Just got the release from the Seahawks, and I don't know if Eric is next to a computer to post this.

Peterson was dealt to Detroit for defensive tackle/end Cory Redding and an undisclosed draft pick.

UPDATE: Ok, I've figured out why Eric didn't have something posted on the trade earlier - he's out of the country. He's in Canada with his family. Apparently they are buying a new family dog since their passed away a few months back. So that's why this wasn't up sooner. The one day the guy picks to be away from his computer the Hawks trade J.P. to Detroit.

Here's the release ...

Seahawks Trade Linebacker to the Detroit Lions
Renton, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks have traded linebacker Julian Peterson to the Detroit Lions for defensive tackle/end Cory Redding and an undisclosed draft choice in next month’s NFL Draft.

Peterson signed with Seattle as an unrestricted free agent from San Francisco before the 2006 season. During his three years in Seattle, he started 47 of 48 games, collected 249 tackles (199 solo), 24.5 sacks, three interceptions and was named to the Pro Bowl after each season.

In his nine years in the NFL, Peterson has totaled 714 tackles (499 solo), 46 sacks, eight interceptions, 48 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries.

“The entire Seahawks organization greatly appreciates the contribution that Julian has made to our football team and to this community,” said President Tim Ruskell. “He has exemplified the highest standards of excellence and character both on and off the field. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the Seahawks organization and we wish him well with his new team, the Detroit Lions.”

Redding was originally drafted by Detroit in the third round (66th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft and started 77 of 86 career games, collecting 306 tackles (204 solo), 16.0 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in his six seasons

“Cory Redding is a guy we’ve had our eye on for some time,” said Ruskell. “We liked him coming out of Texas because of his versatility to play inside and out and also because of the type of person he is. This gives us another big, physical presence along the defensive line and someone we can play at multiple positions.”

There is a story in the New York Daily News this morning that says the Seahawks, Saints and possibly the Falcons have expressed an interest in trading for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, who missed the Super Bowl and the latter portions of the season with a broken leg.

UPDATE: 9:32 AM -- I am told there is not any legitimacy to the rumor.

Savage confirmed that the Seahawks gave Cleveland a sixth-round pick for Frye.

"In May, June over the summer, I've stayed in contact with a number of teams who expressed interest in either Charlie and/or Derek. I kept them abreast of our situation, feeling at some point we would move one of those two players. When I came down here a week and half ago, I mentioned we had possibility of bringing Ken (Dorsey) back. Because I felt like it was a realistic possibility, there were still strong signals that there was interest in either of the 2 top quarterbacks we had."

"As an organization, we appreciate everything Charlie has done. He worked as hard as he could work, he did everything he could do. He's been a good soldier all the way through. We certainly don't wish him anything but the best of success out there. Several of the teams I talked to were quarterback-coach, head coach-driven type teams. I think that's a positive for him to go into a situation with a Mike Holmgren. I'm sure Charlie and Trent Dilfer will talk some about the positive situation that it could be for Charlie."

Have been out of pocket most of the day and dictating stuff to our editor, Dale Phelps, as it has become available. I finally got in front of a computer after we had a teleconference with Tim Ruskell. But the highlights are as follows:

-- Ruskell said this deal for Charlie Frye came together quickly. They had targeted him earlier but the talks had fallen off once Frye won the starting job in Cleveland. Once he had the poor performance on Sunday, the talks were revived and the Seahawks, according to Ruskell, felt like Frye was the best guy available to fill the third QB role that they obviously needed. He also said this is more of a long-term deal not meant to have an immediate impact.

-- No, this had nothing to do with the DJ Hackett injury and it is very unlikely that Seneca Wallace will be used as a WR in Sunday's game. This was something they had been pursuing for some time and probably would have been even if Hackett had remained healthy.

Frank’s quick take on the Fisher trade:

With Darryl Tapp taking over Fisher’s starting spot, Fisher was getting only about 15-20 percent of the snaps he got last year. And with the acquisition of Jason Babin and Ellis Wyms, who both can slide to the defensive end spot if needed, the Seahawks felt Fisher was expendable. Particularly for a guy who -- while not making any noise --could not have been pleased about losing his role.

The Seattle Seahawks are on the verge of acquiring Cleveland Browns quarterback Charlie Frye for an undisclosed draft choice.

Frye, 26, will fill the roster spot vacated defensive end Bryce Fisher, who was traded today to the Tennessee Titans for an undisclosed draft choice.

He was not acquired so the team can move backup quarterback Seneca Wallace to wide receiver in the wake of an ankle injury to D.J Hackett. Rather the Seahawks have been looking to get a third quarterback since they released David Greene after the fourth preseason game.

Ken Dorsey, who was in the Browns’ training camp, visited the Seahawks last week but was back in Cleveland on Monday and could now be re-signed by the Browns to replace Frye and help mentor rookie Brady Quinn.

Frye, in his third year out of Akron, was the starter for Cleveland in the season opener Sunday against Pittsburgh. He completed four of 10 passes for 34 yards and was sacked five times in a 34-7 loss. He was replaced by former Oregon State quarterback Derek Anderson. He started 13 games for the Browns last season.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Bryce Fisher, who does a weekly show on KJR-AM, told co-host Dave Mahler today that he has been traded to the Tennessee Titans.

Fisher’s agent, Peter Schaffer, confirmed the trade and said it was for a draft pick. Schaffer said Fisher did not ask for the trade and was happy with his role in Seattle.

Fisher, a 30-year in his seventh NFL season from Air Force, had been relegated to a reserve role this season when Darryl Tapp won the starting right-end job and the team acquired Patrick Kerney in the offseason.

Fisher, a Renton native, joined the Seahawks from St. Louis after the 2004 season.

Here is the deal as I understand it: The Seahawks sent an undisclosed, conditional draft pick to the Jaguars in return for RB Alvin Pearman, who was likely to be waived anyway, as well as an undisclosed, conditional draft pick coming back. To make room on the roster, the Seahawks will release maligned QB David Greene, meaning for right now they will have only two QBs on the roster. Some would probably argue they had only two QBs on the roster before, the reason he will be cut. As some of you have said in the past, if they get down to Greene playing their season will be kaput anyway, so better to take the chance and get a look-see at some other guys along the way.

The Seahawks have traded an undisclosed draft pick for Jags RB Alvin Pearman, and they will waive David Greene, keeping only two QBS on their roster for now. I wanted to get this out to you and will do more of an analysis in a few minutes.

Here are some comments that Jason Babin provided for reporters in Houston after he found out he was traded.

"I heard that I'm going to Seattle," Babin told reporters. "We knew it was a possibility. It's the way football goes. Just do what you can while you're here."

"I'm a little shocked," he said. "Maybe I'm just shocked now, and I don't really have a wow emotion yet because I just found out. But it's still football. I'm still playing football. I'm still in the NFL so I'm happy."

He said the Seahawks told him they liked his pass-rushing ability.

"Seattle, they said, 'We're going to give you some chances to do some damage,'" he said. "So hey, time to go up there and rush the passer."

Here's a couple shots of Jason Babin.

I spoke with Roosevelt Barnes, the agent for Michael Boulware, who said that Boulware was very happy with the deal that sent him to the Texans for Jason Babin. He said that Boulware could see that with all the money that the Hawks spent on Deon Grant and Brian Russell in the offseason that his time was going to be limited, and that Tim Ruskell was kind enough to deal him to a place where his career could continue and he could see some playing time. With injuries to many of the Texans' defensive backs, Boulware should be able to contribute immediately. "It's a win-win trade for both sides," Barnes said. I also asked Barnes if Boulware's "hamstring injury" was a smokescreen because the deal was in the works, and he said it was a legit injury but that he will be ready for the opener.
