Seahawks Insider

We lead this Morning’s report with some news. First off, the Regina Leader-Post in Canada is reporting that the Seahawks will sign former Green Bay punter Jon Ryan to a two-year deal and release struggling Ryan Plackemeier.

Green Bay cut Ryan last week when the Packers signed Derrick Frost. Ryan is from Regina, Saskatchewan,
Also, veteran receiver Joe Horn is reportedly visiting with two different teams today and plans to sign with one of them on Wednesday.

Seattle Seahawks

Dave Boling reports that Seattle’s 34-10 loss at Buffalo had quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and coach Mike Holmgren at a loss for words, with Hasselbeck describing the defeat as embarrassing and Holmgren reaching all the way back to his Seattle debut against Detroit to find a comparable performance offensively.

More from Boling, who reports that Nate Burleson was stunned to find out his knee injury was much worse than an anticipated, and now the search for a veteran receiver begins for Seattle.

Scott Johnson of the Everett Herald offers some more perspective on the Seahawks injury situation, including Maurice Morris and Lofa Tatupu.

Larry Weisman of USA Today writes about the lack of talented receivers in the NFL.

[More:]

San Francisco 49ers

Quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan talks about his mistakes in this report from Tom FitzGerald of the San Francisco Chronicle. The story also includes news on back-up quarterback Alex Smith, who says his fractured throwing shoulder is still tender, but he had not received MRI results back as of Monday.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that a decision on whether or not Smith will have season-ending surgery could be made today.

Smith's injury has the 49ers looking to add depth at quarterback.

Arizona Cardinals

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that the Cardinals are not afraid to open up the playbook and try a few tricks. Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt lined up cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at wide receiver and nearly completed a long pass to him down field.

Mike Tulumello of the East Valley Tribune reports the Cardinals’ kicking game looked improved in the team’s win over San Francisco.

Tulumello also writes that Arizona’s offensive line looked strong against the 49ers.

St. Louis Rams

Rams head coach Scott Linehan takes the blame for his team being unprepared in an embarrassing loss to Philadelphia.

With Drew Bennett sustaining a foot injury against the Eagles the Rams are getting thin at receiver.

So long, Plack. I was a fan.

I think the 'Hawks gave him every opportunity. He had a poor camp and then didn't particularly bring it in the regular season.

He's a good kid so I'm certain he will land on his feet in whatever he pursues.

Here's a better link:

"Green Bay - Punter Jon Ryan, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, agreed to terms this morning on a free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks."

Band-Aid, but Plackemeier really kicked himself off the team.

In my mind until the middle of the OLine plays with some nastiness and becomes able to assert their will runblocking and also demonstrates the ability to pass protect this team is doomed the languish in mediocrity until Hass is knocked out for the year. I'd like to see Sims sat down next and Spencer put on notice perform or else.

The team can survive on just the pass but can't be dominant without the run, without either it will be painful to watch.

The comment about Joe Horn is a bit dubious, is Seattle one of the teams he is meeting with?

Because of the lack of talented WR in the NFL I say pick him up....we need a solid veteran. Atlanta was going to a youth movement and cut him for salary reasons.
Chris de Lemos @ 10:40 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
There are a bunch of teams pursuing Joe Horn this week. I would be surprised if he ends up in Seattle.

I think it's either K-Rob or another guy who was in our system before. I would say K-Rob is a definite possibility since he actually has Holmgren's phone number and he brings seasoned punt returning abilities.
mocarob @ 10:43 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
I'm surprised that Plack is getting released after 1 game. He just rehab'ed from a pretty big injury didn't he? I thought he kicked well last season.. This is the equivelant of the Browns dumping Frye after 1 game last year...

I hope it's K-Rob. He's the best chance we have for salvaging this mess.

Plack and the receiver situation are why you don't dump guys like Feagles, DJack and Hackett, "Timmay!"
firejimmoradotcom @ 10:59 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
mocarob-- The team was already pissed at Plack for his 'pectoral injury' which was met with curious disbelief. Plus he looked like a freaking whale.

I'm sure at the end of the season they told him to get serious and be ready for training camp, and walked in on day one looking like a fat tub of goo.

I love this. It sends a message to the whole team.

Holmy never loved Plack, anyway.
chucko24 @ 11:04 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Audios Plackemeir! good riddance and lets bring in Eric Moulds, Terry Glenn or any Veteran receiver who Hass can tell what to do in the huddle. Our rookies cant get open!

PS our line is not GOOD. Probably a bigger problem than at WR.
nighthawk2 @ 11:09 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Frye sucked, which is why he was benched at the end of the first game last year and probably would have been released last March if Ruskell hadn't wasted a 6th round pick on him (and Alvin Pearman). Plackemeir sucked, his punt putting Buffalo at mid-field set up Lynch's 21 yard TD run. I like having another Canadian special teams guy again, last one we had was pretty good until Ruskell decided we didn't need him anymore.
nighthawk2 @ 11:10 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Actually I think Frye was benched at halftime in the opener last year.
JoeHawk51 @ 11:21 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Frank, Can you tell me what, if any, impact is to the salary cap when a player is placed on IR? Do you know what space there is under the cap now?

Osiris33 "Plack and the receiver situation are why you don't dump guys like Feagles, DJack and Hackett, "Timmay!" Let's check the facts, DJack had one catch for 48 yards, not too bad but one catch? How about DJ Hackett, he fubmled the ball that lead to a Chargers TD that put them in the lead with less than 4 minutes to play. His totals for the day 48 yards in 5 receptions one going for 37 yards so the rest were very short. I can see why you can dump on Timmay with all that to shove in his face. There are a number of real good examples of unknown WR's doing very well. Marcus Colsten from NO for one. IF the line and the running game can show up, these recievers could have a chance.
mister andersen @ 11:39 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Marcus Colston for one, Anquan Boldin for two.

There really aren't that many examples of young receivers coming out of no where to produce.

I think we'd be in better shape if we still had Hackett....how can you argue against that? Maybe you own a Logan Payne jersey? Hope you didn't pay a lot for it.

Ruskell had to know that Branch was gonna be out for a while, and when Engram got hurt he did nothing, when Obomanu got hurt he did nothing after cuts came down. Now he HAS to do something or I see a big L coming at the home opener.
nighthawk2 @ 11:52 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
John Clayton is on KJR right now. He said that Robinson is NOT going to be brought in, and he thinks the most likely candidate is Sammy Parker.
nidhighe @ 11:58 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
From the article about Ryan: "After cutting Ryan, the Packers cited concerns with Ryan's consistency, directional punting and release time."

Oh, great move, Ruskell.
snohawk907 @ 12:16 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
where is hodges? seems like he was solid when pudge was injured in camp.

JoeHawk51,

Your comparison is absurd. Anybody who has ever watched a football game knows that DJack and hackett are better than anybody the Seahawks have at the moment, and would produce far more in this offense than Payne, Kent, Taylor, etc.

Not siging K-Rob is stupid. Desperate times call for desperate measures. But "Timmay!" Ruskell is an ego-maniac who will never admit he made a mistake. Not saying cutting K-Rob was a mistake, BTW, but not signing him is.
ElPerroGrandeIII @ 13:01 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Ruskell is a complete idiot. He couldn't have addressed this in the off-season. I mean, we all knew that Plack sucked, didn't we?
skrati @ 13:12 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
"There really aren't that many examples of young receivers coming out of no where to produce"

DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal had pretty good starts for rookies. When you compare that to Payne, Kent, and Taylor, who have been around a year longer, it's mystifying why our young receivers look so clueless.

Other than Payne's catch (and fumble), they looked unable to get off the line clean, unable to run a precise route, not good at getting open, and not able to use their bodies to create space or shield a defender, and not able to make a freakin' catch with their hands.

I'm wary of a washed up old receiver. I'd try Chad Jackson (or another 1-2 year guy) - just because he wasn't good enough to catch on in New England - the leading passing team from last year - doesn't mean he wouldn't be good in a pinch for the Hawks.

Also, anyone else bummed on our secondary? I mean, what good does it do to get these little quick guys if they can't really stay with a receiver, and even if they can, are unable to make the play anyway? That's not even talking about their open-field tackling, which is atrocious. This also might be why our special teams sucks, these little corners get blown away by blockers or get run over by the KR/PR.

OK, I think I'm done venting for now. Anyone know a good therapist? Maybe I'll become an OK City Thunder fan...
Golfhack1396 @ 13:18 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal were high draft picks. None of our remaining receivers were drafted above the 6th round. Every team in the league passed on these guys up to that point because they were lacking something whether it be size, speed, hands, intelligence, whatever. That's why it's taking these guys longer to get acclimated.
ibgoofy @ 14:11 - Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 Email
Horn is 36 and missed a couple of preseason games due to a hamstring problem... Also skipped all voluntary camps and came unprepared to camp physically and with limited playbook knowledge... Not sure I'd want him...

Notes on Jon Ryan ... (and Plack)

Chad Jackson not only could not catch, he couldn't stay healthy either. Thats the last thing we need. And I watched Samie Parker drop balls for three years in KC before getting cut by them, and he couldn't make the team in Carolina. Seems like just the kind of guy that TR would bring in to blend in with the rest of our wideouts who cant catch. I hope that Clayton is wrong on that one.
