First and foremost, all the dynamics we previously discussed were thrown into disarray because Ben Obomanu suffered a broken clavicle that may have ended his season. Mike Holmgren said Obomanu was a candidate for IR but the decision will be made today. It moves everybody up a notch, meaning that Logan Payne is likely in, though Holmgren was not willing to rule out Michael Bumpus, who led the team with three catches and 53 yards.

It also probably puts Justin Forsett on the roster because if Forsett is not the return man it was probably Obomanu. Without him, I don't know who they would go with back there. It wouldn't be Courtney Taylor if he is starting at flanker, and the ranks start to get thin at that point. If you read the game story I posted earlier, Holmgren had a quote about Forsett's chances and was complimentary of his ability to overcome his start.

[More:]

On a positive note, Holmgren said there is a chance that Deion Branch can begin practicing next week.

I spoke with Jason Babin, who said he played special teams tonight for the first time in his career. That would lead me to believe they are strongly considering keeping him since he would have to do that if he wants to stay on the roster. He had his fourth sack in four games tonight -- though he was the beneficiary of the QB being flushed by Baraka Atkins, with whom he is competing for a spot.

Forsett said he has learned to stay positive when things go badly because if you dwell on them then it is going to snowball and things will get out of control. He said he knows he messed up early but didn't concentrate on that.

Brandon Coutu was joking that he was a perfect 3-for-3 on tackles this preseason, though he also understood that it was not a good thing for kickers to be making tackles. Personally, I think that is the difference between Mare and Coutu: Mare doesn't give them much of a chance to return them. Coutu almost forces them to do it. In tonight's game, there was a 7- to 10-yard difference between Coutu and Mare in kickoff distance.

Logan Payne said he did not see the replay of his catch that was ruled not a catch, but he felt like he caught it and the guy made a good play to knock it out.

Holmgren came out very late and the deadlines were very tight, not allowing for much else. Plus, by the time Holmgren was done -- or by the time I bailed on him speaking -- most of the players were out of the locker room.

We'll see how accurate all our speculation was tomorrow, when the cuts are announced.

If the team has soured on Forsett the last two games, I wonder if Ruskell trades a conditional pick to some team for someone who can return punts.

He made a deal around this time two years ago for Josh Parry (derr... not to return kicks) and Pearman last year.

I wonder if he has anything up his sleeve this year?

I think something will be done, they need a vet at receiver. By the way Frank I think Josh Wilson has returned some punts for us and he is only a nickleback so I think that would be a possibility.

I think we can manage without going out and signing some veteran WR. Jordan Kent, Michael Bumpus, Logan Payne and Courtney Taylor should do just fine. Not to mention Nate Burleson and the possibility of Seneca helping out as well.
No need to waste a roster spot and more money on a guy who more than likely will have to learn a whole new system and playbook.

Branch should be ready to play in a few weeks as well.

At least we are having an injury problem in a position that we are really deep in. If we had this same injury problem with our DB's or LB's or other positions...we would be in alot more trouble.

I'm sure the pro player personnel staff will be watching the cut lists around the league for players they've been scouting. Those last couple of spots might be taken by a player who was in someone elses training camp.

"In tonight's game, there was a 7- to 10-yard difference between Coutu and Mare in kickoff distance."

Mare did leave a kickoff (his last one, I think) on the 3 or 4 yard line. While he gets them deep a lot, he's certainly not automatic (not as automatic as Coutu is on field goals, anyway).

Looks like Obo's loss will be Forsett's gain in this case.

Short kick offs will put coutu on the PS,or it should.

+1 Agreed!

Disagree, we need some help BAD at WR, and can't just throw rookies in the mix and expect them to perform.

The 49ers cut Ashely Lelie....could provide some depth at wideout! Too bad for Ben, I thought this was his year.
Static7 @ 19:45 - Saturday, August 30th, 2008 Email
The 'rookies' already know the offense and playbook, and if they went out and signed a guy like Ashley Lelie if would take him at least a few weeks to learn plays and get on the same page as the offense. By the time he gets acclimated, Branch or even Engram would be back. Which would equal a wasted roster spot.
