Gil said QB Matt Hasselbeck has been handling the frustrations of rotating receivers very well, and has not shown the frustration that you'd think would be evident. He said now it is up to the receivers to do their jobs of getting open. When I asked why Courtney Taylor's decent practices have not been transferring to the games in terms catches, he said he didn't know. Gil said Courtney will remain as the starting flanker with the hope that he can develop there with more experience. They just hope that he develops more quickly than he currently is.

Gil said both new receivers did very well on Wednesday, and he expects to see more out of them today. He said Hasselbeck needs to develop a rapport with them this week.

[More:]

Gil continues to be complimentary of Tight end John Carlson. He said Carlson is easily the best tight end they have had here. He said he still expects him to get 40-50 receptions for the season, and they would be pleasantly surprised if he gets more than that.

A few things they have learned about Carlson: He has great body control and has the ability to adjust to balls that are thrown off target and still catch it. He also has the ability to go down the middle of the field deeper than they initially thought. He is a better blocker than they thought he was.

That's my boy! John Carlson. He is the best tight end we've had here, I'm hoping he gets his first NFL Touchdown this Sunday.
If I see Courtney Taylor drop another catchable pass I'll lose it, because he has no excuses. Most of the passes thrown to him are on point.
mikew177 @ 13:00 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
I hope the window on Taylor is closing quickly. If he can't get open in a real game I don't care how well he practices. He has four catches for 39 yards in the first two games. HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE OUR STARTING FLANKER!

At some point later in life he'll be able to tell his kids that he was a bum in the NFL when he was younger and he had the opportunity to do great things, win the love of an entire city and play a key role in Holmgren's final year in Seattle. But instead it'll be a story of how he just had to step up and keep trying but his "hard work" didn't show up at game time. But if only you could have seen him practice!! Oh the practices!! Geez

I don’t understand their patience with Courtney Taylor. He was given every opportunity during pre-season and he did not produce. Jordan Kent produced and he was cut. We don’t see what they do in practice, but they seem to have an unnatural loyalty to Taylor and the guy has never produced on the field during a game. Does Taylor have pictures of Ruskell with his mistress or what?
chewy724 @ 13:08 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Tompage,

The pictures are actually of Taylor and Ruskell together. They both blow.

I wish the media would get off our receivers for a little while and talk about our pathetic 25th ranked defense. If I remember correctly, Lofa predicted 5 shutouts this year. Has be been drinking again?
moeflo @ 13:15 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Yeah Chewy, I was so excited about our defense this year.
11 returning starters, even though they blew the Green Bay game, overall we had a good defense. I even predicted a top 10 defense this year, which could change. But two weeks into the season and they're at #25? This is the same group of guys who accomplished a lot last year and this is what happens?

I can only think they're keeping Taylor because he played in a couple games last year, so that plays into experience I guess. But he just stinks and he talks too much for a guy who hasn't done squat!
jmreid8 @ 13:23 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Jordan Kent is a squirmy bean poll with speed. He's not ready to compete against a good starting db. Have you seen him run a slant he gets eatin up within five yards (and when defenses take this approach he won't have a chance). Taylor does not have this same handicap, but he's afraid to catch the ball, the coaches are probably thinking this may be overcome with experience, but if its not I expect they'll sit him and I trust their decision either way. If you ask me Taylor reminds me of a young Darrel Jackson whom had some of the same tendancies early in his career.
mikew177 @ 13:34 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
"Taylor does not have this same handicap, but he's afraid to catch the ball"

jmreid8 - His job is to catch the ball. That's it and the occasional run block. Not talk about how he's going to work hard all week so that he might be able to help the team out by catching the ball in the next game. He can't run a route and catch the ball. So what kind of WR is he?
Tompage @ 13:56 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Sando has been talking about our pathetic defense.
rwolgemuth @ 14:05 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
jmreid- i totally agree re: the taylor djack comparison. i've thought that myself- partly because they kind of run their routes the same way. jordan kent looks really bad running certain routes- also he does need to put on some weight.- rw
Joe C @ 14:14 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Obviously, no GM's in the league valued Jordan Kent enough to pick him up. He doesn't have the girth to get off the line in tight coverage. Taylor can do that, which makes him not so easily defended as Kent... and thus, more valuable.
HawkyHann @ 14:27 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Taylor will be fine. He's due for a big game. The offense is NOT the problem, it's the pathetic secondary. Russell-old and step slow, Jennings- choke artist, small, short, skinny, anything he does good?, Josh Wilson- same as Jennings but does tackle hard. Still a little guy waiting to be isolated on an island, just like teams do to Jennings. Not sure why we drafted these runts.
BobbyK @ 14:28 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
KoRo immediately becomes our best WR. That includes a healthy Branch. He's better than Engram just for the simple fact that teams have to respect and know that good old Korn Row can run past them, too. Although he's not a savior, he instantly makes our WRs at least almost legit again. I just hope he doesn't go out and get drunk now...
jmreid8 @ 14:59 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
mikew177-"If he can't get open in a real game I don't care how well he practices. He has four catches for 39 yards in the first two games. HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE OUR STARTING FLANKER!"

My previous point was that unlike Kent, Taylor can get open, he has a problem catching the ball right now, and my speculation is that there are a lot of reasons why young players have a problem with that early in their career, but if you let taylor gain some confidence those incompletions may become game breaking plays (you know he has the ability to catch the ball he's been doing it since pee wee football and apperantly he's been catching the ball in practice).
Covingtonhawk @ 14:59 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Frank -

Can you give us a list of who is on the practice squad? With all the recent moves, I have lost track.

Go HAWKS!!!
Bernie42 @ 15:06 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
At what point as a receiver do you start to wonder if there's a curse on the WR position for the Seahawks this year? If I was being asked to suit up I think I'd take an insurance policy out on my knees.
moeflo @ 15:07 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
I think the PS list is the same? except in place of Michael Bumpus' spot is Trent Shelton.
Joe C @ 15:08 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
From Seahawks.net:
Joe Newton
Pat Murray
Jordan Kent
Sam Gutenkunst
Yvensen Bernard
Marquis Floyd
Jamar Adams

As soon as Taylor got on radio flapping his mouth about how good he is then in another interview saying he is "always open". Then saying his 2 catches in preseason "showed what he could do"...I knew he was a bum. Just a complete moron and then comes out and doesnt do a damn thing. Drops passes and doesnt complete his routes. Next time Courtney, actually do something before you start spouting off you turd.
thedude @ 16:04 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008
the defense will turn it around, starting this sunday. you can't have 11 starters return and lay three eggs in a row...if so then there is a serious coaching problem. they should get some confidence back, get a rest on the bye and be ready to turn it up a notch...i hope.
mikew177 @ 16:29 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
“but if you let Taylor gain some confidence those incompletions may become game breaking plays”

jmreid8 - MAY become game breaking plays? Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury right now of waiting for young guys to realize their potential to become game breakers. They just need to focus on being receivers. Run your route, catch the ball, line up for the next one. We’re not a game breaking play away from winning, there are a lot of simple plays that are left out on that field. And I know he has the ability to catch the ball; my question is how come he can’t do it when it counts? Pee wee’s, high school, college, fine he can play in those leagues. All I’m saying is step it up because the hole in the boat might not be getting bigger but we’re still endanger of sinking if you can’t do your part. If Matt can’t look to you because he doesn’t have confidence that you can make a play on the ball then why have him out there at all? Now we’re just giving their DB’s a chance to take a snap off.

I see your point and unlike Kent, Taylor very quickly penciled in as the starting flanker, which made his chest, his head and his jaw swell with undeserved pride. I’m not saying I would have liked to keep Kent instead of Taylor on the roster, in fact I didn’t even mention Kent at all. Of course young players struggle early in their careers, not everyone can come out and have 100 yard games like DeSean Jackson in their rookie year. All I’m saying and it seems as though lots of others here are seeing the same thing, is that Taylor can’t do some of the basic things right, like finishing your route or creating separation from his defender.

Basically if Taylor can't catch more than two passes for 20 yards then I hope he's been working on his place kicking cause that's the only way he's staying on the active roster.
tribfan1 @ 16:32 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Taylor wouldn't be on the active roster if Branch, Engram, Burleson, Obo and Floyd were. There's the reason he's stuck around.
jmreid8 @ 16:49 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
Mikew177- I agree with your points on Taylor and our depth at the WR position has definitely given him more chances then he probably diserves, but my argument was mainly geared toward him starting over Kent, which a lot of people have complained about. This week is hopefully Taylors last week until he either produces or gets benched.
Josh Brown @ 17:14 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008
Clare's reporting Koren "tweaked" a knee and watched practice today.

This team is cursed.
moeflo @ 17:35 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
They said it didn't appear to be serious. I hope not. Oh man would this be terrible news. I will die if he's out for Sunday.
Pilot @ 18:21 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
I fail to see why returning 11 defensive starters makes the Seahawks a team with potentially a top-10 defense. We were ranked 15th last year for the same reason we are struggling on D this year - cannot prevent a 3rd string QB from looking like a pro-bowler, giving up too many running yards, and not getting key 3rd down stops. True last year, true this year. If we have the same guys as last years, why do would you expect a different result?
pahawkfan @ 19:09 - Thursday, September 18th, 2008 Email
The Hawks will turn this thing around. We have too good of a team to be playing like this. I do think if the Hawks ever want to break the top 10 for overall defense they need to get rid of John Marshall. With him coaching our defense I never see us being a top 10 defense or even a top 5 defense for that matter. Maybe Keith Gilbertson wasn't the best choice for receivers coach either. Has he ever coached receivers before?
