Quarterback conundrum

OK, so here is the situation that Mike Holmgren finds himself in this week:

With only four days between now and the game against the Oakland Raiders, and his top three quarterbacks suffering some sort of injury, what does he do against the Raiders?

He certainly is not going to throw Matt Hasselbeck out there and risk having him injured just before the season opener in Buffalo. He does not yet know the severity of Charlie Frye's knee injury, though Frye said his knee was sore. And while Seneca Wallace played tonight, Holmgren said he did not even plan on allowing Wallace to throw a pass until they found themselves down by a point with 2 1/2 minutes left.

A lot of course will depend on what they say on Tuesday about Frye's injury and if that will restrict him. But it is an interesting question nonetheless: Who does Holmgren go with?

And before you say Dalton Bell, this was Holmgren's response when he was asked about playing Seneca late: "We didn't have any choice really. I wasn't going to put Dalton Bell in against them."

Why is our 4th QB unfit to face NFL preseason competition?!?

There are plenty of up and coming journeymen who could get the job done out there.

Next year: 3rd round draft pick QB with a beastly arm but no accuracy. Let him develop. Play him in the preseason. Let him watch Hass, Frye and Seneca and he will learn precision passing. Someone will get injured this year and we shouldn't be rolling with only two conventional QBs.

Maybe I "mis-remember" but I thought that Frye got hurt on the drive where we went up 17-10. Then Seneca went into the game and started throwing the ball. After which, SD then took the lead with only 3 minutes left. So, if I remember correctly, how can Holmy say he didn't want Seneca to throw at all when he was throwing with the lead?

Holmgren didnt want Bell to get eaten alive by the Chargers defense. Maybe he will have to play him against the Raiders. The Raiders have no line or LB's, but they do have a scary secondary.

... which would make for a lousy game if dalton hands it off all day.

the game would go by rather quickly, and maybe forsett can make his case against chokeland like he couldn't make it against the charburgers.

A fourth string QB might float a pass over the middle that could get one of our WRs creamed. That is always what I am afraid of during pre-season. An experienced QB knows not to hang a WR out like that.

Seneca didn't come in til after the 2 pt conversion. Frye put us up 17-10, then SD drove down and scored 8. Seneca got only the last drive which ended with the INT.

can we forfeit the last preseason game? :)

For the record. Seneca came into the game with 8:50 left in the 4th and we were up 17-10 (right after the possession where Babin sacked Volek). The first play for Seneca was a run around left end by Forsett. The second play, was a pass to Taylor who stretched out for the ball and then got up and dove across the 1st down marker.

Therefore, with the lead and Holmgren saying he didn't want to have Seneca throwing, why was Seneca throwing?

What? No. Wallace came into the game with nine minutes left in the forth quarter and ran three drives. The first ended with the Forsett fumble. The second was three and out and the third was the interception.

Seneca threw two passes in his first two drives. The first was to Taylor where he dove for the ball and then got up and got across the first down marker (then he went off the field dangling his left arm). And the second was a pump and go route to Obo who dropped the ball on the sideline. I think Obo hurt himself with that drop as he should have had a huge play on that one.

I think Holmgren does a disservice to young guys like Bell. It's the fourth quarter of a pre-season game, so why not let Bell play?

The NFL should have never made us play 2 preseason games 3 days apart. I say make a statement & let Dalton Bell have 4 quarters of glory. With this team's injuries, NO STARTERS SHOULD PLAY FRIDAY.

No line and no linebackers? I beg to differ. The Raiders finished the 2007 season 8th in the league in passing defense, but a pathetic 31st in run defense, and a poor 26th in scoring D. Linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard, especially Morrison, are two of the best in the NFL and with the strength of the D line being pass rush, particularly Derreck Burgess, young Mr. Dalton better hope the game plan vs. Oakland is to hand the ball off a lot.
