Keeping an eye on the NBA and Seattle's efforts to get back into the game

24 -- Number of turnovers in a game for Seattle

34 -- Sacramento points off Seattle turnovers

32 -- Points scored by Wally Szczerbiak

6 -- Points scored by Szczerbiak in the fourth quarter

27 -- fastbreak points by Seattle

20 -- Points Seattle led by in the first half.

This was pretty much a game Seattle had in the bag, but couldn't hang onto. Again, Seattle struggled to close it out. With Kevin Durant, Damien Wilkins and Chris Wilcox all missing shot late that would have kept Seattle in it.

There were good things that happened. Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo liked his team's execution late in the game in the half-court set.

And Seattle was more aggressive on both the offensive and defensive ends.

But it's all about getting W's, and Seattle did not do that tonight.

I thought it was curious that Wally Szczerbiak didn't get more opportunities to shoot late in the game, particularly with the way he was shooting it.

Szczerbiak only had four shots in the fourth quarter.

Here's what he had to say.

“I’m not a bashful guy,” Szczerbiak said about getting only four shots in the fourth quarter. “I’ll start running toward the ball if I feel like I want it. But I got looked off a couple times. We got good shots down the stretch. It’s just one of those things. Shots didn’t fall.
“I think we executed our offense well, which is a start. We had a few too many turnovers down the stretch, which gave them easy buckets. And they made some plays. So we just have to back to the drawing board.
“But I did have a hot hand going, so it would have been nice (to get some touches).”

Listen to more Szczerbiak here.

Carlesimo said they tried to get it to Szczerbiak, but had trouble setting up plays for him because Szczerbiak was playing power forward, which he doesn't do that much.

Listen to the Conversation with Carlesimo here.

Seattle also not getting to the foul line. Seattle's opponents are taking a little over 10 more free throws a game than the Sonics.

Bottom line, until Seattle's stops turning the ball over 20 times a game and figures out a way to execute and get to the line down the stretch, it's going to be a long season.

It's already a long season. This was a frustrating loss, tired of the stupid turnovers and lackadasical play. PJ needs to find a point guard leader for this team. They needed to get the ball to a hot Wally down the stretch, they looked selfish instead.
I see egos coming out due to lack of playing time. I also really want the Sonics here, but this team sucks and has no chemistry. I don't think the players are buying into the PJ style of play?
The GM needs to make a trade soon to salvage this season or we maybe looking at the first 0-82 season ever!

It's past time for Watson to become the 3rd option at PG, behind Luke & West. Swift is worthless.

Why so many turnovers by the big guys? You expect it out of the PG because they handle the ball so much, but how can forwards and centers be giving it away so much?

With the refs emphasizing traveling calls this season it is interesting that they let Brad Miller switch his pivot foot on the last shot that Sac made. He grabbed the board and couldn't get the ball to the man in the corner so he switched pivots and was able to get rid of the ball...where is the love?

iqbal70 - Because our inside guys are weak and need to hit the weight room. It is about strength inside. Did you hear Barkley the other night? He gave Durant plenty of props, but then said the obvious about getting some beef on his frame. Durant needs to hold the ball higher when he goes inside as I lost count of how many times he was stripped.

This team is good, but they need to learn more about team defense. They move the ball alot better than last year, their assists should dwarf numbers from previous years when Ray and Rashard would ISO and not pass. I'll take 5-15 after 20 games, but then there should be no excuses for not going on a little run. They have the tools in the toolbox, they just need to know when and how to use them.

CALLING THE HYPERBOLE POLICE!

Also what this isn't exactly a playoff team underachieving, like the 0-4 Bulls, so I'm not sure this season was every something that was going to BE salvaged.

Any game the Sonics game tie on their last possession and only get the ball into Damien Wilkins' hands instead of Durant or a hot Wally Z is one they deserve to lose.

Some guys are just knuckle heads and probably always will be. PJ 's got to figure out who they are and limit their play. Some may think we look brilliant at times. I disagree, we get players with hot hands and rebound pretty well. After that it's more a matter of the chemist that is in charge of this chemistry experiment!

LUKE NEEDS TO START. He may not play D like Earl but whats defense if you can't hit an open jumper? Not to mention the fact that teams know this and don't really consider Earl much of an offensive threat, except when he drives the lane. Even then he has a hard time finishing. If you look at assist totals from previous years, Luke can be a great passer. They didn't invite him to the skills challenge and a spot on the Olympic team awhile ago for nothing. At the beginning of last season, Luke was putting up great numbers. He is much more of an offensive threat and can spread the D a little bit. Play Watson as a fastbreak kinda spark when needed or to open up the forth quarter and wear down the opposing team a little. Use D West as a premier 6th man at the 2 spot. I was a big fan of Watson last year but the guy puts up way better numbers off the bench.

Hey Eric, i was wondering if you could tell us on your game previews, if/where the game is televised. That would be awesome!
eddiew @ 17:44 - Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 Email
the turnovers are a team wide problem and not just the point guards. a significant share are Durant not being strong enough protecting the ball while making fakes and the bigs making sloppy passes. PJ should be able to correct this.

The Soops were last a low turnover team when McMillan was coach and Antonio Daniels logged significant minutes.

Note that Bevin Knight, a low turnover guy, was free this summer, and signed with the Clips, one of the teams to beat the Soops.

Damien Wilkens is my favorite brick launcher. He launches roughly 10 bricks a night. I may be used to Ray Allen having soft touch, but holy molely, how are you a pro with that shot?
