Post-Sonics Watch
Feeling lost without your Seattle SuperSonics? Seattle-area NBA fans face their first season without an NBA team in 41 years. Primarily, our coverage here will focus on the City of Seattle’s attempt to bring the NBA back to Seattle. But we also will provide updates on the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and area players plying their trade for other teams in the NBA.

Eric Williams covered the Sonics' last season in Seattle. A Tacoma native, Eric graduated from Mount Tahoma High and the University of Puget Sound.

Keeping an eye on the NBA and Seattle's efforts to get back into the game

With the Sonics training camp set to begin on Monday, the team plans to release its roster invitee list tomorrow (Thursday). I’ll have the full list along with a short story. And I plan to write a preview looking at some of the main story lines heading into camp, as we make the switch to reporting what is happening on the basketball floor.

I’ll have daily updates from training camp starting next week, including interviews, injury updates, analysis on how guys are playing at practice and other tidbits. What else are you interested in knowing next week? Let me know in the comments section and I’ll try to address your concerns.

I also will be adding to the resource list on the right side of the page links I think will be helpful to provide more information throughout the year, including statistical breakdowns and analysis. I’ll let you know when I start to post those links.

I’m looking forward to covering camp, but I’ll keep you updated with what is happening on the arena front as well, so stay tuned.

For now, check out these links.

The Oklahoman columnist Berry Tramel talks about the City of Seattle’s battle with the Sonics over KeyArena.

The big news of the day is The Matrix, Phoenix’s Shawn Marion has said that it’s time to move on and wants to be traded.

According to the rumor mill the Los Angeles Lakers are interested, and willing to ship Lamar Odom to the Suns.

TrueHoop’s Henry Abbott has a pretty good analysis of the Marion situation here.

Shawn Stockton, the nephew of NBA legendary point guard John Stockton, has accepted a scholarship offer to play basketball at the University of Montana according to this report.

I am really interested in what role Westhead is intended to play as an assistant? Does PJ intend to divide up specific responsibilities? How much influence would Westhead have over the offense, particularly the fast break component?

i am definitely looking forward to the start of camp and the season.also looking forward to your reports Eric. Maybe I can get away from this feeling that I am being robbed whenever the arena issue comes up. But someone is trying to do some stealing. either money or the team.
Barry Tramel was just a dud. flatter'n a cow pie on a hot summer day.
interesting question from psheehy about westhead. what do you think?

by the way - re the arbitration/lawsuit thing-the city hsas a strong argument if they can show that the specific performance clause was an item they bargained and paid for. the lease was for a shorter term than the City wanted. to get that shorter term the team had to allow the specific performance clause to be included. it is a essential part of the bargain. I don't see how the team can weasel out of the bargain now even if they could show that it is not a good bargain any more.
As Barry Tramel said this whole thing is an example of Oklahoma oil money at work. But , predatory capitalism some times bit the hand that feeds it.

I think having Westhead on board gives the Sonics another innovative mind on the staff with a wealth of NBA experience. P.J. and Westhead have known each other for over 30 years, so the move would give Carlesimo a trusted person to look to when making tough decisions.
The Phoenix Mercury averaged 95.8 ppg in winning the WNBA title, so Westhead knows how to play uptempo and get his teams to put the ball in the basket.
Overall, I think it makes Seattle's bench stronger, especially on game nights.

Anxious to hear about Swift and the progress he has made.

I work downtown Seattle and you'd feel a certain buzz about this upcoming season despite the arena situation. Isn't Durant suppose to be the west coast Jordan second-coming? I appreciate your loyal coverage of the Sonics and looking forward to the indepth detail you're providing of the Supes for us!

Eric, your Tramel link took me to their sports front page. The article you mentioned isn't there. I then searched Tramel's archive on the site & couldn't find it there either. The only think I found from him on the Sonics was dated 9/2.

I believe it was a video on the right side of the page - check the video archive moo.

Moo: I switched the Berry Tramel link so it sends you straight to the video. It should work now.

I'd like to know how Wilcox' offensive game has developed, meaning his back to the basket post moves and mid range shot. Also, I'd like to know how many boards Swift is grabbing - it'd be nice to hear he's a beast in the middle.

If Swift becomes anything like the player he was in high school then our center problems will be solved. As for Wilcox, I know that he has shown flashes. Whats the key to his success this year? How is he going to be incorporated into the offense more then the previous year? Seems to me consistency will be key for him. He needs that soft touch on layups and jumpers to go along with those monster dunks.

Eric,

With the departures of Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, I'd like to know who you see stepping into a leadership role on the team as a whole. I know Kurt Thomas and the other guys are brought in for veteran leadership at their individual positions but who's taking charge of team morale and helping keep training camp productive. The team lost both of their undisputed leaders and I think this is a big key in forcasting how our season might go. This might be Kevin Durant's team now but he can't be expected to fill such an important and veteran role.

Definitely interested to get a progress report on Swift. Also curious to hear if Delonte is being utilized as a PG or SG or both.
