First and foremost, all the dynamics we previously discussed were thrown into disarray because Ben Obomanu suffered a broken clavicle that may have ended his season. Mike Holmgren said Obomanu was a candidate for IR but the decision will be made today. It moves everybody up a notch, meaning that Logan Payne is likely in, though Holmgren was not willing to rule out Michael Bumpus, who led the team with three catches and 53 yards.

It also probably puts Justin Forsett on the roster because if Forsett is not the return man it was probably Obomanu. Without him, I don't know who they would go with back there. It wouldn't be Courtney Taylor if he is starting at flanker, and the ranks start to get thin at that point. If you read the game story I posted earlier, Holmgren had a quote about Forsett's chances and was complimentary of his ability to overcome his start.

[More:]

On a positive note, Holmgren said there is a chance that Deion Branch can begin practicing next week.

I spoke with Jason Babin, who said he played special teams tonight for the first time in his career. That would lead me to believe they are strongly considering keeping him since he would have to do that if he wants to stay on the roster. He had his fourth sack in four games tonight -- though he was the beneficiary of the QB being flushed by Baraka Atkins, with whom he is competing for a spot.

Forsett said he has learned to stay positive when things go badly because if you dwell on them then it is going to snowball and things will get out of control. He said he knows he messed up early but didn't concentrate on that.

Brandon Coutu was joking that he was a perfect 3-for-3 on tackles this preseason, though he also understood that it was not a good thing for kickers to be making tackles. Personally, I think that is the difference between Mare and Coutu: Mare doesn't give them much of a chance to return them. Coutu almost forces them to do it. In tonight's game, there was a 7- to 10-yard difference between Coutu and Mare in kickoff distance.

Logan Payne said he did not see the replay of his catch that was ruled not a catch, but he felt like he caught it and the guy made a good play to knock it out.

Holmgren came out very late and the deadlines were very tight, not allowing for much else. Plus, by the time Holmgren was done -- or by the time I bailed on him speaking -- most of the players were out of the locker room.

We'll see how accurate all our speculation was tomorrow, when the cuts are announced.
