Post-Sonics Watch
Feeling lost without your Seattle SuperSonics? Seattle-area NBA fans face their first season without an NBA team in 41 years. Primarily, our coverage here will focus on the City of Seattle’s attempt to bring the NBA back to Seattle. But we also will provide updates on the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and area players plying their trade for other teams in the NBA.

Eric Williams covered the Sonics' last season in Seattle. A Tacoma native, Eric graduated from Mount Tahoma High and the University of Puget Sound.

Keeping an eye on the NBA and Seattle's efforts to get back into the game
Friday, November 2nd, 2007
Posted by Eric Williams @ 09:49:44 am

In case you missed it this morning, a local ownership group headed by Dennis H. Daugs, a private wealth manager and managing director of Lakeside Capital Management LLC.

The group issued a news release today saying the group had written a formal letter of interest to Sonics owner Clay Bennett of Oklahoma City, who also owns the Seattle Storm of the WNBA.

“We want to recapture the spirit and love of basketball in Seattle by bringing the Sonics and Storm back to local ownership,” said Daugs, a former minority owner of the NBA franchise. Read more about the story here.

This is one of a couple groups that's been rumored to be interested in buying the Sonics.

Problem is, Clay Bennett's group is not interested in selling the Sonics. The Sonics ownership group is expected to make an announcement today regarding the future of the team.

I'll keep you posted throughout the day on what is happening in what figures to be a busy news day regarding the Sonics. For those who wish to discuss last night's game, pop in and comment here, or continue on last night's post and I'll pop in to comment further on team stuff.

Around what time are they supposed to give this announcement from Clay?
Last night was another great game to watch, they played great. Why did P.J. stick with Watson to finish the game? I would have liked to see Delonte in their at the end.. Watson looked better then Wednesday but still makes some very poor decisions at point. Not being to critical of them as they are still finding themselves but overall pleased with their performance. TRADE BENNETT! I called David Sterns office today and told him Clay wants to stay now. lol.

Goms: I was told yesterday the ownership group would make an announcement mid-morning. But they could wait until mid-afternoon.

Watson played better last night, but overall the Sonics are still struggling to find consistency at that position. I think we also need to consider that Seattle played against two of the best point guards in the game in Allen Iverson and Steve Nash. But you're right, the team needs better play from the point guards, Watson in particular, if they are going to win games late.

Was at the game last night and the fans were great. We were all shouting save our sonics and it was nice to see the TNT announcers talk about the team. Kid Rock of all people was courtside and got a personalized Supes jersey. Seattle did a lot of good things on the court but couldn't pull it together at the end. People are giving Earl a lot of grief but I think that he is trying to get used to his role just like the others. Being the starting PG it is showing the most with him since he has the ball in his hands a lot. He did make some poor decisions but I think that it will get better the more they play. I think he plays better coming off the bench then starting... at least thats the way it was last year.

Thanks for the response Eric. Even with the two loses i still feel great about the team, they make it exciting to watch and its nice to know that their is a future with these players. Watson did look good at times and Delonte looks good but not perfect as he turned the ball over quite a bit on Wednesday. Great to see some Sonic basketball!

There has got to be a way to force Bennett to sell, or to trade the sups for another team.

Eric,

When Ken Behring wanted to move the Seahawks someone, the NFL or the courts required that he offer the team to local ownership first. If no local ownership came forward to purchase the Seahawks then it was another story.

Does the NBA have a precedent requiring the same?
Can anyone see the NBA letting the team leave if their is serious local ownership?
