Primarily, our coverage here will focus on the City of Seattle’s attempt to bring the NBA back to Seattle. But we also will provide updates on the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and area players plying their trade for other teams in the NBA.

Keeping an eye on the NBA and Seattle's efforts to get back into the game
Monday, October 1st, 2007
Posted by Eric Williams @ 08:17:07 pm

The Seattle Sonics media day is behind us and I’ve put together a collection of sound bites from players, coaches and fans.

New Sonics head coach P.J. Carlesimo had some interesting things to say about this year’s team and the opening of training camp, which starts in earnest on Tuesday.

It appears all starting spots will be up for grabs, which will make for a competitive training camp this season. Listen to Carlesimo’s conversation with the media here.

Sonics rookie Kevin Durant seems to be settling in and looking forward to getting things going. Listen to his conversation with the media here. Durant talks about Greg Oden’s injury and the possibility of being a playoff contender this season.

Each player was available for interviews during 20-minute intervals. I got around to talking to most the players, and I’ll provide more audio from media day this week.

For now I’ll leave you with conversations from Nick Collison and Earl Watson. Collison wants to earn a starting spot and could take on more of a leadership role this season with Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis gone.

Watson shares his thoughts on rookies Durant and Jeff Green, and looks forward to the competition in training camp.

Robert Swift looked healthy and seemed to be carrying the weight well. Luke Ridnour was in good spirits, and Wally Szcerbiak said he ankles are healthy.

In other news, two Sonics season ticket holders filed a lawsuit against the team claiming the new team owners sought to defraud ticket buyers with assurances they would keep the team in Seattle.

Read more about the story here. And you can also hear from one the plaintiffs, lifelong Sonics fan Carolyn Bechtel, shown at the right, here. The suit was brought forth in part with the help of Save Our Sonics and Storm. Brian Robinson of Save our Sonics talks about the suit here.

That’s all for now. I’ll have an update on the first day of training camp tomorrow.

Yay, go lawsuits!!!!!!

I wish the Save Our Sonics idiots would realize that today was the worst day to file their fake lawsuit.

Why? Because the fact that current season ticket holders are calling the team a fraud, keeps others from buying tickets. An empty arena fuels Clay's decision to move the team.

This lawsuit is baseless. I, under the same assumption as those other people, purchased my season tickets as a member of the emerald club. This simply guarantees that if I continue to renew my season tickets - for the next three years, my price will be the same as it was last year. It gives no guarantee that the team will be here, it does not imply that, and it does not require me to purchase tickets over that period of time. It's not a personal seat license like we had to buy at Qwest.

Comparing the emerald club to the request from the team to reduce the number of years required in a suite lease is irresponsible journalism. Suite leases are 3, 5 and 7 year deals, requiring the purchaser to pay out the term of the lease. The emerald club allows you to buy your season tickets at a price that was promised by the team, as long as I continue to buy. There is no requirement to buy - it's my choice.

These two idiots who are filing this lawsuit, and anyone who joins them - along with the ambulance chaser who is representing them, have no basis for a lawsuit. I am guessing the selection of an ambulance chaser is because no credible attorney would take this case, because it's a waste of time. No wonder our court system is tied up with lawsuits that are brought by idiots and have no merit - keeping the cases with merit out of the courts.

Mr. Robinson - didn't you say that it would be foolish for a team to sue it's fans? Why do you think it's different for you to encourage people to sue the team for no reason. The team would have a better chance without your "organization" getting involved. But seeing you on TV is pretty cool - I love seeing real life cartoon characters talking about something they really know nothing about.

Please just go hang out with your new friend Chris Van Dyk, and pretend that both of you were not beaten up in high school, and that you matter in society. Please just go away and keep your fingers out of this.

If he wants to move this team, he will try to do it. The city and the NBA will ultimately decide what will happen in this case. All we can do is get excited about this team, and support them - and attend games - to show the city, clay and the NBA that this market can still support a team.

But you already knew that would disrupt ticket buying - that's why you decided to file this lawsuit today. On media day - when attention could have been on the next great superstar combo in the NBA. Nice job. Moron.

If you, Mr. Robinson, or your little buddy Chris want to email me directly - feel free, I would love to talk to you directly. markloefler527@hotmail.com

"...simply guarantees that if I continue to renew my season tickets - for the next three years..."

"...gives no guarantee that the team will be here, it does not imply that..."

Doesn't your first statement explicitly imply that the Sonics are going to be playing in the same area three years from now? Why would anyone renew tickets for a team that moves to Oklahoma?

Mloeffler -

I make decisions each day which I feel are in the best interest of the franchise. In the end because I am active I have to live with those decisions and the end results. I am sure that, if in the end we lose there will be chances to second guess actions but in the meantime we take well thought out action based on a lot of solid information.

The decision to time our release today was a tough one, for many of the reasons you described. Do we want to stear attention from basketball? NO.

Right now it is clear that they are doing everything in their power to stifle interest in this club. On draft lottery day Mr. Bennett was in Kansas City looking at arena options, then they filed their arbitration case a week before camp opened in an underhanded manner designed to allow Clay to slink in and out of town. With them taking those actions a simple blanket endorsement of "we won't touch the basketball product" is not appropriate. We are at war here to save these teams.

Read Clay's arbitration request and then read the court filing for our case. Then tell me which one is meritless. It is not a bit meritless and the attorney is not an ambulance chaser. His firm is highly regarded as one of the very best in the state and it was not the only one to want this case.

The comment I find most disheartening is this "All we can do is get excited about this team, and support them - and attend games" I have to assume that you are either a complete fatalist, or that you work for the team and were paid to write this. Believe me that happens.

We have a TON of power in this issue. The first step is protecting the three years because let me tell you, if they apply for relocation in October it does not matter a damn bit if we sell out every game this season. It does not matter if Kevin Durant averages 30 & 10 and we go to the WCF because they will have already made their move.

We'll hold those three years and ensure that they are both costly and embarassing. In the meantime we'll ensure that an arena solution and new ownership materialize before a chance for a relocation application happens. I encourage you to continue buying your tickets.

Nobody should just buy their tickets and be silent. Buy your tickets. Attend games with signs and protests, call the mayor, write the league, and demand that our political leaders provide a long term solution. That is the answer.

Go Supes! Less than a month until tipoff...

I am so excited to see this young team play, and grow... I just hope we get to see it here, and not OK City. That being said with this team being so young, and what seems to have many young exciting athletic players, I wish we could actually read about basketball, and not all this crap about lawsuits, sonics leaving, etc... So here is to a good season, and the hope that this moving stuff gets settled sooner then later, so we can actually enjoy this team!
mloefler527 @ 12:15 - Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 Email
First, SOS guy, I don't work for the team. I had a conversation with my account rep yesterday, who shared with me that because of your actions, it has become harder for them to sell seats, and, make a living for their family. So, if you are trying to hurt Clay, you are hurting a number of others along the way. I hope you can feel good about that.

I also get a chuckle that you believe they pay someone to search internet sites and combat the stupid things you do. That's a bit paranoid. They are probably a little busy trying to make a living getting ready for the season and trying to sell tickets.

Second, he has said publicly and in staff meetings that the team is not for sale. He feels as if he has purchased 1/30th of a global empire called the NBA, and he is not going to give that up.

Third, call the Mayor? What is he going to do. The Key Arena is not a good NBA arena. That's not an option for this owner. It's funny how the Mayor keeps saying "he won't call me". That's because he has nothing to say to the broken Key Arena Record that is the Mayor. It's not a solution. It wasn't for the last ownership either.

Finally - when I bought my tickets, there was not a two way commitment from the team. While they said they would hold their prices for the next three years, they did not tell me, in anyway, that guarantees that they will play here for three years. It was never even implied.

If I go to a movie, and the movie for some reason does not play - I simply get my money back. I don't sue the theater for failing to perform on the ticket buying contract - because there is no contract.

I am not forced to buy these tickets. I have not signed a long term deal with them to buy the tickets, where in exchange they have agreed to play the games at Key Arena just for me. The lawsuit filed by the other season ticket holders is baseless. It ties up our court system, when there are other things more important to litigate on a daily basis.

The commissioner is not just going to step in and take control - because he serves at the pleasure of the ownership. It would not be in his best interest to do something counter productive to what one of his owners is trying to accomplish. When it comes down to it, he will get involved when he needs to - but he is not going to come in and save this without other owners going to him and giving him that instruction.

Clearly Brian Robinson is hurting more people than Clay Bennett is.

Eyeroll.

mloefler527, give it up man. I know there's not very many things to do in OKC, but your retarded diatribes are in vain. You're not a Seattle Sonics fan. Get a life and another hobby please.
Opal @ 16:04 - Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007
Yeah - please take this discussion elsewhere, if you guys want to discuss this further, exchange emails, so the rest of us can enjoy Erics coverage and the excitement of this season.
mloefler527 @ 17:26 - Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 Email
My investment in the team would tell you that I am a Seattle Sonics fan. However, I just don't think it's a good idea to sue the team when the suit has no merit. That's all.

Brian Robinson is just adding fuel to Clays fire. He is a horrible owner, and is clearly not committed. My point is that suing him as fans is retarded.

Don't say I am not a fan - because you clearly have no clue. Fact based arguments seem to go nowhere on this board, which is the reason we are in this position to begin with. Nobody listens to facts or reasoning, thus the team will be moving.
