Seahawks Insider

Posted by Eric Williams @ 03:59:41 pm

The Seattle Seahawks officially announced the signing of wide receiver Koren Robinson during a 30-minute teleconference this afternoon.

Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell also said the team had traded for Denver wide receiver Keary Colbert in a deal with the Denver Broncos.

The Seahawks signed Robinson to a 1-year agreement, marking the return of the organization's first-round draft pick, selected ninth overall in the 2001 draft. Seattle released Robinson after several alcohol-related run-ins with the law.

However, Robinson said he's been sober since August of 2006. He's married now, with two sons and a third child, a daughter on the way.

Only 28, Robinson said he's grown up. His family keeps him grounded, Robinson said, and his focus has shifted from himself, to his family and God.

"It’s always good to get a second chance," Robinson said. "I'm grateful for this chance, this opportunity. I think it could be a good story, both for me and for the franchise."

Ruskell, who has focused on bringing in players with good character, said he did his research on Robinson. And after talking with Robinson and others that know his background, along with director of player personnel Will Lewis working Robinson out both in North Carolina and Seattle, Ruskell felt Robinson could help fill the void for the team's depleted wide receiver corps.

Ruskell said the contract does contain a side agreement with undisclosed stipulations Robinson must follow.

Ruskell said coach Mike Holmgren asked him to consider pursuing Robinson because of Holmgren's relationship with the receiver. Also, a positive meeting between Matt Hasselbeck and Robinson helped sway Ruskell to make the move.

"Had any part of that not gone well we would not have done this," Ruskell said.

Robinson fills a roster spot left vacant by Logan Payne going on the injured reserve list. However, Seattle still needs to make a move to open up a roster spot for Colbert.

I'll take a "wait and see" on K Rob.

As for Colbert... lets see, I just Googled him and found the words "$7.2 mil contract, bad routes, dropped passes, and slow" associated with him.

Hmmm, sounds like our boy Ruskell did his homework. That's the best you could do?

Wonder who gets dropped this time instead of Brandon Coutu...

I vote for Russell to go.

Colbert has great college experience at USC under Carroll. USC always produces talent, but I will take a wait and see on him as well.

USC has a bad track record when it comes to WRs the last few years.

Colbert is a proven "ok" reciever, Should do ok. And it is "cole-bert" not "col-bear".
mikew177 @ 16:25 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Whoops hit "enter" before I was done. We're hurting at almost every position except place kicking and long snapping. Our offensive line already lost Sims at RG and hasn’t proven it can run or pass block, possible changes there. We are without Morris and Seneca for a while so there’s the injury bug for QB and RB and then there’s the WR…situation. On the defensive side our D-line is inconsistence at getting to the QB and although we have 10 D-linemen there is definite talent that can step in and contribute right away. Tatupu is already hurt and we’re only carrying 6 linebackers, the least of any team in the league and we’ve all watched the “elite” secondary fill up ESPN’s Top 10 countdown. Our “long snapper” of the future had a bad back so we already replaced him. We’re on our third punter since the beginning of camp. Kicker is the only position we haven’t tinkered with yet. So why not? What do you guys think?
chewy724 @ 16:26 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
$50 says Colbert is cut by Week 7. Anyone want that bet?

Here's some bets I'll take from any of you losers:

- Holmgren throws Ruskell under the bus by week 10 ($20)
- We have a new punter by week 6 ($50)
- Matt's back gives out by week 8 and sits for 2 weeks ($75)
- Our defense never gets ranked higher than 20 by end of year ($100)
- Jim Mora takes the Huskies job ($500)
mikew177 @ 16:27 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Oh forgot about the tight ends. We've never carried less than three, which we have so that position isn't losing a man.

Wow Chewy, you are a breath of fresh air.

I wonder why Ruskell doesn't sign that super talented, 2000 yards per year the last three years receiver who is just sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring while he drinks his milk (cause he would never touch alcohol)?

Oh that's right! He doesn't exist. So the SEahawks have to sign whatever they can get and they are doing their best.
Gabe97 @ 16:56 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Do you think the hawks were trying to get D-Jack instead Colbert but Denver wouldn't give up D-Jack or they wanted to much for him. What do you think

Seahawksfan57 @ 16:59 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Chewy I'd take the Mora bet. He would be cutting his throat in the NFL if he ever did that. I know he would love that job but he will have it after he is done coaching the Seahawks.

Its easy to clear a spot for drop Taylor. He's not worth the roster spot and he'll clear waviers so they can put him on the practice squad and maybe that will humble him a little bit.
chewy724 @ 17:03 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Anniee882000,

GM's are paid the fix weaknesses on your roster in the offseason. We went into our offseason knowing Branch was hurt, Bobby was old, Burleson was a #3 reciever, and DJ would not be signed. What was Ruskells response: "Oh, we got great players on our practice squad that will step up." NICE (see Courtney retard)

And while were at it, what has Branch, Burleson, or any other receiver Ruskell signed/drafted done for us? NOTHING (see "Taco" idiot)

Tell me one thing Ruskell has done for our offense? Oh yah, he gave Shaun $62 mil. He let Hutch go. He's drafted like sh*t. Oh, wait, he built our 25th ranked D.

nighthawk2 @ 17:06 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
They traded a conditional 5th round pick for Colbert.

So how is anyone supposed to collect on those bets dude?
FB @ 17:10 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
They should have signed K-Rob last week. An overtime loss to the 9ers with the dregs they had out there could have been avoided. They needed one play better to win.
seafanalways @ 17:12 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
wow, youre a moron. who would you have liked ruskell to get? you have no clue what you are talkin about, so you should probably shut up
SupaFreak @ 17:15 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
We went into the new season with Branch expected back by the 4th game, with Engram healthy and coming off his best season, with Burleson, who basically played the #2 reciever last year and greatly improved, including huge big plays both recieving and returning, with Obomanu who had shown promise and consistency last year when called upon, and then promising young receivers: Taylor, Payne, Kent, and Bumpus.

We weren't weak. No one could expect Engram and Obomanu to get hurt before the season began, and then Burleson to go down in the first game. It was a seemingly safe bet they would be healthy until the bye week when Branch was due back, or at worst, we would have one of the young guys as the 3rd or 4th receiver.

Instead, we had the worst bad luck EVER recorded, with now six receivers sidelined, and no GM could predict that, nor did the GM intend the 4th, 5th, and 6th guys to be subbing into the 1st through 3rd spots. It's just been incredibly bad luck.

Nice Crystal ball you have there chewy, bet you see your head up your ass in it daily.
seafanalways @ 17:15 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
oh i get it chewy, you are one of those "arm-chair gms" where you think you can do EVERYTHING better, HAHAHA LMAFO!!! youre a joke!!
nighthawk2 @ 17:19 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Robinson would have made no difference last week. We got 23 points from the offense, 7 from the defense. It was Hasselbecks INT that was the difference in the game. Plus the defense continually let a bum like J.T. O'Sullivan get loose and make plays on them. Not to mention the special teams still suck, the punting has sucked for two weeks in a row with two different punters and that idiot Wilson twice brought the ball out when he should have taken the touchback, and put the offense in bad field position. Robinson wouldn't have changed that.
SupaFreak @ 17:21 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
As for Robinson, I support the move as a sort of last resort deal. There's really no down side, but no, FB, we don't have a crystal ball to know he would have had any better impact last week than who we had out there.

He didn't go to any mini-camps, training camps, or anything this year, hasn't played since last year when he caught a whopping 21 passes. I hope he plays well, but there's no guarantees. He has talent, but how much is left now, and how quickly can he get settled into a role that has impact? He also has dropped his share of passes, which wouldn't look that different than what we saw the last two weeks.

Here's hoping he works out, but don't everyone get over excited, we really don't know what kind of an impact he can or will have, we just have hope at this point.
FB @ 17:27 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Nighthawk-
K-Rob on his worst day is better than any of the guys they had out there. It was OVERTIME. Do you get it? Regardless of what ever else happened. ONE more play on offense and GAME OVER 'Hawks win. You can't put all the blame on Hass. It's easy to throw a pick when you have know idea where a bunch of Bumpuses are going to be.
thedude @ 17:29 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008
nice call supafreak, that was hilarious. chewy is a total deusch and shows it again and again with his posts.

i think the robinson could have made a difference...i mean even mcmuffin made a difference with having a little nfl experience and knowledge of the WCO. i bet this week it'll have a big effect on matt to have someone that he's more comfortable with...

FB @ 17:31 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
SupaFreak-
I'm not saying K-Rob is a saviour. Training camp aside, he knows the offense and Matt knows him better than anyone they had. No, there is no crystal ball, but their odds would have improved tremendously. Holmgren wanted him. Rusky didn't. Who do you trust?
ALASKANSEAHAWK @ 17:36 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Here are my concerns with K-Rob:

1. Can he shake off the rust quick enough to contribute?

2. Will his arthritic knee still give him problems (he was limited in practice all last year due to that)

3. Everyone says K-Rob can come in and return punts, but has only returned 2 punts his entire career...

I just hope we don't drop Schmitt for Colbert... Ruskell seems so adament about keeping Coutu
jammer @ 17:42 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Mr. Hughes: If it isn't too much trouble could we please find out what are the total conditions of this trade from Ruskell?

What pick or picks did we actually trade? A conditional 5th? Conditional on what? Is it possible that it is only a 5th but escalates to 4th if he plays x number of games? What happens if he doesn't play x number of games did we trade away a pick if he doesn't work out for us?
chucklenuts66 @ 17:46 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Knew the offense. in 2004. He's gonna be rusty, and he was never that great to begin with.. Lotsa talent, and only one truly good season.

I hope he can come in and help out, but I'm really not holding my breath. Hopefully he got those holes in his hands fixed.
SupaFreak @ 17:49 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Holmgren has always seen Koren as sort of a troubled son to mentor, and with good reason. Koren wasn't a bad attitude guy or a pain in the ass in the locker room, no a huge ego guy. He was actually well liked, his alcoholism simply was his downfall and he paid the price.

Holmgren wanted him back once all these injuries happened, believing the best. Note that the details are that Ruskell sent our top personell evaluator down to NC to work Robinson out LAST WEEK, before the game against the 49'ers, so Ruskell was definitely already considering it too. They just wanted to see how things worked out with guys who don't have the baggage Koren has, but have at least played in the NFL of late and caught some passes. It's hard to come in with no training camp and have an impact.

Now, with more injuries, they had to make the move, and more momentum built towards getting Koren in. It was a natural evolution due to circumstances, not some big standoff between Ruskell and Holmgren.

Of course Holmgren was a bit more willing to bring Robinson in earlier, he was Holmgren's pick and he mentored Robinson, he had a lot invested there, and not just on the football field. Still, it shows they were both considering it that they were already evaluating Robinson, in person, in NC, last week! Ruskell was seriously considering it even then, obviously.

None of that means he would have had an impact in the game. We don't know how big an impact he will have this week. He know the system, yes, but he hasn't actually played or even practiced in some time, and no, he won't have the exact timing down with Hass that he had 3 friggin' years ago. That will take time.

Note that even Engram and Branch have needed time after injuries to get back the timing and get in sync with Hass. Hopefully he can come in and contribute this week, and if he has a great game, awesome, but I would settle for a few catches and not too many drops. The recievers did not lose the SF game anyway.

Our defense failed to stop SF on 7 of the last 10 drives they had, meanwhile, it was not the recievers fault Hass threw one pass too low and it was tipped AT THE LINE of scrimmage and intercepted, leading to one SF TD. Meanwhile, video of the other int shows that McMullen did not keep his hands in or anything, he reached out for the ball, but a defender stuck his helmet in there before McMullen had an opportunity to even get his hands on it and the helmet popped the ball high into the air. Both those ints are somewhat bad luck, as tipped passes usually just fall incomplete, but while we didn't have many passes tipped, the ones we did just happened to go right to spots where defenders were and no Seahawks were near.

We had more issues than just recievers in that game. Hass wasn't awesome, special teams sucked, and we had some bad luck with the tipped passes and some crappy penalties too. Hopefully the whole team looks better this week, like the o-line and d-line looked last week.
freedom_X @ 17:51 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
No way a 5th round pick was traded. I think the pick (whatever it is) is conditional on Colbert staying on the team for a certain period of time. If Seattle cuts him next week, the Broncos get nothing.

If the pick was really as high as a 5th escalating to a 4th, then Ruskell did get swindled. If that deal were made, it would have to be Holmgren and/or management pressuring Ruskell for a deal. His GM mentality would never allow that if he had sole say.

Teams though know Seattle is desperate - just like selling gasoline in Galveston, teams are going to put the squeeze on Seattle for a trade. Even if Colbert went for a conditional 7th round pick - normally no one gives away even that much for a 4th receiver. They probably did offer D-Jack but for obvious reasons Ruskell would turn that down (bad blood between D-Jack and Ruskell) unlike K-Rob, where K-Rob didn't burn any bridges by cussing out managment.

I love reading this blog because there are so many absolute IDIOTS that know absolutely nothing about football that post here--unlike most blogs, I guess, which is the great thing about the web--everyone is an expert.

90% of this blog is composed of input from people that have never played a down of football.

The paranoia is just outstanding. Please, just relax.

The season isn't over after week 2. Guess what the reigning world champions record was after week 2? You guessed it, 0-2.

The Hawks will win the division-- because the division sucks. (Yeah, Kurt Warner will carry the Cards to the title--please.)

The signings this week were solid moves. The Hawks will beat down the Rams and will go 1-2. The bye week is the salvation and then the offense comes alive.

We will make the play-offs. Our sucess from there depends on whether we finish the regular season 8-8 or 12-4, both of which are easily viable.

Until then I will just enjoy reading the posts of all the morons that like to pretend they weren't just playing the sax during the games in high school and stuck in the computer lab during the games in college.

Much love.

adcoats @ 17:55 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
FB: I agree--it was OVERTIME. Unfortunately, the offense never got the ball so it never came down to one more play from our offense. What we really needed was one more play from our defense.

The 9ers seemed to move the ball at will against our secondary in the last drive. If you would have told me we would lose after scoring 30 to the 9ers, I would have never believed it. (Even the 23 our O put up should have been enough). The D needs to step up.

This link from NFL.com shows it is a conditional 5th round pick. No doubt certain performance clauses in catches, games played/started, TD's, ect. would move it up. No details on that yet.

I understood what you were saying. I still maintain that Robinson would have made no difference in the outcome. He's been away from Holmgren's offense and nomenclature for several years, so while he's going to have a shorter learning curve than others, hes still going to need some time to readjust. One thing at a time and the most important thing right now is to beat the Rams.

With the Rams horrible O line they won't score much. The Hawks will be able to run the ball and with Bumpus, McMullen and Carlson will have a passing game. Seattle will beat the Rams with or without K-Rob and Colbert and then there is the bye and after that Branch and Engram return. The WR situation will be sorted out from there.

The special teams cost the Hawks a win at Buffalo and hurt them against the Niners but they did improve from week one to week two. They will continue to improve as each player becomes more familiar whit his assignments. An unreal rash of injuries at WR has hurt the Hawks but Holmy is still the best coach in the division. Lets see what happens after the bye.
skrati @ 21:25 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
I'm having trouble believing that Colbert was worth a 5th round pick. I mean, he can't really learn the offense by this weekend, and after the bye the Hawks will likely get Engram and Branch back.

So Colbert drops below Engram, Branch, and likely Robinson. I also have trouble believing that Colbert is any better than Samie Parker. He got the chance opposite Steve Smith (when he was constantly getting double teamed) and still couldn't get open or hang on to the ball. I should know, I had him as a bench guy in my FF league :)

Oh, and I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.
freedom_X @ 22:34 - Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 Email
Regarding Koren Robinson being the difference last week:

That assumes he would have been perfect and made no mistakes. Which is hardly a given taking into account his past history. Maybe he makes one more play, and he drops a ball Bumpus, Taylor, or McMullen caught. You can't assume Robinson would have done everything the other guys did and add one more play on top of it.

Seattle got squeezed by their desperate condition and had to overpay. No one was cutting them a deal when they know Seattle is in no position to bargain.
