Nate Burleson tore his ACL in Sunday's game and is done for the season. Mike Holmgren said they are likely to go outside to sign somebody rather than pull inexperienced Michael Bumpus off the practice squad, though he was not certain because he said they are having that personnel meeting today.

He did not say Jordan Kent is stepping in to replace Burleson. I think there is a good chance that Seneca Wallace gets the assignment, depending on who they sign. Holmgren said the best-case scenario is that they sign somebody with some knowledge of the system. Bryan Gilmore comes immediately to mind because he was in camp and has experience, but there are other names out there as well.

Dave Boling is currently in the locker room and will blog about that and the rest of Holmgren's news conference when he gets back. Real quickly, Mo Morris has sprained knee and is out for this week but is not out for a long period. Deion Branch and Bobby Engram will not play this week. Sean Locklear is a maybe. No roster moves have been made yet, they don't have to be made until Wednesday.

We're not likely to see the same problems at the same level as we saw this past week. The 'Hawks are at home and have become in the past few years a "Jekyl and Hyde" type team, home and away.

To return to being an elite team in the NFL, they will need to learn, or relearn, how to play at a high level on the road. They are now, and have been for a couple of years, an exceptionally poor team on the road. Exceptionally poor. If they wish to be anything other than a mediocre team making the playoffs from a poor division, they need to find a way to play at a very high level on the road.

dlport @ 15:21 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Better dial up Joe Horn, who is at least a vet and ostensibly could learn the system faster than a young guy. Former 2nd round pick recently cut by the Pats, Chad Jackson, is available too. But let's be honest, there is probably not a star out there available.

You and me both.
cititravis @ 15:22 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
While there is plenty of terrible news out of week one, remember it is week one. I guess I have some perspective living in San Diego and seeing the Chargers horrific start to last year and then almost makeing the super bowl. This team will get better and this defense is legit. Branch and Bobby will come back, Taylor, Kent, or Payne will step up. They need to play there best in November and December and let the schedule an bye week get them to that time frame. No reason to jump off a bridge....Yet.
beerbobj @ 15:23 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Joe Horn?
beerbobj @ 15:24 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
dlport, I agree absolutely about Joe Horn. You beat me to it as I was typing in my response. Hopefully he can give us a little time for Engram and Branch to get back.
Dukeshire @ 15:28 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
I'd rather have Terry Glenn than Joe Horn, but at this point...
moeflo @ 15:28 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
I was thinking Joe Horn too. Someone mentioned Terry Glenn too, former Cowboy.

Man this hurts. He was the only one making plays yesterday.
chewy724 @ 15:32 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Joe "cancer" Horn??? Give me a break. I'd rather call D-Jack and see if he's interested. Nice job Ruskell letting Hackett go. Oh, that's right, we have all these great talented untapped receivers ready to step into his role so we didn't need to pay him $2.5 mil. Brilliant.

Everyone just calm down. We pot the patsy 9'ers and Lambs coming up and then a bye week. Lets just bump up Bumpus and Seneca and roll the dice with the 2nd teamers until week 5 when Bobby and Deion come back.
bristolhawk @ 15:32 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Frank: Do you know if Mora had any relationship with Horn? Or Ruskell for that matter? I think both were long gone from ATL by the time Horn arrived.

At any rate, it's definitely time to call Horn. We know he always has his cell phone on him -- even when he's on the field!!
Joe C @ 15:35 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Joe Horn is not the solution to anyone's problems. I'd say just stick with Taylor, Kent, and Payne until Engram and Branch are back. Until then play Carlson in the slot and mix in Seneca Wallace if you need to. The Seahawks will be fine. Yes, the offense was bad yesterday and the special teams was historically bad, but the defense was still good. That defense is good enough to win games. If I were to pick a unit to lay an egg in week one, I'd say the special teams because that should be a lot easier to fix than defense. The offense has been around long enough that as long as Matt and Walter Jones are still upright, the Seahawks will win some games and the division... again.
dhardw @ 15:35 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
It doesn't matter at this point. It started back in training camp and it will only continue. This is year of the injury. It just seems to happen to teams for whatever reason and this year is the Hawks turn. Way to many injuries to expect much this year.
chuck_easton @ 15:36 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
D-Jack is NOT interested since he's starting for Denver tonight.

I'd say give Glenn a call. Problem is he got cut by the Cowboys because of a bum knee. Let's just add a fourth WR to the IR next week shall we?

As much as I hate to say it, maybe Koren Robinson might come back? He's a good Punt returner once Engram and Branch return.

And Hackett isn't exactly the answer and never was. He missed all of traning camp and only had 4 catches yesterday for Carolina before he left the game with some new ouchie...
bhamfan @ 15:37 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Maybe Sean Alexander can play WR better than our first year guys. :).
bhamfan @ 15:39 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Barry Bonds?
madpunter88 @ 15:39 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
This is a blow for the team and I am sad for Burleson. This was going to be his season to really grow. I pray there are no Joe Horn signings...he is not the answer to any questions.

The Seahawks can win the next two (or at least should win the next two) with what they've got and some good defense. Then the bye and by then one or both of the other injured WRs will be back.

Who would have imagined the Seahawks would go into a game starting their 5th and 6th receivers on the depth chart (Engram-1, Branch-2, Burleson-3, Obamomanu-4). If they can win the next two despite that then we will definitely have something to cheer for (and by the way, I do still think they'll win the next two).

Dangle next years first round pick next year to the Cards, for AB
NickLicatasucks @ 15:42 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Good thing we haven't traded our first round pick for next year! It may be a good pick at this rate. Honestly though- this is where great organizations are able to weather the storm and reinvent themselves. Where true leaders step up. I'm sure Hasselbeck hasn't lost faith in his team. Neither has Bobby or Lofa. They'll come back strong against SF.

Wins will just come in a different fashion that previous seasons.
SupaFreak @ 15:42 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Yeah, Hackett was hurt yesterday (again) and fumbled, nearly costing Carolina the game.

Also, we thought we had: Engram, Burleson, and Obomanu back this year, and would only be awaiting Branch's return, so it wasn't bad for TR and Holmgren to think having one of the young guys as the 4th and 5th receivers was going to be a problem. They weren't expecting to need them to be the 2nd and 3rd receivers.

To lose 3 of our 4 top recievers in the preseason and 1st game, was not forseeable or something that has happened before, so I don't have a problem with the moves we made. It's just the way it goes, we were unlucky this year with our recievers health. Now we have to adjust, as those young guys maybe 4th/5th reciever quality at this point, but they aren't really 1st/2nd type quality yet, so we should bring in someone with some experience and skill. Heck, we don't need to expect them to make it through the whole season, just help for a few games until Branch and Engram are back. By then we should know who has risen to the top amongst our younger recievers to be #3 and 4.

Just need to hunker down and gameplan a way to win these next two games -- things will come back to a level of normalcy when Bobby gets back, more so if Branch can play. We'll also get Locklear back, he was missed yesterday too.

Agree with those that are saying our defense was solid yesterday. Even the complaints about Jennings seem overdone to me, he's playing across from our pro bowl corner, so he's going to see more throws his way, and almost no CB's pitch shutouts every week. The Bill threw for a little over 200 yds, I can live with that.

What a bad break with Nate; I get the sentiment of putting Seneca out there at WR, but doesn't it just feel like he'll get hurt too? I know you can't run a team that way, but that's my gut feeling.

Lots of injuries around the league in week 1; NE basically lost their season. At least we've got the hope that Engram and Branch will be back relatively soon.

jammer @ 15:52 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
Wow, it just keeps on getting better and better doesn't it?

We all saw how long it took Branch to figure out how to play in this system. A new guy won't contribute for most of the season. This sucks. The season is now sitting on the shoulders of two 6th round picks and and one UDFA

We'll now see eight in box on each play as the opposition will dare us to throw to our young WRs. So much for developing a running game.

Fugly, very fugly indeed.
chrishuw @ 15:53 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
PUT SENECA ON THE FIELD!!! he has been wasted away on the bench since he's been here. hopefully this helps them see that it's time to put the guy with the most athletic ability on the team on the field. that might be a good idea. i can't think of another team in the nfl that leaves (arguably) there most athletic player on sidelines each week.
bhamfan @ 15:54 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email
I think we will be fine. Our defense will have to win some gave for us. Our special teams will have to not lose some games for us. And Hasselbeck will have to be like Trent Dilfer and simply manage the team conservatively. We will weather this storm. Good thing the bye week is after 3 weeks.

K-Rob: "Sure Lofa, is Jim still the finger printing clerk? Tell him I said hello. Also, tell Mike the night watchman i'll bring him some donuts. Sit tight Lofa, I'll bring you a bloody mary."

Yo rbuzby, you think we can't run the ball because we got crappy running backs? It's called 8 in box dude. Its called "I dare you to throw." It's called, your receivers suck so were going to stack the run.

Here's a simple analogy. Imagine your the Sonics... errr Thunder point guard. If your sitting at the 3 point line and no one is guarding you, that means they are daring you to shoot. You brick your shot, their strategy paided off. Your team loses.

Same situation. Teams are daring us to throw. We throw, Courtney and Jeb drop the ball. We lose. Our running game is fine. WE NEED RECEIVERS!!!!

Rams lost a starting reciever too, and are going to be looking for FA help. Also, their 2nd round pick this year, who had a great preseason and was expected to be an impact player, is nursing an injury and not playing right now. Looks like the starter is out 6 weeks or more, and the rookie questionable and slowed for the next few weeks. Ouch. Looking around the league at the injury situation, it's been a brutal first week, and many, many teams are in serious fixes already in terms of depth. Jacksonville is now without THREE of their starting Olinemen for the season, and also without one of their key backups, who was the guy shot down there last week.

I think everyone will be blitzing Jax up the middle now, with a backup center, backup guards, and less depth, their oline is in trouble. While there are injuries every week, the number and the severity, and to the notable players is enough to have made this past weekend a "wipeout weekend" for more than a few teams. Let's see who can surmount their injury problems and rise up anyway. I think we can, but somebody needs to catch the ball next week, period.
chewy724 @ 16:45 - Monday, September 8th, 2008 Email

Does anyone think that when Engram, a 35 year old coming off a cracked shoulder, and Branch, with a gimpy knee that is probably, no, certainly, being rushed back too soon, are going to be in shape, and have the timing with Hasselbeck down? Uh, no. So more weeks of "struggling" are ahead.

I would hope that even Timmay! would have learned his lesson about throwing away 1st round picks on someone else's receivers. We'll need it to draft a guard with that top 15 pick this team is going to end up with, and they threw away a chance to draft Ben Grubbs who'd be starting for us for the next 10 years with the idiotic Branch trade. Enough of that crap. Speaking of wasted 1st round picks, I heard Arizona's starting center is on IR. Maybe we can pawn off Spencer on them for Jerheme Urban. I wouldn't trade a case of warm beer for him, but with the Bidwell's running that team you never know...

We are down at WR, they sure as hell aren't going to trade him to us --- even for a #1. They can get a #1 from Philly (and more). They have already been offered and declined.

So, again, why the hell would they help us for this year when the division is theirs for the taking? These are the historically worthless Cardinals, so we're still going to win this division...

Yeah, I agree. Move Wallace to wide out and bring Bumpus up from the PS for depth. Wallace knows those routes as well as any receiver on the team and he already possesses a good rapport with Hasselbeck. It's easily their best option.

As a long time Holmgren supporter, I hate to jump on the easiest target but.... there is a problem behind the curtain. The predictability of Holmgren's gameplan is beginning to rival Chuck Knox. Buffalo must have watched last year's playoff game with Green Bay because they just lined up on defense and brought everybody. Was it me or did I see a coach that once again showed no creativity and put immense pressure on his defense. I turn your attention to the current Monday night game that Mike Shanahan is making Mike Holmgren look like a high school coach. Granted, Oakland is not a stellar defense but note the gameplan tonight. I don't even like Shanahan but he came out with some creative plays with a shorted wide receiver corp and has managed to keep the Oakland rushers off balance. When a coach falls in love with his offensive "scheme?", and shows no effort to confuse the opponent, he asks for an ass kicking.
I am getting tired of it!

To me it looks like Seneca is a WR part-time for the next 3 games. We hold our breaths and watch in amazement as he and Hass have great rapport - enough to help open up the run game.

As I said in previois post we need to to pass game based on 2 TE's and passes to RB's and ANY receiver (Seneca?) able to run a quick slant - and hopefully not get killed. Heck let Weaver run the quick slant - he isn't afraid of the middle or a hit. Let Jordan Kent try to stretch the field. Use Weaver, Duckett and Forsett to spark the run.

And bring in a good vet for maybe 10 - 15 routes each week. Kinda like Joe Jerivicous a few years ago. We need a vet as a threat and some one Matt can hang his hat on.

We get Rocky and Babineau back - add a vet WR - maybe Bumpus on PR/KR with Forsett and get the O line pissed and able to execute much better - even if it means sitting Simms and/or Spencer to get the message across.

ST - just don't give up the long returns and for gosh sakes NEVER get fooled by a fake field goal again. Got that Bruce DEH?

Win this week in Seattle and go forward. Lean on the W. Jones and M Wahle and Hass to get the O running again. It will be OK if the Team learns, adjusts and responds. Let's hope.

GO SEAHAWKS

The fact that Holmgren didn't have Seneca starting at WR last week says one of two things: 1) Seneca is not a very good WR as he can't even start on the Seahawks. 2) Holmgren is a complete moron.

@seahawk44 A girlfriend of mine said she saw Alexander Bannister at a gym in Bellevue a couple weeks ago, and he was very nice...and worked out like a demon!!! Why isn't he playing? Hawks ST has never been the same without him, and he has enough experience to try it at WR. Thats 2 birds w/1 stone. Seneca is very athletic but playing him beyond return man or backup QB is stretching him a bit. K-Rob coming back?? Is he mature enough? And it still leaves ST in question. Field position is everything. Defense has had to bail the Hawks out for a while now. Our conservative ways of playing are no mystery anymore. Chuk Knox has to take a chance and seal the gaps. Put Koren and Bannister in there, I think we need that.
