The rookie running back was getting a lot of carries with the first unit during Wednesday's practice and he should get a pretty good opportunity to win a spot on the roster. He was getting in a lot of work with Owen Schmitt as the lead blocker, which is a funny looking pairing given their respective size. Forsett said afterward that he is looking forward to the opportunity and just wants to take advantage of his chances.
We also spoke with Logan Payne afterward, who is another bubble guy who probably needs to have a good game to make the team. He kind of laughed when I asked him if it was frustrating that all the balls thrown to him seemed like they were either high, off-target or a defensive back was there to make the play. But, he said, no excuses, he has to make the plays when he gets his opportunities.
Mike Holmgren seemed a bit lukewarm when I asked him if Jordan Kent surprised him by how productive he has been in the preseason. Holmgren basically said Kent has gotten more touches than anybody else. Not sure how to read that, whether that means Holmgren was telling his QBs to throw elsewhere and they didn't or what. I was a bit surprised he was not more complimentary of Kent.
Brandon Coutu was back at practice. The thing that it looks like to me is that Mare's ball seems to explode off his foot, while Coutu's seems to float more. It doesn't jump like Mare's. There was a stiff breeze blowing today, and both kickers came up about 10 yards short on 45-yard kicks. Ryan Plackemeier just stood up laughing after the balls fell well short. Holmgren had them move up four yards, and with the wind dying down they both made their kicks.
As I mentioed in the earlier post, there were a lot of interceptions today. One popped through Joe Newton's hands and into the hands of Jordan Babineaux. Lance Laury picked one off in the end zone, leading Mike Holmgren to yell at him not to come out. Kevin Hobbs also had an interception. Dallas Sartz had a nice play to knock down a Bell pass in 7-on-7 drills, and David Hawthorne also made a nice play to punch away a pass by Bell. Bell did connect on two deep TD throws, one to Bryan Gilmore and the other to Logan Payne, who beat Jennings and Grant.
Holmgren jokingly said that Craig Terrill hurt his back picking up an amp. He never clarified though, so I don't know if he was serious or not, both about the injury and the cause. Regardless, Terrill missed practice.
Holmgren said the upcoming game was very important for allowing the coaches to evaluate the close calls. One game, Holmgren said, could be the difference between a guy fulfilling his dream or having it shatter. He brought up Babin as a guy who has played very well this year, and said Babin-Atkins is a close call.
Bruce DeHaven said that Lindsey's and Robinson's velocity were similar, but Robinson was more accurate and more consistent. Boling is writing on Robinson for tomorrow so I didn't get the chance to speak with him.
By the way, the Seahawks issued this release: Due to the holiday weekend, fans traveling to the Seattle Seahawks game against the Oakland Raiders on Friday, August 29, can expect heavy traffic in downtown Seattle and throughout the SODO area.
Fans are strongly encouraged to arrive at Qwest Field at least 90 minutes prior to kickoff to avoid parking delays and overcrowding at the gates. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Touchdown city will open at 4 p.m.
COMMENTS:
Kent, Taylor, Obo, I believe that all of them would get picked up - probably by washington. they would have a incling of the system since from what I have seen is a hybrid of ours with a Zorn twist.
I think Schmitt or Kirtman will get picked up - Oakland and another team have been bringing in FBs right and left - I think both have shown enough to get a chance from someone
and of course we all think that Forsett would get grabbed right away!
Yes, Frank, it does seem like bullsh!t that Payne hasn't been getting much of a chance in games. I could care less if it were Steve Largent or Jerry Rice in their primes... neither would have caught the 40 yarder that Frye "threw" the other night or that Seneca (I am a worthless back-up, but others [who are mornons] think is good) Wallace "threw" to him.
Really its not suprising considering of how times I've heard TNT and Farnsworth say Kent dropped a few catches in pratice today etc. Over the last 3 months or so its been about 50-50 concerning good reports on Kent opposed to bad ones. Kent probably catches more balls because Frye feels like he has something going with him so he keeps going back there. Kent needs to be consistant to be a nfl player. Holmgren always has this for players who keep screwing up, i.e. Weaver last pre-season. Ah the dreaded Holmy tirade on the sidelines....good times.
Atkins has shown absolutely nothing rushing the QB this pre-season and that's against Joe Blow insurance salsesman so yeah Babin is a keeper. Atkins plays the run better that Babin but that's not saying much. Babin might, just might, be a threat to rush the QB this year but only on passing downs.
I am just dis-allusioned about the whole small ball DL line we have. Bernard should be playing DE and we should be starting a 340lb monster like Jenkins/Stroud beside Mebane....but no.
I would say we gotta keep Atkins because of his younger age and looked good last year.
I would risk letting Forsett go to the PS, everbody here loves him but he has had all his production against 4th string defenses. Not to mention, he is about 5th on the depth chart.
I think Ruskell will pick up a WR once the cuts happen next week.
I say keep Coutu for the long-term, or PUP him if you can.
Put Bumpus and Payne on the PS. Neither one has a single NFL catch.
I thought the same thing when we were getting torched Monday night. I think it was Julian Peterson in a post-game interview that said Sproles was tough to see behind his OL.
I thought Forsett was pressing a bit, especially on KR/PR, but I can't blame the guy. I'm looking forward to seeing him run with the first unit tomorrow night.
Again with the 'Ruskell will pick up a WR when cuts are made' garbage? We are all discussing which of our talented young WR's can we risk to waivers and you keep bringing up the idea of going out and getting some cast-off.
Oh, and Kent also doesn't have an NFL catch. But both he and Payne have catches in the pre-season.
If you aren't aware Payne has at least 5 catches in this year's pre-season games.
I think taylor could be a good receiver, -maybe-
but Obo doesn't look like it. keep kent and payne. payne has looked pretty good even with a broken rib..
Now there's a good idea, Bernard at end with Green and Mebane at tackle. Which is why Marshall won't do it.
Wallace is good Bobby, but Frye sucks big time.
"Who would make the team over Kent? Branch, Engram, Taylor, Obo, Kent. Payne and Bumpus have an outside shot depending on how many they keep and if they PUP Branch. Please don't tell me Payne has shown more than Kent. This is a no brainer."
That might be valid if Kent were playing with cracked ribs like Payne, but he's not so it isn't. Branch should be put on IR, Oborated should be released and Taylor, Kent, Payne and Bumpus kept.
"Washington has S. Moss, Randle El and Thrash as veterans, and drafted two WRs in the second round. They are not going to pick up any of our receivers if we waive them. There is a good chance that Payne, at least, would get through waivers. Obo would not, but he would not be a candidate for the practice squad anyway."
Outside of Santana Moss, the Redskins receivers suck major ass. Randle El? A failed experiment at what so many want to do with Wallace, make him into a receiver. Thrash? Give me a freakin' break. Anyone of our young guys would be grabbed by Zorn and would easily replace Thrash and Randle El, they suck. And the two receivers they've drafted are looking like busts, especially the Oklahoma dude (which shouldn't be a surprise).
I agree about Atkins, thought he might make a good bigger DE but he's done nothing this camp/pre-season and Babin has outplayed him.
Kirtman was a waste of a draft pick. It would be mega-stupid to release Schmitt, but we're talking about Ruskell here.
