Here was Holmgren's response to some of the defensive players criticizing the schemes in the loss to Dallas:

“I did not address it with the players because I didn’t know," Holmgren said. "I didn’t know about it. A couple things happened: after you lose a game—an emotional game, and you guys know this—sometimes players say things that they believe, but it’s not necessarily true all the time. In their frame of reference, they think it’s going to work that way, but it doesn’t. The simple fact of the matter is, this season, we have not taken the ball away very much, and that’s a frustration for our defense. And we have not gotten pressure on the quarterback…and that’s been a frustration. So, automatically, if you lose a tough game [you say], ‘Well, we should’ve done this.’ Or, ‘Heck, Coach Holmgren should’ve called more runs.’ Whatever it is. Whatever we did in the game, it didn’t work. So we should’ve done something else. I think you got to be careful with that stuff. When we have blitzed this season, I could show you ten plays where we went after them hard, and they threw the ball downfield for a long touchdown play. So, it’s a frustration more than anything else. The players care, though, which I like. They really do care. And in their mind, if they think a way is better, I think you have to listen to them a little bit. I believe that. If Matt Hasselbeck were to come to me and say, ‘You know what? I think if we try these couple things…’ I would absolutely listen to him. Absolutely listen to him. And then, if I didn’t think that that was the way to go, then I would tell him, and these are the reasons why. But we’ll try this. I think we’ll do some of that, probably…on defense. But you know how it is, I mean, heck, things get said. How much of it is real? I think after they see the film, which they now have seen, they might look at it a little differently.”

Yes. It's been a really tough, frustrating year!

The locker room is showing the strain of the bad season and is starting to fracture. Those players who complained that they were "built to pressure" and it was scheme - I've been saying all year that they fail to get adequate pressure, and Holmgren appears to agree.

Those guys apparently have forgotten all the huge plays they've given up when they blitz and "just miss" the QB.

Problem against the Cowboys is that the Seattle defensive backs are not physical, so the coverage strategy didn't work well. Not "too small" - not physical. They can't jam receivers and push them off their routes. The big receivers aren't as nifty or quick, so slowing them down in the 1st 5 yards of their routes is vital to contain them.

But tiny Josh Wilson is the only CB that seems to mix it up with WR's and compete for the ball (and of course he has his height limtations.) Trufant and Jennings get tossed around easily even though at 5'11" they have decent height for CB's. They are just not very physical.

Here is a good link for any of us who are looking towards Free Agency and the Draft.

This one focuses on Free Agency.

Holmgrem dosen't like losing anymore than us or the rest of the team. He has all my respect for not flying off the handle, and saying something stupid. The man is a hell of a coach. You know his lips are bleeding from not venting what he really wants to say.

Holmgren is the best thing ever happend to this franchise. Don't believe me, then wait a year or so after he is gone.
SharkHawk @ 21:28 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
I say Holmgren seems out of touch because he is unaware of player comments and it gets deleted?! You need to get a new hobby Frank. Seriously.

Blah, blah, blah, see the film, blah, blah. I'm so tired of hearing about the film. These guys live to watch the film rather than actually play the game
SharkHawk @ 22:37 - Monday, December 1st, 2008 Email
That's why I said he seemed out of touch QB_Sneak. He says the same things over and over (yet nothing changes), and he isn't even aware of what his teams are saying to the media FOUR DAYS AFTER THE FACT. Does he just not care anymore or what?
BobbyK @ 07:43 - Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 Email
If you watched him on the sidelines on Thanksgiving --- you can tell he cares.

He just kept an ignorant DC around and is too loyal to players who aren't always exactly best for the team. Those are his downfalls. Like when he kept Gray at RG over a guy like Willis --- who at their points in their careers --- one was on the upside and better, even though he lacked the experience. One just was too old to be effective, even though he had all the experience in the world. Examples like that.

Our secondary may get torched at times when we blitz, but they get torched most of the time when we don't.
