Seahawks Insider
Friday, September 12th, 2008
Posted by Frank Hughes @ 01:47:06 pm

Seahawks defensive back suffered a cracked bone in his hand in yesterday's practice and was wearing a cast on his hand today. Mike Holmgren said they are going to try to affix something smaller to his hand for Sunday's game to make it more workable. Trufant said he has played with an injured hand before, against both UCLA and the Apple Cup one season at Washington State, though it was on his right hand not his left and it was his thumb not his hand.

Though Mike Holmgren said this morning on KIRO radio that they were going to activate Michael Bumpus from the practice squad, he did not confirm that after practice. He said they have until Saturday to make that decision. It will be done, and Bumpus will probably even get some playing time, likely in the slot. Holmgren said Courtney Taylor and Logan Payne both will start.

[More:]

Bumpus said that he has been catching punts this week, so there is a chance that he is returning against the Niners. I asked him about that one practice in training camp when he dropped like four punts, and he laughed and said, "Man, that was the worst punt return practice I've had in my entire life, and I've been returning punts since I was a little kid."

The Seahawks have so few linemen right now that Ray Willis was playing right tackle on both the starting unit and scout teams.

If Trufant needed any inspiration, he got it from Lofa Tatupu, who also is wearing a cast for an injured thumb. On one play in practice, Julian Peterson tipped a Charlie Frye pass in the air, and Lofa intercepted it.

I talked to Courtney Taylor, who said he is approaching this week's game like it could be his last. I asked him if the club actually told him that, produce now or never. He said no, but he said he also knows the nature of the sport and that if you are not going to produce you are replaceable. He saw that with Ryan Plackemeier. He said he has been thinking about Sunday since the last second ticked off the clock in Buffalo, and he will have a big game.

Two guys in a kayak sat on the water along the edge of the field and watched the entire practice. Now that is the way to go.

Another day, another injury. I'm kind of dreading sunday at this point because I don't want to see who's next.

49er spies? seriously, are they worried about anybody in boats watching and/or taping plays?
moeflo @ 13:56 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
This week needs to be over. This has to be one of the worst weeks, including last Sunday I've had to go through (Sports News wise).

pawlecc, that was funny haha.

Didn't you see last week's game? The kayak spies will get nothing, because we don't have a 3rd and long plan. :-)

Any chance Numbskull Ruskell can suit up? I'd love to see him go on the injured reserve list and have Mr. Allen get a real GM in here. Any chance we can elevate Holmgren to GM and let J Mora run with it?

Yo Courtney, read the writing on the wall. That's exactly what they are saying... NOW OR NEVER!!!! Oh, that's right. You can't read. Your too busy yapping about yourself.

They could always send Blitz out with the T-shirt gun to drive the lake-bound spectators from the shores.
Kuya @ 14:48 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
It'll be cool that if he can put extra padding in the cast to create a HUGE Hand due to the injury -> so he can swat the ball away even better.
mindnbrad @ 14:48 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Nooooooo. Not more Ruskell talk. I've had it.
chuck_easton @ 15:01 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
chewey724,

You do realize that Holmgren was already the GM/Coach of this team and that he didn't do such a great job?

(He was responsible for Robinson, Stevens, and a few other lockerroom cancers that are no longer here).

Holmgren was pretty much told he could give up the GM job and stay as the coach or he could be fired from both.

Yeah "locker room cancers" like Steve Hutchinson (Future Hall of Famer), Shaun Alexander (F-HOF) and Darrell Jackson (441 Rec., 6,440 yards, 14.5 YPC Avg, and 47 TD's in 7 years as a Seahawk).

Hmm, maybe we need a few more of those "locker room cancers" on our roster. I bet we'd win more...
QB_Sneak @ 15:28 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Osiris, you're an idiot. Nobody ever called Hutch a cancer. He left. Nobody ever called Shaun a cancer. He got old and ineffective. Nobody ever called DJack a cancer... oh, wait - he was one.

So for my fantasy team this week, should I start Payne or Taylor or Bumpus? Maybe I'll take all 3. What a triple threat!!

I'm looking for a low scoring game on Sunday.

The 49er's don't have much of a D-line but have good linebackers. Seattle has a weak O-line and good running backs. They don't have a very good D-backfield, we have zero pass catchers. If we figure their blitz package out we'll be OK on offense.

Our defense is significantly better than their offense.
dougenfield @ 15:54 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
The Seahawks have good running backs?

Uh....

Really?
antediluvian @ 16:03 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
OK....this injury situation is getting ridiculous. Maybe it stems from moving into a team HQ/practice facility that bears the name of a hospital.

I'm just saying.......

pdway @ 16:07 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Somebody tell me how you play a game as physical as professional football with cracked bones?

They're such tough guys at this level.

The injury odds have got to start leveling off for us at some point, these are key guys getting hurt.
jmreid8 @ 16:08 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
The seahawks have improved at running back (we are above average) and we definitely have good depth. Ruskell is a stud and I personally admire his draft ability. Even if everybody else he picks sucked he is a legend for Tutupu alone. Prediction - seahawks win on sunday (easily) and this board turns a little more positive (hopefully).
krieg17 @ 16:43 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Hey not to stir the pot but, did anyone notice our spark plug, EX future rb, that got cut, is now starting for the Colts?
nighthawk2 @ 16:44 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Jackson was not a lockerroom cancer. He just pissed off Ruskell because he wanted Ruskell to honor what Whitsett had promised him. If Taylor doesn't improve on last weeks non-performance he SHOULD be cut.

Where does this stuff come from about the 49ers not having a good defensive line and secondary? They have a pretty good defense overall.

Seattle's defense couldn't get any pass pressure on Trent Edwards, even though they were using some back up offensive linemen and guys playing new positions. I'm not going to expect them to pressure O'Sullivan. Lynch and Jackson combined for 107 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Wonder what Gore will do? Evans had 102 yards receiving on just 4 catches. Why does anyone think the defense played well? It remains to be seen if the Special Teams will have improved any from last weeks abysmal performance. They couldn't do any worse.

I like Bumphus in the slot, that's his natural position. I still expect Carlson to be the leading receiver in this game and get a TD (now that half our offensive line problem has been resolved, if they just bench Spencer now...).
luckman15 @ 16:45 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
I'm sick of hearing about Courtney Taylor. The dude sucks. Somehow he wasn't approaching the opening game of the season with much thought and now he's realized he can be gone like that. You should ask him why he can't seem to step up and catch a football.
Pilot @ 17:32 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email

Everyone knows what that play used to be - a Mack Strong draw play. Odd how nevertheless it still seeemed to work from time to time. I imagine we will see Weaver run it also.
chewy724 @ 17:53 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
jmreid8,

Congrats on the most retarded post of the day. What rock did you just crawl out from under? You must friends with NickLicataSucks?

First off, we haven't demonstrated squat at the RB position to warrant any praise. Secondly, a draft is not build on 1 player or 1 year. The results speak for themselves. Lastly, this board will turn positive as soon as Mr. Allen kicks Numbskull Ruskell to the curb.

DJammmer @ 18:04 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
At this point; can we just put Holmy on IR; and save him until next year?

He shouldn't be going out like this. When's the last time he had 2 wrs of the street...

Comment by jammer @ 14:27 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 If Bumpus is activated from the PS who gets cut?

They will cut Brandon Catu because let face it he rookie and this is holmgren last season and he would want to keep a vetran Kicker.

Why you think their waiting until saturday because if team claim him than they have to cut someone.
vichawkfan @ 21:05 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
looking forward to Sunday. Home opener, teams back against the wall - sunshine o'plenty....49'ers perfect cure....we've handled Martz offense plenty of times.

oh ya - sky is falling, we suck, we're doomed.
BrianBlades @ 21:22 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
Nighthawk -
I agree that the Niners defense is not to be trifled with, they have breakout potential. We made Edwards look like a decent QB, and Evans racked up over 100 yards...that won't happen again this season. So...yeah, we should be worried. And we are...or those of us who remember 2002...or you know.

I really hope we pull off a win, but you are right, the defense needs to hold it down too...
misleduser @ 22:25 - Friday, September 12th, 2008 Email
I think the seahawks shoulda grabbed joe horn or even tried talkin keyshawn johnson outta retirement he says he wants to play but i understand why there not going for someone like him like they said on Nfl live they are just trying to make it to the bye and get bobby and deon back i just hope we can win at least one outta the next 2 so we are not 0-3 after the bye well im hoping for 2-1 but 1-2 is better then nothing cause than matt will have someone who can catch

Isnt this just like the Seahawks to let plays like this go, im a Suns fan and im used to horrible GM decision making.

Any bets on the next injury? Maybe another WR? or RB?
chuck_easton @ 08:58 - Saturday, September 13th, 2008 Email
Osiris,

Show me in my post where I called either Hutch or Shaun a locker room cancer? Not there.

In your hatred for all things Ruskell you will stoop to anything to try to bolster your point.

I merely said that Holmgren was fired as GM. Holmgren brought in via draft and FA players that had issues or were locker room cancers.

Usually a team, after firing a GM, doesn't turn around and give him the job back.

I don't say that Ruskell is better than Holmgren. I am simply saying that Holmgren had his shot at GM in Seattle and it ended in his getting fired from the position, period. That is a FACT. Get over yourself.
moeflo @ 13:46 - Saturday, September 13th, 2008 Email
Frank,
I was on a Hawks message board and just found out that Bumpus was activated and Parker was released. Why in the world do we still have two kickers? I'm confused.
