are paying for.
antediluvian @ 12:04 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Love that people with absolutely NO personal knowledge of the player or the coaches can even dream about questioning his work ethic.

Clueless and classless.
kurtisballard @ 12:06 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
waste of a pick?

seahawks don't make the superbowl without tubbs in '05.

that's more worthwhile than most 1st round picks if you asked me.
RichmondHawk @ 12:08 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
For those who way Tubbs was a waste of space blah, blah, blah. Well at least he game us some solid games. Chris McIntosh was a 1st rounder like Tubbs and gave us very little but I've never heard anyone bad-mouth that guy.
RichmondHawk @ 12:10 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Crap work ethic?

Its funny, fans always assume that a guy that weighs 320lbs is fat and lazy.
RichmondHawk @ 12:15 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
"Nah nah nah nah nah hey hey hey goodbye."

Its a sad for the Hawks because essentially we could've gotten more out of Tubbs if it weren't for the injuries. I just don't get the "in your face" stuff. Its like shooting yourself in the foot.
BobbyK @ 12:15 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I second what kurtisballard said... we don't go to the Super Bowl if we didn't have him that year... I would have liked for him to be a Hawk for 10 years, but it didn't work out but he was a big reason we have at least one Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
klm008 @ 12:21 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Dang! Bobby out 8-10 weeks and now Tubbs cut loose - not a good day. 9ers just picked up T.Spikes and cut B.Moore - wonder why Eagles cut Spikes?
RichmondHawk @ 12:44 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
There's a possibility he could still come back.

"Tubbs is free to sign with any team, but Holmgren said he would like Tubbs to rejoin the Seahawks once his knee is better."

Swab--Vince Wilfork is a dirty player, and an all-around assclown, no matter his talent. You think maybe Ruskell and company knew this?! Duh.

We went to the Super Bowl in large part due to Tubbs badass work ethic and play. And no one rehabbed as hard as Tubbs. Sounds like his work ethic was fine to me.

Injuries happen, and sometimes there is no coming back from them. Tubbs still has an outside shot, if some other team is willing to pay him to rehab, or if he ever heals up and stays in shape, the Hawks will be glad to bring him back. They just cant afford to keep him around, taking up a roster spot when he might not play again. Two years is long enough...
RichmondHawk @ 13:00 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Actually Wilfork was drafted before Ruskell's tenure. But yeah if he had a history "robo cop" would've been all over it.
williambryan @ 13:01 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Wilfork is a dirty player and is not a what a seahawks is all about. Tubbs has been great for us when he is healthy and great off the field too. He is just unlucky.

And Ruskell was not part of the team when we drafted Tubbs, That was Holmgrens pick.

It is just sad. It was clear when he was healthy that he could have been one of the best we have seen.
thedude @ 13:09 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
all of you who bad mouth a player who has a)helped us get to the big game and b)been working his ass off to get healthy, are total dousch bags...you think he wants to be injured and not play? grow up, and big mike, learn to freakin spell.
badcat63 @ 13:58 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Never wish ill feelings on a player like Tubbs who helped us when his body allowed and did all he was asked when in rehab. I said months go I hoped Tubbs would come back well but doubted he could, just stating the facts. Big men with two knee injuries don't have a history of recovering to full strength. But while he was in there he did as much as possible to help us especially in in 2005. Don't bad mouth an injured good player just because you are an idiot and don't value his contribution.

I am sorry to see Tubbs go and wish him all the best.

GO SEAHAWKS
DJammmer @ 14:15 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Good luck to Tubbs. Holmy said he could make it back to the team, but I'm not sure I see that happening. Sure would be nice to have him for a playoff run if he is healthy.

Green looked impressive Fri. Between him and Mebane, hopefully we'll be O.K.

Thanks for '05 Tubbs!
MrBenson @ 15:46 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Swab - nobody should have called you a name, but I have to disagree with you. Tubbs had no injury history coming out of college, and since he's been hurt, by all accounts he's been busting his tail off trying to prove he was worth a first-round pick. It's sad but injuries can happen to anyone in this game.
nighthawk2 @ 16:18 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Spencer is a waste of a 1st round pick. Tubbs had injury problems his career, and if memory serves, in college. But he has no problem with a work ethic, and he missed camp early in his rookie season because his mother was terminally ill. He is not a "bust" any more than Chris MacIntosh was, whose career was also derailed by an injury that could not be corrected (bone spurs in his neck if I recall correctly). I have said before that I wish we'd taken Steven Jackson over Tubbs, let Alexander go in free agency after the 05 season and given his insane contract money to Hutchinson. However I recognize the Catch-22 in that, if we had, then we woudln't have had Tubbs presence blocking up the middle of the run D that was so important in helping us get to the Super Bowl in that 2005 season. With all his injuries, I appreciate his contributions to our success, and I'm doubtful we get to the Big Game without him that year. I've said for some time that I was convinced he wouldn't be on the roster for the start of the 08 season, that he wouldn't survive training camp. I don't feel happy to be right about it, just seemed obvious that the surgeries finished his career. If we only had one good season from him, it was the greatest season in team history, and I thank him for that.
skystyler @ 18:07 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I cant help but feel Tubb's is a victim of bad injury management by the Seahawk's medical staff. He had what, 2 recos and the stress fracture surgery on his kneecap in quick succession? Clearly he needed more time to recover than they gave him from each of these.
earther @ 18:36 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email

skystyler: " He had what, 2 recos and the stress fracture surgery on his kneecap in quick succession? Clearly he needed more time to recover than they gave him from each of these."

Yeah, well that's football, isn't it? Anyway, that sort of sounds like what Holmgren was saying in his usual, round about way. He needs a year of nothing but R&R and then, if staying off of it heals it all up, he can think about getting back into shape and trying a comeback. As it is, it sounds like just the act of keeping in condition is aggravating the healing process.
Stevo @ 21:57 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
What a shame. In 2005, Tubbs was the best DT the Seahawks had since Tez.

As far as his work ethic? The guy was totally committed to rehab two offseasons in a row, came back from microfracture knees surgery way ahead of schedule last year, and came to camp in shape despite two surgeries. He has shown a great work ethic. My guess is he has probably been too aggressive in his rehab and needs to rest to heal 100%

But no one can predict what will happen to tendons in the knees of a 320 lb man during a football career. Most big men don't last too long in the NFL.

I still think Tubbs will be back at some point in the future. He is not one to give up. Unfortunately, there a lot of other teams that need a DT even more than the Seahawks do and he is likely to get signed elsewhere by a team in need. I just hope that next time we see him he isn't playing for the Cardinals or Rams or 49ers.
mquinn73 @ 03:59 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
For everybody questioning the 'hawks draft strategy in recent years [Tubbs, Spencer, MacIntosh, etc.], nearly every team in the NFL has made similar 'mistakes' in recent years.

Just be thankful you're not a fan of Detroit [Charlie Rogers & Mike Williams] or Cinci [Ki-Jana Carter, Akili Smith, Chris Perry], or the Texans [David Carr & Jason Babin], or the Browns [Tim Couch, Courtney Brown], or the Bears [Cedric Benson, David Terrell], or the 49ers [Alex Smith, Rashaun Woods] and so on....

Only the Patriots stand out as an organisation that consistently picks well in the 1st round of the draft in recent years...

At least Seattle have made up for some poor 1st round picks by selecting future stars in the lower rounds.
klm008 @ 15:33 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
Would it be permissible for Tubbs to rehab at the Hawks VMAC over the season?
