This was one of the most bizarre postgames I have seen. Matt Hasselbeck was an absolute space cadet. As most of you know, he is always very thoughtful, funny and articulate. But after coming to the podium more than an hour after the end of the game, he was flighty and seemed confused. On more than one occasion, he said he didn't know how to answer a question -- which he never does. He is usually very well scripted and prepared, but he let fly that the only thing that makes him feel better is that the league will be issuing fines later in the week, and some of the Cardinals players are going to get fined. He did not elaborate, saying only that the film doesn't lie. I have a little video that I will try to post later on his explanation about the last interception, and hopefully in that you can see that his eyes are glazed over and he looks out of it.

When he did answer questions, he said he thought he did OK, but not good enough to win. There was some questions about receivers cutting short routes, but both Hasselbeck and Mike Holmgren said the interceptions were more a case of Hasselbeck trying to force balls into small windows. Rust probably played a role, they both said.

[More:]

More than anything, the thing that came out of the postgame is that Mike Holmgren conceded the season. He said now that they have lost the division, their goals have changed. He did not say what those changes are, but said he will think about them overnight and relay them to the players -- and then us -- tomorrow. The players never really responded to what Holmgren had to say, in part because they don't know exactly what he means. I can only assume that one of the big changes is focusing on playing younger guys more minutes. But the players all said they are going to prepare the way they always do and try to win as many of their final six games as they can.

The defensive players said they went from a zone scheme to a man scheme in the second half and that was the reason they slowed down Kurt Warner. That, and they were able to exert a little more pressure on him. Lofa lamented the fact that he nearly got him twice, and Warner always seemed to get the ball off right before Lofa got there. The one time is when tackle Levi Brown caught a tipped pass and rumbled four yards.

Mike Wahle could have a serious shoulder injury. The right shoulder that he injured has already been surgically repaired, and so there is obvious concern that he re-injured that existing injury. He will get more exams tomorrow and they'll know more then. Marcus Trufant had a concussion.

Deion Branch said he felt pretty good. He said the timing was a little off coming back but his legs feel fine. He said he was very emotional during pregame introductions because it has been such a long time since he played. He dropped to a knee and pointed to the sky (during pregame, not during the interview).

There was no real explanation for the lack of a running game, other than Holmgren saying unlike the Cardinals the Seahawks need to be more balanced to have success.

I'll post quotes and that video as the night wears on.

Muscle relaxer for his back?

What overdramatic stuff? Get real.

SharkHawk likes to be a drama queen and super critical of the blogmeisters. He thinks it should be his.

Maybe Hasselbeck was so full of pain killers/muscle relaxers that he wasn't coherent. Wouldn't be the first time for an NFL player.

They only had something like 18 rushing plays by the backs. That should have something to do with the lack of a running game.

I hope the changes in playing the younger guys means Vallos at center and someone else at FS.

Hass gutted it out today, I wouldn't be shocked if he had a concussion on that hit he took scrambling for the 1st down near the goal line late.

Two Words: Charlie Frye.

Risking Hasselbeck is insanity, and Seneca Wallace stinks. Give Frye a chance with the big boys. It can't be any worse than it is now.

I was going to say the same thing vic. I replayed that tackle where he scrambled a couple of times and it looked like he took a pretty good shot to the head. he may have been concussed. He never really through the ball that well after that.

Looked like a concussion to me

Also Frank, unlike the first guy, I am VERY interested in the back stories. Keep em coming you're doin a great job.

The description given above lends its self well to the concept that he was either on significant narcotics... or he had a concussion... or both...

Wallace hasn't really seemed to do much... maybe they should turn it over to Frye for a bit and see if he really has it or not... and if not, move along...

I think they need to let Hasselbeck have a chance to get well... I personally wasn't happy watching a couple of the hits he took... knowing he wasn't 100%

Frye did play and was nothing special - Where were you at the beginning of the season!

Wallace stinks? His receivers dropped passes he put right on the money, including sure TDs.

I bet the fine Hass is talking about is the full-on forearm to the head that Adrian Wilson gave him on a blitz. It was brutal and fully intentional.

He did take some heavy hits today - he wanted to win, wanted to show his teammates how much he wanted to win I'd bet.

Who goes in for Wahle if he's out for the year, Willis?
NickLicatasucks @ 21:06 - Sunday, November 16th, 2008 Email
Hass probably has a concussion. After gaining that first down near the goal line, he wandered in the wrong direction and had to be re-directed from a teammate towards the huddle. Odds are he got his bell rung. Gutty effort though by an overmatched team. Hats off to the Cards, they are a pretty good team this year. The Hawks are not. Five out of six aint bad. Who knows what'll come.

Hasselbeck looked like he had a bottle of whiskey and then gave an interview. He was way out of it. Kind of funny.
mocarob @ 23:13 - Sunday, November 16th, 2008 Email
Wilson about took his head off. Shouldve been a penalty.
nighthawk2 @ 04:23 - Monday, November 17th, 2008 Email
If Wahle is done for the rest of the year, I presume they'll stick with the arrangement they did after he left the game, that is Womack at LG and Willis at RG. Doesn't say much for what they think of Mansfield Wrotto, does it?

Francis the drama queen!

Wallace has improved with every game, so to write him off now would be a huge mistake... Give him the ball for the rest of the season and see if he can flourish... here's to a healthy Hass in '09. I like the combo of Willis and Womack at Guard the rest of the way... maybe throw Wrotto in at RG and push Willis over, sit Locklear for a while. DEFIENTELY give Vallos some PT and get Spencer out of there. Lets give the tough guys a chance, Vallos is gritty, Willis is mean, and Womack is a bull... our "technicians" are getting pushed around in the run game.
