Where to start on a day with multiple story lines?
Let's begin with the Seahawks' health since everything else, while important, is sort of ancillary. Holmgren still doesn't know about the availability of Matt Hasselbeck but he did not seem overly optimistic about it. He said he worked out this morning and is hopeful that Matt can work toward playing, but he will not practice today. He went on to say that he has to see Matt practice since he has missed so much time. Which means he will have only Thursday and/or Friday to show that he is strong enough. Holmgren clarified that Seneca will start if Hass is unable to go. He said that he learned only yesterday that Seneca said his calf flared up midway through the game, and that he had a meeting with him and told him he has to be more honest with him in the future about his health. He said Seneca agreed.
Everybody else except Will Heller is going to try to practice and play, including Deion Branch. Heller has the knee injury and was limping through the locker room on Tuesday wearing a brace.
Holmgren addressed the story I wrote today about Julius blowing up, saying that he talked to Julius and he spoke with the team about how to handle their frustrations. He said Julius was upset that he had been pulled out of the game in the hurry-up offense, and he ended up throwing his helmet and verbally expressing his pent-up anger. He said he told Julius and all the players, if you have a problem with what is going on, come up to me and express what is bothering you and we'll address it. He said Julius told me that has never happened to him before, and it is a byproduct of their 1-5 record as much as it was his lack of carries.
As for all the rumors of Holmgren going to San Francisco, I thought he gave a very interesting non-answer when I asked him this question: If the perfect scenario presented itself, would your big boss (wife Kathy) give you permission to skip the sabbatical? He essentially said he did not want to deal in hypotheticals. Read into that what you will. I know I am.
Holmgren was asked who along the offensive line he thought was playing well, which is a backward way of asking who is not playing well. Playing well: Walter Jones, Floyd Womack, and he said Mike Wahle consistently grades out the highest. You can figure out who is left out of that mix. As for the Ray Willis-Sean Locklear thing, he said they will continue to split time. He said Locklear got 65 percent of the snaps against Tampa Bay, but he is not going quarter-by-quarter.
Holmgren also was asked if him retiring and Mora coming in has had any unexpected consequences. He said he did not. He asked about the coaching staff. He said he didn't think it had an affect there either.
Practice is starting in a bit. Eric Williams will be blogging from that.
