Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren just had his weekly news conference, during which he said Pro Bowl defensive end Patrick Kerney, who injured his shoulder against San Francisco on Sunday, is unlikely to play against Philly this weekend. Holmgren said the shoulder, which was surgically repaired in the offseason, was more sore today than it was on Monday. Holmgren said the real concern is that Kerney is concerned. Usually, Holmgren said, the player says they will be fine. But Kerney said he not sure what to expect, the cause for some consternation. Baraka Atkins will move into the defensive end rotation, though it sounds like Darryl Tapp and Lawrence Jackson will start.

Holmgren said Lofa Tatupu is likely to play, though his practice time will be limited this week. Matt Hasselbeck, Will Heller and Deion Branch are out. Of Branch, Holmgren said that they are just going to shut him down. He said Branch had been rehabbing and then when they tested his heel it flared up again. So they are not going to have him do anything with the hope that the heel heals. Holmgren said it was the heel and not something else.

[More:]

Of Seneca Wallace, Holmgren said that he took the next step in the San Francisco game, and Holmgren hopes that he continues to improve against Philly. He said Seneca is a good QB against Philadelphia because they like to blitz a lot and Wallace obviously can be elusive.

A lot of the session was about the relationship between Holmgren and Eagles coach Andy Reid, whom Holmgren coached with at BYU, then hired in Green Bay. Reid was a grad assistant at BYU. In Green Bay, Holmgren moved him from offensive line coach to tight ends coach to expand his vision. Then he moved him to QB coach. Reid was offered the OC job in San Fran under Steve Mariucci, but Holmgren blocked that move. He then called the Eagles owner to endorse Reid when that job came open. I think the two really genuinely like each other, and it's pretty obvious by the way they speak about one another.

Holmgren said he obviously wants to improve the running game, which had 39 yards on 28 carries. He said San Fran was using a lot of movement to disrupt their running game.

Holmgren said he likes Josh Wilson a lot and sees him getting better and better, but he also wants him to tone it down. He said Josh likes to talk a lot as it is, but now that he has become something of a "media darling," he is really jabbering. Holmgren is reigning him in.

Losing Kerney is huge. He is about the only guy on defense who is consistently performing well this season.

Beating Phily without our QB, best WR, and only decent DL who can rush the passer would truly be crazy.

I doubt it will happen, but it would be crazy if it did.

Another starter goes down with an injury, that's odd.

A perfect example why I argue against keeping two kickers on the roster when a guy like Babin, who can contribute, is cut.

Now is the time for Lawrence Jackson and Darrel Tapp to show us there stuff. Lawrence is a 1st. round draft choice, and has the talent. This is the time and the opptunity to be the man. We have to overcome all of nagging injuries, and beat the Eagles. Seneca is looking better, and the offense is showing spark, but we need more running yards. The Defense is getting back to old form. Go Seahawks!!!

That really sucks. There goes the pass rush, w/no rush, Donovan is a very good qb.

And Branch is 'shutting it down'? What does that mean? Is he out for the year?

Man this season continues to be such a tough one -- 2008: worst seattle sports year ever.

No team has picked up Babin according to nfl.com, he's still a free agent, so it looks like cutting him loose was the right decision.

If they actually needed him, they could sign him if they wanted. It's probably a case of fans being too familiar with their hometown talent - a good pass rushing end should not be unemployed for a day in the NFL. If no one has signed him, then it means we as fans overrated his play, given the huge need and demand at that position.
Dukeshire @ 16:34 - Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 Email
That may be. However, there's no guarantee that Coutu would get picked up either.

Well, that's why the Hawks' are a team, when someone goes down, the next guy steps in. At least it's not like we lost ALL of our DE's :)

GO SEAHAWKS!!! Let's go kick some Philly butt...

I'd like to add that I like that Holmy's opening it up, just go play Seahawk football, regardless of who is on the field. As one #12, who rocked the Dome since '77, every guy active is my guy, and I believe that if called on, will give everything he's got. That said, the guys not playing are sorely missed.

oh yeah....GO HAWKS!!!

i'm sick and tired about Branch being hurt. cut our losses, get rid of him, he may be the best talent, but what good is it if he never plays...its rediculous.
