OK, I double-checked with the Seahawks and Bobby Engram cannot be placed on the physically unable to perform list. The player would have had to be placed on the PUP before camp started (like Tubbs, Branch or Plackemeier) in order to be eligible for the PUP list.

What this means is that somebody like Justin Forsett or David Hawthorne is going to lose a roster spot because there will be a dead spot -- and possibly two with Branch -- on the roster until one or both of those guys get back. It does bode well for Jordan Kent or Michael Bumpus. Holmgren revised his earlier calculations of 11 RBs/WRs, saying they would have to carry more WRs. Forsett's best option was to squeeze in under the wire as a special teamer.

Also, I forgot to mention this earlier, but Holmgren said that there is a chance that Steve Vallos is the opening day center. He said Chris Spencer's back is not even allowing him to tie his shoes right now, and he needs some valuable practice time to get in sync with teammates. Obviously, with less than three weeks left before the start, his time is dwindling.

This is going to be one heck of a final season Holmgren!
m_b @ 14:44 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Frank - what is Holmgren's reaction to all the injuries? As I watch the Cowboys camp on HBO, I wonder if we work our guys too hard. Cowboys call their training camp "Camp Cupcake". Face it, we should be going easy on our guys during camp as we have essentially three, relatively easy games to start the season.

so what exactly is Spencer's injury then???? Is it a muscle pull..strain...or possibly something worse??? Has the team said anything about this, or are they just going with "it's a hurt back...that's all" routine?
hawk9680 @ 14:53 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Yeah that's what I thought. Thanks for the clearing up!
shams @ 15:03 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Hawthorne looked great and I'd love to see him make the squad, but we have to keep Forsett. CUT DUCKETT.
jibo1 @ 15:08 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
With Tubbs being let go.What does that do to the DT's on the edge? Green,Tripplet, can't think of the third guy.If you think that bill's game is going to ber easy you better rethink things.
I'm going to get yelled at for this question.Would David Hawthorne work at safty? He's not going to make it at LB theres to many in front of him.If he stays at LB he'll go on ST an stay there an play a little.Thats not useing him fullie. If he could make it at safty he would start in a couple of years maybe three.

I re-watched the 1st two posessions against the vikings; Vallos on two ocassions did get shoved into the backfield. He also seemed to get help from Wahle on most downs.

To his credit he did also stand up his guy pretty good on a run play though and his exchanges with the QB seemed fine.

I REALLY want Vallos to work out. Let's watch his blocking this week.
excile @ 15:14 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Hawthorne could very well start this year the way the injury bug has struck. Next year is a contract year for Leroy Hill as well.
STTBM @ 15:29 - Monday, August 11th, 2008
Spencer is looking like a first round bust. The guy wasnt getting it done anyway. Lets hope Vallos works out. Spencer may end up getting cut...though IR is more likely.

Sims better watch out too. His ass "got blowed up" on a bunch of plays in the Vikes game. Ray Willis and Wrotto are breathing down your neck, baby!
RichmondHawk @ 15:40 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I think Vallos mostly went up against Fred Evans for the most of the 1st quarter. He might've had to lock up with Kevin Williams. He did an admirable job considering his experience but getting blown back shows he might not have the power needed. Spencer's the guy we need to get in there if only.... A regular season will be tougher for the likes of Vallos and Sims because teams will target them by running stunts etc. Vallos might've gotten help from Wahle. But teams will put a guy on Wahle then what is Vallos going to do? Sims is the other guy who might look good in pre-season but come regular season it will be different story. Even in the Minny game I noticed he pulled his infamous "dog chasing tail" trick.
hawkdawg @ 15:59 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Watching Vallos struggle valiantly, sometimes bending almost in two, to neutralize the Viking DTs made one thing, at least, very clear to me: you REALLY don't want a bad lower back as a center.

We are going into the season with a 7th round draft choice who has never played the position until last year on the practice squad as our starting center. If you are the praying type for football, pray.
chuck_easton @ 16:30 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
jibo1,

What do you mean there are too many LB's in front of Hawthorne? The team traditionally keeps 6 or 7 LB's.

Let's do the math: Lofa, Peterson, Hill, DD. Lewis, Laury.

OK now add 1 for each of those names. How many do you get? 5! So Hawthorne is 6 or at worst 7 if Herring gets healthy. Nobody else in front of him at all.
fuzzybear @ 16:45 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I am with "shams" at #5, We cannot lose Forsett. There is too much upside not to mention the current impact ability. Worse case, cut Duckett. Sorry. We have two big bodies for the backfield as it is with Weaver and Schmidt. Do we really need a 3rd?
Doc_Bucket @ 17:35 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Injuries are already shaping this into a woulda coilda shoulda year. Still hoping for the best tho.
earther @ 18:02 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
Well, LeCharles Bentley is still a UFA I think. He hasn't started in a couple of years and he turned out to be a big waste of money for the Browns, but he is an experienced center.
moo @ 19:58 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
I am not a Chris Spncer fan. Be curious to see how Vallos does the next couple weeks.

The exchange problems with Frye today are not a good sign though....
williambryan @ 20:05 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
"camp cupcake" has resulted in zero playoff wins for the cowboys. camp Holmgren has resulted in 4straight division titles.

Looks we burned a first round pick on a bust in Spencer. everybody says he has the talent, but he's not smart enough to make the line calls after three years and can't stay healthy.

"Mr. Bently? This is Mr. Ruskell. What kind of shape are you in?"
bigmike04 @ 22:17 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
you got also will herring at LB dont forget.

Thought if pup not option for engram than release him than sign him again. It not like anyone will pick up an injured player that cannot be place on PUP and isnt that far of injury to be put on IR.

If Justin F has any chance to make roster it at the 3rd string RB.
goneshootin @ 22:33 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
bigmike04 - nice thought, but you can't release an injured player. you have to honor his contract, which means: (1) keeping no active roster, or (2) placing on IR, which puts him out for the year.
goneshootin @ 22:35 - Monday, August 11th, 2008 Email
bigmike04 - and when I write "injured", I mean a player who started camp healthy, and then was injured. With Tubbs, he was on the PUP and needed to pass a physical to become active. If player doesn't pass the physical, he can be released.
bigmike04 @ 01:25 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
you do know their is such no thing as honor contract in NFL. NFL Contract means that they can release you and dont have to owe you much on rest of your salary and in bobby engram case since he been whinning and complaining about his contract than release him than when he get healthy than hawks can give him new contract to which he likes.

Their no such thing as Guarnteed contract in NFL get that through your brain. Only contract that you have to honor are Baseball players and NBA players.
mquinn73 @ 03:14 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
Vallos had a satisfactory performance against the Vikings but there is no way that I think we can go into the regular season with him as our starting center. He might have the physical attributes but he has no significant experience of playing in such a key position.

I'm not giving up on Spencer and I think the team should continue to develop Vallos in that position [perhaps he is the long-term answer?] but right now, the top priority should be to sign a veteran center of proven quality - either by trade or a free-agent.
TechWorlds @ 05:21 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
In this case you are wrong bigmike04. Engram got hurt during a game. They cant just cut him and not owe him any money. Do your research.
highwatermark @ 06:46 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
Vallos was playing against a "vanilla" defense without one of the starting DTs. And he needed help to do it. If Spencer is even marginally healthy, he is the better option at C. I admire Vallos for stepping in and doing a better job than anyone expected, but to go from there to "Hey, lets dump Spencer and start Vallos!" is a huge leap.
bigmike04 @ 15:42 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
Well why not cut him but pay him and than bring him back with better contract that suites him. I mean if we keep him we are than screw as we are going to lose a guy like David H or Justin F because of the report going out that he doing good and their will be a team who might need help at RB and I dont want to lose him.

bigmike04 @ 15:46 - Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 Email
What about other position that might need extra dept like Center as we dont know when spencer is coming back and DL if we will keep cooper or tripplet or what about depts at other position someone will suffer because of engram injury.
goneshootin @ 15:23 - Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 Email
bigmike - did you not understand my post? there ARE guaranteed contracts for the year in play. meaning, if a back like alexander has 3 years left on a contract, but gets hurt during training, 1 year of the contract is guaranteed. YOU CAN'T CUT A PLAYER WHO'S INJURED? remember the cast on alexandar's hand? so get that through your head. in engram's case, he only has 1 year left on his contract. IF he can't come back this year (hypothetically) he WOULD RECEIVE his full contract payment. understand?
goneshootin @ 15:27 - Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 Email
bigmike - read the rest of your posts... you're clueless. when people say there aren't "guaranteed contracts" in the nfl, they're referring to the life of the contract. in essence, all contracts are year-to-year. so, if a player isn't injured, you can release him... and resign him if he clears waivers and chooses to come back for less money. but this is NOT the case with engram; he's injured. AGAIN... YOU CAN'T RELEASE AN INJURED PLAYER. Understand?
