Just got a call from Dave Boling, who is up at the VMAC, and boy did he have some interesting news. The Seahawks are bringing back 38-year-old Jeff Robinson to be the team's long snapper.
Robinson, as you remember, was the guy the team signed on Dec. 11 last season to replace Boone Stutz. Robinson snapped for the last three regular season games and both playoff games and settled the uneasy snapping situation.
The Seahawks thought they had their long-snapper for this season and future ones when they drafted Tyler Schmitt in the sixth round back in April. Schmitt, though, was placed on the injured reserve on Tuesday and is now out for the season.
So, it looks like the job belongs to Robinson again.
COMMENTS:
a) robinson does not last the season
b) robinson does nothing on punt coverage
i would bet real money that there will be yet another long snapper for the seahawks at some point this season.
Lindsey's an adequate emergency fill in, but definitely not consistent enough for everyday snapping throughout the season, that is, unless you want some snaps over the punters head and some field goal snaps on the ground.
He put one field goal snap on the ground that Plack had to pick up in a hurry and put in place in the San Diego game, and almost snapped it over Plack's head on one punt, where Plack jumped high up to grab the snap. He hasn't blown one completely yet, but mostly because of good hands by Plack on Monday night, and by Hodges last week. I was worried that it would be a bit of an issue, not as bad as last year, with Lindsey doing it, but now it shouldn't be a problem. We probably lose a bit on punt coverage, but I think it's a win situation overall.
Let's recap. Timmay! thought Darche wasn't good enough to re-sign last offseason and told him the Seahawks were "going in a different direction". So he signs with Kansas City and does a great job and if I remember right he even kicked a FG there. Timmay! keeps his croney from Tampa Bay, Rackley, who filled in less than admirably when Darche was hurt in 06. Rackley, as it turned out, sucked as a long snapper. Timmay! brings in another crony, Boone Stutz from Atlanta, and he sucks even worse than Rackley. In fact he sucked more than anything has ever sucked before, including the 92 Seahawks 2-14 team. So, having run out of cronies, Timmay! brings in a 37 year old dude off the street who'd been out of football for 2 years, and he plays better than Timmay!s cronies did. Yep, they went in a different direction without Darche, alright, downhill. So they draft a long snapper this year, and he's put on IR and now they're back to the 37 year old Robinson. That was a brilliant move Timmay!, almost on a par with not re-signing/Franchising Hutchinson, giving up a 3rd round pick for Bureleson, giving up a 1st round (and our chance to draft Ben Grubbs) and a ton of money for Branch, and giving Hutchinson's money to Alexander, and wasting a 1st round pick on Spencer. Yes indeedy, we sure didn't need Jean-Phillipe Darche.
