Seahawks Insider
Monday, October 6th, 2008
Posted by Eric Williams @ 04:12:55 pm

A subdued Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren talked for about 30 minutes his press conference this afternoon.

After watching the film Holmgren again restated what we already know -- the Seahawks didn't play very well. Missed tackles and big plays defensively hurt Seattle, Holmgren said.

Also, Holmgren said the defense needs to get a better pass rush. Particularly guys in one-on-one situations need to get to the quarterback, he said. Holmgren also said Seattle needs to execute its blitz packages more effectively, with guys not running into each other or running through the same gap.

"I'm not losing faith in them," Holmgren said. "I'm a little ticked off we didn't play better. But you just keep going, you keep plugging away."

Offensively, Holmgren said the Seahawks strayed away from the game plan early because they got behind. He also said the Seahawks may have to rely on its running game more in the future, similar to the St. Louis game where they ran the ball effectively, to win games down the road. Holmgren may look to the blueprint of teams like Baltimore or Tennessee, relying on ball control and good defensive play to win games 17-13. However, in order to do that the defense has to play much better.

"We're going to do what we do," Holmgren said. "And continue to try and get them thinking properly. Get them believing in themselves again. I think the important thing is they know that I still have confidence in them, which I do. And they must have confidence in each other and their ability to get this thing done."

[More:]

Holmgren said Matt Hasselbeck's knee is OK and he should be ready to practice this week. Deion Branch is another matter, however. Branch suffered a bruised heel, Holmgren said, and his status this week is uncertain. Holgren said he believes Branch's knee is OK. Kelly Jennings, who suffered a concussion on Sunday, should be ready to go this week.

Holmgren also said changes will be made, including the possibility of personnel changes on both sides of the ball.

Most of the Seahawks players were gone when the locker room opened up. However, several of the key defensive players remained. Safety Brian Russell called watching the film "painful" and his play in particular "unacceptable."

"We took it on the chin," Russell said. "We watched it and we're going to be a better defense because of it. But you have to go out and fix those things."

Russell said the defense still believes they can turn things around because they played so well last year.

"It's hard," Russell said. "I feel like this is just lip service. We have to go out there and do it. Talking all day doesn't make play for you. So we get a chance on Sunday."

Linebacker Leroy Hill said like the rest of the team he was upset after the game on Sunday. Hill said the team needs to play with a chip on their shoulder.

"Footbal and every sport is about swagger," Hill said. "You have to walk with a swagger and you have to play with a swagger. Right now we are on our heels and not playing with our swagger. We have to find a way to get that back and it all starts with practice."

Listen to Hill talk here.

Linebacker Julian Peterson said despite the poor showing by the defense the first four games of the season, the players still have not lost confidence.

"Not at all," he said. "We just know what we have to do. There's no time to mess around. It's not necessarily a panic situation, but it is almost. So we've got to make sure that we tighten up on our responsibilities."

I have been hearing this every week, except week 3 against the Rams! Come on guys!!! Let's get with the picture here!

Blah Blah Blah...... heard it all before well fix what we can fix blah blah blah ...................GO Redskins!!!

these guys are so enamored as a team with the film. they never want to comment until they've seen the tape, and afterwards, they all say they need to fix that or this. I think they'd rather watch film than actually play football.
Regis @ 16:31 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
A) What did you expect him to say?

B) Can you get audio on the presser? I usually end up missing them live, then have to wait hours for them to be uploaded to the team site.
pabuwal @ 16:37 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
I wonder if DD Lewis will start over Peterson. There are not many more changes they can make on defense because the backups are far worse than the starters.
BobbyK @ 16:38 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Say the truth.

Say something like: We suck. I really don't care about football but I'm talented and have to do it because it pays so well.

Actions speak louder than words and I want to see something get fixed, not just freeking lip service.
BobbyK @ 16:39 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
DD Lewis started at that position the year we went to the Super Bowl. I don't recall JP ever starting on a Super Bowl team.

Well, don't you think someone should look at the evidence before rendering a judgement? You want some hothead who goes ahead and criticizes people before knowing the facts? He's not a fan you know. :)

I'm glad there is official acknowledgement that there is a problem with the pass rush packages. I still think it's the scheme and playcalling, but if in fact the players are just screwing it up (by blitzing the wrong gaps, 2 guys bumping into each other, etc.) then it's still a coaching problem. But if they could fix this problem alone, it would solve half their defensive problems. The secondary would look a lot better if real pressure was put on the passer.

I still harp on the playcalling though. Tampa Bay and Indy (pre-injury) have good defenses with even smaller personnel than Seattle. But a so-called "physical" defense plays off blocks (i.e. if a blocker is coming the defender's way, the defender engages the blocker, reads the play, then sheds the block to make the tackle.) It seems like the Seattle scheme is for the defender to avoid the blocker whenever possible.

That sounds good, but it means if the ball carrier cuts back, or the defense reads the play wrong, then there are holes all over the place for the runner to go, or the QB to step up or escape to. The success of the so-called "small" defense is predicated on the play being read correctly so the defenders beat the blocker to the spot of the play by any means possible, forget taking on the blocker and reading the action on the fly. So you have to read the play correctly and call the right defense for this to work.

But they seem to have a problem with this, and perhaps this is why the defense is so inconsistent. And, at home, with the loud home crowd, it's harder for the offense to audible and thus cross up the defense.

And perhaps there are other weird factors. I read for example that Lofa Tatupu "hates" the headsets used to communicate to the D and doesn't like it when the D-coordinator sends him info. Perhaps an issue? This is the 1st year that the defense has the headsets if I'm not mistaken.
Tompage @ 16:52 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
During training camp, we heard constant bravado about this being an elite defense. I have not seen any evidence that they could even become an elite defense.

They could not stop the run. It appeared the Giants could run any play they wanted, with any running back, and it was going to work.

They could not stop the pass. Their wide receivers with the exception of Plaxico don’t scare anyone, except we made them look like hall of fame candidates. It is lucky they sat on the ball during the 4th quarter because otherwise the passing numbers would have been as ridiculous as the rushing numbers.

There were a set of individual performances that I could not believe. Lofa looked terrible; I have never seen him miss so many tackles. Where was Julian Peterson? For that matter, where has Julian been this season? At this point, I would prefer to cut Julian at the end of the year so we can resign Leroy Hill (our leading tackler). Kelly Jennings looked lost. At least when Josh Wilson was getting burned, he was close to the receiver. Jennings was hardly in the picture when he was getting burned. Brian Russell made a couple of touchdown saving tackles, unfortunately those tackles were made 40 yards down field.

The only top ten aspect of our defense I have seen is their attitude. The players seem to think very highly of themselves, but that is not reflected on their play on the field.
Dukeshire @ 16:59 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
"Holmgren also said changes will be made, including the possibility of personnel changes on both sides of the ball."

May I humbly suggest sitting Russell. Enough is enough. Put Coutu on the IR to make room for Jamar Adams. I would also like to see K. Hobbs in for Jenniings. Peterson has to be on notice. His effort, or lack there of, should be enough to make an example of. McMullin; didn't take long to squander the small bit of good will you earned the week before. Bumbus, your up. Start there, see what happens.
SouthPrairieRedneck @ 17:04 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Yup, pretty embarrasing. It has to be coaching, there is too much talent on this defense for this to be happening, especially after you consider last year.

Lame duck status is likely playing a role nobody wants to admit.
Dukeshire @ 17:07 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Oh, and will someone PLEASE enlighten me as to why Bryant isn't playing. Is his knee the issue? Teams, again so far this year, are running right at them, let's activate the big guy and get a big dumptruck in the middle. I know it's crowded in there with Mebane, Green, Terrill, Rock but something must be done.
BobbyK @ 17:31 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
I really thought Rocky would have a better year just because he will become a FA at the end of the season. He's playing for one last contract.
pdway @ 17:32 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Until yesterday (and, I know, that's a big UNTIL), our run defense was very solid, first 3 games: 106, 93, and 65 yards rushing allowed. And you can argue those are crap teams, but the RB's on those teams (Lynch, Gore, Jackson) are all arguably better than Jacobs. It's our pass defense that has been the issue, esp on 3rd downs against SF, which cost us that game.

SouthPrairieRedneck @ 17:38 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
This team is soft and it is the coaching staff who has made them that way. They have a bye week and the coaches go on vacation and Holmgen gives them most of the time off. They say its a long season and they need the time off....B.S.

These guys play a game for a living...buck up.
ElPerroGrandeIII @ 17:46 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Put a fist in a Seahawks mouth and they'll fall to earth like a dead bird everytime. We've never had any toughness other than an OL for a few years that was led by Steve Hutchison, other than that, this is year 10 of Holmgren's weak in the knee, small and a bit slow, but really lacking all sense of toughness football ...
Dukeshire @ 17:50 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
The secondary is the root of the defensive troubles, without question.

dude, these guys like to watch film so much, they should all be be movie stars.

mcmuffin, what a lost opportunity. here he gets a little love, then his QB gets hurt and guts it out and he's SO lazy coming out of his cuts the DB is right there.

Lofa - let's call him the ghost, he was nowhere to be found...at least not near the ball. i normally like the guy but i saw him run into one of his own guys and it looked like a freakin screwball comedy. it coulda been a blooper!

Jennings? You hungry little fella, cuz you are biting on everything. you are not a rook, please do not start playing like one...again.

F the film guys, man up, grow a pair and go HIT someone!

And coaches, you have GOT to make some changes. If i ran my business like these movie stars played football i'd be OUT of business...

Just saw the play Sando was talking about on his blog. Run by JJ, end of the play the safety comes over and lays out John Carlson. 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with Sando and Tobeck. I think it's not that no one wanted to stand up for Carlson but that nobody saw the play happen. Locklear was getting into it with a giant a few plays earlier so I don't think they'd hesitate to do something had anyone seen the play happen.
yankinta @ 18:40 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Yeah, I want the team to tank. I want high draft picks next year. Here's my Wish List.

1st Round - Shut Down CB (at least 6-1 or higher)
2nd Round - WR (at least 6-2 or higher)
3nd Round - Saftey (at least 6-0 or higher)
4th Round - DT (6-4 or higher and 325 lbs or higher)

No more Midgets. Tim, it's time to change your old ways since the rest of the league is getting bigger and stronger. Your small players will speed will not work anymore. Start cutting JP and your tiny corners.....
BobbyK @ 18:40 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
The pass rush sucks. They get their numbers (sacks) but for some reason, lack consistent pressure.

That means our crappy secondary, which sucks, gets exposed.

I'm too lazy to do this, but someone get me a number for Trufant INTs when he's playing for a contract versus not playing for a contract.

I've never heard anything about Trufant, Grant, or JP being a bad person. However, they got paid and are now playing like they really don't give a crap. They say they care, but you can't tell it by any of their action on Sundays.
BobbyK @ 18:43 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Anyone know of any college kids who are truly passionate about football and winning?

I'd like to start figuring out who I'd like us to draft.

One requirement is that they have to actually care about winning and get mad (don't have to throw anyone under the bus) when they lose.
LVHawk @ 18:45 - Monday, October 6th, 2008
nighthawk2 @ 18:50 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
freedom_X, what "evidence" does Holmgren need to see that he didn't see standing on the sideline Sunday? What "facts" does he not have from seeing the game live? He should have come out in the press conference and said "I don't need to see any film, I burned the freakin' film, I saw enough on the field Sunday". And then said he was benching the secondary, Peterson, cutting McMullen and that he was going to start throwing the ball to Carlson again and get him back involved with the offense.

This team isn't Holmgren's creation, it's Tim Ruskell's creation. Very few guys are left that Holmgren drafted, traded for or were here before him; Walter Jones, Hasselbeck, Locklear, Trufant, Seneca Wallace, Engram, Womack, Bernard, Babineaux, Terrill, Morris, D.D. Lewis (on his 1st go round), Robinson (on his 1st go round). Everyone else Rusekll brought here, including Jim Mora.

"It's hard," Russell said. "I feel like this is just lip service. We have to go out there and do it. Talking all day doesn't make play for you. So we get a chance on Sunday."

Well at least someone on the roster has a grip on reality.

"Linebacker Leroy Hill said like the rest of the team he was upset after the game on Sunday. Hill said the team needs to play with a chip on their shoulder."

He was? They were? They sure as hell didn't show it.

BobbyK @ 18:57 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
RDE - Kerney - good, solid player. Not very good against the run. Overrated just b/c most people value the sack stat over overall play, but certainly not saying he sucks.

RDT - Rocky/Terrill - solid to below average play. Not great at the point of attack. So-so (overrated) pass rush ability.

LDT - Mebane/Green - very, very good.

RDE - LoJack/Tapp - nothing special. When you use a #1 and #2 pick in 3 years on this position, you'd really hope for something better. Says something about the person drafting them.

OLB - Hill - solid.

ILB - Tatupu - solid.

OLB - JP - overrated. Not strong at the point of attack. Not as fast as he used to be. Needs heart.

FS - Russell - sucks. Slow, bad in run support, bad in coverage. Sucks.

SS - Grant - certainly nothing special.

CB - Contract-year-guy - overpaid, overrated.

CB - Jennings or Wilson; pick your poison. After watching either play you'd really like to overdose on something that will kill you.

All you haters need to all STFU. "Go Redskins" "I want them to tank" predicting records for the future... You guys are saying that the players are full of BS when they talk but it's you guys that are full of BS when you say things like that. I understand your frustrations but we have 12 games left!

First of all they do need to get a swagger and start playing with a purpose. They need to get mean and take it out on all the people they play against. Stop worrying and start playing to win, and not playing not to lose.

Our leaders on the team - matt, lofa need to hold it together...
nighthawk2 @ 22:08 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Hey Kuya, I don't know what games you've been watching, but it hasn't been any but the Rams one apparently. When Buffalo handed them their heads guys like you were saying "it's only one game", when they lost at home to SF guys like were saying "it's only 2 games", when they beat the worst team in the league (well, maybe a tie with Detroit), guys like you were talking about a turnaround. Now they get their asses kicked around the moon in the worst loss since Holmgren has been here, have to go back to the Erickson days and a 41-3 loss at home to the Jets for one that bad, and here you are with "we have 12 games left". So, superfan, tell us what you saw in that pathetic beatdown, with the vaunted return of Branch (who promptly got hurt again) and Engram, to think that they are going to get any "swagger" back? They can swagger all they want, I want results. None of these dudes showed any emotion at all during that ass kicking Sunday. Not in the game, not on the sideline, not in the after game press conferences, just the same old b.s. "we've got to watch film and fix things", yada yada. We've been hearing that for a month, and nothing is fixed. And there's no sign it's going to be. So why don't you STFU?
ShermanPilliams @ 22:42 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
Wow ElPerroGrandeIII, are you that much of a fairweather fan/traitor that you would like the face (or is it the chin?) of the Stealer's (we all know what they are guilty of stealing) to coach our Hawks? One of the best coaches in history?... why don't you just admit you want Cowher to have your baby and stop spouting nonsense to the rest of us who still support the Hawks whether they are 14-2 or 2-14. Show a little loyalty.
nighthawk2 @ 23:26 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
I think Cowher is overrated, but even if he is as good as advertised, you wouldn't want a good coach who instills some discipline and attitude on his teams? I would, and I wouldn't care who he coached in the past. To say otherwise is not very bright, because then you're not wanting what's best for the team.

bitterguy @ 23:50 - Monday, October 6th, 2008 Email
the problem with the defense is not scheme, or missed assignments, or technique. the problem is that the players are incapable of making the plays that are required of a good defense. with the exception of kerney (once per game) and mebane (on a regular basis) every player gets engulfed by blockers. dline can't get to the qb and even if the linebackers can somehow get to the running back they get steamrolled by anyone bigger than justin forsett. lofa tatupu is a great guy but he will never be what ray lewis is right now, never mind what lewis was 8 years ago. brian russell is not a dumb player he's actually very smart, he's just slow as molasses and can't ever get to the ball or even stay deep on fast receivers. jennings gets flicked aside like a booger by every receiver he goes up against.

this defense is a finesse defense, which is the same thing as saying they're a bunch of girls playing a man's game and they're going to get their posteriors handed to them by the big strong offenses of the league. there is no amount of technique or scheme that is going to allow them to defeat a block and make a play. they have some athleticism so they'll smoke the crappy teams, sure, but the good teams will slap them around, and doubly so on the road. get used to having to losing to playoff teams until the personnel changes significantly.
armchairzebra @ 02:14 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
I see lots of good comments on specific plays, players and schemes. Perhaps a thought provoking question is in order. Many of these same defensive players have performed at a high level in the past. Is it time for The defensive coordinator to go? And.....Why do we have to wait for next season? We know who the head coach will be. We are on the brink of disaster. A new coach may have them ready for next year.
pabuwal @ 04:48 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
"Many of these same defensive players have performed at a high level in the past."

12 of the 18 QBs they faced last year no longer start for their teams. They went 7-3 in the final 10 games last year, including playoffs. Only one of those QBs currently starts for their team.

Chris Redman exposed this defense as poor and they haven't recovered since.
madpunter88 @ 06:45 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
I've never understood why some people call themselves fans but when their favorite team is losing they turn into vitriolic and petulant children (well, to be fair, some of you might actually be children). The team is losing. They are playing badly. I am sure they are frustrated by it too. What do you want those players to say? "I suck and I should be cut." No, they are going to talk about how frustrated they are, disappointed, will do better next time, etc.

If you are a fan of the team how can you hate every player out there with such passion? One of you listed every player on the defense and wrote how much you disliked them. Another of you wants to fire our current coach and next year's coach before he's even had a chance! What exactly about the Seahawks brings you back to watch them week after week and brings you to this blog if you hate them all so much?

Dukeshire: I thought you knew better than that since you post here so much but you can't just arbitrarily put Coutu on the IR to clear a roster spot. He has to be "injured" as the name would imply. I don't think he is thus putting him on the IR would be tantamount to "cheating." And the fact that you think an undrafted rookie safety is going to perform better than an NFL veteran is wishful thinking at best. You don't seem to know much about how talent is developed.

nighthawk: you were bad-mouthing this team back in 2005 when they were in the Super Bowl so I am not sure why your thoughts matter at all.

I do think some changes will come. And I certainly don't think the defense is immune to criticism. They have been awful. But if you are a fan of the team then you want to see them do better. And you have some modicum of hope that they can get things turned around. I do.
IDHawkman @ 06:46 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
In 2005, everyone did their job on the team and counted on the others to do their jobs. That worked well. Now that you have JP ghosting, Kearny getting late starts and outside rush only an older Bernard who can't get past quicker o-linemen and gullible DBs, you get what we saw on Sunday. I could pick apart the offense in the same way and touch on taboo's like I did with JP and Kearny but to what point. I'll leave it at - Our best reciever is a 38 year old. We laugh at Hold and Bruce because they got older - they are still younger than the "answer to our Prayers" Bobby.

God love him but he shouldn't be starting at 38 anymore. Last year was a fluke and necessity drove it but no one is going to let Bobby hurt them this year. In fact, it is Bobby who will probably be hurt.

Bench Russell.
Cut McMullen.
Bring up Jamar Adams, start him.
Start Kevin Hobbes at Corner, move Jennings and Wilson to alternate on Nickel and tell them if they don't pick up their game one of them is cut.

Increase DD Lewis' rotation with Peterson.
Increase David Hawthorne's rotation with Tatupu.

Bumpus moves up the depth chart.

Start willis at RT.
Rotate Locklear and Womack at RG.

Oh, and fire John Marshall.

Changes, eh? Let's see some.

I think people have a right to be pissed when their underperforming team sucks. We have the talent to be great and I hate it when we aren't coming close to reaching our potential.

Maybe we should be happy when our team shows up and plays like little girls and consistently give up over 30 points per game.

Maybe if our talent level truly sucked, I'd try to take out the positives and how we are building for the future. When you've got a lot of guys around 30 or over 30 who are key components to the team --- there isn't much of a future for them and those key cogs are going to have to be replaces (which will put us in rebuilding mode --- which sucks).

Okay- so because the Hawks ran the ball well at home against the Rams and the 49ers- therefore Willis should be our staring RT...okay. Sure.... whatever. Locklear aint the problem. PC aint the problem. Its killer instinct and attitude. Someone needs to bring it.

Get that bug out of Lofa's ear. Let the D just play. Get Brian Russell out of there. Put Babineaux or CJ Wallace back there and let him lay some wood. Russell looks really slow this year. Maybe its scheme but I think probably not. Trufant has been solid- they are picking on whoever else is there and having success. Maybe Hobbs can be the guy? I'm sure the coaching staff is doing what they need to do though....but why is nothing working?

Someone please force Peterson to tackle with a combination of shoulder pads AND arms.

Need to play well against GB. Build some momentum.

Will someone please return Deion Branch to Dale Chihuly. He needs to use stronger thicker glass next time. That guy just gets hurt way too easily.

Speaking of....sounds like Hackett got dinged up.

You want to bring an unproven rookie safety off the practice squad to start after he has been in the NFL for only four weeks? Do you really want that? In your fantasy, why would they not start Jordan Babineaux at safety in place of Russell since he has actually been in a game before?

Move Sean Locklear to right guard? He is a tackle. Want to move Hasselbeck to tight end while you are changing players positions?

I understand the frustration but making wholesale changes to positions and cutting players is not the way to solve anything. These are talented players who are not performing well as a team. They need cohesion, not to be replaced en masse.

Part of the joy of being a fan is looking beyond the past and maintaining hope for the future. I still have hope this team will recover and play better this season. Giving our practice squad players the opportunity to start is not the way to achieve that. Nice to think someone like Adams could come in and make a difference but that is not how things work. Same with Bumpus.

And the last thing I think this team needs to do is cut Lofa Tatupu's playing time as you suggest. He is the core of the defense and one of the best players at his position in the NFL. If he has a bad game so what? He is an all-pro and the captain. As nice of a preseason as Hawthorne had he is no Lofa Tatupu.

Okay everyone, I think I know what the problem is. It's me. I have some seriously bad football karma going on right now. Every team I root for is tanking, and every team I root against keeps getting miraculous wins. The football gods are really, really angry. There's no other explaination for how the Vikings got a win despite giving up two punt returns for TDs, or for the stinkin' Broncos to continue to get break after break to win their games. Heck, so far this season whenever I turn on a certain game, you can be sure that the team I'm rooting for will suddenly start stinking it up. And, being a die hard Seahawk fan, the football gods are making the Seahawks stink it up all the time. So, the solution is simple; I'm going to go ask forgiveness for whatever I did to make the gods angry, and maybe sacrifice a chicken (or maybe I'll just go eat at KFC - hopefully that's close enough). That should appease the football gods and the Seahawks will get it turned around. My bad. Sorry fellas. If any of you are having the same football season experience, I encourage you to do the same.

Madpunter:

Right - there are no effective rookie players in the NFL. Especially on defense. This attitude of Holmgren's (Rookies don't deserve to be on the field) has kept down our talent level for years. If our veteran DBs are getting torched by a receiver in his first ever NFL action, does being veterans afford them some special powers I'm unaware of to stop him? Ask Hixon.

This is the NFL... you can't afford to sit talent just because it's young.

Locklear has played both guard and tackle throughout his career, including in college at NC State. Our line was too successful with Willis to ignore.

As for Hass, well, his father played tight end for a number of years in the league, so who knows? Personally I'd love to see him line up tight or wide on trick plays with Seneca at QB as we've seen players do over the years with success... but we're too vanilla on offense to try anything like that.

Tatupu? He's a phenomenal player. Who is, without a doubt, having problems. DUI? Headset is gimmicky and "cheating"? Give Hawthorne some snaps and let's see what he can do.

It's not about frustration. It's about winning.

I know three things.
1) You guys give yourselves headaches.
2) The Season is young.
3) We are in the NFC West.

"If you are a fan of the team how can you hate every player out there with such passion? One of you listed every player on the defense and wrote how much you disliked them. Another of you wants to fire our current coach and next year's coach before he's even had a chance! What exactly about the Seahawks brings you back to watch them week after week and brings you to this blog if you hate them all so much?"

It's precisely because we are fans that we're sick of seeing this crap week after week and year after year. Some of us aren't going to sugarcoat it and ignore the failings every week and every year like you and others like you do and view mediocrity or just making the playoffs from the worst division in the league as a measure of "success". No one wants to fire Holmgren, some (like me as well as some in the media) have speculated whether he'll leave early on his own. You apparently don't know the difference. I think the rest of the staff should be fired at seasons' end, including Mora, yes, with the possible exception of Solari. But I wonder why he didn't see how much Sims and Spencer suck and bench them. If he doesn't have that authority he can at least recommend it. Don't know if he did or didn't but it didn't happen until an injury forced the issue. Mora has failed as a head coach before, was fired because he expressed interest in the UW job while coaching the Falcons, and was brought here because he is a crony of Ruskell's in Atlanta. He was brought here as secondary coach to supposedly improve it and the secondary sucks. Not a ringing endorsement of his coaching skills now is it? Bad personnel to work with? That's his patron's fault.

"nighthawk: you were bad-mouthing this team back in 2005 when they were in the Super Bowl so I am not sure why your thoughts matter at all."

That's a lie. I doubt you and most of the bandwagoners were "fans" before 2005.

"nighthawk, i saw one of the worst games the seahawks ever played. we did get our asses kicked, but really do you have to be so negative? if you read my post again i was talking to the people that cheer for another team, wishing the worst would happen, etc..."

I'm no more negative than the media or other fans that are sick of this b.s. every year. And no you weren't referring to those, you refer to everyone who criticises the lack of effort, the lack of adjustments, the lack of heart, and the lack of skill that gets displayed against the better teams in the league, especially on the road. People aren't cheering for "other teams", they're glad for the success of Jim Zorn with the Redskins, a team that saw him what many of us did but the Seahawks front office refused to see. Now we're stuck with Jim Mora. Swell.

"so before you go bashing on others, why don't you put your notebook away that is titled "HOW SEAHAWKS SUCK" as well as your pen and start drinking beer and eating wings while watching football instead."

Cute. Why don't you take off the rose colored glasses and change the stuck record of "it's only one, er, two, uh wait, it's only four games" and realize how far this team has slipped. As Kelly said, this isn't the 2005 Seahawks, no matter how much wishful thinking goes on. I blame Tim Ruskell for this mess.

"oh and btw, i haven't missed a home game since 1998... so calling me superfan is a complement for my 10 year anniversary"

Maybe that's part of the problem. No changes get made in most NFL cities (or MLB cities) until a lot of empty seats appear in the stadiums, and owners feel it in the pocketbook. Paul Allen helped the fans and the city by buying the Hawks away from out-of-state carpetbagger Ken Behring. But it's a toy for him, he let Whitsett run things while he counted his money and opened EMP, and the team went to hell and Holmgren was ready to quit because of Whitsett's power mongering. The execs finally brought it to Allen's attention and he fired Whitsett. Now we have Ruskell doing the same thing, and Holmgren's leaving. Maybe it's time, but it's the wrong circumstances. I despise owners like Jerry Jones and Snyder who think they are GM's and even coaches (in Jones' case) but at least they know what is going on with the team. Allen is asleep and doesn't care as long as the cash keeps rolling in and the seats are filled. This team is a mess, the front office is a mess, and nothing is being done about it. Instead the situation is just perpetuating itself. I don't want the Seaahawks to be a west coast version of the Lions or the Bengals, I want them to be a version of the Giants and Patriots. Sitting back and resigning yourself to more beating worse teams and ass kickings from good teams is not being a fan, it's being an enabler. You have the mindset of the extreme right wing that refuses to see any problem with the government does while they publicly applaude you as a "patriot" and laugh behind your back at how much a sucker you are, while call those who see the problems and speak out about them "unpatriotic" or "traitors". Complaining about the mess this team has become isn't being "disloyal" or "not a fan", speaking out is the only thing we can do besides boycotting the games.
BobbyK @ 10:53 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
I think we have 2 superstars on offense - Matt and Walt.

We have zero TRUE superstars on defense. Kerney is good, Tatup is good (but he's no Ray Lewis in his prime).

Ruskell has had 4 off-seasons and has not provided the Seattle Seahawks a single superstar.

He allowed a superstar to go - Hutch.

He's given some players superstar money (JP, Branch, Grant, etc.) but he hasn't delivered any true superstars to the organization.
pabuwal @ 11:05 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
You should go through the 2006 and 2007 drafts to see how little young, quality depth the team really has. It's sad to think of a possible rebuilsing process - given this IS the rebuilt defense and offense.

Folks, this was the 2nd or third worst defeat in franchise history. A franchise that includes the expansion years and the Flores years. In 1992, the Seahawks went on the road and "only" lost 27-0 against the eventual SB Champs, the Cowboys. That 1992 team was one of the worst in NFL history.
CYRREEN @ 11:17 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
Look, I have been a loyal fan of Seahawks since 70's and I will always be a Hawks fan.

My problem with the team is as follows, In 2005 Seahawks had THE BEST offensive line and THE BEST OFFENSE in the NFL (thanks to Mike Holmgren). As a result of that, we went to superbowl and rightfully so won the superbowl (zebras changed the game outcome). It is abvious, as you saw with NY Giants game, that the offensive line wins games. The NY Giants offensive line make a joke out of our high paid defense. NOw, since 2005 we have lost a few players in our o-line to due incompetancy of our GM, retirement, etc.

My question is what has Mr. Ruskell done to fix the offensive line, nothing. What has he done to provide receivers for Matt, nothing. In fact, he got ride of players who Matt was comfortable with. ie. Djack.

Mr. Ruskell has spent our picks and Mr. Allen's money on the D. The same defense which was completely destroyed by Giants, 49ers, and Bills.

To make the matters worse, Mr. Ruskell is going to replace the hall of famer coach with Jim Mora. The same Mora which has not done anything to be named as a replacemnet of coach Holmgren. in fact, the whole Mora family have not done anything significant as coaches.
BobbyK @ 11:21 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
My bad --- Mebane is going to be an almost superstar (kind of like Lofa - very, very good... but not a superstar in the mold of AP, LTII, Moss, Hutch, Brady, Manning, Allen, Champ, Lewis, etc.).

Nighthawk,
Are you a fan of this team or are you just looking for a writing
gig with the TNT.

madpunter88 @ 13:27 - Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 Email
nighthawk -- I was a fan of this team in 1982 (when I was finally was old enough to know what football was) so I don't quite go back to 1976. But I go back pretty far and that is precisely why I don't lose my mind and spin off into a panic because my favorite teams starts 1-3.

Suggesting that Holmgren should or might resign during the middle of the season is just buffoonish. That ain't gonna happen. He is a HOF coach, I think he has built up enough credit to weather some losing. And he has more integrity than to just walk away in the middle of the season.

Though I do like the fact that my mindset was compared to extreme political right-wingers. That is something I am most definitely not. So maybe if we were posting on a political blog we'd see we actually have a lot in common.
