Here are some of the defensive ends the Seahawks looked at on Tuesday, in case Patrick Kerney is done for the season. None of them certainly are as well known as Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.

Patrick Chukwurah

Sean Conover

Angelo Craig

Kevin Huntley

Al Wallace

Kerney had surgery earlier today but there is no word yet on what they determined.

John Clayton reported that the Seahawks chose Billy McMullen from among a group of six wide receivers the front office worked out today.

Here is a bio on McMullen, who has played with the Eagles, Vikings and Redskins.

Since they will have only three wide receivers on their roster, along with Seneca Wallace, you have to wonder if the Seahawks plan on signing somebody else now that they have waived Jordan Kent, particularly since McMullen does not have any NFL experience returning punts and/or kickoffs.

Should be interesting to see if Kent, as well as Justin Forsett, clears waivers so that they can be placed on the practice squad.

The other five receivers who they worked out, according to Clayton and NFL.com, were Samie Parker, Mark Bradford, Devale Ellis, Mike Hass and Michael Gasperson. Joe Horn worked out in Tennessee today and Koren Robinson and Reche Caldwell were not contacted by the Seahawks.

QB Ken Dorsey visited the Seahawks at some point on Monday, though no signing is imminent. That does not mean, however, that Dorsey will not be signed, only that he is not going to be signed right away. He is the only quarterback to have visited the Seahawks so far to fill their third spot.

05 12 2007 Tryout Breakdown.jpgRod Gardner is the only first-round draft choice to have a tryout with the Seahawks since we started tracking tryouts April 20, 2006. Nineteen current Seattle players had tryouts. None is a starter. Five were designated for NFL Europe, which means they probably won't win roster spots. Of the 19, Derek Rackley probably has the best shot at earning a roster spot. I've counted 98 tryouts overall during that time. The chart shows how many of those were drafted by a certain round. Note that 56 were undrafted. This is about what we should expect.

I have counted 10 "visits" during this time. Higher-profile players make visits. Lower-profile players get tryouts. Four current players visited the team since April 20, 2006: Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Marcus Pollard and Patrick Kerney. Other visitors included: Cooper Carlisle, David Carr, Kris Dielman, Daniel Graham and Sean Mahan.

Teams routinely bring in players for tryouts to keep abreast of available talent should injuries create a need during the season. They'll often bring in a few players at a given position on Tuesdays (during the season). Most of the time they won't sign any of them. Note: Our 33-category roster, updated today, lists all tryouts and visits.

QB Derek Devine, K Tyler Jones, RB Joe Rubin and LB Marcus Rucker signed two-year deals with the Seahawks. Each had been in camp on a tryout basis. I'll update this entry with a new roster once the information is inputted. LS Matt Overton was also in for a tryout, but the Hawks did not sign him. The team has two other snappers in Derek Rackley and Thomas Gafford.

Update: New roster here

Five players are here for tryouts during minicamps: Tyler Jones, a kicker from Boise State; Derek Devine, quarterback from Marshall; Joe Rubin, running back from Portland State (and Foss High School in Tacoma); Marcus Rucker, linebacker from Rice; and Matt Overton, snapper from Western Washington.

Former St. Louis and Jacksonville DE Brandon Green paid a free-agent visit to Seattle this week. He has 3.5 sacks over the last two seasons, both with the Rams. The Seahawks, having released Grant Wistrom before watching Joe Tafoya sign with Arizona, will add depth at the position heading into training camp. Green had a knee injury early in his career. The Rams describe him as a "high-motor" guy. Green started the final five games last season.

Thanks to the Buffalo Bills for providing a list of rules governing free-agent visits and tryouts. Among the highlights: These meetings can last no longer than two days. They must be reported to the league on the first day. Not on the list: The visits and tryouts are then listed on the waiver report distributed daily to all league clubs. This allows the Seahawks to see which players another team might be looking at, etc.

Today is a travel day. My flight gets into Chicago sometime around 5 this afternoon (Chicago time). I'll check in with any updates at that time. We can pass along that DT Lynn McGruder has been signed to a future conrract. The team also brought in a couple of players for tryouts: LS Thomas Gafford and T Steve Morley. Also, former Hawks DE Jeb Huckeba had a visit with Dallas.

Just an FYI: In addition to Pete Hunter, the Seahawks tried out Tony Beckham, formerly of the Titans. We'll add him to our list of tryouts in the expanded roster as time permits. Mike Holmgren is about to begin his press conference now, so I'll probably drop in.

CB Rich Gardner, a former third-round pick of the Titans, is on his way to Seattle. The Seahawks had him in for a tryout in late October. Sounds like they'll take another look at him tomorrow and consider signing him in the wake of Marcus Trufant's injury.

This is not a good time for Trufant to have suffered a high-ankle sprain, which is how Mike Holmgren described the injury. We'll get a more definitive diagnosis tomorrow. I'm hearing there wasn't a break, but that the injury is bad enough to threaten his season. It's late enough in the season that injured reserve will be a consideration, particularly for a cornerback. It's not like he's a guard who can tape it up and give it a go. He needs to be able to sprint, cut, turn and do those things. Stay tuned.

The Seahawks have released DE Robert Pollard, perhaps making room for a defensive back. I would expect them to be adding a corner given that Marcus Trufant could be out for a while with an ankle injury. We have nothing definitive about how long Trufant will be out, but the initial word was a high ankle sprain, and those things can take weeks.

As for corners, the team has a few options. Gerard Ross is on the practice squad. The team could go after someone on another practice squad. Several free-agent corners have been in for tryouts this season. One of them, Dexter Wynn, recently signed with Houston.

Others who remain available (date of visit in parenthesis): Alphonso Hodge (12/6), a 2005 fifth-round pick of the Chiefs; Patrick Body (10/31), undrafted; Josh Lay (10/31), a 2006 sixth-round pick of the Saints; Rich Gardner (10/31), a 2004 third-round pick of the Titans; Dennis Davis (9/26), undrafted; Leigh Torrence (9/26), undrafted; Ahmad Treaudo (9/26), undrafted; Jason Horton (9/26), undrafted; and Chris Johnson (9/26), a 2003 seventh-round pick of the Packers. Wynn visited Sept. 5.

I'm pretty sure the rest of those guys are available. Let me know if you have learned otherwise.
