Recently fired Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli reportedly is in town to interview for the defensive coordinator position for the Seattle Seahawks, according to a report by KCPQ 13.
Another story from the NFL Network reports that Marinelli had been in contact with Seattle's brass about coaching for the Seahawks.
Team sources would not confirmed Marinelli is in the Seattle area, but it is believed the Seahawks are interested in adding Marinelli to the team's coaching staff.
Marinelli has connections with Seahawks team president Tim Ruskell and the team's vice president of player personnel Ruston Webster from his days of coaching defensive line at Tampa Bay. He coached Tampa Bay's defensive line for 10 seasons, the last four as the team's assistant head coach.
The Lions fired Marinelli after he finished 0-16 as head man at Detroit for the first time in NFL history. In three seasons with the Lions Marinelli finished with a 10-38 record.
It is believed that Marinelli wants to return to coaching quickly after his forgettable tenure as Detroit's head coach. Marinelli had an informal interview with Chicago head coach Lovie Smith on Friday for a defensive coaching position with the Bears. Smith and Marinelli are good friends from their days coaching together in Tampa Bay, and share the same agent, Frank Bauer.
Seattle may be looking to change things up defensively after current defensive coordinator John Marshall struggled to get the Seahawks' defense to play up to its potential. Seattle ranked 30th in the league in total defense -- last in the league against the pass and 18th against the run.
It's not a surprise the Seahawks are considering hiring Marinelli. Despite his unsuccessful run in Detroit, Marinelli is considered one of the best defensive line coaches in the league and is known as a disciplinarian who demands the most out of his players.
Departing coach Mike Holmgren also showed an interest in bringing Marinelli in early during his time as Seahawks head coach. But Holmgren was twice rebuked by Tampa Bay.
New Seattle head coach Jim Mora is scheduled to have his first meeting with his staff on Monday.
