Some links to start your day. Also, the Washington Redskins have returned a portion of their ticket allotment and those tickets have now been made available by visiting seahawks.com or calling 206-628-0888.

Seattle Seahawks

Ex-Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander, now a reserve with Washington, believes he could still be an effective starting running back if given the opportunity.

After having an MRI on his re-injured left shoulder the Seahawks decided to place defensive end Patrick Kerney on the injured reserve, ending his season.

[More:]

Scott Johnson of the Everett Herald says Alexander knows he’s not the player he was a few years ago, and he fine with that.

Gregg Bell of the Associated Press says Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren is in the odd position of dealing with a team that will have to make changes next season, yet he won’t be the one to help evaluate and restructure this group.

Dan Arkush of Pro Football Weekly offers this quote from a Seahawks team insider on Seattle safeties Deon Grant and Brian Russell:

“It’s like two years ago — when the safeties were getting their brains beat out — all over again,” a longtime team insider told PFW. “I think Grant is playing with a knee problem that is a lot more serious than he, or anybody else, is letting on. As for Russell, he appears a step slower, and he was hardly fast to begin with. The lack of a pass rush up front hasn’t helped any, leading to many of the coverage breakdowns that have taken place.”

Peter Schrager of Fox Sports writes about the bad teams out West, which of course includes Seattle.

ESPN’s Mike Sando says the jury is still out on whether the Seahawks erred in not hiring Jim Zorn as the coach-in-waiting for Holmgren.

An honest Zorn, warts and all, returns to Seattle as head coach of Washington, writes Aaron Fentress of the Oregonian.

Les Carpenter of the Washington Post, who formerly worked for the Seattle Times, on Mike Holmgren’s final run.

Ryan O’Halloran of the Washington Times gets the Washington players’ take on Zorn returning to Seattle.

San Francisco 49ers

Gwen Knapp of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that with Shaun Hill, practice doesn’t always make perfect. Hill has struggled at times during practice for the 49ers, but has been a gamer so far in his starting role for San Francisco.

When the 49ers face the Cowboys, two free agents who were not drafted will lead their teams in Hill and Tony Romo, John Crumpacker of the Chronicle reports.

Mike Martz was fined $20,000 for comments he made about the officiating during the team’s 29-24 loss to Arizona two weeks ago, reports Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

The 49ers will start rookie offensive lineman Chilo Rachel, Dan Brown of the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Hill plays under constant pressure with a hands-on Martz watching his every move, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

More Barrows: Hill was named NFC offensive player of the week.

Arizona Cardinals

Edgerrin James, who is playing only a few snaps a game with rookie Tim Hightower elevated to starter, has asked Arizona for his release, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports.

Dan Bickley, columnist for the Arizona Republic, says the Edge is unfortunately living down to his public perception.

Quarterback Kurt Warner’s benching in New York eventually helped two careers, his own, which is being rejuvenated in Arizona, and Eli Manning, who led the Giants to the Super Bowl last season, writes Somers.

The Cardinals will have to slow the Giants run game to have a chance this week, writes Darren Urban of azcardinals.com

More Urban: Neil Rackers earns NFC special teams player of the week honors for his four field goals against Seattle.

The Cardinals plan on keeping Anquan Boldin around for a long time, Urban writes here. Boldin complained about his contract earlier this season. Now he’s showing why he believes he deserves another deal.

St. Louis Rams

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, head coach Jim Haslett delivered an ultimatum to his team after an embarrassing loss to the 49ers, get better or get lost.

Bill Coats of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Haslett will stick behind quarterback Marc Bulger.

Bryan Burwell of the Post-Dispatch says even after the 49ers dismantled the Rams that Haslett is still the right man for the job.

That's the first time I've seen anybody comment on Grants knee. Since the injury he grabs at at least once a game, that I can see. So, based on that little info, I think there is something to him hiding the severity. As for Russell, not exactly breaking news. Eric, will you please forward that article to Frank, he fails to believe Russell is a liability back there.

If Andy Reid is let go at the end of the season it would be interesting to see if the Hawks rethink Mora because our current offensive personnel is set up for the west coast system. Even though the offense hasnt been effective this year adding a top ten lineman in the draft like Smith or Otah along with a healthy QB and receivers could put the offense back on track. I dont think Hassleback is done. He sat in waiting and didnt get alot of wear early in his career and look at the seasons that Collins and Warner are having at their ages which are much older. Resign Hill before the season ends cause J Pete is still effective but on the downside of his career. Other possible coaches could be Bill Cowher, Brian Billick, Jim Fassell and Paul Allen has the money to get any of them. Ruskell Sucks.
smithcharles @ 11:29 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
Russel is a bum and Grant should be on IR so he will be completely healthy next season.
airbags @ 11:35 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email

charles, are you serious? billick?!?

as much fun as that might be (SEE beer commercials), i don't think i'd be able to stomach several seasons of losing records.

mocarob @ 12:11 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
if you haven't heard, Mora is gonna be the coach.
He's a better option than Cowher not to mention the other bums.
Dukeshire @ 12:21 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
Hey, smithcharles, (and everyone else who is putting out all these absurd scenarios) I've got a great idea. Paul Allen, with all his money could hire Jim Lee Howell to be head coach and he, in turn, could rehire Vince Lombardi as OC and Tom Laundry as DC. All from the grave. It would almost make Tim Ruskell's personnel decisions irrelevant. Sounds pretty good to me.

Billick....if he is our coach, then kiss our QB good bye and say hello to the 30 scrubs that he will bring in to throw the rock to the other team.

Josh Brown @ 12:33 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008
Man, this team got old fast.

Looks like Mr. Ruskell might have to draft some athletes this time around.
Kuya @ 12:39 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
The only person on that list that I can trust Charles is Bill Cowher. He's a proven winner and motivator.

But Mora ran the WCO when he was with Atlanta. Every WCO is has it's own identity with each coach. Holmgren's was supposed to be the most similar to Bill Walsh.
oceanic @ 12:42 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
My two options for the first round:

Trade down to the middle of the first round and take OG Duke Robinson or stay put and take CB Malcolm Jenkins. Seattle can get by another year with Jones, Locklear and Willis at OT.

Seattle also needs to use a first day pick on a FS who can cover and a slot or flanker with good hands.

SEATTLE CLASSIFIED ADS

Help Wanted: American football team seeks help at strong safety and/or free safety. Must be good in run support and pass coverage. Being a heavy hitter is a plus. Must have good character, as there will be an extensive background check. No thugs need apply. If interested, please send credentials to Tim Ruskell, c/o Seattle Seahawks, Seattle, WA.

Other areas of employment with this organization:

Dominant Defensive Lineman: Prerequisite - must be able to create havoc on opposing QBs.

Interior Offensive Lineman (possibly two needed): Qualifications needed - must be equally good in run support and pass protection. Must also play with an "attitude."

Wide Receiver - must have good health and playmaking ability.

Kuya @ 13:13 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
Oceanic,
Willis may not come back. He's an UFA after the season.
Sounds like a great draft move. What sounds good is getting Michael Oher to give us another franchise OT.
BobbyK @ 13:33 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
We all have (or will have) opinions on who we think the Seahawks are going to draft.

However, we need to remember that there are certain types of players that we won't be taking.

Michael Oher - for example, is a potential stud left tackle. However, there are personal risks with him that I don't think Ruskell will take on (like him being stupid in class). Whether you or I agree with this does not matter --- this is Tim Ruskell and he has the final decision and I don't see him taking a person who is a risk as far as his character requirements are concerned.

Ruskell likes guys who are good in the community, graduates with good grades, etc. Again, whethere you or I agree with this does not matter.

When I think of all these players available to us, I see us trading down a few times if we can and grabbing a guy like Myron Rolle. He's a stud SS from Florida State. He graduated in 2 1/2 years and is a stud performer at a major school. He's big, strong, and fast. He's a Ruskell guy --- only he's not the usual Ruskell guy who is small or short or slow. He'd be a perfect fit.
Dukeshire @ 13:55 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
...and he could join Terrill's band. You are right though, he fulfills Ruskell's character requirements. Although he is only a soph. I assume he's coming out.
yankinta @ 14:32 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
BobbyK, I'm not sure about Ruskell type of guys anymore just by looking at his track record. Being Smart and having good ethics is good and everything but if it doesn't translate to wins, it means nothing to me.

Take some risks and don't believe all the talks about someone being a risk. As long as your core group is strong enough, a few risks are well worth taking.

But I'm not saying go sign TO or Moss. Just saying if someone cares about winning a lot and have talent, some baggage is ok.
Hawkfan1951 @ 15:16 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
The '09 draft should be huge. With the NFL collective bargining agreement coming in 2010, it will drastically change the way the top draft picks get paid. The owners do not want another "unproven #1 rookie" making more $$ before playing his first NFL game than 3 of their "proven" veterans. Sp the Juniors, and maybe some sophmores, will come out for this draft.

It should be VERY interesting come draft day.

Let me also say, I'm fine with players that have an 80+ character. As long as the veterans can help keep the younger kids from doing really stupid things, after all, their still kids, I don't mind players that have learned from their mistakes, and move forward. I don't mind players playing for a good college and getting a few classes from the 'School of hard knocks" now and then. Most people tend to learn from their mistakes.

Let the 1st criteria be "GREAT Football player..." THEN look at "... with good character." Not the other way around. Mr Ruskell, hellooo!?!?!?

GO HAWKS!
Dukeshire @ 15:50 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
It's not as if this is a team of boyscouts ie.,Lofa and Rocky this year alone. But, as BobbyK said, Ruskell has a certain criteria he requires in a player. Staying out of trouble and attitude is one of them. He's not going to change, for good or ill.
RichmondHawk @ 16:21 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
The solution is draft either william moore ar taylor mays in the 1st round. Both are set not only to be pro bowl players but elite players at their positions.

William Moore seems real interesting. The guys a playmaker and a hitter, in many ways reminds me of Ray Lewis because of his athletic abilities. They showed a few of his interceptions and "elite" nfl recievers couldn've caught the ball better. He seems in the 5-10 range so he could be available. I know everybody's thinking why a safety? If you get a chance to draft that high and its a choice between a player who will be good or great, you'd have to go with great and over-ride the positional needs.
BobbyK @ 16:22 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
Personally, I like the Ruskell character requirements. I've been critical of him in many aspects in the past, but I will defend him in this area.

With that being said, I think he needs to take a chance on a crazyfckr (CF) once in awhile. As long as that type of person is surrounded by people of good character, I think it's okay. I would never want a team of full of people like Ocho Stinko, Moss, or TO.

I also don't think it's a good idea to spend a #1 (especially in the early part of the round) on some talented potential moron. Giving 11 million bucks per season to someone you can't really trust is a bit crazy. I'd much rather give lute like that to a "safe" pick. I think the later rounds are where you can take a chance on some CF badass.
Dukeshire @ 16:46 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
I think there are two types; TO and Ocho are knuckleheads but rarely get in trouble with the law. Then there are the Adam Jones' who can't avoid the law. Seems to me that either one of these, during winning seasons are tolerable but when you lose, they can tear a team apart from the inside. You talk about surrounding them with mature veterans, someone who can show them the ropes and keep them in line. This rarely works. The Patriots and Steelers are exceptions, where there locker rooms are strong enough you don't dare step out of line. Seattle doesn't strike me as having that component. More often than not it collapses like the Cowboys or Bengals, talented teams that underachieve. In my opinion it's an unnecessary risk. I think saying that Ruskell will only take "character" guys excuses his failures as a GM. There are plenty of studs out there who will keep their heads down and bust ass without all the drama.
watsoni @ 22:02 - Thursday, November 20th, 2008 Email
Taylor Mays please. He is a Sean Taylor (r.i.p.) clone. Down with Russel.
nighthawk2 @ 05:45 - Friday, November 21st, 2008 Email
How does being "stupid in a classroom" (which may be something of an overstatment) translate to having bad character? I'd love to draft Oher, as long as he can obsorb the playbook I don't care what he does in a classroom.

This team is never going to improve as long as Tim Ruskell is the general manager. He is an imbicile. The Seahawks have been in a steady downward spiral since the 2006 off season. As long as he is here we will continue to see blown 1st and 2nd round (and even 3rd round) draft picks on guys who underachieve, don't perform but hey, they're great to their grandmothers; foolish overpriced free agent signings and stupid trades. If you want "high character" guys who'd fit in on the Vienna Boys Choir (and play football like them too), well Timmay!s your guy. If you want excellent NFL caliber football players who can win games and championships, you'd better hire a GM who knows what the hell he's doing. Because another year or two or three of Ruskell and we'll be the Detroit Lions of the west coast. We've already got our own versions of Matt Millen and William Clay Ford running/owning the team.

I hope Holmgren writes a book and tell exactly what he thinks of Ruskell and the Hutch fiasco.
BobbyK @ 06:21 - Friday, November 21st, 2008 Email
Ruskell has stated things about being intelligent in the classroom as being something he likes in his "character" traits. I remember him saying that when he took Josh Wilson. Don't get pissed of at me for saying something I know is true because I heard it from the horses mouth. And I agree that some idiot can be a good person with good "character" --- it's just not the Ruskell way. It may be the BobbyK way or the nighthawk way, but neither of those matter at all because it's the Ruskell way or the highway.

oceanic - I would definitely buy that book!
CowboysP @ 07:00 - Friday, November 21st, 2008 Email
"I hope Holmgren writes a book and tell exactly what he thinks of Ruskell and the Hutch fiasco."

Of course he's going to write a book.

What the title going to be?
Maybe "How I got JACKED by Tim Ruskell!"

Get your copy. Book signings at the Capital Hill Book Store.

The book will be on the shelf, right next to NH2's book titled "How I got JACKED by Tim Ruskell, too!"
