Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said in his Monday news conference that center Chris Spencer very well could be placed on injured reserve. Holmgren said they were going to wait a few days to make sure, but he certainly sounded as if they knew what was wrong with his back -- disc problem -- and that he likely is not going to be able to come back.

Same could be true for Mike Wahle. Holmgren said last week that Wahle should be able to play against the Patriots. But today he said that his shoulder is not responding the way they think it should, and if that too is going to be a long-term thing they are likely to place him on IR as well. It sounds like the Spencer decision is more immediate though since they don't have anyone besides Manny Wrotto to back him up.

[More:]

With all the news about the offensive line -- Walter Jones is nursing a leg injury and won't practice this week but will play -- Matt Hasselbeck was asked if he has thought about shutting it down this year, to save his health. He said no. He said you have to have tunnel vision in this case and just keep playing. I asked him if he would reconsider if Walter actually decided to shut it down. Hass gave about a one-minute answer praising Walter but never answered the question. When I asked him to actually answer the question, he said he would not shut it down, but he wanted to say how much he appreciated Walter. He did admit that it was tough playing behind a makeshift line, mostly because he has not practiced with the guys standing in. Not to knock those players, he said, but he acknowledged there is a reason that the other guys are starters, after all.

Leroy Hill also may be out of the New England game. He had the stinger against the Cowboys. Holmgren said he has not returned to full strength and his injury is "problematic." D.D. Lewis will start if Hill cannot go.

Somebody asked me earlier about a report that John Marshall will be fired before the season is over. I have not seen the report, but Marshall wandered into the locker room while we were talking to players, so he has not been fired. I asked to speak with him but was told that he was speaking on Wednesday.

Holmgren addressed some of the stuff coming out of the locker room after the Dallas loss regarding Marshall's scheme. He said that he thinks it was the frustration from the loss boiling over and that it was a natural reaction to that. He said it is easy in hindsight that when a certain scheme does not work to go back and say we should have done something else. He also said, however, that when players say things, the coaches sometimes need to take into account what they think will work, and they may do that this week. But, he said, he can also show the players 10 instances at least this season of the defense blitzing, not getting to the QB and the cornerback being burned deep. Basically, I think he agrees that they should have pressured more, but he thinks the players should take some responsibility for failing to execute the game plan that was in.

Holmgren re-iterated that he is not going to play younger players in place of veterans. He said he told the players that they are playing the last four games to win. He said again that there is really not a diamond in the rough that they need to groom. They know what they have and they are not going to cash in the season. The one tangible change he said he may make is getting T.J. Duckett more involved in the running game.

Hmmm...any Centers hitting the Free Agent market next year?

I think Holmgren should come out for his next press conference, sing the theme to M*A*S*H, and then just leave.

Matt Birk comes to mind. FA Center from Minnesota... do I sense a poison pill... haha

At least Vallos gets an extra month to show if he can be our starting center next season.

If he can improve and develop this last month, good!

If it doesn't seem he can cut it in the NFL, then at least we will know for sure. Then we can give Matt Birk a call and see if he can glue our OL for the next few years. He's still a good player. For cap reasons, it would be nice if Vallos can do the job though.
BobbyK @ 15:52 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
Kuya - that's funny.

Perhaps we can insert a clause into the contract of Adrian Peterson where we can steal him next season. Who cares if he's already under contract. It would be the only fair thing to do. That would make me forget about Hutch. Finally! Until then, Timmy is a moron who destroyed our interior offensive line. All this BS talk about getting tougher in the middle of our OL is crap. We should already be tough there, at least at left guard. Timmay!!!

Wouldn't that be funny?

Jeff Saturday could be available too

Isn't the theme from MASH called "Suicide is easy if you try"?

BobbyK, was thinking the same thing. Now we'll know what we have in Vallos, and if he's just backup material, then draft draft Antoine Caldwell from Alabama or Jonathon Luigs in the 2nd or 3rd round or Max Unger or Eric Unger in the 4th. Interesting Holmgren would say he knows what he's got so he's not playing any younger guys. So with Wrotto sitting on the bench for 2 years, he's admitting that the guy can't play in this league even with injuries to Sims and Wahle because Holmgren went with two converted tackles instead of playing Wrotto. As for blitzes that don't get to the QB, he's blaming that on the players too? Couldn't be that the co-ordinator called the wrong blitz, or at the wrong time? He's blaming everyone but Marshall.
nighthawk2 @ 16:16 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
I meant Eric Wood, from Louisville, not Eric Unger. Sorry.
NickLicatasucks @ 16:23 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
Best case scenario: Steve Vallos becomes the man. We pick up someone to compete with him for the job next year. Maybe its Chris Spencer? If Spencer is done, then we need to get someone else.

Don't get too excited about high priced free agent centers....anyone else remember Ray Donaldson's illustrious Seahawks career? Chris Gray does.

Its rare that a FA center makes a big difference. Too bad the Hawks didn't keep Kevin Mawae around back in the day. He has opened some holes over the years.

Glad to see Duckett may be utilized more. Why limit his touches? The guy moves the pile.
NickLicatasucks @ 16:25 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
If our blitzers are better then he'll call more blitzes, simple. I remember all guys who have blitzed being ineffective. Those guys need to blow up their blocks. They just haven't gotten it done. Even when they do they often miss the QB.
spencerdt @ 16:37 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
"Suicide is Painless".... unless you are watching the Hawks play ball, then nothing is painless. We have got to draft a d tackle who can push up the middle. 2 bad for Tapp we don't play a 3 - 4 because i think that scheme would benefit him tremendously.
BobbyK @ 16:47 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
LeRoy Hill is a good pass rusher. Look at the tape when he played and before JP arrived (and somewhat changed Hill's role). After JP arrived, he has not done it nearly enough and it's stupid to keep dropping him into coverage when he's not that good at it, but is good at blitzing. Seems to me it's Marshall making that call. It's that simple.
BobbyK @ 16:51 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
nighthawk --- I think Holmy is too stubborn sometimes. I remember when we all were talking about how worthless Chris Gray was at RG and he wouldn't give Willis a shot in a game. Willis is/was obviously a better run blocker but Holmy wouldn't change, even if it was better for the team.

Seems the same thing is happening now with not wanting to give Wrotto a chance. It makes me mad that we don't get to see what Wrotto can do! Maybe he sucks, but at least we would know that he sucks. Ruskell talked of him having such a high ceiling when he was drafted. Josh Beekman was a safer pick, but Wrotto had the potential. Well, it's almost two years on the bench (while Beekman is a solid player) and I want to see this damn ceiling potential from Wrotto.
nighthawk2 @ 17:03 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
I've bemoaned letting Mawae go in free agency since he left. And let's not forget signing FA center Kevin Glover, all those good years in Detroit and then the injuries (including a life threatening lung clot) and he had two incomplete years and had to retire. Gray played center most of the time he was here. We've had two good centers in this franchise's history, unless I'm forgetting someone, Blair Bush and Robbie Tobeck.

This is a great start. Now if we can just put Hasselbeck, Wallace, Branch, Engram, and Russell on IR we might be able to see what we have on the bench.
BobbyK @ 17:16 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
In a perfect world, Vallos plays well at Center and improves throughout the last month of the season.

Also, in a perfect world, Wrotto gets a chance to start at Guard and plays well. While we're at it, Vallos and Wrotto begin to build chemistry between them and those two 2nd year players form the nucleus of our offensive line for years to come.

Oh wait, Holmy is going to stick with Pork Chop (who is a FA) even though we know what we have in him. And what we have is an average to below average NFL player. Smart, Mike, real smart (note sarcasm).

Pork Chop is a below average NFL offensive lineman but an above average NFL reserve lineman. Great for depth --- but, jeez, give Wrotto a chance!
BobbyK @ 17:21 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
Shut down Matt, shut down Walt, shut down Wahle, and let our OL looke like:

LT Lock
LG Wrotto
C Vallos
RG Womack
RT Willis

Doesn't look great (or good) on paper, but neither does our '08 season. It will definitely benefit the '09 season though.

freedom_X @ 18:00 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
Vallos needs to get a lot stronger. Looks like he got blown off the line a bunch of times Thursday.

Ray Donaldson actually continued to play well even after he left Seattle (Dallas signed him, and that Dallas line was strong.) Kevin Glover was the "checkbook" GM signing done when Kevin Mawae left (kind of like Hutch, didn't quite offer the money Mawae wanted, and after he left, Mueller waved a huge amount of money at the best available FA center.) Glover was 33+ and his career ended due to a blood clot in his leg?

Holmgrens answers are getting increasingly circuitous. It is certainly understandable as I am sure he is not happy about how the season has turned out. His inference that the players are frustrated and think they see something that is not reality is a little off base though. The players are clearly correct that something is wrong with the system and the play-calling. You don't return all 11 starters from a top ten defense and then end up with the 3rd worst defense in the NFL because of a few blitzes gone wrong. The schemes are wrong, the game-planning is wrong, and responsibility for that has to be on the shoulders of the DC.

Of course Holmgren would never come out and blame an assistant coach. But it is rather disingenous to suggest that the players finally complaining are merely venting frustrations. They see the reality which is a 2-10 record. Obviously the coaching is bad (along with the execution).

Holmgren should say (but he won't), "The players are right, the coaching has been terrible, the players have not played up to potential, injuries have significantly impacted us, our schedule has been harder than ever, and we have had some bad breaks." Instead he comes up with the "we'll wait and look at the video" response as if he is absolutely bewildered by the record.
