Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren just completed his weekly Monday Morning press conference.

He said the team will take a look at quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on Tuesday and make a determination if Hasselbeck can practice this week. Holmgren said Hasselbeck , who suffering from a bulging disk that causing a weakness in his knee, must pass some tests before he'll be cleared to go.

"The last medical report is that he's feeling better each day," Holmgren said. "But they have this measuring stick though, before they will allow him to play, that's my understanding. And until he reaches that, then he probably won't play."

[More:]

Holmgren said if Hasselbeck can't play, then he'll choose from either Seneca Wallace or Charlie Frye to start this week against San Francisco.

Holmgren said special teams played well on Sunday that allowed the team to keep the game close, particularly returners Justin Forsett and Josh Wilson. Holmgren also said Will Herring provided a spark in his return to the field.

He also said he felt the Tampa Bay game was similar to the Green Bay game because in both games Seattle could not capitalize on big plays, or had them taken away because of penalties.

Also, there was some frustration that bubbled over on the sidelines on Sunday, Holmgren said, and he wants to make sure the players stay focused. Holmgren did not elaborate on who the rankled players were or what was being said.

Holmgren said Lofa Tatupu should be fine this week. He talked ot Tatupu right after the game and he's feeling much better, after taking a blow to the head on Leroy Hill's hit against receiver Ike Hilliard.

On the play in the secondary, Holmgren had this to say: "We have young guys playing in the secondary. You kind of know they're going to take their hits and their licks. And so if you think they're good enough you have to keep with them and hang in there.

"We don't have a lot of choices. There's not a lot of corners floating around."

Holmgren also said when the defense calls a blitz they have to get to the quarterback for the sack or at least force a bad throw.

Holmgren said Seattle's 39 offensive plays is a low of a number as he ever remembers having in a game.

Seattle's also 31 in passing offense, and Holmgren said he can't remember a time when they've been less than 10.

On the fumbled snap exchange between Chris Spencer and Seneca Wallace Holmgren said Spencer snapped the ball when Wallace was calling out a change in the pass protection, and not on the called snap count.

Holmgren said he thought the Holding call on Mike Whale that negated a long run by T.J. Duckett was more legitimate than last week's call against Whale.

Holmgren also said the team is not to the point where they will start playing young guys and looking toward the future.

"We have young guys playing in the secondary..." WTF? These are the same guys that were there last year. They were almost good enough last year...this year they are a complete joke. Thanks for all you've done coach (Mr. Conservative), but it's time for some new coaching blood in there. Same old crap, same old excuses.
IdahoHawk @ 16:28 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
I know it looks not just bad but terrible. But look at the big picture only three games back with ten to play, and two of the ten against Arizona. So hell no your not going to start looking towards the future. If Kelly Jennings cant stop big plays from happening then we are for sure done.

i was at the game. It was as ugly in person as it was on tv, I am sure! At least we got to cheer for the Rays.

I'm wondering if Hasselbeck is not "dangerously" damaged. This bulging disk doesn't sound good. Will we be looking for a new (read college) QB for next year?

Frank: If you have time for a notebook item on the end zone change at some point I am interested to find out why it is no longer a blue base with the name and logo.

I have noticed other teams have also changed their end zone scheme, Green Bay went to the white lines, ala Notre Dame, and one other team, but I can't remember which one. Has inflation hit the paint industry so much that that is the first area of cutbacks?

Green Bay has natural turf, so I don't know what the Packers' reason is, but does the lack of blue in Seattle's end zone have to do with the new turf?

Almost everything sucks about being a Hawks fan.

Our most important player, Matt Hasselbeck, has a serious injury.

Our best player, Walter Jones, is getting really old.

We've lost 2 of 3 games at home, where we are supposed to be unbeatable.

We still suck on the road.

Our recent drafts have been mediocre, even though we've added some good players (Mebane, Carlson). Just not enough good, young guys.

We're not in the greatest cap situation because our man in charge keeps throwing big FA money to some guys like Deon Grant. Don't get me wrong, Grant is a decent player. But he's paid like he's Kenny Easley in his prime, and not what an above average safety should be paid like (of course, he never would have come here if Ruskell hadn't offered so much). If we throw big FA money around, I wish it would be on a guy who is really a difference maker and superstar.

This is the same drivel that Holmy's been spewing for years. Why doesn't anyone ask him any tough questions? Why does Marshall still have a job? Why do our corners ALWAYS play ten yards off? Why don't you EVER call three running plays in a row? Things like that would be nice. He never has to answer a specific question. I'm just glad that I only have to deal with "aw shucks", "goodness gracious", "bless their hearts", and "it is what it is" for one more year.
bulldog80 @ 17:08 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Mike Nolan would make a fantastic defensive coordinator.
emitch423 @ 17:18 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Nolan is fired by 49ers and Mike Singletary is taking over. Turmoil should be good for Hawks to catch a break this week.

Question for blog: Would you prefer the Seahawks continue on current course to assure a good draft pick or improve, play better for Holmgren's last season and finish 8-8 or 7-9?

I hate to say this, but I'd rather sacrifice the season and end up with a top 5 pick and let the team have a fresh start next season. Unless they have a major run in them 9-1, maybe 8-2 if they sweep the Cardinals, Rams and win Sunday at SanFran, I don't see the Hawks winning anything this season. I hate to be pessimistic, but I think, at 1-5, it's reality.
bassnw @ 19:02 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
First off sign Leroy Hill to an extension. Get the money by cutting Peterson after the season - he has a bad case of Hamlin syndrome - hit the guy and don't bother wrapping him up, then get up and chase him as he continues down the field.

Put Vallos in at center, Willis at RT, Locklear at RG.

I have a feeling Walter may have had all the fun he can stand after this season so we need to look there too.

Time to draft our future QB. Matt may not have many years left with his increasing injury issues.

Need a good corner to pair with Tru.

Put in Jordan Kent, let Forsett have some carries, and lets see what happens. Might turn things around, but at worst we see what we have on the shelf.
Canfan @ 19:16 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Draft picks are so iffy, I'd rather the team wins games. Seattle has had two top five picks in the last 20 years, I believe. One was great, The Tez at No. 3 in 1990; the other was not, Rick Mirer at No. 2 in 1993. Walter Jones was a No. 6, I believe.
klm008 @ 20:07 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Can we trade Branch for a fifth?
Wernie @ 20:46 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Sometimes everthing you try dosen't work, and the Seahawks have had real problems this year with injuries e.t.c. I think Hasslebeck is done for several games, and Seneca needs to step up the pace, Now! When the offense can't make 2 first downs on a drive in row, it keeps the defense on the field. We have enough healthy recievers and our running backs look good and our Tight end John Carlson looks good. The offensive line needs to step up, with Seneca, and the team will start winning again. I liked the looks of the special teams, against Tampa. I think Holgrem is doing every thing he can to win a game, the offense has to be tearing him up. What in world happened to the defense after the Green Bay loss in the playoffs last year.
kriegtoskansi @ 21:01 - Monday, October 20th, 2008 Email
Our DBs are not bad, with the exception of Bryan Russel who is too slow to play every down. Other than that, I really think it is our scheme. If you watch, it looks like we are playing prevent all the time. We never challenge the receivers route at the line of scrimmage, we play 10 yards off almost every down in something that looks like a bad cover 3. We end up giving them both underneath and over the top, and it makes the dbs look hapless because they are starting out in some in-between land that allows the receivers to dictate the coverage. Then our blitzes get picked up every time, which exacerbates the issue.

Also, I think Holmgren is doing his stubborn "We're going to run the offense" no matter what the personnel is. With all the new receivers and the 2nd or 3rd stringers, why not tone down the west coast timing based offense and put in some bread and butter plays and some designed Wallace runs? Give teams something new to gameplan against at least.

To: the football karmic ghosts of the Green Bay Packers
Re: Sorry for last years first quarter

Dear Mr. Curly Lambeau and other Packer Greats. I first would like to apoligize for not being able to list all of you, there is too many for me to write. We the Seattle Seahawks are sorry for any great plays we may have had in the first quarter of last years playoff game at Lambeau field on January 7, 2008. We apoligize for bringing your 2nd favorite coach back to try and beat his former team. But in our defense, we too, seek football greatness. To that end, please reverse the karma curse and ill will you presented on us last January. Enough harm has been done to our image, hearts, and minds. This curse remains and it is tearing up our football team. I strongly urge you to reverse the curse and let our Seahawks play to their greatness once again.

Sincerely,
A concerned football fan

I might be a bit tired because of watching the night game (time at KO 3.15 a.m. here in Finland) but I laughed my ass off. Priceless Orogenic!!!

(This is my first post here, been following the blog seldomly for maybe 2 years, Seahawks fan since I started to follow real football, soccer is more popular here)

BobbyK @ 10:26 - Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 Email
jibo1 - it was after he lost Steve Hutchinson. Only now are the masses getting smart enough to call for his head.

In other news, it wasn't the Green Bay game that showed the demise of our "defense." We played our starters at Atlanta in week 17 and they were terrible against a pathetic team with one of the worst starting QBs in an NFL game (ever!).
hawayanguy @ 11:11 - Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 Email
The way our O-line is playing Matt should just sit out

the season because he will be back on the sideline in

a game or two. We can make all the excuses about

Seneca, Ingram, etc. but unless your O-line can give

your QB ample time or open

a decent hole for RB, the offense can't do anything.

Same with the D-line. No pressure on the QB now you've

given the WR 3-4 seconds to get open and there's no

way that a DB regardless of speed/experience can cover

anyone for that long. That's what happened against the

Bucs. Regarding the O-line, get rid of Wahle, Spencer

and Womack. Wahle is past his prime, Spencer doesn't

have the heart and Womack is too slow. Start Vallos C,

Wrotto G, move Locklear to RG and Willis at RT.

Contrary to current statments we are playing for the

future. Leave the D-line alone, but play young guys

like Red Bryant (who I like tremendously, Mebane

and Jackson alot. Rocky is not the same player and

Kerney who is still a stud has maybe a couple of years

left. Stop the free agency crap and build your team

through the draft esp. your lineman. This is why we are

in this predicament.
