Post-Sonics Watch
Feeling lost without your Seattle SuperSonics? Seattle-area NBA fans face their first season without an NBA team in 41 years. Primarily, our coverage here will focus on the City of Seattle’s attempt to bring the NBA back to Seattle. But we also will provide updates on the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and area players plying their trade for other teams in the NBA.

Eric Williams covered the Sonics' last season in Seattle. A Tacoma native, Eric graduated from Mount Tahoma High and the University of Puget Sound.

Keeping an eye on the NBA and Seattle's efforts to get back into the game
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007
Posted by Eric Williams @ 07:20:52 pm

Just a couple minutes before tip-off and Seattle's ready to take the floor. It's pretty much a circus here with ESPN cameras all over the place, including inside the Sonics locker room getting shots of Kevin Durant, Chris Wilcox, Wally Szczerbiak and others.

I talked to Durant for a few minutes. He says he's a little nervous, but that he's like that before every game, and that he expects the butterflies to dissipate once the game starts.

Durant could be matched up against Carmelo Anthony at times. He knows it's a challenging matchup, but he has seen him before during the Team USA trials this summer in Las Vegas.

"It’s going to be tough," he said. "He’s a quick defender. Very long, and very athletic. It’s going to be tough. But that’s how every game in this league is going to be."

Listen to the Kevin Durant conversation here.

As far as injuries, Kurt Thomas (right hamstring) and Robert Swift (right knee) will not play tonight. Thomas is questionable for Thursday's home opener against Phoenix, and Swift is doubtful.

With the two centers out Seattle might have to play small, with Jeff Green or perhaps Wally Szczerbiak seeing some time at power forward. Also expect Johan Petro to get a look at power forward tonight.

Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo talked about the tough stretch of games to begin the season with two teams that could go deep in the Western Conference playoffs in Denver and Phoenix.

“It’s not the worst," Carlesimo said. "I haven’t looked at other people’s (schedule) but it’s about as bad of an opening as you could have. I mean they are two playoff teams, two running teams, and two veteran teams for the most part. Teams that have been in tact and their coaching staff’s are in tact, so no, it’s not real good.
“But, you know, you’ve got to play them anyhow. And sometimes playing people early is better than getting them later on when they settle in.”

Listen to the full Carlesimo conversation here.

That's it for now. I'll have more stuff during the game.

Durant is 3 of 13 in the first half and he is the savior?
But the team looks OK so far.
Can some one tell me what a micro fracture is and why it requires surgery?

Here's a few thoughts on tonight's game, unfortunately mostly negative:

1. Another 4th Quarter meltdown. Hope this doesn't become a pattern. If it does I blame it more on PJ then on the players.

2. Earl Watson was awful at both ends of the floor. I'm not as concerned about his (lack of) offense as about his defensive liability. I've never noticed this with him before. Don't know if it's PJ's system, having to guard Iverson or just that I never paid attention to Watson's (lack of) d before, but he was awful.

3. Durant missed way too many shots. I suspect that he's going to end up as a great player, but we're probably not going to get to see it here in Seattle. (whether it's from moving to OKC or changing teams in the prime of his career like Rashard Lewis). At 19 years old, he should be coming off the bench & learning, not starting & being asked to be the team's main scorer.

4. We currently have 4 first round picks on the roster at center & all we really have to show for it is 1 strong journeyman quality out of position power forward in Collison (though Petro played better then I expected tonight). This really shows us how bad Walker (& to a lesser degree Sund) were at judging young talent.

5. Very hard to judge on just 1 game, but tonight PJ seemed to have problems with making mid game adjustments I really wish they would have hired Dwayne Casey, but I suspect that between DC possibly having some loyalty to Seattle & Pressi & PJ already being friends, DC didn't have a chance.

On the plus side, West, Wilcox & Wilkins all looked good in the first half, & "Snapper" Jones was acceptable alongside KC. Speaking of which, I listened to part of a couple preseason games on the radio in the car last week. I hope Matt Pinto gets better quickly.

So who was running the point during the 4th quarter meltdown? I only caught the 1st quarter (East coast resident) and Watson looked terrible running the team. Out of control drives followed by bad passes and no offense to threaten with. West may have had more turnovers, but you have to account for him when he is on the floor.

besides getting handled in the 4th qtr, i was happy with the team in general. was a lot of travel calls, Def 3 sec violations, and missed free throws that could have swayed the game the sonics way, or at least kept the game closer in the 4th.....after watching the game...D. West should start!

With this team it doesn't matter who they start the year against, heck they could start against the Auburn trojans and still probably lose. This team is just like the ownership a joke.

in the fourth, the soops set up in a zone defense to counter Iverson penetration. Karl countered by inserting Kleiza who was lights out on open threes. The Denver offense looked organized.

Iverson balanced his seven steals with seven turnovers.

Green's defense looked good. Petro got some boards.
