This is the last real practice at the facility in Kirkland before the team moves to Renton on Monday. They have one more practice this afternoon and then a substitution practice tomorrow morning, and then they are out of here.

There were a bunch of people back at this practice, including Patrick Kerney, Matt Hasselbeck, Leonard Weaver, Sean Locklear and Josh Wilson, who never really left but had a scare yesterday. Hasselbeck's participation was limited, and he is not likely to play this weekend, but Mike Holmgren said it is nothing to be concerned about. Kerney will not play this weekend but said he hopes to be suited up on Monday morning and wants to play the final two preseason games.

[More:]

Hasselbeck's dad, Don, attended the practice.

During special teams drills, rookie Brandon Coutu got an earful for kicking a kickoff out of bounds. Coutu did not have a good day. During field goals, he failed to get one above the crossbar, and he missed on another. Mare may have missed one, though it was tough to tell from our angle.

During 11-on-11 drills, Nate Burleson beat Kelly Jennings deep but dropped the pass. That was the only time I saw a WR beat the secondary deep. It made me wonder if the defensive backs know the plays so well that they aren't going to let anybody get behind them, or the Seahawks have a dearth of wideouts who can stretch the defense. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Jordan Kent had a tough practice, dropping two passes within a few minutes of each other. Right tackle Kyle Williams also jumped up before the ball was snapped, which always makes Holmgren happy.

Charlie Frye actually looked pretty good during the hurry-up offense, finding a number of receivers as the offense moved the ball downfield. The first drive ended with Julius Jones going up the middle for a score, though since the practice was in helmets and shorts he did not get hit, which may have changed things.

Frye also ran the second unit in the hurry-up and completed four straight passes before Holmgren ended practice.

After, he said no decision has been made on if Frye will start, which means he doesn't want to say. He said he is not really concerned about the injuries other than those to Engram and Spencer. He kind of made light of them, in fact, saying that with all the MRI equipment, they invariably find injuries and put it in the players' head that they are injured. Then it gets close to game day and all of a sudden they are healed. He didn't say there had been any real movement on Spencer's injury.

He said the vets should get a little more time this week, as they have done in the past. He said Julius Jones will start this week, and Mo Morris is likely to start again next week. For all you fantasy folks, he said the flanker spot in this offense should get the most catches.

Glad to hear Hasselbeck is back, even if it was limited practice. Better than nothing. I really hope Frye starts this saturday. We didn't really get to see anything from him that last preseason game and he was a guy I was looking forward to seeing. Just to see what he could do.
NickLicatasucks @ 12:37 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
I'm done with Chris Spencer. That guy needs to go. We have nobody who can stretch the defense, even with Branch healthy. We are screwed there. I'm feeling quite pessimistic today. Hopefully our defense is awesome so that we can win a few games this year.

How's Pork Chop looking in practice?
Heraclitus @ 13:24 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
Frank, if you've got time I have a question about the defensive ends. Assuming that Kerney and Jackson remain the starters and Tapp is a lock for a spot in the rotation, that leaves Babin and Atkins to be accounted for (I'm discounting both Cooper and Tafisi at this point, I suppose--let me know if that's a mistake). In the first preseason game we all got to see Babin make his presence felt, so if he continues to perform where does that leave Atkins? Judging from what you've seen at practice, who appears to be in line for the fourth spot on the DE rotation?

Gooey? ... Seriously, is that supposed to be an inside joke or something?
airbags @ 13:58 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email

well, let's think about this: when has chop NOT looked "gooey"?

dcbeeh @ 14:26 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
lmao: Isn't that an Oregon team? the Gooey Ducks.

niclicata--Kent and Taylor can stretch defenses just fine. Kent is still raw, and Taylor body catches. But Taylor is poised to become a star, he just needs a little technique work, and Kent is showing week to week that he belongs in the NFL. Meanwhile, Bumpus is something we havent had since Brian Blades was young--a natural slot reciever who is FAST. No to mention Obomanu, who though not fast, is looking good, and Payne, who is one tough SOB. And there's the injured guys and Burleson, the worlds most frustrating talent. So I think we will be just fine at WR this year. All the young guys need is playing time. By week 6, we will be kicking ass and taking names...I think Hass will throw for 4,000 yards this year. Were gonna average 27 points a game this year...

Frank, do you know if the pracitices at the new facility will be open to the public after the monday move?
mister andersen @ 15:27 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
I love you guys think these rookies are gonna be great this year. Taylor poised to be a star? Bumpus is Michael Blades?

2 RECIEVERS IN THE LAST 10 YEARS HAD 1,000 YARDS IN THEIR ROOKIE SEASONS

We NEED to go get a Vet WR in a trade or at worst pick up some value when teams start cutting guys.
Frank Hughes @ 16:30 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
Heraclitis,

Atkins is ahead of Babin, at least when they go into the rotations. He is always ahead of him -- and he comes more cheaply, and he is a draft pick of Ruskell's.

curlydog, VMAC not open to public. That will come next season.
reshumate @ 16:38 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
Taylor is not a rookie. As the starting flanker now, he will see a lot of balls thrown his way. Time for him to fulfill his potential.

I also didn't realize Engram is a defense stretcher. Neither is Branch. Worry more about the center situation. WRs will be okay. Holmgren is a genius when it comes to throwing the ball around. These guys don't drop it, they just have to be open sometimes.
mister andersen @ 16:45 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
How many career catches does Taylor have? Oh yeah....ZERO.

He's a rookie, I don't care when he was drafted.
seafanalways @ 20:56 - Thursday, August 14th, 2008 Email
actually mister anderson, taylor has 5 catches...lol. anyways, who the hell expects ANY receiver in this offense to get 1000 yds!? we dont need that, we just need guys to catch the ball when its thrown to them. so just because taylor or the young guys dont have much playin time, we should write them off for the season!? LMFAO!!!

im so sick of stupid people...next time anderson, dont comment

STTBM - "Bumpus is something we haven't had since Brian Blades was young"... for a second there I thought that you were seriously comparing Michael Bumpus to Brian Blades.... then when I read "Hass will throw for 4,000 yards this year. We're gonna average 27 points a game this year"... I knew that you were either kidding or high or both...

Frank - "made me wonder if the defensive backs know the plays so well that they aren't going to let anybody get behind them, or the Seahawks have a dearth of wideouts who can stretch the defense. I guess we'll find out soon enough".... absolutely, 100% correct. We don't know & I'd be pretty confident that even Holmgren doesn't know... we all hope it is the former scenario.

reshumate @ 06:52 - Friday, August 15th, 2008 Email
There will always be doubters. I think it would be stupid to bring in a vet. Who are you going to cut? The Hawks have to keep Branch and Engram on the roster because both will be ready by Week 4 at the latest.

I challenge any of you to name a WR available who can step in and contribute in a WCO predicated on timing and rhythm.
chuck_easton @ 07:02 - Friday, August 15th, 2008 Email
mister andersen you continue to show your lack of any football knowledge. The definition of a rookie is a player who is in his first year in the league. Not one of the WR's being mentioned as having a chance to make the team, with the exception of Bumpus, is a rookie.

Obomanu is in his third year. Taylor is in his second year, as is Payne and Kent. All of these guys have been with the team for 2 full training camps (three for Obomanu), and they were all on the team for the entire season last year.

You can't even say that they are first year players with the 53 man roster except for Kent. Obomanu and Taylor both had several games played last season and Payne was placed on the active roster late into the season and into the play-offs.

No rookies there at all.

But by all means keep talking about going out and getting some cast-off WR that has NO FICKIN CLUE about how Seattle's offence works just so you can sleep at night.

Not sure how they'll evaluate Saturday's game either...our 3rd-string QB and unproven receivers vs the 1st-string defense of Chicago. About If we don't do well, was it our QB, our receivers, or just the fact that they're facing Chicago's #1 defense that skewed the results?

If we blow out the Bears, fine, we can say the receivers are all good. But anything less and I still won't have a solidified opinion...it'll have to wait until Week 3.

It doesn't matter. The coaching staff will see the mistakes and work on correcting them regardless of the outcome. The only people who might be confused are the talking heads, the column scribblers and us guys. We're not important.

Frye needs the work, the receivers need to work with Frye and, if Vallos is going to be the backup center, then he needs to learn how to adjust to different quarterbacks. A tough defensive opponent is an optimal test for all of those things. Fine tuning or overhauling, you might as well do it vs the best competition available.

Bears were the 28th ranked defense last season. Devin Hester is their entire team.
