Seattle defensive coordinator John Marshall talked with reporters for about 15 minutes after the special teams practice on topics including the Chicago Bears quarterback situation, Mike Holmgren's final year as head coach and the improvement of cornerback Josh Wilson.

As always, the conversation with Marshall was both enlightening and entertaining. Here are a few snippets.

On Seattle blitzing Rex Grossman in the game Saturday against Chicago, Marshall had this to say: "They've got a veteran group. A veteran quarterback and (Rex) Grossman nailed us on some throws a couple times in earlier games and I don't think I wanted to give him that opportunity again. Basically we were going to make him be good right off the bat."

[More:]

Seattle's game plan may have helped determine Chicago's quarterback battle. Grossman struggled against Seattle, finishing 9-of-15 for 74 yards and an interception. Grossman was sacked once, and had one intentional grounding when he was about to be sacked. The Bears named Kyle Orton the starting quarterback today.

Marshall went on to say he thought Orton was the better quarterback.

On a veteran defense with all 11 starters returning setting the tempo for this team, Marshall had this to say: "Our guys last year and this year felt that they needed to lead the way, and defense does. They need to lead the way. And even though the offense is an outstanding offense -- obviously now there's a few things they need to take care of to really get it going -- but Mike Holmgren's offense scores points. Our guys know that and they can be excited about that and go into a game very positive.

"But at the same time games are won 3-0 or 9-6, something like that. If we get into one of those games we've got to be able to do the job."

On the play of Josh Wilson: "He is all business and he's improving. I'm really happy with where Josh is right now."

On Holmgren perhaps taking it easy coaching his last season: "He's a football coach. And he knows that he's got a responsibility to his players, to the fans and to his family.

"Mike is not made of that fiber. He would never do that. He's going to try to make this, his last year of coaching, the best ever."

The team worked on kickoff and punt return in an hour-long afternoon practice.

If anything, Holmy would be more focused b/c he knows this is his last chance to do in Seattle what he did in GB. Getting it done would guarantee his place in the HOF (although I personally think he'll get in without winning the big one in Sea).

Yeah, he'll be in the HOL, first vote.

Errr, HOF, first vote.

yeah he's already a lock.

i don't think it makes him any less motivated though. he still wants to get it done for his own pride, for matt, and for the fans.

What bonehead even suggested that Holmgren might "take it easy" in his last year?

Holmgren is a great coach - tough, intelligent, highly demanding of both players & coaches, loyal [sometimes to the detriment of the team - others would have given up on Koren Robinson & Jerramy Stevens before he did], good with the community, good with the media and understanding of the moral/ethical responsibilities that go with the job. Let's face it, the guy is the antithesis of Jerry Glanville... he's everything that you would want in a head coach, and whether or not the 'hawks win a Superbowl this season, he can certainly say that he has left this team in a much better position than it was when he got here.... he'll be sorely missed when he is gone...

but enough of that, there's a full season of football ahead of us and I think that this is gonna be a GREAT year...

If that was the photo I think it is, its probably Leroy Hill riding Rex Grossman like a rented mule.

Yeah, and that's why I'm still a little miffed that Ruskell didn't beg him to coach as long as he wants. With a little arm-twisting and money-waving, he could have been persuaded to stay a little longer.

Listen everyone. The BIG SHOW is playing one more year in Seattle and I am very greatful for the years he has dedicated. But its time for football, not woulda coulda, shoulda. For example, great job by the kickers. I think it should go to Mare. The value you get to be able to reduce or eliminate the threat of returns outweighs the future potential of our 7th rounder.

Also amazing how many rookies may make this very talented roster. The fact is, some very good talent will be sent down the road. We should end up with a real good practice squad this year.

If I'm Holmgren, maybe he returns to coaching or a front office job somewhere, but besides getting another ring, what's wrong with retiring at his age? He's not delusional like Favre. He's been there, done that and has nothing more to achieve.

I don't want to see Holmgren go either, but eventually the team has to move on. There aren't any Joe Pa's in pro football.

JoeHawk51 @ 12:59 - Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 Email
You are right about his success in most areas, but not so much in the head office side. He does not need any more money, but personal pride, a sense of unfinnished business, with the home town team,(building thier third home near the SF practice facility), along with a strong need from the 9ers. I would not bet on it, but I would also not bet against it. Just like Parcels, there is satisfaction after coaching through getting to control the operation in total.

I look forward to whatever he chooses to do. I hope he gets in the HOF on the first try when that time does come.
STTBM @ 13:57 - Tuesday, August 19th, 2008
Im convinced the 9ers and McCloughan are drooling, waiting for Holmgren to leave the hawks. They will beg him to coach, and they may even replace McCloughan with Holmy, though Holmy may not want to take his job. They would be nuts not to try to get Holmy.

The Raiders should hire him as both GM and coach, or GM at least, but Al Davis is too stupid. Now there would be a Walrus-worthy rebuilding project!
wabubba68 @ 15:35 - Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 Email
Davis is too stupid and Holmgren is too smart to ever agree to go to Oakland.

Holmgren MIGHT take a year off, but sooner or later he will become the GM/Head Coach in San Francisco. He'll end up taking three different teams to the playoffs, and perhaps the Super Bowl, ensuring his first ballot induction to the HoF. He'll eventually retire in the Bay Area as a local boy made good.

God, it's going to be depressing when his 49er teams kick our Hawks around...fortunately, that won't be the case for many seasons because of the work (and standards established) during his tenure in Seattle.
